Can you please compare the effectivness of Nexium, Prevacid, and Protonix? Because of a new insurer, I can't take Nexium and Prevacid anymore. I'm scared to death that Protonix won't work. What can you tell me about Protonix compared to the other two. Nexium and Prevacid both worked fine on me.

namairb2 replied: "They are all the same, just different manufacturer's and prices. I used to take Protonix too and it worked just fine. Then after being ill from a different disorder and needing to go to an in patient facility for physical rehab. they used Prilosec, so they switched me to that. My doctor then gave me the prescription strength as I have insurance for them and it doesn't cover any OTC medication like the regular strength. So, relax, stress can only add to the problem. The Prontonix does the same job as any of them do. Good luck and God Bless"

Whats the diffrence in prevacid and nexium? just finished my prev pac for h-pylori. I still have ulcers my doc prescribed me prevacid but there was some conflict between the pharmacey and my insurance so they gave me nexium is this still effective for ulcers or not as good for them.

ranishwaura_md replied: "Both drugs are Proton Pump inhibitors (PPIs). - Prevacid is lansoprazole & nexium is esomeprazole. - Both the drugs are similar in efficacy (i.e. effectiveness) as well as side effects (generally well tolerated though). - so, either of them should be fine for treatment of peptic ulcer(s) in your case."

Pangolin replied: "As the person above stated, they are similar drugs in the same class. Different people respond differently to the various drugs. One might cause side effects for you, but not for me. One might work better for me and not at all for you. That's one of the reasons that there are several drugs to treat the same problem. Don't you just love it when your insurance company gets to dictate what drug you get? In your case it shouldn't matter - both drugs work well for most people."

Have any of you taken Nexium or Prevacid for acid reflux while you were pregnant? It's a category B drug which means it is generally safe in pregnancy but would you take it? And i'm not talking about minor heartburn i mean severe, wanna-die, moaning in pain on the floor, battery acid burning your insides kind of heartburn. That's the kind of heartburn I get if I don't take my medicine. I'm not pregnant but I am thinking about the future and I want your input please. I appreciate it.

Ethel replied: "I took Pepcid, which works in a similar manner to shut down the acid channels in the stomach, he's fine and very healthy."

Becca replied: "Actually yes I have because I have severe digestive issues even when not expecting. With each pregnancy since having my gallbladder removed I throw up the entire time and have severe stomach pain. My doctor prescribed Prevacid and I toke that up until they discovered I was allergic to it. Now they have me on Zantac for it and that seams to work well in helping me keep food down. Trust me i understand not wanting to take something but if its severe enough to where you cant hold food down that not good for a baby ether. That's why I decided to go ahead and take it so I could have the vitamins the baby so vitally needs. Just so you know my 11 month old was born perfectly healthy after taking these during pregnancy as well. If your doctor prescribed it then they have taken in to account the risks and I think you will be safe. Good luck and hope this helps."

**My LiL mAn Is DuE iN 7 wEeKS** replied: "Im pregnant and the doctor gave it to me because I get a weird gas during the night while I cry and cry,so she gave me prevacid, but im not taking it.(and im not talking about normal gas it's weird, its just a sharp pain that goes all over my body! and they saidd it was gas!)"

How quickly can you feel the effects of products like Prevacid and Nexium on stomach pain? Do they provide for any immediate relief, and if not, how many days before they start to have a noticeable effect?

dymond replied: "Depends on how bad the problem is-1 -14 days , for me it took 7 days to get any relief, from prevacid."

Do some people use prescription strength Prevacid ot Prilosec, or Nexium for years or just temporarily? I am 33. I have GERD. For the last three years I have had to take prescription strength Nexium. My doctor told me to get an endoscpoy but I just can't fathom the thought of someone sticking a tube down my throat. It sounds grotesque. I can't believe that's the only way they can test for stomach problems. Anyways, it is alright that I take Nexium permanently? Do any other patients do this?

