Doctors/Nurses Answer Only: I have Strep Throat (almost certain) will CEPHALEXIN work as an antibiotic? I was given CEPHALEXIN 500 MG Capsule Tev and IBUPROFEN for my tooth but just got Strep Throat (tounge is white, sore throat, fever for 2-3 days, drowsey, body aches) anyways, will this work to take it to get rid of strep? I have no Penicillin

tlbrown42000 replied: "This will kill strep. ."

SAMI replied: "The cephalosporins differ from penicillins in the structure of the bicyclic ring system. Cephalexin has a D-phenylglycyl group as substituent at the 7-amino position and an unsubstituted methyl group at the 3-position. Therefore it is not effective for Streptococcal sore throat."

Sean P replied: "CEPHALEX is often prescribed for peolpe who experience penicillin hypersensitivity and isn't usually offered as an initial course of action. The Cephalosporin present disrupt synthesis of the peptidoglycan wall of gram positive organism such as streptococcal pharyngitis. However, you should get a swab done because the strain present in your throat may be viral, in which a new course of action must be taken. Ibuprofen is used to reduce fever and pain, and i'd recommend doing salt gargles as well."

slik replied: "Eat some fresh plain yogurt. lots of probiotic bacteria (with carbs like bread, pasta, or rice). Your antibiotic should work, but if it doesn't the yogurt will work for sure (it might take a little longer, but it'll work). This is the way to kill bacteria that have developed immunity to antibiotics. As far as the antibiotic you describe, they're all the same ..."

The Neurosurgeon replied: "First, yes Cephalexin will destroy staphylacoccal bacterium, Secondly, i agree with one of the above answers, go to your doctor and get a swab taken, it may not be bactrial and you yourself cannot diagnose yourself with a certain type of bacteria, Thirdly, the antibiotics were given for your tooth, so don't use them for anything but that, they will not kill both at the same time, you should see your doctor about your infection and they will prescribe you something for it. Cephalaxin is not usually given as a first line treatment, have you had any other antibiotics before this?"

W W D replied: "If you have a ten day supply and you're going to be taking it for your dental infection anyway, then that's fine. It's a perfectly reasonable alternative. It's less certain that you have strep, though, as a lot of viruses cause the same syndrome. Also, the antibiotics don't more than a few hours' difference in how quickly you get well, even if it is strep. The antibiotics, for a full ten-day course, are prescribed to prevent rheumatic fever, so you'll do yourself a favor by adjusting your expectations. The ibuprofen, though, along with some saline gargles, will help. Also, if the cephalexin was prescribed at some other time and you aren't supposed to be taking it now for the tooth, you shouldn't self-prescribe but get an exam. Your score according to Centor criteria, perhaps along with a throat swab, would be the guidance for whether you should take antibiotics for the sore throat."

Strep throat, antibiotics, eye swollen shut? Go back to doctor? I got diagnosed with strep throat Sunday. I started taking cephalexin that night from an urgent care center. The next day, I got really congested and went to my regular doctor who said it looked like I also had a sinus infection as well. She changed the antibiotic to clarithromycin because she said that worked better on strep. I started taking that yesterday. I had an allergic reaction to penicillin a year ago when I took it for strep but it was just a rash. The doctor said to try to "tough out" any side effects from the clarithromycin if I got them. I thought maybe that meant like stomach problems, but this is different. I can't put my contacts in either eye and my right eye was swollen shut when I woke up this morning. I rinsed them out and took allergy medicine so the swelling is improved but I still can't put my contacts in. Would you go back to the doctor even if she said to "tough out" any side effects? She got her license in India. Thank you. I found out it is an eye infection stemming from the sinus infection an strep throat!! It is a good thing I went in.

anne c replied: "I'd certainly at least call...that wasn't the sort of reaction she meant to "tough out" I'm sure. Glad you thought to take the antihistamine. Call as soon as the office opens...or call the answering service if you're feeling worse...or go to the ED if you start swelling again anywhere. don't take another pill until you talk to doc again and explain reaction."

