Diflucan - Brand vs. Generic? Every time I'm on antibiotics I get a yeast infection. Brand name Diflucan works, but generic Fluconazole doesn't (even though Diflucan is Fluconazole). Can someone explain why? Is it something to do with the fillers/inactive ingredients? Also, I've noticed cranberry pills in the pharmacy. My doctor used to tell me to drink cranberry juice & eat yogurt when I am on antibiotics, but I can't stand either (horrible childhood memories of the stuff being forced down my throat for UTI's). If I started taking cranberry pills would that lower my chances of getting a YI when on antibiotics?

chandra k replied: "no , not if u take cranberry pill u can avoid striel intestine syndrom ( d/t antibiotics normal flora of intestine is decreas ) , so talk about ur yeast infe than u sud go for blood suger first as it's common in diabetics if ur sugar is normal go for high vaginal sweb bcoz we sud identify yeast or fungal & which type it & which antifungal is more sensetive it all possibel after high vaginal sweb than take complet course of antifungal, as with out this u taeks fluconazol ( a antifungal ) u r supressing infe but not irrediating so it relapce, ok , best of luck, that's my view"

HassleBassle replied: "wtf does that answer say?"

S P replied: "cranberry pills are to keep from getting UTIs. Yogurt works when you are on an antibiotic and don't want a yeast infection. Also those little DanActive drinks work as well."

my pharmachist gave me diflucan 150mg for my itchy vagina, is it save? or is it too strong medicine? I went to the pharmacy to get some vagisil cream but they dont have any, instead they recommend me to take 1 diflucan tablet. I didnt go to doctor because i dont think the itch is something serious. the last couple of months i've been treated for urinary tract infections, now that the infection is gone i had an itchy vagina for almost a week now, and it gets even more itchy especially after i wash up with vaginal antiseptic, i havent take the diflucan because i learn it is quiet a strong medicine that might affect kidney and liver. please, would somebody advice me, thanks a lot

ens_imp replied: "Its safe. Its a one time tablet and all of the antifungals like that are usually only problematic with longer term exposure. The question in my mind though is whether this is really a yeast infection which is what the diflucan is meant to treat. If you haven't had the doc take a look at it, it might be worthwhile just so you know what you are treating."

keentotravel89 replied: "it works and i didnt have any probs when i used it- but if u are on any kind of medication dont take it-- the antibiotics kills the good stuff in it- and it wont work. xo"

dlmissinglink replied: "Read this article. it gives you all the info you will need regarding Diflucan."

Cherry Blossom replied: "That's the safe amount. You take one the day he gives it to you, and it will clear up the vaginal yeast infection that comes with taking antibiotics. The reason why you get more itchy after using a vaginal antiseptic is because you are disturbing the natural flora of the vagina, and killing off the good bacteria that live there. Diflucan is safe to take. It's an antifungal that will make a huge difference with the itching that comes with the yeast infection from the antibiotics."

Amber J replied: "Now that your UTI has gone, keep drinking plenty of water to keep flushing out your kidneys and also drink cranberry juice. Take the tablets and just keep drinking. The recommended dose is put on there for a reason and therefore if you stick to that dose, it should not harm you. If the itching is still there, try some canesten cream, it is for thrush and kills the bad bacteria that causes the itching and discharge."

Joan H replied: "diflucan is used to treat a yeast infection. A yeast infection can be caused by antibiotics. It's safe to take, but I can't imagine a pharmacy giving you that, without a prescription. Unless they have recently taken that off of the list, for prescription use only. Go ahead and take it, if it isn't better in about 3 days, it means that you don't have a yeast infection. If you want to make sure, before you take the pill, they now have an over the counter test kit for yeast infection. You could do your own test first to make sure. But if you have been on antibiotics, you most likely do have a yeast infection"

Dee S replied: "Diflucan is a GREAT medication! I take it whenever the Doc puts me on any antibiotic to PREVENT a yeast infection. It usually takes a day or 2 to take effect - but is better (in my opinion) than those messy creams etc. If you NEED something for the discomfort before that takes effect - you CAN use the over the counter creams (Monistat etc) for a day or so as well. Good luck!"

