Does Trazodone Work For Bipolar Resource in Q&A
Is Trazodone and Valproic Acid good for BiPolar? Yes- it is from a Doc, but he is trying it out because he is just an MD.

combackkidxxx replied: "as long as your doctor prescribes it...yes. but if you have it illegally or something like that....no."

I Hate Life And You F#$K OFF! replied: "thats a good question. i'm bipolar too but i don't know the answer sorry... stupid i know i shouldn't have even typed anything here... sorry.. :("

xblondex replied: "Valproic acid is a good mood stabilizer and trazodone is an anti-depressant, also used to help sleep. I would not go to my regular doctor for it though. Regular doctors shouldn't be prescribing mental health drugs. You would be better off seeing a psychiatrist who is used to psych meds. If this combination of drugs don't work, there are plenty of others you can try and the doses can also be adjusted."

What could zoloft gapabentin and trazodone mixed do to someone who is bipolar? could they cause hypomania?

Brandy D replied: "This is really something you should talk to a doctor or pharmacist about. Since mania is one of the main features of bipolar disorder, it could mean that the drugs aren't working and need to be adjusted. If the patient's symptoms are usually primarily depressive symptoms, and then after a med change he/she suddenly experiences hypomania--then yeah, it could be the meds. Often when there are possible interactions or intolerable side effects, doctors may prescribe the meds anyway because the potential benefits outweigh the risks. Only the prescribing doctor or a pharmacist can make a proper evaluation."

Any hope for treatment refractory bipolar disorder? I'm 20, been depressed/anxious my entire life, diagnosed with Bipolar when I was 12. Seen upwards of 7 psychiatrists, 5 psychologists (DBT, CBT, etc). Diagnosed with Treatment Resistant Bipolar 1 Rapid Cycling Not Otherwise Specified. Lithium's pretty good with the mania but nothing has ever been able to treat the depression. It's taken over my life and I just want hope that one day this illness will not dictate everything I do. My doctors are just blindly guessing at this point and a lot of them will just decline to treat me because they don't know what to do. Here is what I am taking currently: Lithium Lamictal Abilify Klonopin N Acetyl Cysteine Here's what I've taken in the past: Zoloft, Trazodone, Zyprexa, Neurontin, Inositol, Depakote, Paxil, Wellbutrin, Lithium, Xanax, Valium, Seroquel, Lamictal, Lorazepam, Prozac, Ambien, Strattera, Lunesta, Melatonin, Abilify, Cytomel, Cymbalta, Provigil, Fish Oil, Effexor, Lexapro, Buspar, Rozarem, Geodon, Emsam I try so hard to fight this. I'm educated, knowledgeable, read books and medical papers about anything relating to my illness. I want to be better; there are periods when I think I am but then I cycle back down. There is just something messed up in my brain and I don't know what it is. Can anyone give me any kind of hope? Has anyone been through this? Does anyone know of something that could help me? I want to be able to go to school and have friends and get out of bed. I'm smart, I'm creative, I work hard, but the only thing that I ever get to talk or think about is medication. Please don't tell me to go off my medication, I've tried that and it doesn't have good results. I need SOMETHING. I'm willing to give you copies of my med records, lab work, detailed accounts of my history, med reactions, anything. I know this is sort of a stupid way to go about this but I feel like I've exhausted all my options. Please help me. I am desperate. I don't know what to do. I've tried ECT but I have to go off of Lamictal and Klonopin to do it and I end up much worse off than I was before.

Nike replied: "there's one called Electroconvulsive Therapy(ECT) but this has a side effect, it might cause memory impairment."

me replied: "If there is nothing left for you to try do try ECT, i knw someone who had it and it helped them a lot. I know its a scary decision to have this but they knock you out and you wont feel anything. You have to have a course of treatment like one a week for a set time. but its good a treating treatment resistant depression, in clinical depression and bipolar. good luck"

