Take on full or empty stomach? I got a prescription for Penicillin but it doesn't say if I should take it on a full or empty stomach. Which is best?

SAM1981 replied: "Take it with something, like some crackers and a full glass of water."

misbehavin' replied: "have something in your stomach"

Danielle F replied: "TAKE IT WITH A BEER! lol, kidding"

ash replied: "full... specially if you are the queezy type. milk is good for that too."

BIG replied: "WIth Crackers??? I haven't seen a cracker on the market that doesn't have trans fat in it ----- trans fat is very dengerous ----- anyways -- you can take it any way you choose ----- don't take it with any fiber ---- it will be partially absorbed by it ---------"

Connie J replied: "Ask your pharmacist~"

STREP THROAT. i heard you shouldnt eat when taking penicillin... ? one of the questions here asked how long before you can eat non astronaut food basically. now either they meant because of the strep throat discomfort or because penicillin can only work on an empty stomach? sorry for sounding stupid but this is my first time having strep throat. i think its gotten a little better. this is day 3 of taking penicillin (2 pills, 3 times a day, 3 days, then 2 pills a day, twice for 7 days) it still hurts alot to swallow when am i gonna see results? (ibuprofen not helping much)

Southerngirl29 replied: "You need to eat or you will not regain your strength. Try foods like chicken noodle soup and make sure you drink lots of fluid. Your sore throat should be getting better in a day or two especially since you are taking penicillin. Last time I had strep throat by the fourth day my sore throat was better. I know it hurts to swallow. I absolutely hate strep throat so I hope you get better soon."

hyabusawife replied: "It's because of the sore throat. You will feel much better in about 2 days. Continue to take your medication as perscribed, and continue to take tylenol or ibuprofen for the discomfort. You may also want to try cepocal throat spray or gargle with warm salt water to relieve the discomfort. In the meantime, eat small frequent soft meals. You should be feeling better soon."

Choqs replied: "You need to eat. Plenty of water and clear liquids - soup, juice etc. You are not supposed to drink alcohol when taking penicillin as it counteracts the drug. You should be feeling much better in another day or 2."

cheruvima replied: "When you are sick is when you need the most nutritious food, so you definitely eat when taking penicillin. I know you probably don't have much appetite, and it probably still hurts to swallow, but you need to try all you can to eat real, nutritious food. Warm soup is good and so it hot tea; both are soothing. But you need real, solid food as well. The penicillin treats the infection, so by eliminating the infection, you will eventually begin to feel better, but in the meantime, you also need symptom relief in order to feel better now. Someone mentioned Tylenol or ibuprofen. Use either/or, but not both. Warm fluids are soothing, as we said, rest if helpful and drink a lot of water. OJ is good too. I've known people who put a sprinkle of cinnamon on top of OJ and warm it up in the microwave, just because warm fluids are soothing....I don't know if it's good, but you might want to try it--you might like it..Hope you feel better soon."

Antibiotics only on empty stomach? My GP prescribed me penicillin this morning - I have to take it 4 times a day. I have taken the first one on an empty stomach as directed, about 1 hour before I had my breakfast (which was late this morning - 11 AM). On the leaflet it says I should have them on an empty stomach (1 hour before) or at least threee hours after my last meal. However, I get the feeling that I'm not able to eat anything. Find it hard to regulate this? And what happens if I don't take them on an empty stomach anyway?

Semi-Constant Gardener replied: "Food interferes with the absorption of some medications, so there is a chance that you will not get the full dose intended and that your infection will not go away. I am not sure why you do not think you cannot eat anything. In my experience the easiest way is to take them one hour before meals, and then you don't run into any time issues if you take it 3 hours after a meal, but need to make sure that time is one hour before your next meal. EDIT: I received your email but my reply bounced back for some reason. But at any rate, your proposed schedule in the email will work fine. EDIT: Lily, I am a guy and not really beautiful, haha. Strikingly handsome perhaps."

MariaBilau replied: "sorry i cant, u better ask ur doc."

