Find Synthroid Risks in Questions
risks of stopping synthroid? I have been on synthroid for a hypothyroidism for about a year. The levels have been up and down, dosage was adjusted. The doctor wants me to come off of it because my levels are low. What are the risks of stopping with my history?

Aspasia replied: "Even when stopping the medication, the doctor will likely order follow-up lab work in a few weeks to check your thyroid levels to make sure they are normal. Many people with hypothyroidism have changing thyroid levels over time. Stopping this medication under a doctor's supervision is not risky. You just have to keep all lab and follow-up appointments. Thyroid problems are something that has to be monitored continuously for life. When I had hyperthyroidism (Grave's Disease) I was stopped on my medication abruptly when it made me the opposite, hypothyroid. Sometimes the hormonal changes are noticeable, but it is not overly risky. You do not want to continue taking thyroid hormones when your TSH (thyroid stimulating hormone) levels are low. That means that the body (pituitary gland, in fact) is trying to get your thyroid to slow down. Continuing thyroid hormone medication could cause you to become hyperthyroid, which means that there is too much thyroid hormone being produced. Hyperthyroid symptoms are hard on the heart and circulatory system. Keep all of your appointments and follow your doctor's advice, and you will be just fine. Sometimes it can take a long time to find that correct dose, and even that can change. Good luck."

What are the risks or not taking my meds. for hypothyroidism? I have had hypothyroidism for about 4 or 5 years now and I was just diagnosed with Hashimoto's disease. I take 125 mcg of synthroid. Is that alot? What happens if I quit taking it other than my symptoms come back?

Elizabeth replied: "My sister in law has Hashimoto's disease. If you quit taking your meds, you will eventually get really sick and die. You can't live without your thyroid. Synthroid gives you the chemicals that your thyroid produces. Why would you quit taking the medication? You can't possibly be thinking rationally here. Your meds are about average also. You are just taking something that naturally occurs in most people's bodies, yours just doesn't make it any more. So if you want to get sick and probably die, just don't take your meds. But I suggest you talk to your doctor who will hopefully talk some sense into you!"

pharmgirlsc replied: "Do NOT stop taking this medication with out talking to the doctor. It can kill you!!"

Step replied: "You die, so go for it, leave the meds on the table."

flower replied: "One thing you should not just stop taking this medication. I've seen people take 200 mcg of synthroid. Your taking it because your thyroid is not working properly. You should talk to your doctor before you stop taking your thyroid medication. This regulates many things in your system. You could feel tired and moody. I would ask before I stopped."

FertilityBlend and Synthroid?? I am on synthroid (a medication to help regulate my thyroid, which slowed down during my last pregnancy and still hasn’t gone back to normal) and I read about these fertility pills at GNC. I am planning on asking my doctor about them at my next appointment but I am wondering if anyone has been on synthroid and has taken FertilityBlend. Are there any risks in combining these two? I know with the synthroid I can’t take anything else at least for 4 hours after I take it and this includes prenatal vitamins. I am wondering if it is the same with these pills. Does anyone have any information? Thank you.

DNA replied: "Why do you want to take fertility blend? Are your progesterone levels low? If so, use USP grade progesterone cream. Many who are hypothyroid, also have low progesterone levels. Also, you want to have the morning TSH around 1.0 on Synthroid. You might also want to check to see how you are converting T4 into T3. This is a free t3 test, which can be run when you have the TSH test in the morning."

hashimoto's and pregnancy risks? I just found out I am pregnant again after having a miscarriage in July. Since then I have also found out I have Hashimoto's and just started my new dose of Synthroid so my thyroid is not regulated yet. I am afraid of having another miscarriage. What is the risks of having Hashimoto's during pregnancy?

reifguy replied: "counseil with your endocrinologist and gynaecologist to adjust the dose becoz in pregnancyu might need extra dose of synthyroid due to physiological changes"

Can you go without Thyroid medication? If you are Hypothyroid and blood tests show your levels to be very low, can you go without taking the synthroid? If so, what are the risks? This would have to do with insurance issues. Just curious.

livy replied: "dont risk anything, your life is too important"

profesora x replied: "No, you can't go without synthroid. If you don't take it there is a possiblity of lapsing into a coma or even worse."

anica replied: "if you wanna die"

jgardn2002 replied: "thyroid hormone regulates the rate metabolism in all cells of the body. Without thyroid hormone, you will become extremely weak and have difficulty staying alert. You're skin and hair will become dry and coarse, and you'll have problems with constipation, thin bones, and muscle atrophy. It can also cause your extremities and stomach swell with fluid. It can become life-threatening with heart & lung failure. If you are having any of these problems or know that you have low thyroid hormone, you need to see your doctor or your health will suffer"

A Friend replied: "If your doctor performed a blood test and checked your (TSH) and it shows that your thyroid production is too low.. You do need to start treatment. Sometimes a community may have a clinic for the people, that have jobs but cannot afford insurance... (if that is the insurance problem)... People with hypothyroidism may have the following symptoms... thay may become overweight, easily exhausted. and subject to recurrent infection. They may also experience menstrual disorders, intolerance of cold, dry skin and hair. Prolonged hypothyroidism ... will cause signs of reduced general body functioning."