LyssaLady replied: "I'm in your shoes right now. I'm 22 and have been sick since I was 12 too. I'vfe tried pretty much all of the meds that you just listed. I am taking Lamictal, ambien and oxycodone right now for pain from gaining weight, bones hurt, back problems and really bad panic attacks. The oxycodone, even though an opiate get's rid of most of the times that i cycle and decreases the times I cycle. It's hard to find a doctor that would perscribe a person with a mental disorder painkillers but the key is to be very honest with the person and tell them how much pain you are in. I went to a neurologist tell him that I knew that oxy was an opiate but it kept me from cycling when I needed it so I could live my life and still work on finding other means of keeping me under control. I haven't completed DBT therapy yet and I am going to try again and also try ampthetamines for my hyperactiveness and my inability to concentrate. For some reason on journals I've read that people like us take adderall or Wellbutrin and that seems to stop the cycles(both are ADD medications). I'v ebeen on countless meds too to get myself to sleep. I take 2 10mg ambien a night to get to sleep because that's how bad I worry about the future and I'm always wired. Also I found out that there is brain surgery that exists for people with mood disorders. They do the operations in China and it is actually a law over there that people our age need to get brain surgery in order to fix us. Problem is over there, the patients come out partly and permanantly brain damaged. I don't know what the procedure is called but all I know is that you need a neurologist, family doctor, and phsychiatrist to give a doctor permission to have this surgery done. I'm looking into this surgery and can't find anything yet. I'll let you know when I find some information? I hope this information helped. -LyssaLady"

Eagles Fly replied: "I can hear your desperation. Most of the MDS. you mention I've heard about because my daughter, now 37 yrs. old has bipolar, her 10 year old daughter has bipolar and her teenage 15 year old daughter has bipolar + plus other issues that I can't remember them all. So that leaves me at the head of the line. I'm currently taking lamictal, ADD medication and anxiety medication and will no doubt be on lithium by my next appointment. I held off this long, but have to admitt, being first in line does say something like haredity or it's in the genes. Yes, there is a difference in the brain cells just with ADD alone, which seems to come right along with depression and bipolar. My sister has had depression issues all of her life and I suspect if she would see the right doctor, she too would be diognosed with bipolar. She also has ADD. An old friend of mine and my sister sounds the same as you. She too recycles. Since using new MEDS she has come a long way from how she was before the new MEDS. She's now taking a writing class and slowing getting up enough courage to drive her car again. She even sounds much better as time passes. Between my sister and me (I visit with my sister in Michigan) when the phone rings and it's our friend I seem to be the one to answer the phone. I can hear the difference every time I get to talk to her, as we all have something in common and try to learn from one another. You probably should be taking to my daughter. She too has read everything there's to read about bipolor and other mental illnesses. Her 15 year old daughter has many, many other issues to deal with. She's also is complexing to her doctors. How do you over ride depression besides taking MDS I don't have the answer. I know I've been told to keep busy, do exercises, eat a fish a day, you name it. I'm sure you're familiar with that routine. Bipolar is still hard for me to understand. It seems to have so many niches and cracks. With most mental illnesses it's a quessing game. You keep trying new MEDS until youthey get it right. The you can expect adustments in MEDS so they may work even better. My daughter just asked today when we had a bite to eat, "I wonder how other people would handle the things I have to do on a daily basis?" I think you're part of her answer. If you want to do pass the message maybe we can find a way for the two of you to talk ... contact me Take care"

jackie replied: "That is entirely too much medication in my opinion. As you probably well know by now that everyone is different and medications react differently from person to person. My son took every bipolar drug out there from abilify to zyprexa. While in the mental hospital for the seventh time in one year, my son met his girlfriend who had more what you have. After a long trial and error period, lamictal and seroquel is what she is taking. Did you ever try that combination. There are limitless combinations of drugs you can take. Your combination is NOT working. I suggest you start from the beginning. You are already on the lamictal so, no doubt, you ramped up slowly. Talk to your pdoc about limited your drug usage. Klonopin is usually prescribed to get to sleep but with that combination of drugs, I wouldnt think you would have any problems sleeping. You dont say how many milligrams of each drug. They prescribe different amounts of drugs for different illnesses. So the dosage is very important in getting an accurate diagnosis. My question to you is have you ever tried seroquel and lamictal? What was your reaction? Good luck. I wish you the very best in getting the answers you so desperately ask for."

is anyone on these bipolar meds and these diagnoses? i'm on neuronton 3 times a day, strattera 3 times a day, limictal 1 time a day and trazodone 2 at night. my problem is that if i take the limictal and trazodone i can't sleep. and i really don't see how they are helping me at all. i'm sleepy all day and very mood. i have been diaganosed with bipolar, adhd, personality disorder with self-defeating, schiziod, negativistic, and borderline personaility and self harming traits. ok all this labeling makes me feel like i'm a nut. and i don't understand any off it. can you please help me

leavemebe_11 replied: "I'm so sorry you're dealing with so much. HOPEFULLY, you will find someone who can concentrate on one or two of those traits and treat you for those. If it helps, I'm on neurontin too--3 times a day and I also take meds for Cholesterol and sleep...However, they are no big deal to me anymore. Oh yeah, and I was diagnosed with symptoms that "mimicked" bipolar and I'm a skitzoid. ^_^ *hugs you*"

Nikki replied: "I was on Trazodone for sleeping but it didnt work and it also gave me bad migraines. Seroquel is good for sleep."

