Taking Nexium With Carafate Posts in Q&A
Carafate v/s zantac? I am taking nexium dailey for my stomach pain and heartburn but also taking carafate twice a day which helps a hell of a lot with slight heartburn and chest pain, so the doc switched me to zantac twice a day and i got instant heartburn and chest tightness and pains in the back and not feeling well and misable. So the doc put me back on the carafate w/ nexium and i was able to sleep last night, can anyone tell me why the carafate is more effective than the zantac and why i would have a seriously bad relaspe that bad for less than 24 hours of changing the meds?

jill48 replied: "Carafate actually coats your esophagus. Zantac and Nexium do not. Nexium is great because it can repair old tissue."

I have stomach promblems ( help )? Ok first, I have BILE from my gall bladder in my stomach.. My doctor ran some test and biospy and found bile in my stomach. Ok thats fine besides the fact I feel like I am dying each day. Second, I m bleeding internally in my stool. So now I m getting my second opinion from another doctor.. Cause my first doctor told me I will have to take medicine for the rest of my life.. I take Nexium Carafate (liquid) Zantac everyday and it doesn't help at all..

christianmom replied: "You definitely need to get a second opinion. Sounds like you have some pretty serious issues that goes beyond those medications. Good luck."

Cat replied: "You need to get yourself a second opinion, from a GI Dr if your first one was not one. They need to find out while you have this Bile going into your stomach making you feel so ill each day - that's not right. Whats the point in taking all these drugs each day if your symptoms don't get any better."

How long does it take to digest all your food? I have to take this pill (carafate) on an empty stomach and I can't take it in the morning cuz I take another pill(nexium) that will interact with it. How long can I wait to take my meds? I'm thinking before lunch time.

tysavage2001 replied: "If you are suppose to take it on an empty stomach .. anywhere from 2 to 4 hours between meals is how long it can take. Good Luck ! :)"

emma replied: "you really need to check with a healthcare professional for this. try a pharmacist for free, professional advice."

NAQ replied: "it can take days.. especially meats. if a pill directions says to take it on an empty stomach it doesnt mean literally. just wait some hours after eating to take it."

Christina T replied: "you should have spoken with your doctor or pharmacist. Usually you should wait atleast 5 hrs in between but it depends how bad your acid reflex is..Speak with your doctor"

fish n replied: "best to ask your doctor"

Red replied: "8 hours."

Upper GI Procedure? I am getting the upper GI in two days, i went to the doc yesterday for my upper stomach pains, extreme bloating and burning under my breastbone and burning under my armpits and sides of my breast are very tender. The doc scheduled an upper Gi to find out if there is an infection or ulcer and or polyps in my stomach causing all this discomfort. My question is will this test tell what is actually causing all this discomfort and or will this just be another day off of work with no results? I am currently taking nexium and carafate together which seem to be helping but I can barely eat w/out becoming very uncomptable until the food digest.

Lifecircus.com replied: "Up periscope"

the_only_solorose replied: "that depends entirely on which Upper GI procedure the doctor chooses to use. There are several different tests that fall in this category."

tinkerbell lvr replied: "well not sure thanks for the 2 points"

fiasco007 replied: "you have gerd. I just had an upper GI and it's no big deal. they noticed some inflamation from the food I eat. it was kind of fun. they put you out so one min your there, and the next you are waking up. try and see how long you can stay awake once they put you out."

KittyKat replied: "I had to have an upper GI years ago because I had bad stomach pains. They were able to give me results within a couple of days (nervous stomach, could easily get ulcers). Don't look at this as another day off work (negativity makes your pain level higher), look at it as a possible solution to your problems. If they don't get answers from this, then they will go to the next test and so on until they get results. Insurance companies won't cover some tests unless other tests have been done first so go with the flow and hopefully you will get answers soon. Good luck to you and hope you get to feeling better soon"

Sunshine315 replied: "It may or may not tell what the problem is but you've got to start somewhere, right? Go with it and hope that it gives you an answer. If not, then ask what the next step would be. Good luck."