Sunny replied: "When you have an endoscopy, you are out.....they give you Verced, which knocks you out (partially, as you are rousable). Go for the endoscopy to find out of esophageal rings are affected, if erosion of esophagus has occurred, or if there is a visual reason for the reflux. You won't even be aware nor remember the procedure and something may be found........good or not so good!"

Lea replied: "There are people who take Nexium, Prilosec, etc for years without any major problems. If you have severe GERD, they do recommend you have an endoscopy performed. They will numb your throat when they do it."

Do anti biotics work well with drugs like prevacid or nexium? I am currently taking prevacid and need antibiotics how with this turn out for me? can i mix them no problem?

neuron finder replied: "Need to ask your doc or pharmacist. there are specific recommendations and/or counter-indications with specific antibiotics."

Shari replied: "Yes you can. My husband takes the prevacid and has had antibiotics with it. Nothing serious, don't worry."

Tigger replied: "It depends on the antibiotic in question. Ask the doctor about it. Good luck!"

Which proton pump acid inhibitor (Nexium, Prevacid, etc.) do you think is the best? anyone tried Rabeprazole? found out my insurance doesn't pay for Nexium, but may others, anybody have that problem with their insurance? why u think the reason? I always get in a battle with them for paying for Viagra (10-20 $/ pill) like Medicare was paying but not for other drugs, politicians felt even though age in 70's and 80's very important drug Viagra, shows what our gov officials spend a lot of time doing on our salary with our money or if someone had liver disease, which least effects?

bernstein229 replied: "Try prevecid if you have the money, allthough if your doctor has free samples get as much as you can."

double_klicks replied: "Nexium is the best I've tried. Have you tried Prilosec? It's Over-the-counter and works quite well. Ask your doctor for a close generic to Nexium. The insurance companies most always will cover the generic scripts. If it involves the male of our species nothing is too good or expensive for them. WHY? Because most of our government is run by a bunch a OLD, FAT MALE B- - - - - -s that should have retired years ago and had to live on Medicare"

spoiler121 replied: "For the most part they are interchangable. Each company has data to show their product is "superior" but for the vast majority of cases, the efficacy is similar. Rabepazole (Pariet) may be slightly faster in terms of onset, but if your taking it for a prolonged period, it doesn't matter. Finally - omeprazole - the "original" still works very well for most people and is probably less expensive than the others."

First L replied: "all the proton pump inhibitors should be equivalent. Omeprazole (Prilosec) does come in generic and is probably covered by your insurance. It is the only PPI that is generic at the time."

Ken C replied: "The good news is that most proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) are about the same in terms of efficacy if you take an equivalent dose. I personally don't have any experience with rabeprazole (Aciphex), but would have no reason to suspect it to be any less effective. As for the reason for insurance formularies, it's all about the money. If an insurer signs an exclusive contract with a certain drug maker, they can demand a lower price."

Any medication for gall bladder disease. Has tried nexium, prilosec, and prevacid.? My friends husband is having severe abdomanol pain went and had a ulta sound and found nothing. Any recomondations to what it could be?

fatbeagle replied: "removal of gall bladder. Further GI test"

Lady B replied: "It could be stomach or small or large bowel disease. He should see a gastroenterologist so they can do tests and make recommendations."

Over-the-counter Prevacid/Nexium-type medicine? My doctor had me taking Prevacid for about 3 months, and told me that if the symptoms I was taking it for recurred, to try an over-the-counter medicine that had the same type of effect - but for the life of me, I can't remember the name of it. Any ideas?

S P replied: "Prilosec, tagament, or zantac."

Icarus replied: "Prilosec"

luvzkatz wants Y!A fixed! replied: "Zantac, Tagamet and Prilosec are OTC. Nexium and Prevacid are prescription only."

aceofspd replied: "Prilosec OTC is what you are looking for. Zantac, Pepcid, and Tagamet are to reduce acid but do not work by the same mechanism. They are cheaper, however. Some alternative doctors, believe that many stomach problems are from too little stomach acid and taking acid lowering drugs will always lead to chronic use. Not sure what was the actual cause of my own escape from this problem because I changed many things all at one time. I stopped taking 10 different prescriptions and changed to a whole foods type diet. Good luck"
