About How To Afford Accutane in Q&A
What does insurance cover regarding accutane? I am considering seeing a derm because i have dark purplish scars on my face from acne. If you feel the surface of my skin and face it's very smooth! Underneath is where my scaring is. I hate it. Until I was 21 I had perfect skin everyone was super envious of. It's been 6 years of dealing with it and my birth controls (various kinds even those made for people with acne) seem to not do anything! So, does insurance cover accutane? (PPO). and if not, what are some other options that can take it away? I'm getting married in March of 2007 and want flawless skin! But I don't know if I can afford accutane w/out insurance. How much does it cost? Okay, enough of my 20 questions! :) Thanks for any help!! I've tried all the peels, washes, etc by the way...washing morning and night.

LOGIE replied: "none"

icantgetenoughconan replied: "I'm on accutane right now, and I know for a fact that it is extremely expensive. Hoever, it is covered by my insurance (united healthcare) becuase I have a Health Savings Account which I've already maxed out on other things. Consult your insurance company and make an appointement with a dermotologist for details. What you have sounds like cystic acne, which does leave scars, and unfortunatley there is no topical treatment for that. Accutane is your best bet if you want "flawless" skin, but keep in mind it also only works for about 80% of the people who use it."

afanofnataliewood replied: "I work in the medical field, I know that even PPO's do not cover the cost of Accutane. This is because treatment of acne is what insurance companies consider "cosemetic" and as we all know cosemetic procedures are not covered by insurance companies because they are NOT life threatening. Accutane-from what I've seen can set you back 100's of dollars for just ONE tube of it. And for your last question, I've always had horrible acne, but I went to my physician a few years ago and he prescribed a medication called "MINOCYCLINE" (AKA TETRACYCLINE) It's worked wonders for my skin, it's a capsule 500mg taken twice daily. I'll warn you-my first month I had some stomach pain, but in the end it was worth it. As your Dr. about the above medication. Also note, MINOCYCLINE is a generic form of TETRACYCLINE (meaning, minocycline is covered under all insurance's, even HMO's while TETRACYCLINE is not) Hope this helps!"

pctechiejosh replied: "I took accutane and my Blue Cross/Blue Shield Covered it; however, you should probably check with your insurance co to be sure. It usually falls under your Rx coverage."

kim1980tx replied: "They have generic accutane now. Most insurance will cover it, since acne is considered a medical condition not cosmetic. Accutane is a pain though because you have to go for pregnancy tests every month and jump through hoops to get your RX filled, and use two forms of BC. But it does work wonders for a lot of people. If your face is just purple from scars and you no longer have actual acne though, accutane will not help. It doesn't get rid of the scars. For that you should see a derm or cosmetic surgeon for either microdermabrasion or laser resurfacing, but neither of those are covered by insurance and cost $$$$!"

accutane??????????????? i am 20 years old and on my parents insurance. I have really bad acne and have tried several different antibiotics and topicials to no avail. my derm. finally prescribed me accutane and I have read such miracles that I am ready to try it. I am AWARE of all the "possible" effects to this drug. My parents are against it and will not pertake in paying for it. I do not mind paying for it, however do my parents have the right to tell the insurance company to not let it be run through? Or will hippa protect me and want I wish to buy? I know I can't afford it without insurance (500 bucks...) ????

Kelly W replied: "There are SO many alternatives than accutane. Please talk to a dermatologist before considering doing this."

Ryan M replied: "I took Accutane when I was the same age as you, maybe a year younger. It was the best decision I made for my skin. It's pretty miserable for the 6 months or so that you are on the treatment, plus the monthly blood work, but if you can tolerate the dry lips and all that it gets rid of your acne, for good. I didn't have acne that badly at all, but it seemed to also have conditioned my skin to the point where I actually look better than I did before I took it. Several of my friends have also "endured" Accutane with similar results. As far as your parents, you might be able to talk them into it if you can have a doctor or your dermatologist help your cause. Make sure you are prepared to tell your parents why you want it -- most importantly, if you have bad acne now, you'll likely have scarred skin later in life -- and that doesn't go away without treatments much more severe than Accutane. Just make sure you've exhausted your other options (antibiotics, creams, and be sure to try Proactiv or AcneFree [benzoyl peroxide washes/lotion and witch hazel and aloe toner]). Good luck."

Do I have to see a dermatologist for Accutane? I currently don't have health insurance, and am considering taking Accutane. However, since I don't have insurance, I can't afford continuous visits to a specialist like a dermatologist. I CAN afford to see my family doctor who charges me a flat rate for each office visit. But, from what I've heard from other people, a dermatologist (not a family doctor) is the only person who can prescribe Accutane for you. Is this correct?

jenn replied: "yes."

