Are there any withdrawal side effects from coming off antipychotics like olanzapine? What are your experiences?

Mahadelic replied: "Coming off olanzapine was one of the worst experiences of my life. I was starting to develop diabetes, so I really had no other option. In all, it lasted for six months. I've gone cold turkey from venlafaxine 375mg/day, but nothing compared to this. I've never felt the same since."

Professor Armitage replied: "That is zyprexa, isn't it? I take 15 mg once a night for about 6 years now but never tried to not take it without doctors advice. The few times I forgot to take it I could not sleep. So my answer is you will not be able to sleep. But then I realized my mistake and called out sick to work and took my medication. I changed my name, I was Tchaikovsky, and several others but you know me because I answered your question about feeling guilty about being off work and have it in the watchlist."

What is Risperidone assigned for exactly? And what are the expected side effects? Yesterday, I saw my Doctor and I told him some of my symptoms from the last few weeks and days (insomnia and lack of eating, voices, thought withdrawl, etc). I am being sent to see a psychiatrist in 6-10 weeks, which isn't very long wait. I've been on Zyprexa (Olanzapine) and Celexa (Citalopram) before. Celexa was 20 Mg's and the Zyprexa was 10Mg's. The Risperidone is only 0.5Mg's for now, taken every ten hours, making it 10 Mg's a day, I guess? (6am/6pm type thing) I have long family history of serious mental illness, and I had problems at birth (premature birth due to mothers severely infected placenta, born at 20.5 weeks according to Vancouver Children's Hospital, weighted 1 pound 4 ounces and was on 100% oxygen for 6 months and for a few months until the age of 2 or 3) and my doctor and my mental health worker and mental health nurse, all think I have psychosis. I am not surprised by this at all, in fact am relieved to be getting help if that is the case. However what are the side of effect of Risperidone? (I had a wacky dream about taking it and getting messed up alien eyes lol) And what Risperidone normally given out for? Thank you very much for helping me out, I truly appreciate it. In about a week, my dosage goes up. To how much I don't know.

LizzieBeth replied: "Risperdol is an antipsychotic. If you're hallucinating, that's why you're on it. That link will give you way more info than anyone needs. I was on it before. Wasn't for me. I hope it works for you. Good luck."

Pick A Winner replied: "Risperidone is most commonly used for psychosis and OCD. I take 6mg per day for psychosis and it is the best drug I have ever taken. I didn't have any side effects whatsoever. .5 twice a day is a pretty small dose so if it doesn't work your doctor has a lot of room to increase it. Hope it works for you."

flight_of_the_thestrals627 replied: "Risperidone is used for the treatment of psychotic disorders, for example, schizophrenia. It also is used in combination with lithium or valproate for the treatment of acute manic or mixed episodes associated with bipolar I disorder. Side effects can be sudden, often jerky, involuntary motions of the head, neck, arms, body, or eyes, dizziness, hyperactivity, tiredness, and nausea. When you first start taking it (the first week or so), it can cause low blood pressure, which can cause hallucinations."

Sony replied: "Resperidone makes you gain weight."

Kryswalker replied: "Risperidone should really help with your auditory hallucinations. It's generally used to treat bipolar disorder/manic-depression, schizophrenia, Tourette's syndrome, and autism. From your symptoms -- especially hearing voices--your docs may have diagnosed some degree of schizophrenia. Some useful information can be found here: I hope you feel better soon!"

Olanzapine....anyone tried it? My doctor has just taken me off carbamazapine and prescribed Olanzapine, but the side effects are weight gain, has anyone experience this, please help x

xxsunpyrexx replied: "ok the side effects are of increased appetitie and weight gain YES but if you choose to eat healthy options rather than reaching for junk options you should be fine. I have seen many people use olanzapine and this is what I recommend."

kaliluna replied: "Zyprexa works very well and is fast acting, although does carry the weight gain side effects. I take it as a PRN (as needed) and took it every day for at least a week (it was a year ago). It changed the way my body metabolized food and within a month I had gained 20 pounds, which I have yet been able to lose. I take it maybe once every 3 months now, only if I'm super bad and need something immediately. If you have concerns about the weight gain, you need to talk to your doctor. There are other mood stabilizers that work well and don't cause the same weight gain (specifically Lamictal, which is what I take)."

skanktale replied: "I have used it. It is fast acting I used it for Schizophrenia. It causes severe weight gain in some people while other people on it only gain a few pounds. Eli Lilly settled a clash action lawsuit against Zyprexa (Olanzapine). It would seem it gave 29,000 people in the U.S.A. diabetes."
