Headache Topamax And Weight Loss Resource in Q&A
has any one tried topamax for headaches and weight loss? I get head aches on a regular basis and i am also over weight one of my co wokers told me i should ask my doctor about topamax that it helps greatly with the headaches and alos as one of the side effect of decreased apititte. has any one had any personal experiances with this medication?

Sprig replied: "This is a good medication for headaches and for weight loss, but it is also NOT a medication to mess around with. The side effects are seriously intense for a lot of people and it's generally prescribed for epilepsy (it's an anti-convulsant) or migraine. It's important to understand that migraine is a not just a bad headache. Topamax is usually given to people who have severe migraine disease which includes a combination of severe headaches, visual changes, often numbness and tingling, nausea, vomiting, hearing things, seeing things, and a series of other neurological problems. If you just have headaches and need to loose weight, learn what's triggering your headaches and take care of that first, then try to manage your diet and exercise. There are a lot of less intense drugs that can be used to prevent headaches and even less severe migraine disorder that have less side effects and are much cheaper. Trust me, topamax is not a drug that should be taken without absolute necessity. I take it because I have migraine headaches everyday which take away my vision, make me sick, make my face and hands numb, etc.... i.e. I really have no other choice. My PCP thinks it's such an icky drug that he sent me to a neurologist to prescribe it because he didn't think I should take it unless it was really going to work. The side effects are horrible- I'm dizzy all the time, I feel like someone is stabbing needles into my feet, my mouth is dry, I'm drowsy all of the time, I have trouble forming words when I talk to people, I have a hard time concentrating, and so one. Really, I just want to stress, don't take this drug unless it's the only thing that works for you and you really cannot function in the world without it. It sucks and it's expensive, even with great insurance. It costs me $90/month for a relatively low dose and my husband works for the federal government so we have excellent insurance. It's a gross drug."

Has anyone ever taken TOPAMAX for weight loss OR taken it for headaches and have experienced weight loss ? im trying to lose weight and i went and saw my doctor today and she said that she may put me on TOPAMAX to lose weight but its really a headache medicine if anyone could share there experience or any info concerning the weight loss aspect of it i would really appreaite it thanks alot :)

Cristian replied: "no"

Tina T replied: "I currently take it for back pain. Yes, it 's prescribed for migraines, but some people do lose weight while on it. There are some side effects that you may find bothersome: tingling of the hands and feet, soda and beer have a metallic taste to them, no appetite, very hard to concentrate You can read up on it more:--what-to-expect.html"

Sergey45 replied: "Yes, I did take Topomax for headaches and yes I did expirince weight loss on it."

Does Topamax aid in weight loss? My psychiatric physician just put me on Topamax as a mood stabilizer. She told me that it should also help with migraine headaches and aid in weight loss. I'm wondering how it works to aid in weight loss. Do you lose your appetite so the weight drops off, or are you supposed to be eating 100% healthy and exercising (which I know I should do anyhow)? I am taking this in addition to Zoloft 100mg for Depression and Anxiety.

natmac replied: "HI, Im on Topamax for Migraines, and when I was first started on it I did lose some weight, through loss of appitite. But once I settled down on the medication, the side effects disappeared and the weight crept back on. I dont actually know how it works as an appitite suppressant but it does for a while!"

Jenny H replied: "I have been through it all and know what's it about. The main thing is to stick in there. You can't be an addict to food and never exercise if you want to live a healthy life and keep the weight off. I've worked out, done every diet, and all types of classes. Nothing works, besides dedication and intelligence towards the subject of losing weight. First, depending on how much weight you need to lose, your diet is the first concern. You can't eat 10,000 calories a day and expect the weight to come off, even if you are exercising a lot. Which brings us to the next thing. Duh, Exercising... This is a must especially if you need to a lot of weight. Get at least 30 mins of some good hardcore exercising. Do some cardio, in the long run, it's good for the heart. However, I find the most hardest part of losing weight/keeping it off, in my diet. It's so hard to keep your fingers out of the cookie jar or those chocolate goodies. I've found a great addition to help any one out, it's a natural weight loss supplement called Proactol. Now don't get all crazy on me and say diet pills don't work. That is true, but not in this case. This one isn't meant to burn pounds while you sit on the couch. It's an appetite suppressant, along with being a fat binder. I saved money on the pills at theweightlossplace .com along with getting some good info. It basically makes those fingers not go towards the cookie jar. For me it's the best pill I've tried and I've tried cupboards full. Now this doesn't mean you have to follow my foot steps but I've successfully lost roughly 70 pounds and keeping it off til this day. Well good luck and remember what I said, Dedicate."