BGTONY replied: "yes"

Luis R replied: "Yes."

i did It 4 teh lulz replied: "yes."

Vicky S replied: "Technically, anyone can prescribe it (as long as they are signed up with the "i pledge" program) , but considering the serious nature of the possible side effects involved, I would think you would want to be followed by a derm. Taking accutane involves monthly blood tested (absolutely required before you pick up your prescription each month) and a monthly doctor visit so they can check you out and make sure you are not having any dangerous side effects. The blood tests and monthly office visits are probably gonna be expensive. Good luck!"

Meg replied: "Unfortunately, there are pretty significant health risks associated with the Accutane drug, so there is a lot of administrative red tape that you have to go through in order to get it. The prescribing doctor has to be registered with the iPledge program in order to be an authorized prescriber. While I don't think general physicians are precluded from registering, it's mostly dermatologists who go through this registration process. I guess it's worth a call to your primary care doctor's office just to double check. In addition to monthly visits, you also have the cost of the medication itself and monthly blood draws (more frequently if you have any complications). You might want to find a smaller dermatology office and just see what they can do for you. Before I started Accutane, some referral issues prevented me from getting my dermatologist visits covered by my insurance and the dermatologist I saw was really great about it. He charged me at a reduced rate, showed me how to do procedures instead of doing them himself (so that he wouldn't have to charge me for them) and helped me find prescriptions that would be covered under my insurance. I know Walgreen's has a program that is $20 for the year and can get you reduced rate prescriptions; that might be worth looking into as well to help subsidize the cost of the prescription itself. Good luck!"

How much does accutane cost, and is it hard to find a dermatologist? Does anyone know how much it costs to get Accutane? Mind you I don't have any insurance and am living on my own. I go to school part time and work part time. I was wondering if I might be able to afford it. For those of you who have insurance, how much does the insurance company pay, and how much do you pay? Should I look into getting an insurance provider or would it cost about the same if I were to pay out of pocket? Also, is it hard to find a dermatologist? How does one go about finding one? Maybe the dermatologist can help me find an insurance carrier that would help with the costs. And are there other costs for being on this medicine? I'm pretty sure the visits to the dermatologist will cost money, and the cost of gas for getting to and from the office. Anything else? Thanks for all your help.

Sizzle replied: "Accutane cost alot. Determatologist are not hard to find and or not that expensive. You may not even Accutane, that's only for people with severe acne and who have tried everything else."

blahblah replied: "Well here in Jamaica its pretty expensive too, and only covered by insurance if the prescription is from a dermatologist. It's about J$8700, that's about US$135, without insurance for about 30."

iguana replied: "WAIT!!!! Before you do accutane...try this. My daughter was given this by a chinese herbalist and it works phenomenally. Just give it a little time to do it's thing and take 5 pills, 3 times a day. They look like black buckshot, but I saw an UNBELIEVABLE change in my daughter's appearance. If you can afford it, also do accupuncture, but the Fu Fang will work without it just as well. It's incredibly pure and incredibly cheap. ($7.69 I think for 100 pills - but buy alot and you will never be without) Go to Order: Fu Fang Zhen Zhu An Chuang Pian (100 pills) or Fu Fang Zhen Zhu an Chuang Wan (200 pills) I kid you not that this stuff is phenomenal. Please try it. You won't regret it."

Cheap alternative to Accutane? I can't afford Accutane, nor will I ever be able to. I can't afford the generic versions either. Has anyone found an over-the-counter pill that really helped their acne? Topical stuff hasn't worked for me at all. I have a feeling it's a hormonal imbalance that I have. I'll try anything - I'm 30, it's not severe or really nodular acne, but it's getting worse since I went off the pill.

feline_farmer1 replied: "Nothing works like Accutane - believe me - I've tried everything out there."

Davonne replied: "if it's worse since going off the pill it's most likely hormonal. look into Spironolactone. takes a couple months to see any real change but it is great for the hormonal break outs!"

Accutane without insurance and depression? I told my mom I wanted to go on accutane-my face has mild acne but my back has moderate cysts and sometimes can be severe. Its really embarassing as i cant wear a swimsuit or tank top. I have tried everything for acne and my mom now says we cant afford accutane because we have a 5000 deductible, whatever that means. They just changed out insurance january 1st. She is also saying we dont have as much money any more to buy other things then went on a rant. Now im feeling extremely depressed and im actually crying because It's her genes that gave me this crap and the one time i really want something in my life I cant fix it. PLEASE how much would accutane cost in north carolina according to my health care? She says my acne is bad but she doesnt have to live with it and feel the physical and emotional pain. Any help would be appreciated, im just so depressed and angry. WHY CANT I BE PERFECT LIKE OTHER GIRLS? I feel like i have so many problems and im just hopeless at this point.