Gina Karicas K replied: "It sounds like your dosage of lamictal is too strong because you are unable to sleep even after taking trazadone. I take elavil. It works 3 ways. Its and antidepressant, a pain killer and a sleep aid. I take it at night before bed. Prior to that I went through and ABC of various drugs. They all made me feel very strange and seemed to just add to my emotional state a lot of confusion."

Trazodone and Abilify? Today I was prescribed Trazodone to help me sleep and Abilify to help with my anger/bipolar. Did you like the outcome you got?..and what were some of your side affects? Thank you for the responses.

Mitchell W replied: "There are side effects of Abilify. If i were you i would buy the generic version to save some money. Abilify is so expensive!!! Side effects that you should report to your doctor or health care professional as soon as possible: allergic reactions like skin rash, itching or hives, swelling of the face, lips, or tongue breathing problems confusion feeling faint or lightheaded, falls increased hunger or thirst increased urination joint pain muscles pain, spasms problems with balance, talking, walking restlessness or need to keep moving seizures suicidal thoughts or other mood changes trouble swallowing uncontrollable head, mouth, neck, arm, or leg movements unusually weak or tired Side effects that usually do not require medical attention : blurred vision constipation headache nausea, vomiting trouble sleeping weight gain The side effects of trazodone might be found here, "

Bipolar or not? Is it possible that I was misdiagnose. I am currently taking lexapro Trazodone abilify do any of this interact with the other? I do think I have some of the symtoms but I have also had a hard life When does it become Bipolar and when is it just a hard life?

SKG R replied: "Try Meditation."

dynamite136 replied: "Well i dont know if you have looked into it or not, but i think therapy is probably a good idea.Bi polar includes alot of symptoms including depression, anger, mood swings. If you start seeing a therapist they can help you unload some baggage from your past, plus they can give a more accurate diagnosis.I know its hard, hang in there."

Hans B replied: "Well, its hard to believe a doctor would diagnose you without you showing the symptoms. I have several friends who are bipolar, and they really ARE. Meaning they sometimes don't sleep for 3 or 5 days, tell me that Pearl Jam is coming to take them on tour with them, or that they have secret ninja powers and can communicate with animals through hand signals and eye contact. If you've ever done anything that outlandish, then you may really have it. I tend to trust doctors, but thats me. Good luck, and whatever you do, TAKE YOUR MEDICATION!!!!"

jessica lopez replied: "your always gonna be bipolar and that is life, i have taken lexapro, trazadone, abilify, buspar and seriquill all at the same time I never had any interactions but everyone is different. i dought you were misdiagnosed as a matter afact there may be more to it. i know your confused but know that your doing the right thing getting help. are you or have you ever been suicidal? i have many times and depression goes along with it also. as i get older i find that its a little easier to deal with. sometimes its harder. just keep your comunication open with someone you trust. hope this rambling helps alittle..."

jefro replied: "Johanny GET OFF THE LEXAPRO. They gave me the same crap your taking and all that together will make you forget your name and address. Yes sometimes life is hard and some a---hole has a name for it like I have a name for them. The tulips grow just a little to high and thick when you take all that like the trazodone. I truly hope your life gets more in control and I pray that you stop the drugs."

tlc replied: "I think the main point is to have a good working relationship with your doctor. If you dont think that you have enough control with meds you are on talk to your doc. If you think it is too much talk to your doc. I have bipolar and I am one of the lucky ones, but I also have a good working relationship with my doc, therapist, talk therapist and my family. You need a good suppost system to help you with it. but whatever you do dont go off on the meds. talk to your doc."

srasaenz3406 replied: "Having a hard life may make bipolar disorder more difficult to deal with, but it doesn't cause the problem. It's probably safe to assume that you were diagnosed correctly but if you have questions you should seek a second medical opinion. You might want to ask your dr. about the Lexapro. My understanding is that SSRIs can sometimes cause more rapid cycling."

Dark Star replied: "These are the same questions I asked myself when my son was diagnosed. I think that life has its ups and downs. Bipolar is when those ups and downs interfere with your life. Bipolar has so many different symptoms, educate yourself about them. Also read everything you can about your meds. This may help you feel more secure about your diagnosis. If you have serious doubts remember that drs make mistakes too. There is no shame in getting a second opinion."

