How To Take Zantac Resource in Q&A
How long does Zantac take to take effect when prescribed for GERD? My daughter's pediatrician thinks that my daughter has acid reflux, which I think she's right on. She prescribed her infant Zantac. We started giving it to her yesterday, but I haven't seen any significant change. How long does it take to fully take effect? And, eventually does it take care of the spit up all together or does it just make the spit up less acidic?

Ethan's Mommy [06/10/08] replied: "About a week or two to take full effect. It wont take care of all the spit up but it will happen less often and without the acid."

~*~Braden's Mommy MYOB~*~ replied: "It took about 3 days with my son. It doesn't decrease the amount of spit up at all. It just makes it less painful for the child"

Jessica replied: "It took my son at least 3 or 4 days to notice his throat clearing stopping. i would give it a week before you call the dr. My son is now on prevacid and it works greats too."

Evan Blows Bubbles replied: "My son's on Prevacid, but if they're about the same, it took him a good week for it to kick in. After about a week, he had some really good, less fussy, happier days. Now, he has some bad days here and there, but is sooooo much better! He still spits up, but his tummy feels better. He eats better and fusses less."

Jeremiah's Mommy replied: "You won't really see a decrease in the amount of spit up, your daughter will be less fussy. The Zantac will suppress the acids, so they won't come up into the esophagus and cause discomfort. I saw results from the Zantac in about 3 to 4 days with my son."

21 weeks pregnant and tums did not work! Can I take zantac less than an hour after the tums? My doctor okayed both tums and zantac so of course I tried the tums first and it offered little relief. Does anyone know if it is safe to take zantac 150 one hour later? My doc is only on call if you are in labor and I called zantac and they said I have to check with my doc. Grrr... I think I will be changing to a midwife soon!

Baby GIRL coming October 11th!! replied: "I would try to hold off as long as you can, but if your doctor ok'd it then take the Zantac. Have you tried drinking milk and all the other options first? Milk, which I think is disgusting tasting, helps me for about 30 minutes, maybe drink some of that and try to hold off for 2 hours, then take the Zantac."

mama bear replied: "i say yes as long as your doctor knows about it I've had alot of problems with that pretty much all of my life really and tums sometimes work and sometimes didn't but there not that strong either so if you need to take zantac and your doctor knows about it take it"

Is it safe to take zantac and mylanta at the same time? I am taking zantac but it is not doing anything so I want to take some mylanta. Is this ok to do? Also, does anyone have an opinion as to whether pepto bismol or mylanta works better?

jackie_jabar replied: "I have acid reflux and my doctor told me to take them at seperate times in order to make each of the medications effective. I have found that for me the mylanta is best. Pepto just does not seem as strong and effective as the mylanta."

300spartans replied: "you should read the warnings and ingredients, it will say don't take this pill with this ingredient and so on. but always check with a doctor to be sure"

Tapestry6 replied: "Zantac takes a couple of weeks to build up before it starts really working and mylanta is just a short term fix. Maybe your doctor can recommend the stronger version of Zantac. I don't like pepto unless its for diarrhea that is what it was originally made when it was first marketed.."

Dog S replied: "Drug interactions of Zantac are as follows: Ketocnazole; Ranitidine my reduce the absorption of Ketocnazole. Ranitidine should be taken at least 2 hrs after taking Ketocnazole. Sucralfate high doses (2mg) of sucralfate may reduce absorption of ranitidine. Sucralfate shpuld be taken 2 hrs after ranitidine. In short... you need to wait 2 hrs until mixing the drugs."

Can someone take Zantac and Phenergen together? I take Zantac for my stomach, and Phenergen for nausea. Both have been perscribed to me but never have I needed both together is it safe to take them together? (Zantac is for gallbladder issues even after its removal, Phenegen is from nausea I get often) Thanks.

ghanem replied: "hi i want all freind lady only send to me on my e mail "

Linda s replied: "exactly............both are prescribed for different things. it will not hurt to take them both together. one(phenergen) will make you sleepy and the other (zantac) will not"

How long should i take zantac for acid reflux? I suffer from acid reflux and to treat it i take maximum strength zantac 150 mg. I want to know how long i should be taking zantac and if it will eventually cure me of my acid reflux? Also because of the acid reflux my voice sounds very muffled and it makes it hard for people to understand me when i speak will my voice ever go back to normal or is the damage from the acid already done? I have been suffering from acid reflux since i was 18 and now i'm 27.

doc replied: "reflux is a long standing problem . however the symptoms will disappear in next 4-8 weeks . but you have to adhere to anti reflux measure throughout your life and some time we have to give antacids even life long have you had a upper g i endoscopy done and what was the result"

Joe B. replied: "I have it too and Zantac is not going to cure your acid reflux. I do take it sometimes in a pinch, but it's like putting a band-aid on a bad wound. You need to see a doc and get proper treatment. It's only going to get worse. I'm on Prevacid 30mg and it works great."

