beernotcider replied: "The side effects from prednisone are many and varied, but should go away in about a week after stopping the meds. By the way , did your doctor notrecommend a tapering-off the prednisone ?"
Christy replied: "Most medicines stay in your system anywhere between a couple of days to a couple of weeks after you take them.
Im assuming that because the medicine was kinda "instant" relief it wont take a couple of weeks.
*by instant I mean you dont take it for weeks before it helps."
Prednisone and migraines? I'm only 14 years old.
I had my first surgery last year, because of an imflammation.
(i have crohn's disease)
Not something i want to go through again,It was a tough time for me,and i was scared of course.
I stopped taking prednisone, not too long ago.
By doctor, lowered the dose then i completely stopped.
but now i have these constant migraines!
and they're killing me(not literally) but they're painful and i cant handle it anymore.
Is this normal?
i need to know,,please help
ok,thanks. :]
i told the doctor about my headache/migraine once, and he said if it gets worked,we need to check it out.
but that was awhile ago,now i get the headaches/migraines,constantly like 4 times a week.
sry,i meant to say worse**
the last butcher replied: "hey Zoey, my sister was on it for 5 years be for she finally got off of them and i don't remember her saying it caused her to have head aches, but i will ask her and get back with you ! have you been to a doctor ?"
Alexa replied: "Hi there.
I have ulcerative colitis and had to have all my colon removed, so I'm with you on surgeries.
I took prednisone frequently, almost every year I have to take it for one thing or another (I have some others associated diseases) and I never had migraines after I stoped it. Even once in hospital when they stoped it cold (after one of thesurgeires) I had abstinence problems but no migraines.
Talk to your doctor again. It might be related with you stopping (if you're taking it for too long) but I never heard of it.
As you have Crohn's can it be for lack of some vitamins or minerals? I know that sometimes I have lots of cramps due to lack of potassiun or magnesium or K vitamin as I don't absorb them propely even with supplements.
Hope everything goes well for you. Inflamatory disease is harsh. Best of luck!!!"
Steroids (prednisone) - Are they supposed to make you feel weak? I was prescribed a pack of steroids to break a migraine cluster. Please no judgment, this has happened before and worked on my migraines. I am on my second day and feeling very weak. Aren't they supposed to give you energy instead?
sokokl replied: "Yes, sometimes fatigue can be a side effect of being on steroids for some people for a short time. However, I would recommend checking with your doctor again as well to see what they say."
fiorcet (Fiorinal® (butalbital, aspirin, caffeine)*+ prednisone interaction? my dr perscribed me fiorinal because of migraines. i just came off prednisone 2 days ago and i was reading on drug interactions to not take fiorinal with prednisone. WELL TOO LATE I ALREADY DID! i am scared the drugs will interact. why did my dr perscribe both to me. does he know about this?
Kate from Drugs.com replied: "Prednisone and butalbital (one of the ingredients of Fiorcet) have a moderate drug-drug interaction. Butalbital may decrease the levels of prednisone in your blood, thereby making prednisone less effective.
The fact that you are no longer taking prednisone means that this is not a problem in your case"
I am taking prednisone 60mg once a day for over 100 flea bites and i have had a horrible headache since this? I have had it since this afternoon. Is this a side effect of this mediation and should i continue to take it? My dr. said to take it for 5 days for the itching, it has helped the itching but now i feel like i have the worst migraine of my life!! I don't know which is worse the itching or feeling like my head is being crushed and my eyes are killing me with blurry vision and dizziness!
Jill S replied: "This is a common side effect of prednisone. You should call your physician and ask him or her to prescribe an alternative steroid (like Medrol). This is usually as effective and has a better side effect profile."
TAMMY S replied: "oh i feel so sorry for you have you told your doctor about that you should and if it gets worst go to the hospital it could be serious"
Scamper replied: "Tell. Your. Doctor."
Catfishchic replied: "I don't have a answer for ya, but Wow! How did you get so many flea bites? Maybe you should call the doctor's office or even the ER nurse and ask them what you should do? Better to safe than sorry. Good luck."
