What is a safe and effective way to help with nasal congestion? I have had allergies all my life. Due to financial problems, I cannot buy medicines from the pharmacy, OTC and prescription. I have tried Afrin, bad results. I was on Flonase, wonderful results. I have a few pills left of 3 year old Zyrtec-D which I think it quite weak because it is not having that much effect on me anymore. I am a sufferer of allergies. When they rated my dust allergy from 1(being the lowest) and 10(being the highest), my level was about a 9.6...yeah, that bad. Now, I was on allergy shots for about 3 years then I could stop because it was over. Then I moved to a new location and my dust allergy has returned with a few different pollen allergies. Most of the time, it is just the nose, stuffy, congested to the extreme, very painful pressure and no sleep. I cannot sleep when my nose is stuffy. So with that I suffer from insomia as well. Help me please...I need real answers and not just go to the doctor because that is not an option!

MissWong replied: "Have you tried a neti pot? They're a godsend for those of us with terrible allergies. They rinse out all the allergens and remove the mucous without any side effects and you can use them whenever you like. No prescription needed and you can add medications if you like. "

Dana replied: "Some people swear by wasabi (that green paste that comes with sushi) as a sort of 'desperation nuke' for congestion. It's really spicy, but that's the point. As for sleeping, you can try propping yourself up with pillows to help drainage. Then there's what I have: the equivalent of two 2x4s laid under the headboard of my bed. Slants the whole bed a little so I don't have to hurt my neck trying to sleep sitting up. Drink hot fluids, that warmth will loosen up the junk in your sinuses. Lots of hot tea and coffee could help. There are also some herbal remedies that clear out congestion. Try a local whole foods if you have one."

Livian replied: "Being one of those rare people who does not suffer from allergies, I don't know if this would help but have you tried just a saline nasal spray? Available at any Pharmacy and not expensive."

Barbara replied: "first I dust with a swifter duster with a mask on and my vac has a filter on it. Then those shower soothers help me and the vapor plugs are a god send. Have you tried Clartin? The one they keep behind the counter at the Pharmacy works best for me. My hubby swearers by suddfed night time & those breathe right strips I like the strips my self Hope that helps"

Nasal Congestion, what can be done? Nasal Congestion, what can be done? My mother this week and the past week has been suffering from nasal congestion. She has been taking zyrtec-d, benedryll, contact and municinex and none of these medicines seem to do the trick. Somethig else, I should mentioned, we have a Yorkie for almost two years, can this be the source of the allergies? Even when she is outdoors, the allergy and nasal congestion begins. Please help.

: ) replied: "benedryl D, cold washcloth, steam yourself, humidifier at night, saline solution"

How can I get rid of this nasal congestion? I've tried everything I can think of and it still won't go away. I went to the doctor before it got this bad because I had a fever, sore throat, and ear pain. But he pretty much told me that I had to wait it out. Since Monday I've had really bad nasal congestion. I've tried Sudafed, Zyrtec, the netty pot, a steam room at the gym, vick's vapor rub...but nothing works. I just want to be able to breath through my nose and taste food again! help!

Old School replied: "Vicks 12 hour Utra mist. I swear by it. Works all the time for me."

SnuffySmith replied: "Afrin will shrink the nasal tissue. Go to Walmart and get some."

Lee J replied: "Try an oxymetazoline based nasal spray such as Afrin. You don't want to use it for more than a few days though."

Nasal congestion lasting 3 months….and counting.? I am a 22 year old female. I have been congested (stuffy nose) for over 3 months now. At first I thought maybe I was getting a little cold. When I noticed that my cold meds were not working, i figured that it was just allergies. I decided to try Claratin. I used this for a few weeks and noticed that I was still congested, EVERYDAY. I then called my doctors office and told them that I would like to make an appointment, or would like something to be recommended to me. That’s what brought me to try Zyrtec D. Once again, after a few weeks or so, that was not working either so I decided to make an actual appointmet with my doctor. Basically since then I have been in and out of his office on many occasions and was prescribed 3 other medicines as well 2 nasal sprays. NONE OF THEM HAVE WORKED. This is becoming very stressful and I don’t know what else I am supposed to. My doctor seems to keep bringing up the allergies thing, but I mean I am curious if it could be something more than that, or if it is allergies, I mean what could be causing it and what other things can be done to control this. I am stuffy for atleast 75% of the day, EVERY SINGLE DAY without fail. It is driving me crazy. I cannot sleep, because I cant breathe at night, so it is taking a toll on my entire life. I have tried to do some research online but I am not getting any luck. ((THE MEDICINES THAT I HAVE TAKEN)) SINGULAIR 10 MG TABLET FLUTICASONE PROP 50 MCG SPRAY CEFACLOR 250 MG CAPSULE ALLERGY DN II TABLET IPRATROPIUM 0.06% SPRAY Claritin Zyrtec D Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated, but I am at my whit’s end, and don’t know what else to do. I go back to my doctor tomorrow morning, and maybe I can go to him with some suggestions. Thanking you in advance! Tomorrow when i go back, i requested to see a different doctor within that practice. I live in a small town, not many other physians offices take my insurance...

