Toprol Xl Side Effect in Answers
Toprol XL Side Effects? My mom has been ill for about a year with nausea and stabbing pain in legs/feet. She was fine last summer and then she was put on a new drug right after her father died. I think this drug is the culprit. It is called Toprol XL. Has anyone been on this drug and had bad side effects from it?

P J replied: "Has she addressed her concerns with her Physician? Have you looked th drug up on line and looked for possible side effects? I could, I don't even know what the drug is so this is to make a point, tell you that it made my ears ring day and night and that would have nothing to do with your mom or even the drug itself. She needs to see her Doc."

Do you take Toprol XL and have unwanted side effects? I am having undesirable side effects witg Toprol. I am anxious, depressed, lightheaded, and fatigued. Did anyone switch to an alternative medicine? What other beta blocker would YOU recommend?

Austin replied: "I switched from toprol xl to atenolol and don't really get the side effects with it."

SKITTLES replied: "I took toprol XL and also had the side effects you listed. I stopped taking the beta blockers altogether. I felt better NOT taking meds than I did on medication. Talk to the dr about your options."

poet_by_nature replied: "I take Toprol XL and feel no side effects. Maybe your body is having a reaction to this type of medicine. Not every body has the same reaction. Check with your doctor."

aroseisarose replied: "How long have you been on this? Minor side effects -and results- with medication can take up to two weeks in most cases. If you symptoms are major....call the Dr. and/or Pharmacist for the best advice! (yes, your Pharmacist!- that is what his/her job is..it does not end with the medication fill!)"

greatblue7 replied: "I have taken Toprol XL for over 8 years and have had no side effects. Check with your pharmacist and online and compare your symptoms with the symptoms for side effects on this drug. In most cases, common side effects, such as lightheadedness go away in just a few days."

Harmony replied: "This is a question that should be discussed with your doctor. Adverse Reactions with Toprol include: Cardiovascular: Bradycardia (2% to 16%), hypotension (1% to 2%), arterial insufficiency (usually Raynaud type; 1%), chest pain (1%), CHF (1%), edema (peripheral; 1%), palpitation (1%), syncope (1%), gangrene (rare) Central nervous system: Dizziness (2% to 10%), fatigue (10%), depression (5%), confusion, headache, insomnia, memory loss (short-term), nightmares, somnolence Dermatology: Pruritus (5%), rash (5%), psoriasis increased, alopecia (reversible; rare) Endocrine & metabolic: Libido decreased, Peyronie’s disease (<1%) Gastrointestinal: Diarrhea (5%), constipation (1%), flatulence (1%), gastrointestinal pain (1%), heartburn (1%), nausea (1%), xerostomia (1%) Hematologic: Agranulocytosis (rare) Neuromuscular & skeletal: Musculoskeletal pain Ocular: Blurred vision, dry eyes (rare), oculomucocutaneous syndrome Otic: Tinnitus Respiratory: Dyspnea (1% to 3%), bronchospasm (1%), wheezing (1%), rhinitis"

Side Effects of Toprol XL? I take 25mg of Toprol once a day in the morning. I feel tired unti the evening everyday for some reason. Does anyone have this side effect while taking this medicine? Is this a small dose and not the cause? Would appreciate hearing from others who take this medicine.

AbeLincolnParty replied: "http://www.accessdata.fda.gov/drugsatfda_docs/label/2009/019962s038lbl.pdf The above link is the FDA label information on the drug. Two points to consider. Toprol gets into the brain, and about 10% of patients get feelings of being tired. Sometimes this is labled depression, but I would not take medication for it, but switch to a selective Beta blocker that does not get into the brain (Sectral is available as a generic and might be a good substitute, if a low enough dose was available to treat your condition and if your doctor thought sectral's intrinsic sympathomimetic activity (which Toprol does not have) would not be a problem. Toprol, being a beta blocker can make the heart beat slower and with less force and this might be another cause of feeling tired, you need your doctor to evaluate this physical effect."