Erika replied: "I'm not sure how it works as a weight loss pill but it does. I had gained 30 lbs from taking Depakote and when I stopped taking it, my doctor put me on Topamax and the weight just fell off. I still ate all of the same foods and I continued with the same workout routine, but for some reason the weight just melted off. It might be important to know that I was also on wellbutrin at the time."

Topamax and weight loss? Am I the ONLY one who has NOT lost weight on Topamax??!! I was put on it two weeks ago (mainly for headaches but my doc knows I want to lose 10-15 pounds) and if anything I have GAINED a pound or two!!! I haven't noticed a change in my headaches and I have TERRIBLE acne!! I am up to 50mg (25 mg 2x a day) and STILL no change....well maybe just more acne. The only change I have noticed is that coke seems to taste a little flat to me (but that hasn't stopped me from drinking it! I thought EVERYONE noticed weight loss on this drug!! Leave it to me to get the side effect (acne) that 2% of people have!! I am TOTALLY noticing that I have a case of the "stupids" too. I do NOT like that! I guess I am just wondering if I haven't seen weight loss by now, will I see weight loss on a higher dosage or after a few more weeks? Even so, I don't like the acne and the forgetfullness....

Friend replied: "I never had acne on it. I took it twice. The first time around I lost 60 lbs to the point where it was dangerously unhealthy and I had to stop taking it. I was on a pretty high dose though. 400mg a day in total. The second time I went on it (after gaining some weight back) I only did 200mgs a day and I noticed that I didn't really lose weight AND I felt like an idiot because I kept spacing out and forgetting things. I think it all has to do with correct dosages. Other than that, it worked wonders for me."

The Doctor's wife replied: "Topamax is a horrible med to take for weight loss. The side effects will just get worse as you up the dose so I wouldn't be excited about it. I didn't lose weight on it (was taking it for migraines). I had to stop taking it because it was making my hands, feet, and hips numb. I was also completely confused when I was taking it and in a daze all the time. It's not the safest drug around so if you're really just taking it to lose weight, I would stop."

Topamax for migraines & weight loss side effect.? The doc prescribed me 50mgs of Topamax twice a day to prevent my horrible incapcitating migranes. My question is if you're taking Topamax or know someone who is, for migraines have you lost a signifigant amout of weight? If so how much weight in what time period and how much and how often are you taking it? Please serious answers, no sarcastic answers. I can't live with these headaches anymore.

Susan D replied: "I took Topamax for about 7 months before I felt it stopped working. My migraines were fewer and less severe while taking it, but i had to keep up-ing the dosage. Ended with 100mg, and didn't want to go higher. About weight loss - I didn't lose, but seemed to eat whatever I wanted w/o gaining anything. Weird. I truly believe it affects your metabolism, but my neurologist doesn't think so. No side effects that I remember. Try it! A friend of mine has been taking the same dosage for about 3 months, and has had VERY few migraines, and no side effects either."

Loon-A-TiK replied: "i used to take 100mg/day for bipolar disorder. topamax is used off-lable as a mood stabilizer too, so it isn't just for migraines. though it does work for them. i never had one while i was taking topamax. it is hard for me to pinpoint how much weight i lost due to the topamax and what was other factors, because i did a few things at once to lose weight. i gained about 30lbs on a different medication, and wanted to lose it. my psychiatrist put me on topamax to help me, i went off of the other drug, and i joined the gym and weight watchers. i lost the weight in under 2 months. so yeah, i think the topamax helped, but i'm not sure what role it played. i've looked up the averages, and the average is 8lbs. i hope this helps."

Kokomira replied: "Good grief, it seems that you tell so much about yourself here, but here goes! I take Topomax for migraines. I have been taking it for almost a year. 50mg twice a day, did not even make a dent in my migraines. I am taking 200mg a day at night but need to take 300 mg. I haven't lost any weight however, I seem to maintain without any effort at all. If I could get my energy level back I would go back to the gym but I need to get the hours of sleep to balance the Topomax. Taking higher dosages, YOU MUST SLEEP! The migraines have lessened but not totally gone. If I go back to 300, they would go away again, but I don't like taking so much and of course, I don't like sleeping for so long. I have been told that taking 300 mg would make me lose weight. I can't attest to that though. My suggestion is focus on the migraines and stick to that. If you are taking Topomax for the weightloss, you are taking it for the wrong reasons. See the potential for weightloss as a positive by-prodoct, if you need to lose weight. Good luck with your migraines!"