cesy8791 replied: "well u should change ur doctor i mean i dont think thats normal because thats alot time and i know how it feels that u cant breath because wehn im sick that happens to me but im just only a week or so..got to see other doctor and ask them for different opinios..even thought that can be normal for u because our bodies are all different well good luck"

Can I take Zyrtec and Mucinex together at the sametime? or will the two conflict? I have a big allergy problem (running nose, sinus/nasal congestion, sneezing, watery eyes), and a big coughing problem. Today I went to buy Zyrtec (Claritin 24 hr didn't work much for me at all) and Mucinex DM thanks for your answers

Britni M replied: "I took them together a month or so ago during a bad cold. I never had any problems with mixing the two although I did not find Mucinex all that helpful, the Zyrtec on the other hand worked very well and had me back on my feet in less than 24 hours. Hope you feel better!"

ARMY NATIONAL GUARD RULES!!! replied: "Yeah it is a perfect combination. Its kinda like the two medicines allied in a war against the germs in your body and the medicine is winning."

emtp911 replied: "Mucinex D has guaffinisine (sp) in it. plus dex stuff. 2 very different medicines Mucinex is used for chest cold type, or asthma symptoms. guaff works as a dilator and the dex works as an expectorant The Mucinex will give you the shake and make you very thirsty so be sure and drink plenty of fluids. Clariitin act as an H2 inhibitor. easing allergy symptoms. You can try taking some zantac too. It will help cut down on the reflux associated with it too"

Joshie replied: "I do, only when im so desprate for it that i would rather go in comma than suffer anymore...lol..but when they both kick in and start working, it dries your nasal cavaties up so bad it has to be reversed by a cheap nasal spray, the only thing the sprays are good for is putting a little moister in the area of the cavities, it does not help prevent ANYTING, basicaly its usless."

Searching for help on relieving congestion/post nasal drip? Hi! I've been suffering for about 3 weeks now. I've been on antibiotics, and have recently been put on a steroid inhaler to make it easier to breathe. (I have panic disorder, so things like Sudafed aren't an option for me) I'm using Vicks, as well as Zyrtec. I still have a heaviness in my chest (all clear, x-ray was negative), a lump in my throat (which I assume if post nasal drip), and only feel somewhat better when I use a Breathe Right strip. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to ease up this congestion? The not being able to breathe well is causing my panic to go crazy, as I do suffer from panic disorder. Thanks in advance.

Mercedes replied: "i have most of the problems you have. i take zyrtec,allegra and rhinocourt rhinocourt is AMAZING in relieveing post nasal drip =)"

J McPott replied: "Antibiotics will make you worse."

Danielle J replied: "try to use a water vaporator"

SpitFire91 replied: "try this cold pill thing called X3. its like some kind of mexican something or other, i have a mexican bf who recommended it to me but it works better than any of the popular stuff that you mentioned and its not drowsy."

Andy replied: "i have the exact same allergy problems. I hear that if you shoot water up your nose 2 times a day it will eventually clear all your sinus'. thats what im trying now, just started."

