What are the symptoms of consuming too much caffeine? I drink a lot of coffee, and I know that I'm supposed to limit my caffeine intake to 8 ounces of coffee per day, but more coffee keeps me going. I'm productive at work, don't have mood problems, sleep fine at night, haven't gotten sick in years, and I work out regularly and am always making progress in getting faster and stronger, so I feel very healthy--is there a way to know that I'm overdosing on caffeine?

~Kimmie~ replied: "3 cups of coffee is considered an average or moderate dose, but 10 cups of coffee per day is considered excessive. Jitteriness Difficulty sleeping Headaches Anxiety Flushed face Nausea Accelerated heartbeat Caffeine overdose results in gastrointestinal and cardiorespiratory symptoms Those who take these preparations without reducing their regular caffeine intake from other sources may risk developing what has been termed "caffeinism" which is caused by toxic levels of caffeine. The symptoms include nausea, diarrhoea, indigestion, irregular heartbeat and respiration, light-headedness, jitteriness and frequent urination.1 These symptoms may also develop in those not habitually exposed to caffeine who ingest a moderate dose."

Neil M replied: "If it feels good, do it."

Vivacity replied: "Ever take Vivarin? Has a lot of caffeine in it. It made me jittery and dehydrated when I used it years ago to get through the over-partying-be functional-at-work times. Those are two symptoms of caffeine overload. It doesn't sound like you've got a problem with your intake if you have no adverse affects like insomnia and mood swings."

rustoria617 replied: "You'll know when it happens. Insomnia, jittery, rapid pulse."

How long does it take for caffeine withdrawl symptoms to go away? I have been drinking 1-3 cups of coffee/cans of diet coke every day for more than a year and I'm trying to stop. Can someone tell me (maybe if you've been through something similar) how long it takes for the headaches and fatigue to go away? I have been caffeine-free for 4 days and so far the symptoms haven't gotten any better. Also, are there any home remedies or quick-fix cures that might help? Thanks very much!

Kimmie B replied: "it takes about a month..well it did for me..it is tough going..i had headaches constantly..it sucks...i slip up and have a coffee once in a great while..and i can definitely tell the diference...i get really jittery and it sucks"

Thomas B replied: "I quit caffeine and it tooka few weeks to get over the headaches. i guess it could have been worse, but it sucked for those 2 weeks."

P_P_K replied: "So sorry!!! I know how you feel!!! Well, the conventional wisdom is that symptoms of caffeine withdrawal should go away within about a week. That's average. For me, it takes about that long. As far as quick fixes, I suggest not quitting cold turkey! You'll lessen your symptoms dramatically if you cut down slowly over a week or two. If you drink three cups/cans a day, cut down to two, then one, then none. That might help! Good luck!"

Santa C replied: "A cup of tea or 2 might take the edge off plus tea's supposed to be good for you."

Angela N replied: "Different for everyone. I am pregnant and have been staying away from it. But a had a cup of coffee the other day and thought I would NEVER get to sleep again. Next day, HEADACH!!! Blah."

Oh, yes. replied: "Just a day or so. Flush it out with water."

dragon_of_phx replied: "First did you go cold turkey or step down? If you when cold turkey there really isn't anything you can do except flush it out with water or you could go to the stepping down method. The stepping down method is from 3 cups of coffee you go two for one week. The next week you go to one. For the third week you have one every other day. Then the next week one every three days, until you no longer have to have diet Coke every day. Until it's just something you have as a treat or as a needed basis. I went through it to and it hard at first but it gets easier and you just have to keep at it."

gg replied: "I have tried quitting coffee, and will no longer try. I am resolved on one point: I can't live without it. It takes 1-3 days of headaches, 2-4 weeks of extreme fatigue. Whenever I cut back on coffee, I crave chocolate, and eat so much of it that it makes me sick. Better to just drink the coffee. Have you tried just cutting down to one cup? Why are you trying to quit? It isn't that bad for you."

lynno replied: "it could take up to 3 weeks, but get some vitamins ,down you."

TC replied: "For me it took 2 days of feeling utterly terrible and one day more of just feeling listless and wrung out. This was after 40 years of around 10 - 12 cups of strong coffee a day. It might be better to cut back gradually unless you have time off work."

matty.. replied: "I quit cold turkey and it was awful. I had headaches for a week and felt fatigued for about 2 months. I actually cried once because my husband was drinking coffee in front of me. I now drink decaf green tea, but nothing will ever replace coffee. :( My mornings have never been the same. I wish you luck."

I find I'm drinking 4-5 cups of strong caffeinated coffee per day; what are the dangers of too much caffeine? I am looking for a full list of symptoms, and any safe alternative for keeping me awake. Also, is it healthy to drink too much coffee?

brainlady replied: "anxiety and increased heart rate and bad sleep. Tony blair had a heart murmur once- they blamed it on too much strong italian coffee. It's not life threatening, but try to cut down or you may get the former mentioned side effects."