Amanda B replied: "My sister, mother .and myself have all taken Topomax. My sister took it for seizures, she did loose weight but she was also dieting at the same time. My mother takes it for weight loss right now. It does seem to give her an egde, and if she isn't dieting she can maintain her weight w/o trying. Myself, I take 100mg every night (taking it in the day made me too tired) for migraines. I also have maintained my weight w/o watching what I eat. The worst side effect that we all had (varing doses) was being unable to think clearly. The reason my sister quit taking it was she couldn't take more than 50mg a day without being a complete dits. The Dr. said this is a verifiable side effect. I had trouble thinking clearly at 150mg but my mother takes 250mg without any problem, if she takes 300mg though she also can't think as clearly. My point is, the side effects of Topomax vary from person to person. I know that it works for my migraines and although I'm not taking enough to loose weight, it has helped not gain any. Talk to your Dr. about increasing your dose 25-50mg and see if you notice a difference. Although weight loss may not be your primary reason for using this, it sure can be a great side effect! Good luck!"

Topamax; migraines and weight loss? How well does this work for the prevention of migraines? I've been on it for about a week (50 mg) and I'm still getting headaches. I've also heard it will make me lose weight; will it be a lot? I'm not trying to melt overnight lol Should I exercise though, because I do want to lose a few pounds, or should I let the medicine take its own course? Thanks for all your help! PS- A site with specific migraine and weight info would be fantastic = ]

Lisa B replied: "Topamax is migraine medication and can also be a mood stabilizer. If it isn't working, you should discuss it with your doctor. However give it more than a week; usually medication such as this takes about two weeks to take effect. As for the weight loss, Topamax can be used for weight loss in very high doses. I doubt you will see much of a difference with your dosage, but it might curb your appetite a bit. I've been on Topamax for years as a mood stabilizer and it keeps my migraines in check."

HubP replied: "Migraine: Normally, periodic attacks of head aches on one or two sides of the head. It may be accompanied by vomiting, increased sensitivity of the eyes to light (photo phobia), increased sensitivity to sound (phono phobia), blurred vision, dizziness, cognitive disturbances, and other symptoms. Some migrines may not include head-ache, and migrines may or may not be preceded by an aura. "

Any J replied: "Exercise and Migraines One of the main things, however, that triggers a migraine is exercise - but of course I can't avoid doing that! It's worse in the summer because it's hot and the sunlight is very bright. Food and Migraines So I took a tablet and carried on with my evening. However when the headache is particularly bad, the tablet takes longer to work and the side-effects are stronger - and I get an overwhelming craving for something sweet. Migraine 'Cures' As an aside, I have been to the doctor's numerous times to find out what I can do about my migraines. Needless to say, all that is offered is more tablets. In fact, I was finally referred to a headache specialist a while ago. I would recommend this website"

Crazy_Freak replied: "Topamax actually works pretty well for migraine prevention. I have been on it for about 3 months now, and once my dosage got up to 100 mg I was completely headache free. Although, it does make me extremely tired all the time and I am starting to notice a lot of the side effects coming on. One of these is the weight loss as you asked about. Yes, Topamax will cause you too lose weight. I lost about 7 lbs after my first few weeks on it and I really don't need to be losing weight. I would continue to exercise because that keeps your body in shape, but just remember to keep an eye on your weight. However, this side effect doesn't affect everyone and you may not really lose a significant amount of weight. It all depends. I hope I answered your question!"

Will Topamax, with dieting and walking help me lose a lot of weight? I'm WAY over weight. I'm 16 only 5'3'' and weigh like 218 so I really want to lose A LOT of weight. My doctor put me on topamax for my headaches and he said that might help me drop like 50 pounds. So I was really happy about that. So I decided to go on a diet to help it along and lose even more. I want to weigh like 120 because I'm so short. My topamax dose is just got increased to 100. I've been taking it for 2 weeks and have only lost 6 pounds. I haven't started walking too much yet. But I plan to in the morning 2 miles and after diner 2 miles. I'm also eating between 700-800 calories a day. I heard the topamax stops the weight loss after 6 months, so i want to get to my ideal weight by then...so at the rate I am going, do you guys think I will be between 120-140 by early next year or end of this year?