il0vepicKle$ replied: "I'm the same exact way. breathe right strips work great. the antibiotics usually work for me but i take a prescription strength zyrtec. ask ur doctor for it. also try really hot tea and chloroseptic for your throat. or you can use mucinex for your chest. and if you want try affrin for ur nose it works great."

~~~BeRnIcE.~~~ replied: "UP>>congestion is to inhale steam from a hot shower or a humidifier. Fluids. Drink plenty of liquids, such as water, juice or tea, to help thin mucus. Avoid caffeinated beverages, which can cause dehydration and aggravate your symptoms. Chicken soup. Eating any kind of soup is soothing, but eating chicken soup has been shown to speed the movement of mucus through the nasal passages. This helps relieve congestion and limit the amount of time viruses are in contact with the nasal lining. Salt water. Use an over-the-counter nasal saline spray or prepare your own saltwater solution using 1/4 to 1/2 teaspoon of salt mixed with 2 cups of warm water. Both can be extremely effective at relieving congestion. Breathing strips. Most drugstores and some supermarkets sell adhesive strips that you place across the bridge of your nose. These strips open the nasal passages, allowing you to breathe more freely. Decongestants. Beware of over-the-counter decongestants. If used for more than two or three days, they can actually make congestion worse. All decongestants — oral or topical — may have a stimulant effect and raise blood pressure in some people. Children shouldn't use them at all. There's no evidence that they work in children, and they can have serious side effects. Gentler options such as steam, nasal rinses and breathing strips are more effective and don't have side effects."
? replied: "The lump in your throat could also be acid reflux caused by the post nasal drip. An over the counter medicine (if appropriate with you other medicines) could help that. I have used eucalyptus in simmering water to help relieve this kind of feeling. If you have a crock pot to you can use that but as it takes quite some time to heat perhaps a pan on the stove is better. Wasabi is good for congestion and stuffy feeling also."
musicluv replied: "I had a horrible stuffy nose for months. I went to my doctor and she perscribed Nascort for the morning and Saline for the evening. Feel better!"
? replied: "If you're using Zyrtec, then you must have allergies. Could it be the air? Are there any fires/smog where you live? How's the pollen count? Humidity? If it's very humid, that could be the reason why you're having post nasal drip. Why are you on antibiotics? Are you having sinus troubles, (as that could be another allergy related problem that you're having)? One of the best (and drug-free) methods for post nasal drip is a saline rinse. Works for me. Good luck!!"
sim replied: "I suffered from panic attacks and I had the same problem. My nose was always congested and I couldn't sleep at night. I mean I was really bad was like that for 4months it was horrible. While i was at the eye,nose, and throat hospital trying to get help they had a air purifier there and it really helped me. I was trilled i wanted to stay right there. Maybe if you purchase one it will help you. It worked for me and I understand what your going through. I couldn't even leave my house I thought I was gonna suffocate. Night time was the worst I would lay in the bed and immediatly get anxiety attack and jump up pacing back and forth praying to God to take it away. I don't know what ur faith is but prayer also worked for me. God Bless U."
I think that I am developing a immunity to Zyrtec...can someone help me? I want to take 2 10mg tablets, but I don't want to overdose. Is there anything stronger out there? My allergies are itchy nose, throat, ears, eyes & nasal congestion. I have year round symptoms
Kdiva replied: "I would say, you should contact your doctor, and ask about taking Qvar. It's a nose inhaler but it's dry....works very well and clears up everything in your nose. one of the best medicines i've tried that handled my allergies."
OhfoureiqhtL replied: "talk to ur dr."
Chronic congestion and post-nasal drip? For years I have suffered from allergy related congestion that never, ever clears up. I am constantly hoarse, constantly sniffling, and often experience sinus headaches and sore throat. By Dr.s recommendations, I have tried Benadryl, Zyrtec, Allegra, Claritin, and Drixoral, but none of them really work for me. Honestly, I'm totally used to this problem, but if there is a way to resolve it, I would be forever grateful.
Maggie replied: "Try a quarter teaspoon in a eight ounce of warm water, put in a spray bottle and spray up your nose about three times a day, it takes time, but if your post nasal drip is from your sinuses, it will in time cure it."
lovingmynewpuppy replied: "I wish I had an answer that would be of great help, but as someone who has allergies and asthma there are no easy answers for allergies. It would be helpful if your doctor sent you to an allergist to have allergy testing done, so you could hopefully find out what it is you are allergic to so that you could get it out of your environment. Since you say it is year round it could be mold, dust, dust mites or animal dander. I use Singulair and I think it works ok, but I still have some residual congestion and post nasal drip. I also take nasonex, that helps a little too especially my ears that always hurt from all the congestion. I was told when things get real bad to use astilin (nasal spray and it tastes awful so I don't use it!) and claritin. I have also use claranex, that was good too. I have never tried it because I just bring myself to try it, and i don't know why, but I heard cleaning out your sinuses works good, you have to do it daily and you use a special thing I think called a Netti pot and you mix water and salt to make a saline solution and tip your head to one side and pour the solution through one nostril and it will come out the other nostril. Sounds gross, but I guess it works. You can try allergen covers for your mattress and pillows. Vacuum and dust regularly. Good luck! I understand how hard it is."