[Oily Sking] Any way to shut down oily glands? Okay, I have mild acne when I use Retin-A Micro (acne product). The thing is that it dries my face out, which probably leads to my really really oily skin. I can not afford accutane at the moment. Anything else?

jord1986 replied: "no, not really the only way to actually stop the oil from being produced in the first place is accutane. really all you can do is absorb it once it's already been produced."

Isotretinoin (Accutane) - How Long Does It Take to Work? Weight Loss? I was wondering if anyone knows how long this stuff generally takes to work and why some reports say it can cause unwanted weight loss? What would make it do that? To be fair, I should mention that I ordered it from out of the US so that I would not have to go through the trouble and expense of getting a prescription. I am a female but I have no chance of getting pregnant and I understand it can have serious side effects. I'm taking 20mg pills - I cut them in half and take a half, twice a day. I'm just not sure how long I should expect to take it and I don't want to take it for too long ... If you don't know, just don't answer. There is no point in telling me to talk to a doctor. I can't afford it and I'm not going to.

bruce_eel replied: "not sure about the weight loss...i didn't lose any while i was on it. it does dry you out significantly so maybe you lose some water weight...but thats easily remedied by drinking water. after about a month i noticed my acne was getting better and after 3 months it was completely clear. the worst side effect in my opinion was my dry lips....i used aquaphor for that...it was a freakin godsend. good luck."

goldwild replied: "I took 30 mg of accutane (once a day) for about 4 months. My dermatologist switched me to 20 mg of accutane (still once a day) about a month and a half ago and while my acne hasn't gone away, it has definitely improved. The acne looked worse for the first month or so but gotten better, slowly. As for the weight loss, I don't know where those reports came from. My dermatologist told me to eat fatty foods because the pills absorb better with it so I've gained about 5 pounds since being put on the accutane. You don't have to cut the pill in half. Take it at night and take it for 4-6 months. I've been on accutane for almost 6 months now and I've been told I'll be on it for another month."

Can I get accutane from my doctor? i dont have a derm and i cant afford/dont have time for one, i just want the perscription from my doc. is this possible? i have insurance, i just dont have time for a derm and i know they cost more then just a doc... my brothers wedding is in august...

arlene replied: "ask him, all he can do is say no. maybe he will give you one. can't hurt to ask."

Aunt Jemima replied: "If you can't afford a doctor you're probably not going to be able to afford Accutane. It runs about 400-500 dollars a MONTH without insurance. If you have insurance it may be around 100-200 dollars a month, still expensive. Figure you'll be on this for around 6 months, that's a lot of money being spent on this medicine. Plus the side effects are pretty bad. Just warning you about those too. Please try something else before you go on this drug, it's very dangerous. Edit- I forgot to add something. You'll need monthly blood test to make sure your liver and body are functioning alright. You definitely need a doctor to go over those results. Without a doctor supervising you while on the medicine, you won't be able to take it, for your healths sake."

Jonathan replied: "Hey Angie, Accutane can be dangerous There is a free ebook and acne ecorse at I think on like part 2 he talks all about acutane. and read the free FREE EBOOK Titled "Easy Tips To Cure Your Acne" It has some really good product information too! Hope that helps! Jonathan"

Roxeanne replied: "NO. NOT Accutane, believe me, it's not the solution you're looking for! What the skin needs is a product that clears pores and kills bacteria, thus preventing hair follicles from clogging and turning into acne. This is what you should be looking for if you want to get rid of those ugly acne. Before trying any treatment, I suggest you read this informational source that listed the most effective acne treatments available: P.S. I also know someone who used to suffer from severe acne for 14 YEARS and finally got rid of it completely. She's sharing her story at her site: Maybe you could learn from her inspirational story ."

how to get generic accutane? what is the cheapest way for a poor family to get generic accutane ? should i get insurance (if yes can you suggest one i can afford) or should i go to mexico and get it cheaper there or order cheap online?

Dio replied: "If you get it from Mexico or even online, it is not the same stuff you get in the pharmacy and it may be contaminated with other chemicals or it will be significantly diluted, in which case, you will end up spending the same amount as if you got it at the pharmacy, in the long run because it won't be as effective and you will need more of it to work properly."