Los Ojos replied: "1/2 hour before a meal or 2 hours after is acceptable. If you take it with food the absorption and there for the benefit will not be as good."

Lily replied: "You got two beautiful nurses watching over you. Lucky you. Listen to them."

Bad sign if Tablets hurt my stomach? I just got out of hospital a few days ago because i had a virus and it made me have a high temperature and made my heart rate very fast.. they gave me a prescription of Penicillin to take for 10 days.. and to be taken on an empty stomach.. since I've been taking them, my stomach hurts so much!! just after I take them :( what do I do???

mmms20 replied: "drink plenty of water"

Penicillin and food . . . ? I've just been prescribed Penicillin - I know you need to take on empty stomach or 1hr before eating, but how long do I have to wait after eating before take Pencillin again? Hi Alex, thanks for that! x

alex replied: "I currently work in a Pharmacy and normally Penicillin is fine with or without food, and has not time limit, but if the doctor has recommended you take the penicillin on an empty stomach its generally 1hour before eating or depending on the person 45mins after eating. However penicillin should not be taken before and after eating."

Side effects of penicillin? I have been prescribed a course of penicillin for bacterial Laryngitis. I have to take 4 tablets a day for 7 days. This is my second day on them and I have recently taken my 6th tablet. However, yesterday I noticed alot of vaginal discharge and about half an hour ago, I just had diarrhoea. I have also been feeling only the slightest bit nauseous (only enough to effect my appetite slightly) I'm gathering these are from the tablets because I read through the leaflet that came with the tablets and those side effects were listed but it says they do not occur in most cases. Plus, I have to take the tablets an hour before food or on an empty stomach which has meant that I haven't really eated much at all, so I don't think there is a huge chance of the diarrhoea being caused by anything else. Shall I just continue taking the tablets? Or shall I tell my doctor? Or maybe should I carry on and go see my doctor later if the side effects persist...what do you think? *which has meant that I haven't really eaten much at all (sorry, I don't want people to think I'm stupid XD)

AndrewL replied: "im allergic so i get purple dots all around me"

Kathleen replied: "Take the pills until they are finished. You should only stop taking them if you have an allergy to them (usually hives, itching, difficulty breathing, etc.). Eat bananas and/or cheese to counter-effect the diarrhea. It's not uncommon to have a yeast infection since the penicillin will unbalance your natural bacteria as well. So pick up something from the drugstore for it."

D S replied: "You should talk to your doctor as this could be a pre-cursor to an allergic reaction You should also take pro-biotics yougurt drinks and you can also get high dose tablets the penicillin kills both the good and bad bacteria you need to replace the good"

Cody replied: "You may want to ask your doctor, however, you must know that everyone reacts to drugs differently...especially penicillin. Penicillin is derived from another type of bacteria, which is why in many cases of people being allergic to it, there are many alternatives. Medical technology has come a long way. Also, through infections alone can cause very adverse affects on your body. Even a small ulser can cause swelling of the glands, headaches, nausea, etc. Check with your Dr., but remember...he went to med school for at least 6-8 years...he should know a little about something."

Bren replied: "different people experience different side effects unfortunately diarrhoea is one for some people. if they say u have to take on an empty stomach then u have to do that . that is because some medication works better when not mixed with food, if the side effects are unbearable then tell yr doctor, u may find they settle down after 2 - 3 days but if not then tell yr doctor and maybe they can prescribe u a different antibiotic"

I've got tablets I have to take 4 times a day. when should i take them? They're penicillin and i have to take them on an empty stomach....

Lava replied: "Every six hours is best. This keeps the concentration of the drug steady and makes the therapy more effective. So a time schedule could be 6 am, 12 noon, 6 pm then midnight. Or something like that."