I am changing from toprol xl to atenolol because of side effects. How will the transition be.? I take toprol xl for Supraventricular Tachycardia thnks for the input cost is one issue they are the same except atenolol does not cross the blood brain barrier like toprol. toprol disturbs sleep and causes bizarre dreams

jack replied: "Both are of same group called Beta blockers. So both of them have almost same side effects. I don't know why your doctor is changing from one to other if there is a side effect for one. Anyway if your doctor said so, then you can just stop the toprol and continue on atenolol at the dose your doctor adviced. As both are from same group it won't make any problem if you abruptly stop one and start on the other."

Kim k replied: "Jack answered so well there's only one thing I can add. My mother took atenolol for a few years and was not bothered by any side effects. this is a woman who is every sensitive to medication, it's unusual for her to not have a problem with a med. If she felt no ill effects from atenolol I doubt you will as the two meds are so similar. I'm guessing the switch is a cost consideration, atenolol is the cheapest, the one all the insurance companies want to pay for and I believe is on the list of $4 prescriptions at Walmart, Target and any other pharmacy who has that $4 list of meds.."

Does anyone use Toprol XL for blood pressure to find the side effects are too much? I had used it for a period of time and then realized the side effects are hindering me...stopped it and felt better...anyone else experience things like this with this medication? Very informative and great explanation and explained A LOT to me, I am gonna look up and research Diltiazem and talk to my doctor on my next appointment about it. I took Toprol XL for quite some time before stopped taking it, I slowly decreased it then stopped, so I am okay, but I do need something else like it to combat my condition. Thank you very much Darwinall for your great answer.

Darwinall replied: "Don't use it myself, but as a medic had noticed I treated quite a few patients who had syncope, and complained of being tired all the time, no energy. (who were on it) My Mom's doc put her on it, and she complained of couldn't keep up normal activities, finish out her day. So we went to the doc together. After a long discussion (it wasn't easy) the doc put her on diltiazem instead. She's felt fine since then, went back to the doc (cardiologist) after a year - the doc complimented her on having an impressively healthy heart (thru the stethoscope, and on EKG). But, it depends on what you're on it for. It's used for hypertension, and for irregular heartbeats. My mom's BP is fine, but she had developed occasional atrial fibrillation. Docs love prescribing Toprol first, because it's a no-brainer for them. There are few, rare side effects, and the drug is easy to monitor - little follow up. You being hindered by side effects isn't a priority for them, and they tend to over-ride the first couple of objections. You have to really make them pay attention to get them to put you on something like diltiazem. It is a trickier drug to prescribe, they have to watch you more closely - and side effects can be trickier. But if it or another drug work out for you, great. Big finish: Don't just stop taking a medication! That's worse than the side effects. Get your thoughts together and go back to the doc. Good luck."

NRAlifemember replied: "First, let me respond to Darwinall's answer. I am a physician, and there is no such thing as a "no brainer". I am well aware of the potential consequences for my patients and take great care to choose the best option for them. While there are lazy, even dangerous doctors out there, I would appreciate not having all of us denigrated by someone who does not and cannot understand what it is like to be a physician. That said, all beta blockers (of which Toprol is one of the most commonly used) can cause significant side effects including tiredness, dizziness, overly slow heartbeat, overly low blood pressure, asthma like symptoms and erectile dysfunction. These side effects are, regrettably, fairly common and range from merely annoying to life threatening. For that reason, doctors should (and most do) monitor their beta blocker patients carefully. Diltiazem (aka Cardizem) is a calcium channel blocker and while a different class of drug than Toprol, it can have almost all of the same side effects and also requires close follwup from the prescriber. You should always inform your doctor of any side effects right away, and your doctor should always be concerned that you have them. There are several other classes of blood pressure medication that don't have quite as many side effects such as ACE inhibitors, diurectics, angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs), etc. However, each of those has its own special set of risks and concerns. As with anything, ask your doctor why they're choosing a given medicine for you and if they brush you off, find another doctor. Good luck."

how long does it take toprol xl to get out of your system? My mom is currently on toprol xl 50. The doctor increased her by 25- She seems to be having anxiety and heart racing alot and stomach problem. She is also very nervous-- The doctor told her there are not side effects- I was wondering if the increase could do this? also the doctor now decreased back to her normal level 50 and she is still having problems- how long does it take toprol xl to get out of your system?