Elizabeth replied: "Please, don't put your health in the hands of an amateur forum. Respect your mind and body. Consult your doctor."

I got pregnant 4months after I had radioactive iodine treatment? I received radioactive iodine treatment 4 months ago, on December 24, 2007. I know you are suppose to wait at least six months before getting pregnant. My fiance and I were using protection, but I just found out that I am 4 weeks pregnant. I am currently taking 137 dose of synthroid. Can I still have a healthly baby? It's been 4 months since the treatment, so is the baby as risk? HELP I'm so scared.

Gypsydayne replied: "That is something you need to discuss with your oncologist & obstetrician. The OB will need to monitor you carefully. Anything can harm the health of a baby but you've gotten pregnant before the 6 month wait time so your pregnancy is very risky. There could be major fetal developmental problems, etc. Make a Dr. appt. right away."

Kiki replied: "You (and your baby) will probably be fine. However, in the first instance make an appointment to see an obstratrician and discuss it with him."

thyroid cancer...? risks for other cancer? i was diagnosed w/ thyroid cancer in july of 2005 - i had a total thyroidectomy aug 1 2005 and went through iodine radiation (and was declared clear in feb 2006)...i have been on synthroid for the last yr (was in a MVA in feb in which i was taken off the synthroid for some time) but i also have been exposed to the HPV virus...my pap smears have come back ok so far, but i know many times its underlying for several years - is there a greater chance of me getting cervical cancer or other cancers bc i have already had cancer? Are there specific tests i should be going for, like complete scans, etc? im going for my 1 yr neck ultrasound next wk, should i ask for anything else...this has been scaring me for a while bc my greatest dream is to have children and i want to take every precaution - i have a $300 copay to get the HPV vaccine, and cant afford that right now - but if anyone has suggestions of what i could do, my heart and soul would greatly appreciate it - much anticipated thanks XoXo I am a 23 y/o female with ebv, some depression, stress (i know who doesnt...lol) and a very low immune system - just to give u some background, i was diagnosed at 22 - non smoker, non drinker, and they said the cancer was environmentally caused. they found two solid nodules that were both cancerous and removed the entire thyroid. paternal grandfather had prostate cancer and maternal grandmother had thyroid problems, nothing that needed to be treated.

Naomi w replied: "Hun,sincerly, please don't take it wrong, but you just should be happy because you just got no more cancer girl!!! you're cancer freee!!! you pass the whole thing, the quimo, the doc's apointments, girl, just enjoy life that God almigtghy give you, forget about the future, just live your present, give thakn's to God because you're cleanyou have no more cancer,or any sicknes ok?put it in your head, repeat as many times necesary,i'm cancer free, enjoy your life ok? blessings"

lalunaestaaqui replied: "hi, i to was diagnosed with thyroid cancer in Oct of 05. i have no family history of any cancer in my family. i just got a sore throat and a lump appeared. found out that the right side of thyroid was as big as a golf ball. had it entirely removed and i take synthroid. i did not have to do the iodine. so don't put your self in a state of worry you will be fine."

janehart21 replied: "Hey there, I was diagnosed with thyroid cancer with metastases to my lymph nodes. That was over 9 years ago (I'm only 28). I know it's scary to go through that and "female" problems (I've had abnormal paps and it can freak you out.) The key is to not worry about it. If you spend your time thinking and stressing over it, your health may decline and make you more susceptible. Enjoy being cancer free and just take care of yourself."