Xirse replied: "Try to take them with at least 4 hours in between. Take one before you go to bed and one when you wake up. Then take the other two during the day when you haven't eaten for at least an hour. P.S: Make sure you finish your prescribed course of antibiotics, even if you feel better =]"

ms innocent replied: "You didn't get this from a doctor did you? Because with antibiotic they give you instructions with it .if you take four that is every six hours okay and the empty stomach thing don't sound right because those pills will upset your stomach have you throwing up if you don't eat first believe me honey I just had a kidney transplant three Weeks ago and every time I take my antibiotics without food I throw up so now I know to eat a breakfast bar or some crackers or something before taking them"

princesscutey@y7mail.com replied: "i atm have to take penicillin cause i have tonsillities and the doctor i went to told me to take them at breakfast, lunch, tea and before you go to bed. Dont listen to mrs .... she doesnt have any idea wat she is talking about If she reads this, it says on the packet to take with a empty stomach"

iraq51 replied: "24 divided by 4 = 6 Every 6 hours...."

can i eat with a dental abscess? i've been prescribed penicillin that i should take evry six hours on an empty stomach, but i forgot to ask whether i could still eat or not.

linda p replied: "If you can eat I would try soup, or a milkshake, you probably can't chew without pain so eat accordingly."

nochocolate replied: "Yes, I would think you could eat, AFTER you take the penicillin. I don't know if your abscess hurts when you chew, sometimes an abscess doesn't hurt while chewing. So, if it doesn't hurt, eat what you like! Penicillin V is ideally given 30 to 60 minutes before meals, but can be given with meals to persons who develop nausea or stomach pain with it. "

Sunshine replied: "You can eat if it does not hurt to chew on it."

flowerpet56 replied: "the drug interacts with food.....empty means empty! eat several hours AFTER taking pencill............. that drug is fighting infection, don't dis it!"

vaitul replied: "no"

deepthroat replied: "Not until you absorb the penicillin, which will take an hour or so after swallowing. Some other tips: Swill your mouth with warm salt water, this will help clean the tooth with the abcess, relieve some of the pain."

Trouble's Mama replied: "Yes you can- about 1/2 - 1 hour after taking your medicine. I've had one tooth abscess 4 times and I really should've gotten it pulled faster but it didn't. If you're not in so much pain you can't eat, you SHOULD eat. It'll help your body heal. Good luck."

teri replied: "Of course you should eat...there is no reason not to...besides how do you expect to get well...before you found out about the absess weren't you eating? its okay go eat.."

Chele' replied: "Definitely eat!! I'm in dental profession. With abscess it hurts to eat hard foods like potatoe chips and popcorn, so eat soft things like mashed potatoes, jello's, ice cream ( if it's not cold sensitive). But take antibiotic like stated on empty stomach but 1/2 hour later or so eat something soft. :) Also finish medicine all the way, don't stop because if feels better, infection will come back!"

marija k replied: "As I knew,PENICILIN go after meal, but in your case, you can eat 30min after taking penicilin(like that is with every medicament).Future Doctor! Kiss"

Strangesuzy replied: "Yes. You should eat. But it would be best to eat soft foods, or soup. If you don't eat, your immune system might suffer, which would reduce your ability to fight the infection. Just make sure you wait an hour after eating before taking your penecillin."

Wisdom extraction question? Ok i got my wisdom teeth taken out(all 4) at 2pm this afternoon.Im in serious pain and i took a vicadin i was given and it helped for about an hour. Now i just ate some jell-o so i could stop feeling nautious. My question is the paper said i could take 2 vicadin but i have a sensitive stomach and i dont want to get sick.If i take ibuprofen or advil with it like it also said i could do,would that make me sick too? They never make me nautious even on a empty stomach..But..i have taken a vicadin, penicillin and had the anestesia through the operation so is that going to make me sick to take advil too?Im juse really trying to avoid throwing up here.

zDoTeXe replied: "smoke some weed and everything will be fine. seriously."

retox b replied: "advil, tylenol, and asprin are horrible on your stomach and you shouldnt mix it with opiates anyways. you should try sleeping ... until 420 and then u know what to do then, right? if ur in cali you should smoke some medicinal marijuana..."

Killumated1 replied: "just eat some food when you take it if you can..."