JD M replied: "I had the same question pertaining to another drug (even though I am taking Toprol XL). I just asked my local Walmart pharmacist what is the half life of the drug and he gave me an 8 page printout with all the information. Hope this helps."

rocky replied: "My pill book says: onset 15 min., Peak 6 hrs., duration 24 hrs. for the Toprol XL."

savoirfairemn replied: "Once the dose of a drug is changed, it usually takes about 5-6 doses before it to reaches a steady level in the bloodstream. However, the biggest drop in the drug levels comes with the first couple of doses. If it has been over a week since she changed the dose, then the amount of Toprol in her system is already back to where it was before the doctor increased it to 75mg. But even after 2 days, her symptoms should improved if the Toprol XL was the problem. Hope that's helpful!"

penn 1600 replied: "Doubt toprol xl is the cause--actually should slow heart and block some anxiety symptoms--You need Doctors advice before you stop the toprol--50 is not a lot."

I am 18 and female, Taking toprol XL for palpitations, are intense mood swings and vivd dreams side effects? ? Help, should I tell my doctor?

TONY C replied: "Not at all uncommon side effects of Beta Blockers. You could let him know."

purplegirl replied: "Yes they are...I dont get the mood swings but I do get wild vivid dreams which I look forward to ...lol...Let your doctor know next time you see them...its not an urgent problem."

Has anybody switched from Toprol xl to Lopressor? I was on 25 mg of toprol xl once a day, but my Blood pressure was still high, so my doc put me on Lopressor 25 mg twice aday.. I really dont know the diffrence in them,, but I was wondering if anybody has had side effects from switching...

Nurse Lisa replied: "they're the same drug -- essentially -- different names, porb different manufacturers... ask the pharmacist for specifics"

ckm1956 replied: "Toprol is an extended release form of lopressor. Toprol 25mg daily is equivalent to 12.5mg lopressor twice daily. Your doc likely wanted to control your pressure, but if the dose turned out to be too much, then you could cut the dose. Once your pressure is controlled, then he/she may take you back to Toprol, but on a higher dose."

Laurence W replied: "25 Mg Toprol was ineffective twice a day. So I switched back to 50 mg Lopressor, but reduce the dose wth my doctor's approval. I have also taken it at 50mg , and 37 mg. But its strange. The 50 mg tablets work for me, but the 25 mg tablets have no effect. To take a smaller dose, I cut the 50 mg pill in half for 25 mg, and for 37 mg, I take another 1/4 of a 50 mg. If too high, ask your doctor about increasing the dose. I take my BP once or more daily, and regulate the dose myself to keep my BP at about 108/68. If high, I increase 12 mg, if low, I cut 12 mg. Being thirsty will also affect blood pressure, so when it is high, I have a glass of water first. If the water brings it down some, I keep my usual dosage."

any idea what could be wrong? i have been on toprol xl for the past month and a half...? i'm 27/female. I went to the ER 3/15 with rapid heart beat(130),chest pain, & just an overall 'strange' feeling. all tests came back negative. they thought it was either a panic attack or dehydration. I began taking 25mg of metroprolol that day b/c my blood pressure was high. After seeing my dr. for a follow up, i began taking 50mg of toprol xl everyday. since the day i started taking the toprol i've been feeling tingling all over, chest pain occasionally, nausea, fatigue, constipation, and heavy/difficulty breathing(not often). each day is different, but i get at least 1 symptom a day. i've been back to the dr. twice, he gave me xanax(alprazolam) to help b/c he felt it was anxiety. they didn't work. i've had blood tests & an echo cardiogram, all came back normal. He said what im feeling is not side effects from toprol, any ideas what it could be? at his suggestion im gonna see a neurologist. but before that im looking for any suggestions...thanks!