Allergy Med Advice: Can I take Extra Zyrtec, Claritin? Hi everyone. My allergies are just terrible this time of year due to the emergence of my arch-nemesis: ragweed. The standard dose of 10mg Claritin doesn't work. I tried 10mg of Zyrtec today, and that doesn't work either. So, I was wondering: Can I take double? Or, perhaps, could I take one of each? At the standard dosage, I still have the runny, itchy eyes, the constant nasal congestion, sneeze regularly, and everything. It's like I didn't take anything at all. Benadryl seems to work well, but it's not an option because it makes me feel dopey and sedated for all day. Allegra: Unpleasant side effects / didn't work too well... HELP! Allergy sufferers, I need your advice! 1. Would it be okay for me to take both Claritin and Zyrtec? (Any interactions?) 2. Would it be safe/effective for me to take extra of either?
Geoff G replied: "I am also an allergy sufferer but not from ragweed thank goodness. Do you work with it and if so have you got the proper protective clothing?Gloves ,mask,goggles etc? Have you tried using the anti-histamine nasal sprays in addition to the tablets. I don't advise doubling up on your tablets. What does it say on the insert leaflet? Antihistamines that are used directly in the nose are azelastine (eg Aller-eze nasal spray) and levocabastine (eg Livostin direct nasal spray), both of which can be bought over-the-counter."
♥ Smart_one! replied: "i have the same problem!!!!!! i wouldnt take extra...but u can take over the conter stuff with that i think..."
lala replied: "I too suffer from severe allergies, including ragweed!!! I know how you feel, I'm on 3 allergy meds, and 2 asthma meds right now. I take zyrtec, and no you cannot take more than one a day. You can however take something OTC with it. I always resort to benadryl myself, but don't have the side effects. I would defnitley see your doctor if I were you, they can give you nasal spray's also to help your symptoms."
Jenn B replied: "Try Isotonix OPC-3. It has helped me tremendously as well as some of my friends. It won't make you drowsy either. Go to the website below If you are serious about allergies and natural relief from them."
What prescription allergy medicine should I try now? Hi guys, Opps. Accidently deleted the last one. I suffer with allergies throughout the whole year, which often times turn into Sinus Infections. I've tried Claritin, Allegra, Zyrtec, and Nasacort AQ. None of them seem to work. The Nasacort AQ works for maybe 3 hours and that's it. I've also tried herbs (Fenugreek, ALJ-contains thyme, fenugreek, goldenseal, and Mullein). I'm going to the doctor again on Tuesday to see what we can do because now my lips are extremely dried out and feel like they're burning. I have no food allergies that I know of. I have had allergic reactions before to things like Nair, make-up, and detergent, but that's it. I've also gotten sensitive to smoke within the past year. It flares it up right away now. Typcial symptoms include: runny, watery eyes, sneezing, nasal congestion, post-nasal drip, swollen glands, pressure in face, sometimes head pain, sometimes neck pain, fatigue/sleepiness, What other allergy medicines are out there that will work good
BRIAN J replied: "You are going to have to do strong research with the help of Medical specialist. Continue to try many specialists so they each can do the work."
lyfsavr1 replied: "I suffer with allergies as well and so far what has worked for me is Nasonex. On real bad flare ups I supplement with either Alavert and or Tylenol Multi-symptom. These combined with the Nasonex have worked miracles in me. We are remodeling our house and have ripped down our ceilings and walls. You can imagine the mess we had...106 years worth of dirt and dust, not to mention the allergy problems that went along with it. Also I have since found out I am allergic to these stupid asian beetles. So I have been supplementing a lot lately. Anyhow, try those. Good luck."
Gingersnap replied: "i'm allergic to what seems like everything too and i know how it sucks! i find arius works well for me or benedryl but it makes you sleepy. hope you find something!"
sammy replied: "i take atrax and it works v. well but its also very very drowsy and its even hard to get up the morning after you take it. I know how you fell im allergic to all shelfish, wool, carpet, dust mites, make up and cats its very anoyying since some of them are life threatening, so yeah and i carry an epipen around"
sansrival replied: "It is better to see an allergologist & have a skin testing for the common allergens & have you immunized with it. It is quite expensive but I think it is worth it."
New Life Style Today . Org replied: "I currently still use Allegra D but I have cut way back since I introduced a natural and healthy super juice into my life 2 months ago. A friend of mine who also suffered from allergies has completely gotten of of his allergy medicine since he started drinking this juice 6 months ago. I am convinced I too will be totally off of my medicine before long."