lonepinesusan replied: "I have had the same symptoms and went thru several upper GI series as well as lower ones. After repeated tests and trips to the doctors they said it was buildup of gas especially under breastbone and that I had reflux, which I already knew and was taking meds for it for 3 yrs. No test is 100% accurate, but you have to start somewhere. Just don't let them poopoo you and say it is in your head. If it is uncomfortable keep after the docs until they find out what it is."

richard t replied: "who knows if it will give you the answers...the doctor thinks so..................I had one.not a bad procedure.............doesn't hurt"

Ashley B replied: "I just read in your answers someone said you get knocked out for an upper GI, that is not true. They give you berium to drink, and its a white chalky liquid that coats your stomach, then they give you crystals that kind of inflate your stomach, but they;re like pop rocks that you have to swollow. I hated it both times i had it done. Once when i was 10 and once in the last yearm im 17 now. They found no problems in my upper GI, but we found out its anixety thats my problem, yours kinda sounds like Acid Reflux, almost. A real bad case if it is. Anyways, u should get results from this! Good luck and lemme know how things turn out!!"

Luis G replied: "It sounds like you have an obstruction. You may have an infection as well but if your temperature is normal it might be and obstruction. Next thing to look at is white blood cell count. Is it unusually high? If it is this could mean tumors and cancer. The upper GI sucks and is very uncomfortable. Swallowing berrium is like a cement milk shake. Why have they not done an MRI ? It would show more. They usually use the cheapest way of testing first and the lower and upper GI are common. I had the lower GI once. They found I was allergic to milk. It's not good for everybody. Food allergies may be the problem. Most HMO's want the cheapest way of doing things no matter how much they inconvenience the patient. So question everything and get a second opinion. Ask nurses and veterinarians what they think. Since Nurses can't diagnose a problem they can give you a fair idea without having to worry about malpractice law suites. Vet's are doctors with more training then doctors. They too do not have to worry about those consequences and can give you a straight answer. Doctors won't tell you anything. They obey the HMO and the insurance companies. Question them find out and ask why. Use the internet to learn about your disease. Web MD is a good place to start."

Lissacal replied: "Are you having an x-ray procedure called an Upper GI (UGI)? This is a very good test and it is cost effective. It can show ulcers, hiatal hernias and reflux (where what you swallow goes backwards into the esophagus). "An upper gastrointestinal (UGI) series is done to: ****Find the cause of gastrointestinal symptoms, such as difficulty swallowing, vomiting, burping up food, belly pain (including a burning or gnawing pain in the center of the stomach, or indigestion. These may be caused by conditions such as hiatal hernia. ****Find narrow spots (strictures) in the upper intestinal tract, ulcers, tumors, polyps, or pyloric stenosis. ****Find inflamed areas of the intestine, malabsorption syndrome, or problems with the squeezing motion that moves food through the intestines (motility disorders). ****Find swallowed objects." Do you really have to sacrifice a whole work day? The procedure only takes about 30 minutes. It should be done in the morning, as you cannot eat after midnight the night before the study. Most outpatient imaging facilities or x-ray departments in hospitals offer early morning appointments. You should have no problem going to work after this examination."

S P replied: "if they haven't already they need to be doing an ultrasound first. That will rull out gallbladder before they do something invasive like that."

Stomach Ulcers or something else? The doc told me that I have stomach ulcer and the ER told me I have gastro something so I have an appt with gastro specialist next week. Are the symptoms usually neck back pain burning in the chest and under the arms extreme heartburn at time and burning in the left and right side of the chest and in the middle. At time my chest feels so tight it unbearable and uncomptable since i have been taking carafate and nexium it has helped ease the pain until i see the doc but i am still uncomptable are these normal signs of stomach ulcers or somthing else? Has anyone had similiar symptoms?

lilaggie94 replied: "Thats not a stomach ulcer, but I couldn't tell you what it is, its just not that."

chipmunkcall replied: "It sounds like you have a more advanced version of GERD. This might include the ulcers that the doctor reported you having. Until you appointment you want to restrict yourself to soft foods so that you do not make the situation any worse. I would suggest staying way from chips, nuts, crackers, toast, cookies, popcorn, and Cereal. This will help a bit also try taking honey to sooth pain that might be caused by the GERD."