BadaBing replied: "Research on cancer and the genetic code looks like it may at long last produce real breakthroughs For more info, visit:"

David W replied: "Thre are secral comments that you have made that indicate that the medica;pmdustry is using you to make a profit. You will benefit very significantly by spending time looking at all the sites mentioned below, but especially the first report, as that gets you to a correct understanding. It's a lot of reading, but its worth it. I have always believed that the mainstream medical industry is not interested in finding a cure for cancer because it makes too much profit with its present barbarous methods. Eventually, I came across a detailed report which agreed with my findings, and I have included it in my web page at By reading this report, you will also convince yourself that it is best to ignore the mainstream cancer industry, and seek alternative cures. Also you should bear in mind that the medical industry will do anything to protect its profitable position, including disparaging alternative healers or even creating bogus court cases. I believe that cancer is a whole body thing, which in 80 percent of cases manifests itself by producing symptoms in the weaker parts of the body, and therefore appearing localised. It is this treatment of symptoms instead of cause which creates the profitable, yet non-successful approach of mainstream medicine. Some cures are listed on the web page too. It is therefore obvious that a holistic approach is required, based on cleansing, diet, exercise and debugging. CLEANSING The best way of cleansing is to fast. but if a patient is too weak for that, or does not fancy the idea, then alternative cleanses are available. Colon Cleanse Bowel cleanse kidney cleanse Liver cleanse Gallbladder cleanse Pancreas cleanse DIET, The best diet is vegetarian, avoiding all processed, frozen or micro-waved foods and drinks, and based on fresh fruit, fresh vegetables - preferably organic, nuts and seeds. Drinks should be clean water or freshly squeezed orange juice. Many researchers promote the benefits of vitamin B17 as a healer. this can be found in the following foods: Apple seeds, alfalfa sprouts, apricot kernels, bamboo shoots, barley, beet tops, bitter almond, blackberries, boysenberries, brewer’s yeast, brown rice, buckwheat, cashews, cherry kernels, cranberries, currants, fava beans, flax seeds, garbanzo beans, gooseberries, huckleberries, lentils, lima beans, linseed meat, loganberries, macadamia nuts, millet, millet seed, peach kernels, pecans, plum kernels, quince, raspberries, sorghum cane syrup, spinach, sprouts (alfalfa, lentil, mung bean, buckwheat, garbanzo), strawberries, walnuts, watercress, yams. A commercial preparation of B17 is available called Laetrile. EXERCISE Exercise should be sufficient to create a sweat, but not sufficient to make you gasp for breath or feel over-tired. About one hours exercise every day is best. DEBUGGING There are various theories about how bugs create cancer. Hulda Clark suggests that parasites are the cause, and that they can be disposed of by using a zapper. Did thyroid medication prevent you from getting preeclampsia during your next pregnancies? I have hypothyroidism, and they didn't find out until AFTER the baby was born. I had severe preeclampsia. I am getting ready to get pregnant again, and am on synthroid, but still worry that preeclampsia could happen again, earlier and more severe. Should I look for a "high risk" obgyn this time? Please don't tell me to see the doc....I am going to my doc this afternoon. I just want to hear the experiences of other women or their families. Thanks!

Ariamay replied: "I am hypothyroid as well, and didn't find out until after my daughter was born and I just couldn't lose the weight, had no energy, yadda yadda. I also had preeclampsia in the last several weeks of my pregnancy and was induced at 37 weeks. I hated my OB, the man was terrible and had the bedside manner of a rat. I have since switched Ob's and asked this nice doctor a million questions in regards to the preeclampsia issue. I was told by him that alot of first pregnancies end up toxic (read health issues for the mother, ie preeclampsia, etc), and that a bad first pregnancy does not automatically equate to another high risk pregnancy the 2nd time around. Granted you do have an elevated risk of preeclampsia, but it's not a 99%, gonna have it, you can't avoid it thing. I wouldn't think synthroid would keep you from getting preeclampsia the second time around, but I would think it would totally help in regulating all the body functions that it is supposed to and possibly make the pregnancy a little easier. I hope this helps a bit, and good luck to you!"

Amie K replied: "Unfortunately, no matter what the circumstances there is no saying for sure when and if you get preeclampsia. I have had it twice, the first delivering at 27 weeks and the second 25 weeks. If I were you I wouldn't see anybody BUT a perinatologist. And, be choosy with your specific one. My regular OB/GYN was imsulted when I told him I would be going to one when I was ready to get pregnant again, but with both pregnancies, he had to refer me to one when the preeclampsia hit. It's just not worth going to a "regular" ob/gyn when you know your pregnancy isn't "normal." Good luck"

Mel replied: "wouldn't have thought so"

Uterus Linning Question? How long does it take for the uterus lining to thicken while on synthroid? I'm on day 8 of my medication. I am unable to conceive on my own. I was put on provera & synthroid. How long would it take for my uterus to thicken while on synthroid 50mcg? Weeks, Months ? I know there would be a high risk of miscarriage if I were to start trying now. I'm on my 8th day of the medication. help?thnx

Vicky replied: "This is a question or your doctor. I'd imagine it would be days or weeks rather than months. Are you scheduled for an ultrasound to check on the thickness of the endometrium? I'd call them back and ask if I was you!"