Has anyone in the US used a canadian pharmacy? I have a yeast infection URGH I know, however my doc is on vacation for another 10 days and i dont want to show my bits to the lady doctor who is covering him, the drug is DIFLUCAN or the generic version... anyone recommend anywhere to get it, and why is this just not available otc.. this would save people money hassle and pain!

hottie3381 replied: "walmart has some 4 dollar perscriptions for different problems...check if they have one for ur issue"

Lea replied: "Fluconazole (Diflucan) is an anti-fungal. Like all potent drugs in its class, it is too risky for it to be an OTC. There are yeast infection OTC medications. You can use Monistat, and things like that. However, I don't know what is OTC in Canada. In some Canadian provinces, pharmacists can prescribe."

Recurrent yeast infections- causes & treating my boyfriend? I have been suffering from recurrent yeast infections for a little under a year now, I've had 4 since last March. One of them came on after taking antibiotics for strep throat but the other 3 there was no apparent reason. I can't get in to see my doctor because I go to school a couple hours away from the office but she called in a prescription for diflucan to a pharmacy nearby for me. I've been reading about recurrent yeast infections and was wondering if perhaps my boyfriend could be passing it back to me without knowing it. My question is, would it be worth it to have him take the diflucan pill as well just in case? And if that's not the case, what else could be causing my recurrent yeast infections? They're so annoying! Thanks so much!

Greshnab replied: "assuming you are sanitary and staying clean.. is your bf roaming on you?? most times when i have seen girls with that problem it was from a bf that had been playing around.."

10S NE 1? replied: "Call your doctor and/or nurse and ask. They can tell you if your BF is infecting you. Antibiotics always give me a yeast infection. Diflucan helps. I seem to get a discharge a couple days after being with my BF, too. But the doc says I don't have an infection. I just make sure the doc gives me a prescription for Diflucan that I can renew a few times."

odat135 replied: "These can last off an on for a long time! It is possible he is passing it back to you. I suggest refraining from sex for a few weeks, taking diflucan, drying well after a shower, no baths, laying in front of a floor fan, changing underwear several times during the day and wash them with bleach, stay away from antibiotics if possible, do not use any baby powder, and use tampons to help dry inside leaving them in only for a short time. I also suggest you ask your doctor about Pelvic Inflammatory Disease."

hardscore replied: "Hey bebe i suffered with jock itch for years and numerious things what works taking selenium, zinc, folic acid 3 times a day you get recurring yeast infections because your anemic after all those antibotics take iron, b12 vitimin e for itching 1000mg. this the real cure for yeast infections took years of research to find this.............."

Heeeeeeelp! Yeast is taking over my life...? My poor two week old little sweetie has a yeasty diaper rash, I have a yeast infection, and now my boobs are going bad on me. Particularly the left one. What can I do? We have one car and I can't drive to my doctor today! It's bad enough having to leave the house by myself with the baby and I have no relatives closeby, KWIM? Oh my gosh... Anyway, I have to head to the pharmacy tonight to pick up freakin' baby vitamins so I'm thinking of asking my dad who is a doctor to call me in some diflucan to the same pharmacy? Or should I buy some gentian violet? I'm wary of the gentian violet personally, but I'd like to know what works. My baby's mouth looks fine, knock on wood. :-o help Sorry, I failed to mention I already have the Nystatin ointment for her bum, which is clearing up slowly. Yea, I've been using the nystatin cream on my nipples, maybe it will do the trick. Hope so! Ugh

Lorenzo's mommy replied: "ASK YOUR DAD HES A MD"