Can heartburn really cause all this chestpain? I am still waiting to see the gastro doc next week but i have been on prilosec twice daily and still had heartburn and pain and ended up in the hospital where they ran test and blood and ultra sound on my stomach and everything was fine . I was then put on carafate twice day and nexium which seemed to be working i started to finally feel normal again w/out all the pain and discomformt in my chest and stomach with the exception and slight heartburn and discomfort but nothing like i have been so my reg doc told me to stop the carafate and start taking the zantac 150 twice day with the nexium i started these last night and woke up 4-5 times last night chest pains and burning like befor all day pains and burning in chest and back the doc changed my meds back to carafate twice a day and nexium. Can anyone tell me if they have went through this and what this is and how long this will take to get full relief from the discomfort?

WVPV07 replied: "I had the same thing, along with the burning and pain, I had a gnawing feeling in my stomach. My doctor started me on Preacid, then when my insurance wouldn't pay for Prevacid, switched me to Protonix. Luckily, the prevacid healed all of the errosions, and I now am pain free on the protonix. I have to watch what I am eating and drinking, but I feel so much better."

help me with my out of control acid reflux please? I was diagnosis with Gerd a few years ago. I take Nexium 40 mg twice a day, Regalin 3 times a day and Carafate liquid. Why am I still suffering? I don't eat the fun foods that I love, I drink one cup, if that of Simply Smooth coffee in the am.... I still have a terrible choking feeling in my throat, I am still coughing acid. It's really driving me crazy... I am losing weight to help, I have a little tummy, but I am not obese... I mean I see huge people pack away stuff and never suffer... why me? What can do? Any home remedies out there that are tried and true? Erica

Green Eyes replied: "Your esophogus may be eroding so much and closing. You might want to have an endoscopy done where they will insert a tube in through your mouth and down to your stomach. If your esophogus is closing, they will be able to push it back out. I have about the same problems and take almost the same meds & I too am not even close to being overweight and I'm only 24! After my procedure, I also have Gastritis."

hillary replied: "Please go to see a gastro doctor for a scope of your esophagus. My husband had these same symptoms and was diagnoised with esphageal cancer."

anton p replied: "The cure is not only a matter of what you eat. Stress is one of most common causes. You have to relax and also have a regulated lifestyle. Take meals at fixed hours, exercise, if you have stress at your job or at home take measures to eliminate it, avoid heavy meals and totally eliminate alcohol, coffee, tea, sodas, sauces, fried meals, onion, garlic, spices (cook with herbs), sleep on the side curled. This is not a matter to be addressed with a couple of pills or make a few sacrifices with the fun food and that's it, in no time you're back on track. This is a matter of rethinking your lifestyle for ever. Probably too much of the love food (chips, popcorn, nuts, mayo, burgers, beer, sodas and the like) has caused it in the first place. I had this condition and after 2 years of constant care I have reduced it to the point where it bothers me once in a month, maybe."

dighalbank replied: "Whether you are visiting your physcian regularly tell him your problem .I suggest endoscopic study of oesophagus and stomach ,liver functon tests and other relevant tests for GERD."

Preciosa replied: "I have the same problem. I actually asked a question related to this matter this morning. I wish I can find the cure too. I'm 24 yrs and thing. I cant deal with this problem! ! I am on medication too, I take 3 different med a day and doesn't seem to help either. I feel for you girl.. : ( I wish you the best."

I was prescribed Klonopin today and was wanting feedback from people who've been on it please!? I know this is kinda long, but please read: I initially went to the internal medicine clinic due to what my PCP thought was upper gastric troubles. I had a cholesystectomy and ERCP Feb. 13, 2007 and have had problems with my stomach ever since. I take 40 mg of Nexium in the morning and Carafate 4 times (or more) a day for horrible stomach pain. My stomach feels like theres a rock in it and it hurts to hold my kids. After telling the Doc this today and him pushing around all over my stomach, he said that he thinks I do not have the symptoms of a peptic ulcer (what my PCP thought) and that it was all nerve/anxiety related. Once I told him I have cyclothymia, OCD, ADHD and the occasional panic attack he said that Klonopin would be great for me and I dont even have to take the Carafate anymore because it is nothing to do with my stomach. I was wondering, do you think this would be a good pill for me? How did it help you? Thank you to all answers. I guess he gave me such a strong one because in 10 months I had a baby, had surgery, husband had an affair and my grandma passed away. He gave me .5 mg to anyone wondering as well. I already see a counselor every 2 weeks and a psychiatrist once a month who gives me my Adderall. The Doc that gave me the Klonopin today wants me back in 6 weeks so he can check on the dosage.