MattS replied: "Ryan: I can't answer your question like a pro because I'm not a physician, but I do know that many reports say that that you shouldn't take acid reflux medication for longer than one or two months. But I had the same problem and took bottles and bottles of medication and although they helped some, I still had acid reflux at times. I'd be up at night trying to get relief. Right after a meal, I was suffering. I was miserable. Although this lasted for like 10 years, the last three was the worst and that's when I started prescription medications. Then I read about how most are only supposed to be prescribed for 2 weeks and thought, uh oh. Because I hate taking medicine and because I thought the meds can't be that good for my system, plus, they barely helped, I started to look for a natural way to treat/cure my acid reflux. I tried one and it really worked. I haven't taken prescription meds for acid reflux in like 12 months! Plus, I only did the natural treatment for like 7 days and then as needed after that. In the last 8 months, I've used it maybe twice! It really worked for me. I'm 36 years old now. I know there are a lot of scammy stuff out there, but this one really and truly worked for me. I don't know if your interested in approaching your acid reflux naturally, but if you are, I added a link to the website that tells about it. Plus, I added the link about zantac too. Hope this helps and good luck man. MattS"

How long does it take for Zantac to calm my stomach down? my stomach started hurting today and i just came back from the doctor. she prescribed me zantac and Tylenol. how long does it take for zantac to take the pain away? i know it takes a couple of days to get the infection away but how long for the pain?

ckm1956 replied: "It depends on the dose, but it usually works pretty quickly, within just a few hours."

Sar replied: "usually it kicks in within a half hour of taking it - over the next few days you may see your symptoms improve more. If by a week you don't notice any improvement you can try switching over to one of the proton pump inhibitors such as prilosec (omperazole)"

Heather replied: "Neither of those medications do anything for an infection. You weren't prescribed an antibiotic? What did the doctor think was wrong with you? Zantac reduces the amount of acid produced by your stomach, so if you have an ulcer or gastritis (which are caused by bacteria and are usually treated with an acid reducer AND an antibiotic) it can take more than two weeks of taking it as prescribed for your stomach to feel completely better."

Can I take zantac to relieve nausea causes by another medicine? I took 2 20mg lexapro by accident but I go really bad nausea as a side effect from it. Can I take zantac to relieve the nausea or is that mixing too many drugs in my system?

ckm1956 replied: "Zantac works by reducing the acid in your stomach. The nausea from the 2 lexapro actually comes more from the brain (It's complicated), no Zantac won't help. Sorry."

How long does Zantac take to work on a newborn? His pediatrician prescribed him Zantac to take 2 times a day. I just gave him his first dosage. How long dies it take to work? Right away or after a couple of days? I just really don't like to see him in discomfort

Mandi K replied: "It took a few days for it to work on my daughter. It did help though, hang in there."

Timid Women Rarely Make History replied: "Depends. Considering his size, probably rather quickly."

Mommy to a 2yr old replied: "You should see some improvement within 1-3 days. It works rather quickly. I was told to give it a week to work for my daughter, but I saw improvement within 2 days."

C O replied: "We were told it could take about two weeks. It didn't help my son as he kept vomiting it up so they put him on Losac, which helped a ton... took abut a week though!! Hang in there. I'm assuming everyone has told you the elevating the bed to 45 degrees, eat small amounts frequently and burp often.... hang in there.... It gets better. My little man is 4 months, he isn't totally healthy yet but we're getting there... I also cut out all dairy (I'm breastfeeding) and that really seemed to help. Apparently milk intolerances is common in baby with acid reflux..."

How long did you child take to gain weight from Zantac? My son recently got perscribed Zantac. They just said he has "acid reflux." Hes been on it for two weeks now. He is under the 3rd percentile. and can still fit in 3 month clothing. How long did it take ur child to gain some weight from it? I think something else is wrong. He still spits up the same amount and is still around the same weight. Hes 10 months and 16lbs.

sarah rose replied: "my son was diagnosed wit reflux around 2 months and was also given zantac .. he is now 10 months old and weighs 26 pounds and in the 95 percentile but as soon as he started taking the zantac it helped right away and as long as i give it to him it doesnt bother him in anyway . so it worked for him but i think you should def ask the doctor"

How do you get your baby to take Zantac (Ranitidine) for reflux? My 4 month old was put on Zantac for reflux. We gave him his first dose this morning, and he spit it all out. I gave it to him from a syringe, in his cereal, and mixed with juice in a bottle...he would not swallow any of it. Any suggestions on how to get him to take it? Thanks! It is not pills, it is liquid.

NISSI replied: "Crush it, then put it in applesauce. Applesauce usually hides the medications."

Tausha L replied: "Try putting it in something thick so he wont tast it. and dont let him see you putting it in it cause they do pay attention to what your doing.Have you tried his formula that is thick and he might not know its in there"

ericakamp19 replied: "We had the same problem at first..now he opens his mouth and lets us put it in. Yup, we use the syringe...did you try putting in a little at a time in his inner cheek and switching sides...then lightly pinch his nose and he should swallow..he'll get use to it! (he will spit it out at first.)"

I'd rather be at the beach replied: "It tastes horrible! Have you tried it? For some weird reason, it's very minty. It's going to sound harsh, but we would just take the syringe and squirt the medicine into our son's cheek, then close his month (push his chin up). He would swallow it, and after a while he just got used to it. I would do this before a feeding, so right after he got his medicine I would nurse him (so he could get the taste out of his mouth!)"

God Bless our Troops! replied: "If my daughter did that, I would put it in bottle with a bit of formula or breastmilk and shake it up and give it to her. They also have these things that you give them medicine with, they have a nipple on the top and you put the medicine in the bottom... I dont remember what they are called. You can buy them at walmart or walgreens. You give it to them just like a bottle and they suck it right out."