SweetlyEvil replied: "Caffeine will give you bad skin, palpitations, bad breath, insomnia. I gave up caffine years ago and I don't need anything to keep me awake. Caffeine is the root of all evil."

Hedge Witch replied: "I drink that much and more - I haven't seen any particular ill effects from it although I do find that I am warmer than all the people around me and also more "regular" (if you get my drift!) It doesn't even keep me awake at nights!"

Jenni replied: "Nope not at all. If you drink too much you will have to go to hospital. If you drank any more than you are you would be very sick. Drink less!"

compyshop replied: "Apart from the anxiety, and other items listed above, Coffee is also a diuretic, which means you will go to the toilet more often than normal... As they say, a little of what you fancy does you good, but don't overdo it.. changing to decaf will help a bit, but it probably a better idea just to cut down to 2 or 3 cups a day.."

LAURIE replied: "Causes hard work for your kidneys and heart."

countryguyhfc replied: "I used to drink that much during the week and then not drink any on the weekends. I suffered terrible headaches on the weekends. It took me a while to figure out that the headaches were caused by caffeine withdrawal. I have cut back to 1 good sized mug a day now and don't have any problems with headaches anymore."

Heron replied: "Try to cut back by one cup. Four cups a day should be okay for the average healthy adult. Too much caffeine can raise your blood pressure. It might also raise your risk of osteoporosis (thinning of the bones) and kidney stones. Taking a calcium supplement or adding milk to your coffee may reverse these last two effects, though. It can also cause gastric upset. Drinking water between cups of coffee is a good idea. That way, you won't get dehydrated. If you need a little pick-me-up, a cup of green tea might help. If you have two cups of coffee in the morning, you can drink green tea throughout the rest of the day with no problems, since it contains 1/4 as much caffeine as coffee. Green tea with added fruit flavors might be more palatable than plain green tea at first."

murigenii replied: "I drink an average of a pot of coffee a day, though I don't like it really strong. Drinking that much can discolor your teeth, make you pee more (caffeine is a diuretic) so you can be slightly dehydrated, can cause an up set stomach if you haven't eaten enough, and depending on your age can cause problems sleeping, and it can aggravate some medical conditions you already have. Oh and you become addicted to the caffeine. So, if you cut back drastically or just stop drinking it you will have withdrawals. Different for different people, for me the withdrawals are major headache that aspirin won't touch."

sgregory1522 replied: "Adrenal fatigue. Poor tolerance to stress. Insulin resisance (cause of so many diseases I don't want to name) I have it now, and it's not good. Tired, low energy, ect. Look up on yahoo for more. It takes 3-6 months to get back to normal and all of these supplements and lifestyle changes to get normal. I did have a lot of stress, and caffeine added to it and caused the adrenal fatigue. Switch to Ginseng (panax if you are male or siberian if you are female). It gives you a natural energy lift, doesn't deplete your body of things that lead to adrenal fatigue, it actually HELPS you deal with stress better, and it repairs your adrenals. Rhodelia rosea (sp?) is good too. Gives you energy and helps you deal with stress. I think that this would be the best herb to use as it also helps with so many other things. Improves mood. Look this one up, too. This and ginseng are called "adaptogens' they help your body stay normal under stress and bring it back to normal is you have already had stress before. I drink a lot of decaf green tea, too. About 5 cups a day. It doesn't give you a huge boost, but it helps a little along with everything else I take. B vitamins are good for energy. Multivitamin, exercise, enough sleep, fish oil. But please get off the caffeine. Its bad and the fact that you have to up to dosage after a while isn;t good. Try one of the herbs above which actually make you MORE healthy andgive you lots of energy and ability to concentrate, work longer than before, and feel better too. But don't let that take the place of sleep, you need that to feel alert and energetic anywAY. oH, LOOK THIS up on a search engine. There are far too many effects to name and people on here usually are not as thorough as a well researched article would be. Mercola.com is good, he probably has an article or 2 on this."

jord1986 replied: "it can discolor your teeth. i don't think 4 cups a day is too excessive though."

How can I minimize caffeine withdraw symptoms? Three days ago I switched to decaf coffee and tea. This is in response to my realization that I had developed an addiction and the caffeine is overstimulating my pituitary which is presenting in various symptoms. I started with a headache two days ago that will not go away. I'm also feeling generally lethargic and having withdrawal symptoms. Any suggestions for minimizing these symptoms? How long will this last? FYI... I am not a soda drinker. I drink lots of water and I eat a whole foods diet. I also excercise daily.

little Glo replied: "After your 3 days, your headache should be gone. I too, have had caffeine withdrawal headache. They are really bad. Next time...if there is a next time....try getting off caffeine a little at a time."

ditdit replied: "drink your caffeinated coffee. slowly introduce decaf grounds into your regular grounds 3-1, 2-1, 1-1, then go to decaf completely."