Tigger replied: "Sheesh! Find a different doctor! 'Tough it out' indeed! Where did that person get a license, a Cracker Jack box? Good luck!"

Andrew Jazz replied: "You definitely need to see a different doctor. Kindly inform your new doctor about your allergies to medicines and food, so he can prescribe the right medications. Good luck! ♥☺♥"

Sydney replied: "go to the emrgency it could be a severe allergic reaction"

It may be stupid, but is it okay to take Cephalexin and DayQuil? I'm on 10 days of Cephalexin 500mg (twice per day) antibiotics for strep throat, which I have for the second time in like 2 months. Both were officially strep throat because my throat was swabbed and it was tested. On top of that, I have a freaking AWFUL cold. Burning sinuses, watering and red eyes, and I think it's "dripping" from my sinuses onto the back of my throat. Which makes my already hurting throat itch/tingle, and that makes me feel like I constantly have to cough. With strep throat, coughing hurts big time. My throat has been so scratchy that I can barely speak, and I have to be able to speak. I work in Retail sales...I have to interact with people. I try to wash my hands often, use Purell, etc. I work in the busiest airport in the world...so I come in contact with thousands upon thousands of people every day. So...my main question, dumb as it may be...am I okay to take DayQuil regularly with Cephalexin antibiotics? I know they're for two different things, but I just wanted to make sure there aren't any hidden drug interactions somehow.

daddyrx replied: "There are no interactions between the two that I am aware of."

EMTChez replied: "Cephalexin interacts with very few other medications (ex. typhoid vaccine, contraceptives). I've personally taken the two together with no adverse effects. Feel better!"

Christopher M replied: "Yes, you can take the 2 with no worries. Get better!"

I have a lot of stinging and some itching all over my vagina? It all started when my boyfriend gave me oral. As soon as it was over, a few minutes later everything down there was VERY itchy. I know the oral triggered it because the itching included my anus... I've had this for about a week and a half and during all this I got my period. My period has been over, but the stinging and some itching hasn't gone away. Also, I'm not sure if this was from my period ( I don't think so), but I've been getting this thick, grey, creamy coating on the inside of my vaginal lips. There is absolutely no bad odor. ** I don't know if this makes sense because it started as soon as the oral was over, but around that time I started taking the antibiotic Cephalexin for strep throat. HELP! Thanks!

mrs. MJ replied: "you should go to a doctor just to make sure what it is.....it sounds like a bacterial infection"

♥ ʝɛɳ ♥ replied: "You likely have a yeast infection. And your bf might, too. You should get Monistat at the drugstore for fastest results. Also start drinking cranberry juice, and eat yogurt regularly. These are natural ways to improve the conditions of your insides to prevent yeast infections, and give you a natural defense."

Sally replied: "Antibiotics can kill certain good bacteria that protect your vagina from bad bacteria. It probably created a vulnerability to certain sugars or bacteria that your boyfriend was carrying around. You probably have a yeast infection as a result. I would take Monistat, and if it doesn't clear up quickly, go to the doctor."

I have strep throat and I'm on antibiotics, but why am I having trouble breathing? I started out with a high fever and it went on for a couple days. I noticed I had a sore throat and it was getting worse. My fever went away, but the sore throat was worse so I went to the doctor. He determined that I had strep throat (without taking a test... I know--I'm upset about it!) and he prescribed Cephalexin twice a day for ten days. I've been on it for 8 days now and I'm not sure when it started, but I've been having a little trouble breathing. I don't have any symptoms like runny nose or anything. My glands are both still swollen and I feel a little pressure on my chest. Can anyone tell me if this is normal or if I should worry? I think my breathing is getting worse. I'm starting to cough because I'm not getting enough air in one breath. Kinda wheezing... Thanks for your future answers :-)

babypleasehelp replied: "I would suggest stop taking the medicine. And call the doctor and tell them the symptoms you are having.. Which doesn't sound normal.. Could be an allergic reaction or something.. i looked up the side affects of the medication if you havnt done so already and heres what i had came upon.. Diarrhea; dizziness; headache; indigestion; joint pain; stomach pain; tiredness. Seek medical attention right away if any of these SEVERE side effects occur when using Cephalexin: Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the mouth, face, lips, or tongue); agitation; confusion; dark urine; decreased urination; fever; hallucinations; red, swollen, or blistered skin; seizures; severe or bloody diarrhea; severe stomach pain or cramps; severe tiredness; unusual bruising or bleeding; unusual vaginal pain, odor, or discharge; yellowing of the eyes or skin."