HELP!! trazodone and schizoaffective disorder? I was diagnosed with Schizoaffective Disorder Bipolar Type & my doctors have put me on Celexa, Trazodone & Lexapro. I do not like taking these medications and I do not know why. I pretend like I do, but in reality refuse to take them. Why am I doing this? The Trazodone I just don't like it. It makes me feel like I want to lay down and sleep all day sometimes. Other times when I take it I can go and go for days. Why is this? Also, I have to take two a day and I'm on the 150 mg. Any information would be greatly appreciated. I am only 18. Is there another medicine that would better suit me?

Scott P replied: "wow dude, you should get another opinion (another doc)."

repoclosing replied: "Trust your body to tell you what is happening. If you have psychotic episodes you need to keep the fire out for a while."

guy fawkes!!! replied: "talk to your doctor about it but if you have to find another one..."

Cassie T replied: "Your reaction to the Trazdone means it's not working very well. The feeling of "being able to go for days and days" is not something that Trazadone causes. It's breakthrough mania, most likely. It depends on how severe your schizo problems are, and what type of bipolar you have. If you don't have severe mania, Lamictal is one of the best bipolar drugs around. It doesn't cause the "zombie" feeling that most bipolar drugs do, and it is so much gentler on your body and mind. However, it does not offer very much protection from mania if your manic phases are full-blown and severe. As far as your schizo symptoms, you have to decide whether or not you can live with them. I know people who can, but only through much personal hardship and effort. At the end of the day, I can't tell you what med or other approach will work for you. Only you and your shrink can decide that. I can simply tell you that if you don't think your meds are making you better, then you shouls raise the issue and try something else."

gmonte33 replied: "There's often a fine line between bipolar disorder and bipolar schizoaffective disorder. The distinction is important. Often schizoaffective disorder requires maintenance treatment with antipsychotics (usually along with antidepressants and/or mood-stabilizers). People with bipolar disorder, on the other hand, usually only need antipsychotics for a short period should they suffer a severe manic or psychotic depressive episode. Celexa and Lexapro are SSRI antidepressants. Trazodone is an antidepressant that also has anti-anxiety effects. Since you have the bipolar type of schizoaffective disorder I'm very surprised your doctor hasn't prescribed a mood-stabilizer (such as lithium carbonate or valproic acid). I would talk to your doctor about replacing one of the antidepressants (probably Trazodone since you have problems with it) with a mood-stabilizer."

Anyone on or ever tried Invega for Bipolar? I actually asked this question, but with a different title today but didn't get any response. I was hoping to find some answers this way. Sorry for the repeat. I was diagnosed bipolar with anxiety/panic disorder w/agoraphobia a few years ago. This past January, I had another episode and have been out of work since. That episode led to another round of trial and error, tweaking and re-tweaking of meds. Finally found a cocktail that seemed to be working that consisted of Trazodone; Clonidine; Topomax; Lamictal; Wellbutrin and Celexa. Well, early last week I knew my mania was starting up again. By Thursday I wasn't sleeping. I've had 9 hours sleep since then...but yea, I'm running around like a mad woman. Saw the doc last night and she confirmed (what I already knew) I was hypomanic. Because of my devastating crashes, she put me on another medication...Invega. Has anyone ever taken this? It's like Risperadal w/out the side effects. It has been approved to treat Schizophrenia, but has not been approved yet to treat Bipolar. Anyone had any success? As much as I love being happy, energizer bunny girl...I dread the crash and am hoping this med will quell the mania and make the crash less painful. Thanks

ucrags84 replied: "Hi, have you asked your doctor about Depakote? I have used it to great success. The only issue is getting the right dosage, otherwise it doesn't seem to be too effective. That was my experience at least. I was under-dosed and my moods were under control about 50-60% of the time, which was a big improvement. With the right dosage, now it's like 70-85% under control, which is good enough for me. Hope that helps."

on 1000mg Depakote, 20mg Paxil and.75 mg xanax a day. Dr added upto 100mg trazodone to sleep? too much? Also I am Bipolar, newly diagnosed after 20 years of panic attacks and depression and insomnia. also sort of scared of the trazodone, hears it may have bad side effects. wondering mostly about ppl's experiences with this drug or combo of drugs. of course i know its strictly advise and not a medical oppinion.