Nina replied: "http://www.kellymom.com/newman/06gentian_violet.html My baby and I had the thrush a few months ago. GV really works and its fast too. Of course you cannot put it on her bottom, so she will need to be seen. All the best-"

CLICK 2 $AVE! replied: "Are you nursing? They usually use nystatin cream for yeast infection on breasts because it's safe for babies. It's also good for baby's bum."

lovejoypeace replied: "the baby will need a percription called nystatin cream she might end up getting the mouth one latter on mine did and for you just get monastate 7 good luck"

Nurse JC replied: "IF you have a yeast infection on your breast then the baby needs to be treated at the same time if you are breastfeeding. Have you been taking antibiotics lately?"

Jillian replied: "i've heard grape fruit seed extract works wonderfully"

lo replied: "i had a very bad breast yeast infection.. dont just use the cream.. it didnt take it away for me.. trust me.. get the oral nystatin pills and continue to give your baby the liquid nystatin. mine went away wihtin 3 days i think.. cleared up great. on the oral pills..and baby got better too.. also milk supply went down when i had yeast infection too... it will go up once its better. keep feeding her off you it wont hurt her."

mane replied: "probly infection,,,seek professional medical help immediately"

fordkiller2005 replied: "TMI !!!!"

mac replied: "It sounds like a sexually transmitted disease- she should definitely go back to see a doctor - a gynecologist to be exact. They can culture the sores and find exactly what type of infection she has. Tell her NOT to touch the sores and if she does inadvertently when going to the bathroom- to scrub her hands with antibacterial soap."

tara_linn replied: "Possibly in-grown hairs, becoming infected. Does ur cousin shave? She should stop, for awhile if she does. Her razor may be too dull. She may have a persistant staph infection. She should go to Planned Parenthood and get tested for STD's; yeast infection; eczema. For now, tell her to wash herself 3 times a day with a gentle, anti-bacterial soap, Dove comes to mind, and apply (this may sound strange...) PLAIN, organic, unsweetened yogurt, just a little. It will cool the itch and soothe. Tell her to drink LOTS of water, and to wash her hands OFTEN, and not to handle herself unless her hands are clean..."

lita ozzy bear replied: "your cousin needs to go to a doctor who can help. She needs to go to a female doc. If she can't afford payment she needs to look to going to a clinic who gets paid based on her income and can bill her."

help with yeast infection medicines? anyone ever had problems with vagistat (tioconazole)? i took it and it did nothing. i felt better at first but a day later i had to run back to the store and get monistat because i felt worse than before i took anything. the monistat worked because its a different medicine (miconazole). but after the vagistat i felt so bad I had to take a painkiller to get to the pharmacy.i don't know how they can sell this if it doesn't work. but maybe i'm just allergic or something. by the way, why isn't diflucan available over the counter yet? i took the painkiller because i couldn't stop itching long enough to get to the store. it was making me miserable.

Doni replied: "If you are hurting (not from the itching). I think you should visit a doctor. It could be something worse!"

wrtrchk replied: "I would NEVER use Vagistat, it seemed to make matters worse. Monistat works well, and try eating yogurt or liquid form acidopholis (spelling?) which could be found in GMC or Vitamin World."

Joeng replied: "You can use betadine to wash your infected area."

patricia b replied: "try canesten cream and pessary if you are in the uk ask for canesten due that works for me or go to your doctors for something"

? replied: "I live with yeast and I have never heard of Vagistat. Also, get the one for 3-7 days. The one day treatment is NOT enough."

moe replied: "you should be careful . If you have recurring infections you could be a diabetic. High blood sugar causes the yeast to go crazy.I have taken acidophilus , a herb, for 2 yrs. and I have not had a yeast infection since I started taking it. I did not even get one while taking antibiotics. I take 2 pills every night."

