What kinda of problems can you have from drinking alcohol when taking Paxil? My boyfriend is a heavy drinker and he is on Paxil for his Bipolar tendencies... I try and tell him that it is not a good idea to drink while on meds like that but I dont have cold hard facts to back my suggestions... anything will help ... Thanks

tony replied: "I would not drink"

stillstanding replied: "Death. Get him to stop mixing the beer and medications now, before it is too late. I have heard on my local news several times about teens or young adults on medications who went out drinking only one night and died when they came home or in their sleep that night. This is sort of insidious suggestion, but for real, take away either the beer or the pills (preferably both), whichever is easiest to take, and don't give them or it back until he honestly promises to avoid the alcohol. God bless you."

Jack replied: "1) If one drinks while taking these kinds of meds, it raises the blood alcohol level. If he's a heavy drinker, he may not mind that, since it will help him to get drunk faster. If he drives, the police MAY mind it a great deal. 2) More imortantly, drinking will cause the medicine NOT TO WORK. He's wasting his time with the Paxil if he is also drinking. [NOTE: Contrary to the conventional wisdom, mixing a med such as Paxil with alcohol does not usually end in death or a coma.] Love Jack"

gmonte33 replied: "Never drink on Paxil. Several years ago I was taking it. Normally I can hold my alcohol well. But even a few drinks on Paxil made me really loopy and wacky. One night my ex-bf and I went out and I got pretty drunk. We got in a fight, as usual, and I flipped out and took about 15 Paxils. I ended up in the hospital having to drink this horrible activated charcoal. I never would have done that if I was only on booze. The combination flips you out."

ebigstanks replied: "There should be some information on the label of the prescription. For the most part, alcohol and anti-depressants counter-act each other making the Paxil pretty much ineffective. There's a low chance of death mixing alcohol and anti-depressants, but mainly it will just end in the Paxil not working and your boyfriend's symptoms will go untreated."

Random Bloke replied: "First up, if he's bipolar, then paxil is an odd drug for him to be on. Second, it's generally a dumb idea to mix psychiatric meds with booze. Thirdly, paxil is strange and picky. If you keep stopping abnd starting it, it becomes progressively less effective."

What are the side effects of mixing paxil with alcohol? I know someone who has recently been prescribed the anti depressant paxil. What are potential side effects of taking paxil and drinking alcohol?

Autumn Storm replied: "It depends on the person, and how much you drink!! I would say no more than 3 drinks when on that stuff!!"

midnightoker replied: "potential death"

pr0ph3t1cl1v1ty replied: "Paxil + alcohol = disaster. I knew a guy a while back who was on Paxil for depression. He drank a bunch of beers and got set off because George Carlin was on the TV & a friend of his who had died years before was a big George Carlin fan. The guy started screaming, bawling, then ran outside, got in his truck and very recklessly drove off. His wife was frantic & asked me to go after him. So I got in my car & followed him, trying to get him to stop. He then tried to get into an accident with me by trying to get me to rear-end him, and then actually tried to run me off the road. At that point, I said screw it, he's on his own. He came back home a while later and was still very violently emotional. Paxil & alcohol definitely don't mix, but my real opinion is that Paxil is no good, period."

jocelyn replied: "If some one is taking an anti depressant of any kind they should not be drinking alcohol on top. You do one or the other, drink and drown yr sorrows, or take the medication and hope that works. I think if yr friend is drinking on top of the anti-deppressants then they are obviously not working. Most of them don't. If they was working then yr friend woudn't feel the need to use alcohol on top would he? Tell your friend to go back to the doctor. I think he needs some councerling to help him come to terms with why he feels so deppressed. There is always a reason. Nothing happens without a reason. If he can get to the bottom of that then he will feel better in general. Things are never quite as bad as we think they are. Wish yr friend good luck."

Amy W replied: "Don't do it! I just discovered this in the last few weeks. I am stopping the paxil, only after a few drinks I would black out and not remember hours on end. Even just one drink would make me loopy. Also watch becuase it makes you crave the alcohol more- I could drink it like water. Just do no do it!"