sweet sue replied: "Trazadone does makeyou sleepy and the dosage ranges you describe are normal. Bipolar is trial and error to get to the right combo. Sometimes it takes along time. Sometimes ou can be pretty stable and then for some reason get off balance and have to start juggling meds again. Good luck."

jessnluv69 replied: "my god thats alot well i was on depakote and trazodone as well with paxil and this bilifie one pretty much my experience was awful i to have similar things i have bipolar, PTSD, sever depression, sever anxioty and boarderline personality disorder and many others i just went hay wires on all those meds i fealt like a crazy person i got really fat to it sucked so i stopped all my meds after talking to me doctor i fealt like they were making me crazy always giveing me meds and switching them on me so i asked for a reevaluation because disorders can subside some after a period of time and if your being treated meds councling etc i stayed of the rest of those pills and later discovered i could cope with most of my issues i do still have my big ups and downs but i was tired of the amount maybe if you feel like its a bit much you should talk to your doctor get reevaluated you might find you dont need so many or you might find you need more but good luck"

M.C. Screwdriver replied: "when i was a kid (i am 19 now so not to long ago) my mother was convinced something was wrong with me. i have been on almost every medication out there inculding all of the above. 1000mg of depakote seems like alot, but if u have been on it for a while you may have developed a tolerance and need more in your system. Trazadone is not a bad medicine however the side effects can be bad, i would suggest listening to ur doctor and giving it a try, if u have bad side effects, call him, tell him, u can stop at any time. if u are really concerned about your doctors judgement get a second opinion or find a new doctor. talk to him about lessening them or slowly weening yuou off one of the meds if its still a concern. I don't know you and i am not a doctor, so i can't give you any real medical opinion, but the best thing u can do, is maintian open conversation with your doctor, keep a log on how u feel, or the new effects you notice, and if necessary get a second opinion. you know yourself but your not a doctor, thats why u need to make sure your doctor is listenming to you. also make sure there are no dangers if u need to stop one immediately, some of the meds, like depakote, need to be weened off of."

jsplat24 replied: "is this all prescribed by 1 doctor? sounds like they have been adding things over a long period of time without taking anything away. perhaps you should get a second opinion. i have used anti-depressants before, but never longer than a year or so, and only when i was very depressed due to circumstances in my life (death of a family member for example). it is my opinion that they should not be depended upon for long term stability. when you take away the ability to experience your feelings, you take away your ability to learn to cope with them as well. i wish you luck!"

Spider in the Salt replied: "That is a lot. With a change of medicine you could probably fight it, with twice as less medications. Try Lamactil first off -- it aids depression and promotes sleep. For the Bipolar, you could stay on Depakote -- but Topamax or Lithium usually work MUCH better, and can control. Trazadone in my opinion is hell on wheels -- get off that stuff. If you are given the right med combination, sleeping aids should not be need. Try imovane instead for a few weeks, while you adjust to something else. I would say you are certainly throwing a lot of stuff into your body. They had me on similar things, and I found it was just too much for my body to handle; it just made me feel worse. Suffering from Bipolar, I know the cocktails they put you on and it's not lovely. I guess my advice would be this : there are other medicines that can fix more things, so less you have to put in your mouth. Do some research, and talk hand in hand with your psychiatrist."

mary replied: "I've taken Paxil didn't like it however my daughter had good results taking it. I took xanax daily and found that is a super addiction pill. My good doctor help me by getting off that drug Try to get off that pill. My doctor put me on ambilfy for depression. Also Wellbutrion (sp?). Because of a sleep disorder I take Ambien and I sleep like a baby. Getting sleep helped the rest of my overall condition. I had in the past one bad doctor who put me on a long list including the dreaded xanax. My new doctor whom I trust took me off xanax fast as he could. I'm truly thankful. Be careful of certain medicine. The answer is to have someone who really cares to see you're overall metal state and let you know the truth. Such as a good friend or a trusted family member. I wish you all the luck in the world by having a good doctor! Now I'm very healthy and happy and I still take the pills I mentioned. Through a long search for the right doctor I no longer have panic attack or any of the symtoms I had."

mark f replied: "I have taken paxil and had a nightmare time detoxing off of it. Took many benzodiazepines including xanax, valium, temazepam, librium etc and they completely messed up my memory and emotions. They were helpful at the start but over time they messed me up and I went crazy trying to come off of them. I don't go near tranx or sleeping pills and wouldn't touch them with a barge pole. Sorry to be negative but that is my experience. You can read this to learn more."