٠•Φ•٠ replied: "just take all the pills your suposed too. NO MIXING"

Ems replied: "EAT. i threw up non stop when i had mine taken out because i just kept taking more and more pain killers without eating. As long ass your stomach is full take lotsa pills :)"

XxDeviant =) replied: "I had my wisdom teeth out (it sucks) but what u can do is ice packs. Freeze the hell out of your cheeks and they will become numb and less pain."

Ozgood replied: "Call your dentist and tell em the Vicodin is making you sick and get something else."

friend. replied: "take one advil. drink lots of water. and just try going to sleep."

Kators replied: "How do you feel now? If you feel fine, go for it. If you feel sick now, I would not suggest taking anymore. I would wait it out and take a vicodin and get some rest."

!!!!U can call me shortstuff!! replied: "oh my god im very sorry about this my husband had this done and was in so much pain also taking other meds besides the ones you were given should be good enuff dont mess with nothing else my husband healed day by day and fought infections and what not with penicillin just stick to your meds and youll be thankful they gave you that they work really well hopr you feel better and just take it ez"

dippingsauce22 replied: "First of all DONT mix meds it's very bad for your stomach. The best thing to do is to call your doctor and let him know what you are taking then ask him for a nausea pill called Promethazine. It works really great for nausea but it will knock you out for about 10 hours. I also have to get my bottom two Wisdom teeth taken out July 6th!!!"

tarajf replied: "I had my teeth out two weeks ago and was prescribed amoxicillin, ibuprofen (advil) and a horrible pain killer called di-gesic. The di-gesic had a side effect which made me violently sick, so I switched to codeine after consulting the surgeon. I was prescribed a generic ibuprofen which acted as an anti-inflammatory to reduce swelling and bruising as well as alleviate pain. There shouldn't be any problems with taking opiates and ibuprofen together - they do not interact. However, do not take any aspirin-based medicine. If you are sick, rinse your mouth with warm, salty water immediately afterwards, then contact your surgeon and ask them to prescribe another pain killer. However, the fact that you're in such serious pain and the vicadin only helped for an hour is a concern. Contact your surgeon and let them know. The pain could be a signal that no blood clot has formed in the socket (called a 'dry socket'). Good luck!"

has this or does this happen to anyone else? i was prescribed penicillin for the first time last week because i had a tooth pulled. it says to take it 4 times a day but i've been taking 2 on work days and 3 on my days off. i don't want diarrhea the bottle says it might cause. i can handle the nasty taste i get from the pills because its only for a few seconds. i noticed if i take one on an empty stomach i feel nauseous. but the nauseousness goes away if i eat right after. so i've been taking them during meals. am i the only one who experiences this though? i believe they are 500 MG if that matters

red rose replied: "I had a pill (but not penicillin) that did that to me. My doctor told be to take it an hour before or after eating though, so it could be better digested. I always had to eat first or I'd feel sick."

Pam H replied: "Nausea is a common side effect. Totally normal."

bobe replied: "You need to follow the dosage and if it requires you to take 4 a day, then that's what you should be doing. Penicillin is not the type of drug where you can skip dosage or only take when convenient. Also, it's very important to take the full course until you finish the bottle. Never stop taking them before you run out of the bottle. The reason your Dentist has prescribed Penicillin is because you have an infection. Take them with food if they upset your stomach. This is very common and is no reason to be alarmed. They upset my stomach too."

Doug S replied: "Folow the directions on the medication exactly. If otherwise take as your doctor wants you to."

alphabanana replied: "your pharmacist should have counseled that you need to take most antibiotics on a full stomach! because the nausea is indeed a common side effect. also, be very careful with alcohol: it will not interfere with the antibiotics, but the antibiotics kill the 'good bacteria' in your digestive system, and you are far more likely to get really sick from it."

Christina replied: "If you don't take the medications as prescribed they will not work effectively. Take them with food or milk so you don't feel nauseous. And if they do give you diarrhea (which they probably won't) then take something like Pepto-bismol."