I am tired of chronic yeast infection!? every month b4 and after my periods i have it. somtimes mild some times bad. every month running to the pharmacy for over the counter some work some dont.. those that worked once dont work another time. doc precribed diflucan but it takes 3 hrs for me too see her to get the prescribtion.. some one pls tell me how to get rid of this problem once and for all! ps. tried herpbal pullina as well didnt work

caffsans replied: "perhaps you are using the wrong sanitary protection=try cleaning the area after each change and dont use perfumed soaps=hope this helps"

mlgable replied: "You need to find out what is causing your chronic infections. If you are sexually active be sure your partner is tested as he may be reinfecting you. Also be sure you eat plenty of yogurt every day with live active cultures or take acidophillus capsules daily to help prevent yeast infections. Check the tags on your underwear to be sure they are 100% cotton. Do not sleep in your underwear. Do not douche or use soaps in the vaginal area. Avoid tub baths. Also since your doc is aware of your chronic infections why not just call and speak to her/his nurse and the doc can call you in a prescription to your pharmacy."

pebby577 replied: "I have a history of alot of yeast infections. I can tell you if you eat yougart on a daily basis it will help keep you from getting the yeast infections. I found the product called AZO for yeast I take a couple of pills a day and Im fine."

gmabell replied: "Eat yogurt as often as you can....at least once a day. It works. I was getting them all the time due to tight jeans and doctor put me on yogurt, three times a day. Took about 4 days and this was 20 years ago; I have not had a yeast infection since, even after taking antibiotics! Good luck and God bless"

Diane T replied: "try oil of oregano it works great on getting rid of to much yeast. Make sure you get the pills, the liquid is nasty"

heysuzlovesu replied: "Any diabetics in your family? If so wouldn't hurt to get that checked out. Yeast infections are very common among diabetics."

Marianne N replied: "if you have a rx from your provider you can"

becky b replied: "yes in n.c. you can"

craigslilsister replied: "If you are getting it RX you can. If it is OTC then you don't need the card."

Plz help; chronic yeast infections from switch in birth control pills? Hello, I have had a yeast infection on and off for a month and a half now. I believe I have figured out the cause. My pharmacy recently switched my birth control pills (ortho tricyclerin lo) that I was on for 8 months with NO problems whatsoever to tri lo sprintec. Within 3 weeks after beginning the new kind of pills I got a yeast infection and got a script for diflucan. This cleared it up. Then I started my period and the week after, when I began taking the pills that contain the hormones again, I got another yeast infection. I took diflucan again and it went away for a week and now its back. I am very frustrated because these yeast infections keep coming back. I also am afraid to have sex because I never know when its going to flair up again and I do not want to pass it to my boyfriend, since we do not use condoms. I know that he does not have it and is not passing it back to me because I got the yeast infection back again already and have not even had sex with him since clearing up the last one. Why would this be happening from the switch in birth control pills? Could I be allergic? (Also, I am 100% positive that these are yeast infections because I had a full std screen 2 weeks ago and I am completely clean.)

Medic Daniela S replied: "yes! it is possible and sometimes it can happen!! + if you have yeast infection then you must get rid of it as soon as it is possible!!! if you really want to get rid of yeast infection then you must follow these tips - they worked for me: 1) Eat yogurt!!!! It contains helpful bacteria (live cultures, including acidophilus and bifidus) that destroy yeast. Use only plain yogurt with active cultures. 2) Douche with a solution of 1 to 3 tbsp. vinegar in a quart of water. Repeat once a day while having symptoms, but no longer than a week. 3) Decrease or eliminate sugar and sugary foods. Sugar promotes yeast growth. 4) Use a garlic clove as a suppository. Garlic contains a natural anti-fungal agent. 5) also you should use some herbal treatment. In that case Yeastrol is really good (probably the best) product that gets rid of yeast infection comparatively fast and makes you feel more confident knowing that it wont reappear again! And of course it is better if you use full course (5 months - if I remember correctly). For me it worked very fast + I dont get yeast infections anymore (almost 2 years) ..."