playgirl_x3_je replied: "Well those sound like common symptoms of a strep throat but check out your symptoms! hope this helps!!"

missDE replied: "I would be back in the doctors office. A few years ago I had a similiar incident and it turned out to be mono. I know also a few other people with the same situation. When you go back they can check your blood and make a more educated decision. And at least they can help you get some pain meds. And if you have been on meds so long without any relief then there is definitely something that needs to be checked! Feel better!"

Why is this strep throat so freaking hard to get rid of?!? (kind of long, sorry)? I'm a poor part-time Retail worker, have no insurance and can't call out very much because I work for a store where I am one of the main workers. Back in March I had strep throat. I went to a CVS MinuteClinic, saw the nurse practitioner. He checked a lot of stuff, swabbed my throat and did a rapid strep test. Positive for strep. He gave me 10 days of antibiotics (Penicillin VK 500mg, taken twice per day). I actually ended up with 15 as I counted the meds later on at home. I took all of them for the 15 day period (pharmacists must have added in a little more to help out, since I had no insurance). My sores were still there even after the meds were gone. Just a few days ago, I tested positive for strep again. Now I'm on 500mg of Cephalexin for 10 days, twice a day. This time it has differed from the last. The last time I had fever, chills, and a horribly sore throat. This time I've had my sore throat, white patches everywhere on my tonsils and throat muscles, near-convulsive chills in previous days (no longer getting chills like that now), high fevers, and also the symptoms of a cold on top of that. Sneezing, coughing, burning sinuses, watery eyes (caused by the patches on my throat seemingly 'pulsing' and making my eyes water and turn very red each time), etc. For the past 3 days, I've had just about no voice...my vocal cords must have junk all in them. Is it true that there are two types of strep throat? Viral and bacterial? I'm not sure what to do now. I'm up writing this at 4:26. I'm off from work for the next two days, thankfully. Taking DayQuil (every 4 hours) and the Cephalexin. If I sit upright, I barely cough. If I lay down, I can't stop coughing. So I basically can't sleep at all. I've spent the better part of 2-3 hours coughing almost straight through, while laying down. Nothing comes up. My throat muscles just keep contracting or something, literally every few seconds. It's the sores on them itching/hurting and making the muscle contract. I pressed on a white patch that looked like a pus-pocket earlier with a q-tip (it's off to the side in the part of my throat further to the front). Where it normally wouldn't gag me due to the location further up...I felt like I was gonna puke after I pressed on it. I have white spots on my tonsils themselves, white spots on either side of my throat and it seems that they go a bit deeper into the deeper edge of my throat. So what should I do now? Obviously I'm still taking my current meds. The white sores have become more defined since I've taken the meds, too. I don't know whether to ask the guy I saw to call me in an extended prescription for Cephalexin that I'm taking now...Penicillin VK that I took before, or what. I just don't know how to get rid of this, and apparently the rapid strep test doesn't tell them what 'kind' of strep throat it is. Suggestions? No "home remedies" please. Every idiot that says "it's just a cold" will be reported (I've seen people post that in other people's questions). It's NOT a cold/allergy/whatever. It's a bit more serious than that. Please do not answer if you do not have sound medical knowledge to answer with a competent response. Thanks. Edit: I've also looked at pictures of tonsilitis...it doesn't look like that, so it has to be strep only. While my strep is 'recurring'...this is only the second time since years and years.

jeffknoesbest. replied: "yes there are 2 types of sore throats , bacterial and viral , and looks to me like you have a viral , but than again who knows. With the viral infection , you must get antibiotics to get rid of them from a doctors."