Carla W replied: "I gave up all sugar/caffeine drinks 3 months ago. The best thing I can tell you is just stick it out. I know the headaches suck try something over the counter some pain killers like Excedrin have small amounts of caffeine in them so if you think it would help to " ween " yourself off that would be the way to go. However I just took Tylenol for the headaches and the withdraws only lasted 7 - 10 days. Hope it helps. Stick with it believe it or not I have more energy now than ever."

Is it weird that I would experience caffeine withdrawal symptoms when drinking caffeine? So, I gave up caffeine. Three days later I was suffering horribly. It manifests in headaches, toothaches, and earaches. After those days of being miserable were over, I took just 1 drink of soda, and immediately got all of those symptoms again. Yeah, but that's what is happening. After the caffeine is out of my system and I intake it, I get those symptoms. It does limit the amount of caffeine I take in though.

cement211 replied: "you sound like your having withdrawal symptoms from caffeine. i have found the soda had so much sugar that the caffeine wasn't so bad"

Crystal♥of♥Iris replied: "Ugh. I know the feeling. I'm exactly like that too when I don't drink my coffee for one day. You shouldn't feel the symptoms when you intake caffeine, though."

Does Cocoa help get rid of caffeine symptoms? I took 2, 200mg caffeine pills. Not reading the bottle. I feel stupid. What can help get rid of the symptoms such as arrhythmia's, jitters, etc..

briggy replied: "see/call a doctor please! dont get sick take care!"

Resourceful - Daniel replied: "Water, just keep drinking water. It will eventually leave your system."

kethander replied: "You'll be fine after it wears off. Cocoa (all chocolate) has caffeine in it too. So don't drink cocoa. 400 mg of caffeine is less than two cups of starbucks coffee, so don't worry."

What are the symptoms of caffeine allergy? Is it possible that you can get red eyes, dark circles under your eyes, constant ear popping and pain in the back of your head by drinking too much coffee and soda? I drink 2 medium lattes and 2 sodas a day usually.

B-mo replied: "I am not sure that you will find a clear answer to this question, but I used to drink a lot of coffee and soda (diet) and I had similarly symptoms, I also felt really crappy overall. Now I drink 1 cup of coffee/day and that is it. There is also a slight possibility that you are reacting to the milk or soy in your lattes. My sister gets ear infections if she consumes a lot of milk products, my brother gets them if he consumes soy! Yikes! Anyway, try cutting down and switching things out and see what happens!"

huggz replied: "The only way to know for sure it to cut out the caffeine for at least a week and see how the symptoms respond. Go for decaff coffee and caffeine free soda. Caffeine is a neurotoxin (damages the nerves in large doses) so the pain in the head is a definite possibility for allergy to caffeine."

does anyone know if red dye #40 causes the same symptoms as caffeine? Does anyone know if red dye #40 causes the same symptoms as caffeine? My husband is not able to have anything that contains caffeine because he gets heart palpitations. But the other day someone offered him fruit punch and we noticed that he immediately started experiencing the same symptoms as if he had had caffeine. Can someone inform us as to the different food colorings we should avoid. The one on the fruit punch was red dye #40. Thank you.

versantly replied: "it can if you are allergic to it. avoid the product -read labels. keep your epi pen & benedryl handy at all times. learn CPR & follow up with the allergist."

How often can I drink a cup of coffee and not experience tolerance or withdrawal symptoms to caffeine? I want to retain the option of being able to use caffeine when I want to but not get to the point where a cup doesn't work or where I have to have a cup to function regularly.

cheergirl replied: "you can drink one small cup a day!"

Tia replied: "Everyone has a different tolerance, you'll just have to experiment and see. Some people can't drink a cup of coffee 5 hours before bed because they'll be up all night with the shakes, but I've tested and I can drink three mugs in a row and still fall asleep within an hour if I really want to. I obviously have a very strong tolerance for it (I usually drink a mug of black coffee, strength 4-5, it keeps me going for around 3-5 hours without feeling tired or sleepy but it's not going to keep me awake if I decide I really want to sleep) I advise starting with a mug of latte a day and see how you go with it, if you get to the point of "ugh, I actually NEED coffee NOW!" or you suddenly feel all your energy take a dive a little while after drinking it then cut it back to every other day because your body is relying on it too much. If you get nothing then you can try drinking more than one a day or try a different strength. I don't advise more than three a day as your body won't even notice the effects."