Paxil..??? drinking alcohol? does anyone drink while taking Paxil???? And the effects Please/Thank You Take 10mg for panic attacks I had. Take 10mg for panic attacks I had.

mlmar625 replied: "Everyone reacts differently to alcohol plus antidepressants. I have been on various antidepressants for years and have only had one bad experience with alcohol, but it was awful - I vomited for 12 hours. It is best to avoid mixing the two. Failing that, start slow and see how it goes. Do 1/2 a drink and wait 24 hours to see how you did. Then slowly increase to a reasonable level, but never over-consume alcohol when on meds. Good luck - sorry you are depressed. :-("

boss replied: "it is not a good idea to mix alchol withyour medication but if you choose to drink slow because the paxil will icrease the intensity of the alchol"

Daniel replied: "I agree with the first two people maybe this will be of some more help to you. "

What happens when you are on paxil and drink alcohol? I've recently had some VERY bad experiences. Passed out in odd places and became belligerent, blacking out. This is very atypical. This is after drinking too much, but not enough that it would usually cause this kind of reaction. I may have a not drink at all. I know people aren't supposed to drink on the drug. But it's not always that easy when there are special occasions and such, like New Years and Halloween when everyone is out partying. I want to have a social life and everyone I hang out with drinks on those occasions. I don't have much choice I guess. But what's done is done, are there long-term consequences for my body/mind?

blondie replied: "most all medications, especially antidepressants are NOT to be taking if you consume alcohol. wouldnt passing out and blacking out and not remembering parts of your night scare you enough not to do it again?"

Bo-Dean replied: "Anti-deppresents and alcohol are a very bad idea and paxil is one of the worst. Switching to Lexapro or Zoloft might be a good idea, but you should still not drink while taking them. The only exception to this rule would be if you have a drink before bedtime, but it's still not advised."

Nicole replied: "No long-term consequences have been discovered YET, but you don't want to be the first, do you?? Go out, have fun, have a drink, but know your limit. It sounds like your limit is much lower on Paxil."

Kathy replied: "you have to be very careful taking any antidepressants and drinking , it slows your heart rate and you could die."

What happens when one drinks alcohol on Paxil? I have been on Paxil for about 6 months and noticed on the package that it says not to drink alcohol while taking it

Ashley replied: "When I was taking Paxil and drank it made me incredibly sleepy."

Nimbus replied: "When did you notice that? If it was six months ago and you've been on the juice then I reckon it's OK. If you are just now contemplating drinking while Paxilated then I'd say - DON'T."

Az R replied: "There's research showing that as little as one drink of alcohol per week drastically reduces the success rate of antidepressant therapy. While mixing alcohol and antidepressants does not have the spectacularly fatal results of mixing alcohol and benzodiazepines, it can be quite unpleasant, and should generally be avoided."

How dangerous is it to Drink alcohol while taking Paxil? I'm currently been on Paxil for a month now and I haven't done any drinking but now that i am feeling better i'd like to. But on the label it says comsumption of alcohol can make you very drowsie and other things.. What i want to know is it particulary dangerous or not??

Laura J replied: "here you go"

happydog replied: "Yes, it can be quite dangerous. I saw a friend of mine who was on Paxil take one small glass of wine, and then come close to passing out cold. I wouldn't mess with it if I were you."

pshdsa replied: "If you don't want to be drowsy and "other things" then don't. Plain and simple."

Danny F replied: "I took paxil for five years and I drank all the time. And i'm not just drinking one bear I used to get hammered and nothing happen to me except a little hang over. Also I think paxil does more harm then good I had trouble sleeping, not able to think straight, suicidal thoughts and it's hard to get off the medicine you have to stop taking it gradually. Yeah it took me forever to get off that medicine. Honey there are way more medicines out there that you can take. There is lexipro which is a little better. That's what i'm told. Discuss different options with your shrink P.S I hope you feel better."

DepressionAwareness replied: "Alcohol usually intensifies the effects of any medication. Yes, some people can take medications and drink alcohol, and be fine. Are you willing to take that risk, though? Everyone's body reacts differently to medications. I'm sure there's a label on your prescription bottle that says "do not drink alcoholic beverages while taking this medication." It's there for a reason. In my opinion, I would not drink alcohol while taking the medication."