Martinmm replied: "my daughter went to the doctor for the same .she keeps insisting her tonsils be removed.any way Dr.prescribed penicillin and 400mg motrin[Ibuprofen]"

? replied: "First of all you should not be taking Dayquil and an antibiotic. Take only the antibiotic and if you need something for the cough use Robitussin DM. You are counteracting the antibiotic. And can overdose. Chloraseptic spray or throat lozenges would work too. There are many different types of strep. They really cannot be diagnosed without a culture being taken and grown in a lab. Then they determine what it is and what medicines it is susceptible to for treatment. It is hard to say for sure what you are experiencing other than an extremely low immune system at this time. You need to start making sure you are eating healthy and getting plenty of rest. Soda and smoking, as well as alcohol, can severely reduce your immune system as well as many other things. So get the rest you need and when you are over this I recommend you get on an age appropriate multivitamin."

S@gi replied: "Read Carefully and Do it , If condition is Sever then Start Antibiotic other wise do the 2nd option. 1.Go to Pharmacy and Get the Antibiotic Name Augmentan 500 mg OR Klaracid 750 mg Take Twice a Day for 7 Days for worst situation / 5days normally 2. Also do the Gargils with Hot water and Salt. Take Steam of Hot Water Twice a Day after steam sit inside the room without FAN till you temeprature got normal"

Jennifer V replied: "Strep is not a virus, only a bacteria. A sore throat can be caused by many things, including various viruses, fungus and bacteria. But since you had a culture done, and it was positive, you definitely have the *bacterial strep infection*. Typically, pennicillin is the drug of choice for this. However, Zythromax and Clindamycin are also used for people with amoxicillin allergies. Augmentin is Amoxicillin with an added ingredient to help make it more effective for penicillin resistant germs. Sometimes to effectively get rid of an infection, you will need to take two antibiotics at the same time to completely wipe it out. When your doc does the culture, they can test the strep to see which antibiotic will be most effective for it. If you have had no improvement after taking this new antibiotic for 48 hours, you need to go back to your doc to get something else. You should see a reduction in the white spots as well as reduced fever and chills. Because the bacteria is a very tenacious one, it is very easy to reinfect yourself. You could have picked it up from where you put your toothbrush. Even if you changed your tooth brush, you still put the new one right where the old one went. (It's human nature to put stuff where it goes) You can prevent re-infection by doing a thorough cleaning. Careful with the NyQuil and Day Quil as they both contain acetominaphin (Tylenol) which can harm your liver if too much is ingested. I find Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) to be a more effective pain reliever. Chloraseptic spray is also good, as is gargling with very salty warm water."

Instructor replied: "You will likely need your tonsils removed anyway. Sometimes they become an obsticle for the antibiotics so they get rid of them. Don't worry, you won't miss them."

luvamutt49 replied: "When you take antibiotics, is important to space them out very close to even intervals. You do this because if you wait too long between dosages, the bacteria start growing back and more than likely all will not be killed out with your round of antibiotics. Also, it is very important to take all of the antibiotics. If you stop too soon, especially once you feel better, you will have killed out the weaker bacteria, while the stronger ones keep plugging on. It is very important to get the stronger, hardier ones because if you do not, they will begin to multiply. You will end up with the stronger bacteria as opposed to the weaker ones that died early on. Strep throat is caused my a gram positive bacteria that responds well to penicillin. If you have a history of strep throat there is a good chance of being put on more than one round of antibiotics. It also helps to kill the bacteria if you gargle about 4x day with a 50/50 dilution of hydrogen peroxide or a solution of warm salt water. These solutions physically denature the bacteria. They are also soothing. It is extremely important to keep any flare up of strep throat under control. If not treated, it can lead to acute glomeralanephritis (problably misspelled) and rheumatic fever. Pus pockets are common with Strep Throat. Strep, short for Streptococcus, is a type of bacteria. It is never a virus. You problaby have several things going on at the same time. A good thing to take for coughing is Robatussin that only has the expectorant in it. It breaks up the yuk in the cheast and helps clear out the problem. There is no problem with taking Dayquil with the antibiotics. With the cough medicine, do not get the DM. The DM has the expectorant watered down. The doctor does need a culture to validate the diagnosis. The bacteria does not have to be grown. The test can be done within a few hours of taking the culuture. Thankfully, those days of waiting for this result are past."