sissy replied: "I took Klonopin before It made me a Zombie. It is very strong. If you have anxiety he could have given you something less strong."

Witchy replied: "I,ve taken it... after the birth of my twins.. I had post par tum depression and it did help. It is usually given in low dosages. It takes 2 weeks to get in your system... and you need to be weaned off... no deciding to quit taking your pills... depends on on how long you have been on them but they can give you the DT's if you go cold turkey. Yes they can be strong... but give it a try... what works for me might not work for you.. and vice versa. I,d say give it a month(2 weeks to take effect) and 2 weeks to see if you feel any better. If you don't feel ANY better go back to DR and tell him, If you feel like a ZOMBIE(the drug isn't for you..or your taking to much). You shouldn't drink while taking these. And from past experience... learn how to make YOU happier and more relaxed... you can use breathing techniques to help with anxiety also. You will be OK... just stay aware of your feelings and talk to your Dr about everything ."

angelam replied: "while it's true your "nerves" may be part of your stomach problems, did the M.D. recommend a Phych doctor along with that Klonopin? I've taken klonopin and it did help me but you need to be followed by a psychologist or psychiatrist if he thinks that's some of your problem. Klonopin did help with my OCD and I am bipolar. It helped for awhile but the dose needs to be adjusted from time to time or you may need a med change. If he thought you needed meds maybe you need to learn how to handle your stresses so you do not need the klonopin and some of the other meds for your stomach after awhile. You should not ignore your mental health. We learn to eat "heart smart" Exercise and every thing else for our bodies, why not learn how to think healthy."

amanda r replied: "it really works for me i have panic attacks so bad that my body will go and i cant even feel my legs to walk. its really scary."

The Reverend replied: "I had it prescribed to me to use before a transatlantic flight, I had been afraid to fly previously and was really anxious. It chilled me out and I was fine to fly and I ended up getting over my fear of flying. I didn't notice any side effects at all, it was great, it just made my anxiety disappear."

AJ replied: "I've put quite a number of people on Klonopin (mostly heroin users in detox). I find it to be very useful and potent. It has the strongest anti-convulsant activity amongst all the other benzo drugs (Xanax, Valium etc.). It also has quite a bit of smooth muscle-relaxant properties making it very useful for stomach pains related to anxiety. The good thing is that Klonopin has a long half-life (it takes quite some time to get all of it out of your system), so the withdrawal symptoms (in case you forget a dose) don't come on so quickly. Which brings me to my next point, the withdrawals. As you probably know, the drugs in this category are all highly addictive. If you are going to be using Klonopin for longer than 3 weeks, you have to be prepared to taper this drug very very slowly when coming off of it. Side-note: Klonopin is classified as a high-potency benzodiazepine. Without adding too many technical details and putting you to sleep, this means that Klonopin can be a lot harder to stop using than other benzos like Valium or Ativan. Given the symptoms you have, I think Klonopin would be very helpful and useful for you. Hope this helps."

Rare stomach diseases? I had an upper gi done and they took three biopsy's and they came back with they think i have this rare disease eosinophilic gastroenteritis the doc ordered some more test blood test last week and i am still waiting on the test resluts. I have lost a total of 12lbs since this started llittle of 30days ago and started on ensure drinking this and have came back to getting some urge to eat again but still hurts bad to eat and the pain under my breast bone and the burning in my chest and the chest tightness is making it so diffucult to keep eating but i ened up with a sinus infection after the upper gi now on zithromax for that on top of the nexium, carafate, ib800 and clardin for the sinuses. Do anyone know if this what i have and how long befor i'm normal again, i have to get another gi done in two weeks where he wants to go into my small bowel now also and biospy.