Marmi replied: "I would call your Dr. immediately to report on the side effects. Prednisone is a wonderful drug for many things but its side effects can be terrible. You should be on a reducing dosage as you go through the 5 days. That will help your headache because there will be less of it in your system. You must have had a pretty severe reaction for this med. treatment. DO NOT DISCONTINUE without slowly decreasing. You think your headache is bad. Prednisone requires tapering off. Side effects can also include stomach upset, constipation...but it does the job it is prescribed to do...with a little extra.
Good luck. Drink lots of water. Stay in a cool place and sleep, if you can afford to."
Niinnaa replied: "Yuck!!!! sounds very itchy. Discontinue the medicine and try Aveeno Oatmeal Body Wash and also get the Oatmeal Powder Milk Bath also by Aveeno. The work wonders and pop a couple of Benadryls You'll be fine.
But my daughter was taking tht same medication for croup.
Time for some research!!!!"
Anna replied: "Medrol is the same thing as prednisone actually. Do not stop taking it withouth your physicians permission. Steroids should be tapered off and not stopped cold turkey,"
Birth control and prednisone? I recently changed from Yasmin to Yaz. Because I have bad allergies, I was put on prednisone. Well this week (two days before I started) I got an evil migraine here at work and it has lasted for 4 days. Can the steroid cause that with the birth control? Or is it maybe the birth control switch was it? I am miserable. I go to the GYNO doctor Tuesday and could use some help. I am taking migraine medication (Axert) daily just to keep them at bay. My head still feels really sore and sensitive and feels like it could erupt at any time. PLEASE HELP!
The last day for the prednisone was two days ago I dont know if that is the exact reason but it has got to be something. I am contemplating just getting off the birth control and getting a sponge or diaphram. It has got to be either the bc or the steroid.
squishie bug replied: "Should be OK - I am on Prednisone and Yasmin at the same time as well. In fact, all my doctors encouraged it."
Jellybean replied: "I've been taking prednisone for over 15 years and the doctor told me I can't use birth control pills because of blot clots. I know you've only been taking prednisone for a couple of days but does your dr. know you changed from Yasmin to Yaz? does the dr. even know you're on birth control? If you are really feeling horrible (like you're having a bad reaction) go to the ER instead of waiting until Tuesday. Feel better!"
Q replied: "OK, we have a complicated situation here.
1)First of all there's the Prednisone. It's a steroid anti-inflammatory. As such, it's actually really difficult to get a migraine on it--the antiinflammatories are so powerful that the inflammation of migraine just doesn't start. In fact, at my migraine clinic, they will often put people on a "steroid taper" to get them out of a bad cycle of constant or daily migraine. So I would think it's NOT the Prednisone.
2) Switch from Yasmin to Yaz: The difference between the two pills is that Yaz gives you less estrogen than Yasmin (.02mg estradiol vs .03mg estradiol), and it has 3 more days of active pills than Yasmin, too. Progestin is the same (drospirenone). Migraines are highly affected by a woman's cycle. Low estrogen in particular can give you migraines (I know because I went through this myself, but there are also a lot of studies). This is why a lot of women get migraines during the week they don't take active pills, when they're using oral contraceptives. So is the lower dose of the estrogen in the one pill affecting you? Possibly. It's hard to say without some experimentation. But since it began, if I am understanding you correctly, two days before you started the Yaz for the first time, it seems highly unlikely. You would have been on your off week of Yasmin, I assume, when the migraine started? If so, then that's perfect timing for a menstrally related migraine--you were at your lowest point of estrogen. So in other words, while it's possible that the switch from Yasmin to Yaz could do this kind of thing, it's pretty unlikely in this particular instance. Unless I misunderstood you, and you switched in the middle of a pack from Yasmin to Yaz. The sudden estrogen drop could cause a migraine.
3) Axert: you're taking it daily. Bad bad bad bad!!! In my opinion, this is the likeliest reason why you've been getting daily migraines. You shouldn't take Axert two days in a row. Same goes for other migraine treatments. The problem is that you will often get a "bounce-back" migraine if you take the meds too often, and you'll get into this nighmarish cycle of daily migraines. I've been there, too. :-( Different neurologists will have different recommendations of how often you can take migraine meds, but I think in general, I wouldn't take them more than two times per week.