How many milligrams of Topamax do I need before I begin to see weight loss? I just started Topamax 1 week ago. 25mg's twice a day. Its definitely strong and I'm trying to adjust to it. I do get very sleepy and sluggish on it and it's hard to focus and not make serious typo's at work. I sleep well!! Soda tastes horrible. Flat really. Which is a shame because I love soda but I guess that's for the best. No tingling sensations though. No headaches yet. Thank God. But I do still have an appetite. I wanted the added benefit of the weight loss. Can someone please tell me how many milligrams I have to work up to before that added benefit kicks in? I sure would be grateful.

Peaches (The Original) replied: "It is different for everyone. When I used it, I saw weight loss at only 50 mg's per day. But, be aware that these side effects you already complain about with the low dosage get worse when the dose is increased. Many of them, like forgetfulness, sleepiness, concentration issues, and finding the correct words, do not go away even if you take a stable dose for a prolonged period of time. You do not want to get up too high on this medication just to get the potential weight loss bonus. This drug can also cause your liver and kidney function to decrease and you need to be tested at least every 90 days while taking it. You need to take this drug for the reason it is prescribed, either as a preventative medication for migraines, or for seizures. Taking it for weight loss is just going to mess you up. And it is very hard to come off of once you have been taking for more than about 90 days. You will have problems if the dose gets too high and you need to cut back for any reason."

Does anyone have experience with Topamax? My doctor wants to prescribe me an anti depressant and topamax as a mood stabalizer, both taken together. Anyone have experience with this? He said it will product weight loss and headache relief as well **** Also, how much does it usually cost?? I have insurance but I am just generally wondering? is it considered "expensive"

jon replied: "one time my friend bet me i couldn't drink 2 gallons of thompson's water seal in an hour he lost"

Blackcompe replied: "Topamax is an anti-convulsant medication used for the prevention of migraine headaches. It will not be useful for migraine relief, prevention only. Anti-depressants have also been known to be effective for migraines."

jacqueline replied: "I have a family member who took it for weight loss and it didn't help much but I had a friend who took it for headaches and it helped her alot with her head and she lost >20lbs, and I have a co-worker who took it as a mood stabalizer she said it did nothing for her either. The point is that it effects ppl in different ways and you will never know if you don't try it...good luck"

uberzwitter67 replied: "I have no idea why this would be a mood stabilizer- everyone that takes it as an anti-convulsant only experiences more fogginess remembering things and concentrating, I can't think of anyone saying they felt anything but more aggressive on it. The weight loss is negligible. I find it annoying that they keep wanting to find so many off-label uses for it. It's a really harsh drug as far as side effects, if you don't need it don't go on it. And it is expensive. Buying 4-5 pills one time cost me like $50 bucks."

Aaliyah replied: ", There is really no secret to weight loss. All you need to do is eat less calories than your body burns in a day. One thing that is very important is to make sure that you are eating a healthy amount of carbs, proteins, and fats. Adding a 45 minute walk to your day also helps a lot in the weight loss process. There are also supplements that you can use to help give your metabolism a boost as well as add vitamins and anti-oxidants to your diet. One you should check out is the Acai Berry which is considered a Super Food because of its nutrients."

Does Topamax help counteract SSRI weight gain? I've only been on Lexapro for 4 weeks, I'm starting to gain about a tenth or two of a pound each week, which is common with SSRIs. Most people who DO gain will gain gradually and end up gaining close to 20 pounds in a year. I went to see my doctor today and explained the problem. He decided to put me on 50 mg of Topamax, in addition to Lexapro, since it has been proven to help people on SSRIs to lose weight. Its label use is actually for epilepsy and migraine headaches. Has anyone else been put on this drug to counteract the effects of and SSRI? Or have you ever been on Topamax by itself and seen weightloss as a side effect? What dosage is required to see weight loss benefits? Also, has anyone experiences hairloss with this drug? I've heard that can be a side effect.

brandon h replied: "yes"

nita5267 replied: "I had gained a lot of weight from Paxil & an anti-psychotic. My doctor put me on Topomax and Prozac, and the weight fell off. I wasn't even trying. After a while, though, I started getting too tired and backed off all the medication completely."