Paxil CR 25mg and drinking alcohol? I was on Paxil 20mg and have switched to Paxil CR 25mg; I take it in the morning. I drank alcohol with regular Paxil and was fine, is anyone on Paxil CR and what was your reaction to it with alcohol?

Shu replied: "You should never drink while taking meds. Just because you didn't notice any change doesn't mean that your body is not reacting in a bad way to it."

gangadharan_nair replied: "Ask your doctor about the safe use of alcoholic beverages while you are taking paroxetine. Please see the web pages for more details on Paroxetine."

rachybear89 replied: "BIG NO-NO. Alcohol can increase the side effects. Most medications requiring a prescription from a doctor should come with a warning sticker on the bottle telling you that alcohol has the ability to react with the medication, and you should not drink."

Will drinking alcohol while on paxil make you crazy??!! help!!? Ok so the last few days I've been drinking quite a bit on the medicine paxil. Have had time gaps where I don't even remember anything. I went onto face book and wrote a ton of really crazy sh*t and have absolutely no memory of it. My dreams have also become so vivid that its hard to tell them apart from reality. I don't know what has been real and what hasn't. I've also been seeing small hallucinations like a line moving across the sky and stuff. Is this a fairly normal reaction to drinking on paxil?

O U812 replied: "aren't you already considered crazy if ur on paxil?"

David replied: "Here is the answer to your question"

psyberb replied: "Patients are warned not to drink while taking antidepressants. Other possibilities: 1) You are not tolerating this medication well. How long have you been taking it? Any previous problems? 2) Excessive drinking can make you "crazy" whether or not you are taking medication. Take care. :)"

james_james03 replied: "Well, stop drinking and see if it makes a difference... quite simple really."

spiffer1 replied: "You should take the question to the one who prescribed the medication in the first place. One of the first questions they should have asked you before prescribing is how much and how often do you imbibe alcoholic beverages. Paxil among other things works as a relaxant. Alcohol is among other things a depressant. In combination you will induce among other things periods of lack of consciousness and conscious behaviour."

Cesaria Barbarossa replied: "Why would you drink on meds? It's common sense that you're not supposed to. Either you (a) want to continue to party and, therefore, need to stop taking Paxil or (b) you want to be in a better mental state and will cut out the alcohol (which does nothing good for depressed people to begin with) and continue your medication. You have to grow up."

Michele replied: "It is very dangerous to drink with antidepressants. You might want to call your Dr, and tell them this."

Kathryn L replied: "Sometimes people are warned to avoid alcohol while taking Paxil® (paroxetine hydrochloride). This is because alcohol and medicines like Paxil act upon similar chemicals in the brain. So the concern is that Paxil will increase the effects of alcohol -- whether this is increasing symptoms of depression or affecting motor skills. When healthcare providers are asked whether it is okay to drink alcohol while taking Paxil, they generally recommend that if people choose to drink, they drink only light to moderate amounts, and only after they understand the effects that Paxil and other medicines they are taking have on their body."

Persephone replied: "antidepressants and alcohol *do not mix*. i cant stress that enough. you could overdose, have seizures, and god knows what else."

Bri replied: "well i mean i dont think it will make you crazy. One time i took pills just for the hell of it, But you should be careful because i mean you might overdose! But if your scared then maybe drink when your not on the meds. Good luck, ps. i had the weirdest dream last night! your not the only one"

Can you drink alcohol while taking Paxil? I was just prescribed Paxil today for depression and the doctor told me not to drink alcohol with it because it will make me sick. Has anyone else been told this?

ƒ l ð ¥ Ð replied: "You should absolutely NEVER drink alcohol with prescription anti-depressants. If you do, it will make your life terrible, even worse, there is a chance of even worse effects such as death or uncontrollable suicidal activity (until you eventually kill yourself). Just listen to the doctor, I don't think you want to make this any worse."

Simon D replied: "You can drink with most anti depressants the first guy who answered is just a moron. Its simply not advised its not going to kill you. Alcohol is a depressant, i drink whilst taking lexapro i dont drink as much but its perfectly safe. drink less than you normally would its alot easier to get to your "limit" and throw up etc."
