Prednisone For Acute Back Pain Information in Q&A
What can you tell me about the Management of acute Polymyalgia with Prednisone induced Cushing's Syndrome ? I've had very bad Polymyalgia for a couple of years. I was only diagnosed a year ago. I was placed on Prednisone and the dose was gradually increased to 10mg a day. The pain and stiffness were still quite bad. They introduced Methotrexate 20mg once a week with the necessary follow-up calcium folinate the following day. The pain is still present but bearable. The Cushing's Syndrome is terrible, my face and neck are so swollen and red, I look like Santa Claus, and my ENT specialist says my trachea is collapsing from the pressure. I've been very careful not to put on too much weight with it, but the swelling is another matter. I'm so self-conscious that I've cut off personal contact with my friends, stopped going out unless I have to, I just stay alone because I'm so ashamed of how strange I look. I'm just feeling like this will never end.I know that the Cushing's is the trade-off for the pain. I'm feeling pretty desperate. Thank you Empress Jan, You are right, and you're wrong. The cause of mine is definitely huge doses of prednisone.. no tumour!

Empress Jan replied: "Cushing's is caused by a pituitary tumor (adenoma) and you need to see an endocrinologist. The tumor is causing the pit to give false hormones to the rest of the body, including weight gain (I know, went through this!). I had my tumor removed and the hump went away, but still had the weight gain. I eventually went on Topiramate for the weight (under dr. care), but I also had high choloestrol too (which caused fatty liver). So far that is working, but it's a slow weight loss, but it's working. My joints are not hurting any more; my migraines are minimal...you need to see doctor again. I believe the Prednisone is doing you more harm than good and do not take hormones!"

lower right back pain? I have had a CT scan-clear,x-ray-clear, kub-clear, urine-clear 4 times and an mri which showed a milid protrusion into the anterior thecal sacat the L5,S1 but that has been deemed normal for a 33 year old male. I have had pain before, but this is unique. It actually disappeared for 3-4 days last week then came back yesterday with a vengeance. It usually is worse in the morning when I first awake and is accompanied by stomach cramps (perhaps I sleep fetal style).Anyway I have seen an internal medicine, urologist, etc. they say its skelatal muscular. Is there ANYTHING those scans may have missed? I am I jusr paranoid and it is simply acute lower right back pain? Just need a 2nd,3rd,4th...opinion. Thanks...this has been ongoing for a month and after the prednisone and other pain meds gave me constipation I am wary of returning to drugs for help. My doc agrees.

ihateinternetdating replied: "No more pills! Off to the acupressure specialist you go, my man, find a great Oriental massuse that will put you in tears when they're working on you but after 3 or 4 treatments you'll be good as new! :)"

Garacaius replied: "Yes, I would go with what your doctor says. I was thinking kidney or gall bladder. But with the scans and surely blood tests you have had those should be ruled out."

Blues Man replied: "You need a MRI. Sounds like stones. Has it ever hurt when you wiz? & blood test & you wold think x-rays I would think about an MRI. Anything to do with just Ur back isn't going to make you sick. I got all of my disc are rupture & I don't get sick in the morning, How many medical opinions have you had? More than just this 1 I hope. Yes than can miss things. Good luck, you might try a Google search & you might find out what it is. There are so many sites for every thing. Hope I helped or gave you something to think about."

fisherwoman replied: "Sounds like you are getting older and the discs between the vertabrae are getting thinner. There really isn't a clear way to relieve the pain, I would not take the Prednisone again. Physical therapy can help for awhile, chriopractor can help for awhile, rest and massage helps for awhile, see the cycle? I've had back and neck problems for more than fifteen years,I did all the conventional stuff I could, went alternative helped some. Any thing going to fix it? No. Sorry, try to treat your back as well as you can, over time you may need surgery, but then who knows for sure if that will fix it. Good luck."

Chest Pain with Prednisone? I was diagnosed with ALL (acute lymphoblastic lekemia) about 13 months ago and in maintenance. I take prednisone the first 5 days of every month. I take 20 mg pills 3 times a day, a total of 60 mg a day. I get very severe chest pains starting at about the second day of the pills. I also get other bone pains and aches all over my body. I take Tylenol 3 and it helps, but I would like to get rid of the pain alltogether. Any help and suggestions will help a lot.

sokokl replied: "Could be a reaction to the prednisone itself, but I would recommend getting in touch with your doctor to let them know what's going on so that they can evaluate the situation further to see what else could be going on."