My recommendation: go cold turkey off the Axert. I know it's agony, but it's the only way to do it, and while the BCP switch may or may not have cause the migraine, it's the Axert that's perpetuating it. Hopefully, the Prednisone will prevent too much of a reaction on the part of your body. Go back to Yasmin for another month or two, until you're away from this cycle of pain. If that's feasable--I don't know what kind of problems you were having with Yasmin. But when I start having cycles of migraines, I retrench to familiar things for a little while. I don't think your gyn will know much at all about migraines--it's my experience that gyns know little about treating migraines, and neurologists know little about hormonal effects on migraines. Alas! Anyway, take care of yourself. I'm so sorry you have to go through this!"
4 week migraine? Please help me make it stop!? Here's a little background:
I have been struggling with anxiety and depression for a large portion of my life. I was taking effexor, but found the side effects extreme and couldn't handle it. After several years on this medication I tapered myself off and went cold turkey on no meds thinking the depression had passed. Months later it returned. I am now taking Lexapro (for about 2 weeks) and it seems to be helping with less side effects.
For the last 4 weeks I have been having severe headaches that will not quit. I have been to the ER twice and they ran CT and MRI and found nothing that would cause these and saw my doctor who gave me some drugs that seemed to help for awhile, but didn't make them go away. I have recently been to a neurologist who diagnosed them as migraines and pretty much eliminated cluster and tension headaches based on my responses to some questions. He has put me on a tapered string of prednisone and gave me a few other drugs besides, but stated that most migraines only last 24-72 hours.
My question would be - does anyone out there have experience with migraines lasting this long? It is making my life and in turn my family's life very difficult and is tearing us all apart. Does anyone have any advice or suggestions or other opinions as to what this is? Please I need relief! Anybody?!
I don't have any money for expensive treatment like massage or chiropractory
Dr. Patrick V. Suglia replied: "Usually they do last this long if you haven't been to a chiropractor."
HALLOWEEN81 replied: "ask your doctor for some lortab 10 mg med it works great for migranes."
MommyOf2 replied: "I had one that lasted 3 weeks and ended because I passed out from the pain and my husband took me to the hospital. I was unable to stand or even open my eyes because of the pain. After an IV full of pain meds in the ER that did nothing, the only thing that worked was Tordol (I'm not sure of the spelling on this med, sorry). The migraine would return when the Tordol wore off and the ER doctor finally gave me a prescription for the pill form of Tordol, which is very expensive and wasn't covered by my insurance but very much worth every penny. If your insurance won't cover the pill form, you should have the option to go to your doctor for a daily injection until the migraine is over and MOST doctors will not charge you a co-pay just for an injection"
Do I have a good chance to get disability for Migraines? I've had them since 1993 and now I can't work at all. I tried going down to part-time, and couldn't do it. I've had FMLA filled out for 6 years, also, I've been through pain management, neurologists, neurosurgeons, and tried many different medications. Prednisone helped for a week, then all I did was eat and gained 8 pounds. Triptans do not help, and I have severe side effects. I can only take pain pills and I take Xanax. I have had a history of anxiety attacks also.
Spirit Girl replied: "Ask your doctor about Topamax. They just released it as an approved medicine to help with migraines. It does have a side effect though that a lot of women who take it lose weight."
legalchick791 replied: "Nice to know you're one of the many thousands of people that I'm supporting with my tax dollars...give me a break."
viper_chic_24 replied: "No, migraines is one of the things that wouldn't help u get disability......about 85% of the u.s. has them......sorry."
cincykt replied: "Have you tried any alternative treatments? I know a girl that would migraines so bad that she would become unconscious! She started using some Nikken products, and she stopped having problems! I know she used their magnetic necklace (very pretty- just a gold chain), and I think she later started using their sleep system and Optimized water. Let me know if you'd like more info. Good luck!"