crazynanner replied: "i had a friend who had some similar symptoms... she actually had blood clots filling her lungs... it was caused by the combo of her birth control and her smoking... scary.. hope you are able to get a for sure diagnosis.. it's scary to not know whats going on.. happened to me just a couple months ago, but thank goodness my drs were persistant.. sounds like you are on the right track by going to a specialist.."

Heather K replied: "I've been on Toprol XL (25 mg) for almost a year now. When I first started it I had some side effects too, but nothing like you. My doctor told me not to even LOOK at the list of side effects that it has, because there's so many. Perhaps there's a different type of beta blocker they can put you on to see if it helps relieve the problem. As far as your symptoms though, they sound kinda similar to what I have. Chest pains are what brought me to the ER. I had a heart rate of 160 bpm and they couldn't figure out why it was so high. I've also had problems with breathing, but it went away after about a week. I wonder what it could be! I hope that you're able to figure it out. Good luck!"

mark f replied: "Here is a list of side effects of tropol If I were you I would contact a few pharmacists and just make sure it isn't a drug reaction. I would also if I were you trace your mind back and see if there was anything that could have caused these symptoms like did you stop a drug abruptly that you had been taking for a while? Many drugs can have withdrawal side effects. Was there any drug that you took around the time of onset of these symptoms which could explain these symptoms, perhaps a toxic reaction. I would definately seek further medical advice just to make sure there is no medical cause. Your doctor may want to do some simple blood tests like hormones, thyroid function, celiac disease (I am not a doctor so I am just firing out random tests which may not bve relevant to your symptoms). Cut out alcohol completely and caffeine and aspartame containing foods/drinks as well. Try to avoid stress. Good luck and hope you find out the cause of your problems soon."

my husband has just started toprol xl 100 mg today. his b/p was 200/99. what are the side effects of thsi med. is this a strong dose? he has had high b/p for a while but has finaly gone to our doctor. it runs in his family. he also has high colestorl. what are the side effects of this med.? he also has some pys. problems, he doesn"t take meds for them. could this med. make them worse. thanks

rocketscientist replied: "I think mine was 50 mg It will make him drowse may effect love life too"

lucee replied: "Look at the answers on this link for more information on Toprol XL. I've been on Toprol XL 50 Mg for a number of years, and haven't really had any side effects. 100 Mg is a pretty high dose, but apparently the doctor wants to get his blood pressure down in a hurry, and I would too, if it's 200/99. That's scary! That's stroke area, especially if it runs in his family. He should drink plenty of water, stay away from alcohol, don't smoke, easy on the coffee, maybe mix half regular-half decaf, at least for a while. After the blood pressure gets to an acceptable level based on his age and other factors, the dose may get lowered. Use low salt, NOT no-salt, just a lower salt, like Morton Lite salt with lower sodium. Light exercise, maybe walking a couple of times a week, no jogging or strenuous activity until the pressure comes down. I'm sure the doctor will tell him all this. A lot of it is common sense, but not for a man. They don't want to use common sense about their health! Good luck!"

Linda G replied: "I have taken Toprol XL for years. I had very few side effects. It can make you tired. It may also not be as sensitive to him while having sex. I had a hard time with organsisms as a women. I have a mitral valve prolapse that is why I took it and I was on 150 mg. I think the dose is corrrect. I also beleive that his BP may come down if his psy. problems are taken care of. Diet dose play a big part in his physical well being. Low fat, low salt, low caffine. Here is some information from Drug digest that might answer some questions for you. Remember, he may not have any side effects at all. His body will beomed used to it after a while. He may feel terrible for a couple of weeks becasue his BP is coming down and his body had to get used to being normal again.