Angela C replied: "for the most accurate information, call your doctors office and request copies of any literature they have on this disease. Never be afraid to ask questions or to get a second opinion."

Gibulet replied: "Eosinophilic Gastroenteritis is a rare disease in which the lining of the stomach, small intestines and large intestines become infiltrated with Eosinophilis, a type of white blood cell. Eosinophilic Gastroenteritis can spread to other organs. It mostly affects children and young adults. It is also referred to as EG. The most common symptoms of esoinophilic gastroenteritis are, abdominal pain, weight loss, nausea and vomiting, diarrhea and bloody diarrhea. The exact cause of esoinophilic gastroenteritis is unknown. Approximately one half of EG patients have multiple food allergies and/or elevated immunoglobulin, suggesting an allergic etiology. Esoinophilic gastroenteritis can be treated. Corticosteriod medications are usually successful in treating eosinophilic gastroenteritis. To diagnose your doctor will take a biopsy of the tissue in your stomach, small intestines and large intestines to see if you have eosinophilic gastroenteritis. Carafate is given to you to help any ulcers in your stomach and duodenum heal. Make sure you do NOT use ibuprofen, advil or naproxen medicines, as they will really hurt your stomach. It may take up to 8 weeks to heal your stomach completely, and after that you still may need to take a daily medication all the time. Carafate may react with other drugs taken at the same time, preventing their full absorption. It is best to take other drugs 2 hours before or after sucralfate to avoid drug interactions. Antacids can be used with this medicine, but they should be taken at least 30 minutes before or after sucralfate. Is IB800 ibuprofen? STOP TAKING THAT. I have IBS and that is horrible for it! No ibuprofen, advil, naprosen or naproxen sodium. Tylenol only, or ask your doctor for a stronger pain killer. Talk to your doctor if you are very worried. He is doing all the tests he can to narrower the diagnoses down. Trust me, I know its frustrating. The most important thing is while he is doing this is pain maintence and getting you eating again."

brother3 replied: "Eosinophilic gastroenterritis is rare disease.it is due to abnormal infiltration of eosinophilic(one kind of white cell, usually showed abnormal number happen in allergic disease)in stomach and other part of gi tract;small gut colon, liver, gallbladder and is unknown etiology. Some could associate with some drug intake such as;ace inhabitor(enalapril)or angiotensin converting enzyme(diovan).patient with bronchial asthma has high rate to have this illness. The diagnosis base on tissue biopsy.Treatment with corticosteroid(prednson etc) is highly effect and can be completely remission. This illness has been found on on other system such as brain and lung."

PPI Question? I have been on nexium but my insurance recently stopped paying for the nexium which i was taking twice daily and carafate twice daily due to a rare stomach disease EG that I have, so my doctor switched me to prilosec with carafate both twice a day i started getting indigestion chest pains upset stomach serever neck pain and loosing weight and lost of appetite again so the doctor got the insurance to approve the prevacid 30 mg twice a day with the carafate twice a day will i get the same side effects from this combination of med's or will this work like the meds i was orginally one? I have never taken this drug befor of prevacid is it as good as the nexium or is the nexium the best thing to take.? I have to go back to my stomach doctor on Thursday so he can schedule my second upper gi so get a closer look to see if i need to be place on steriods since this is the only treatment for EG if the PPi's don't completely work and get me back to normal.

W W D replied: "There doesn't seem to be a lot of difference among the various PPI's, but there is a matter of dosage adjustment and individual variation that argues against allowing insurance companies to change their formularies willy-nilly as they do. This is another of those areas that should eventually be handled through legislation, but nothing short of threatening a British-style NHS is likely to budge the insurers much."

TweetyBird replied: "Carafate (sucralfate) isn't a proton pump inhibitor. It adheres to and coats the lining of the stomach forming a protective barrier. Prevacid (lansoprazole), on the other hand, is a PPI. I regularly pass these two meds to nearly all of my patients. They are very good, very effective. I wish you luck and hope they work as well for you."
