Lamictal 2007 Information in Q&A
Lamictal changing the way things taste I take 200 mg of Lamictal/day and I would like to know if anyone has experienced changes in the things taste. I have been on lamictal since April 2007. At the end of June 2008, my dose was increased to 200 mg. A couple weeks again, I had a glass of wine and it didn't taste very good and the same thing happened last week. Now, having to give up wine isn't a big deal for me but yesterday it got worse. My mouth tastes icky, ranch dressing (my favorite), an orange smoothie... all tasted bad. I read on a random blog that this occurred to someone else (discribed as metallic taste) but only one person said it. Can't find anyon or any other information about it. If anyone else knows about it, heard of it, or experienced it PLEASE let me know.

It was weird because i'd always loved the way water tasted, but suddenly i felt like i was licking metal. I kinda quit drinking it for a couple months, but then it went away."

Does Lamictal desensitize allergies? I started Lamictal a year ago, and about a year and a half ago I discovered that I am highly allergic to birch trees. Apparently this also means that I am allergic to foods related to that tree, but only if they are raw. (It has to do with certain proteins that they have in common.) For example, apples, pears, and black walnuts made my mouth itch a lot. Then, I started Lamictal in Sept. of 2007, and by spring of '08, I wasn't as miserable with my spring allergies. Over the summer, I started eating raw apples and black walnuts again, and I had no reaction to them at all. I have tried to find research stating that Lamictal may desensitize allergies, but I haven't seen it anywhere. Does anyone know if this is possible, or has anyone on Lamictal had this same experience? Thanks for your input!

pharmacystudenttjlsf replied: "I just searched the Lamictal Handout from the company and there is nothing mentioning this phenomenon. I wouldn't bet on the Lamictal causing a desensitization of your allergies."

Will I have to be on anti-epileptic meds for the rest of my life? I was recently (January 2007) diagnosed with periotal (sp?) lobe epilepsy and was prescribed Dilantin (which I was taken off after a short time because of side effects. Then I was put on Lamictal and some other med (I can't think of the name of it right now. That's part of the problem!) I'm staying at my parent's house until my friends (who have been looking after me) come back from the beach in two days.) Will I have to be on medication for epilepsy for the rest of my life. I've already been on meds for depression 28 years and the thought of having to be on meds for epilepsy for the rest of my life will only worsen then depression. Mark