Recovering from strep throat for the second time within 1-2 months? I had strep throat at the end of March. I have it again now (confirmed both times by a rapid strep test). I got on antibiotics a lot sooner this time. I was on Penicillin VK 500mg twice a day for 10 days last time. Now I'm on Cephalexin 500mg twice a day for 10 days, because of the recurring case. I have had a lot more cough related to this one than I remember with the first time. Yesterday I had a big mass of bloody phlegm about the size of a quarter come out. I lost half of my voice and became extremely hoarse for all of yesterday. I'm getting it back now, thankfully (I work in Retail sales at Atlanta airport, and it's hard to hit your numbers if you can barely speak...not to mention people think something is wrong with you.) I took a day off from work for the 24-hour contagious period after taking the medicine, but was cleared by the doc to return to work yesterday. I've taken antibiotics for 5 pills now. I was coughing a LOT this morning while trying to sleep, after 4 pills for the past two days. My throat has been itching and tingling, but also hurting so badly in the mornings when trying to sleep. During the day, it doesn't seem to hurt as much. Even before I've brushed my teeth or done anything to numb the pain in my throat. Being up and awake makes it hurt 'less' for some reason. But why? Changed my toothbrush, got a new pillow, washed sheets and covers.

kk replied: "I used to get it like that they eventually took out my tonsills and it quit coming back"

bre replied: "it hurts less when you are awake because you are using your throat more/ eating/drinking/trying to talk/yawning.. whatever.. at night its like having an insane workout and waking up soar.. kind of the same effect on the throat when you have strep. make sure you finish out your antibiotic the full 10 days, it's the only way to rid of it.. it probably never was fully out of the system the last time you had it. after you are done with medicine, get your tonsils checked out."

roxxygrrl13 replied: "I just got over strep and have had it several times. They gave me the Zpack-2 pills the first day and then one a day for next four days. It cleared it right up. What you have does not sound like strep. Lying down does make your sinuses drain and makes your throat hurt/coughing occur but if you dont feel better soon go to a new doc."

iluvmyman replied: "Is it possible that someone else may be reinfecting you? I mean like sharing plates, glasses, silverware or possibly kissing someone who has but doesn't know they have it? :) This could be the reason you are getting reinfected hon. If thats not it then I have no idea, lol I am not a doctor."

Sores from strep throat seem to get bigger, but seem to itch and hurt at the same time? I have a "pulsing" feeling in the back of my throat. Been on meds for about 5 days now (Cephalexin 500mg twice a day). It's either something dripping from my nose onto the back of my throat...or, it's (what I think is more probable) the actual sores themselves making the muscles back there "pulse" in my throat. The issue with that is it makes my eyes turn really red and water, and makes me feel like I have to cough. When your throat feels raw...that's the last thing you want to do. I may have a cold on top of my strep throat (I've had other symptoms like a runny nose, stuffy nose, burning sinuses, etc.) I've taken DayQuil for two days, every 4 hours or so. Looking at the back of my throat...the sores are a lot larger and they hurt a lot. I'm halfway through with my prescription that was given at a CVS MinuteClinic nurse practitioner. I feel like I may have to call and tell them in a few days that I need another prescription for a bit more antibiotics to clear it up completely. 10 days doesn't seem to do it for most people, and mine wasn't a very advanced case. In fact, they said the strep test was "barely pink/red." What's the deal with the sores? Do they get bigger first (they are like canker sores, but not canker sores) and then go away? And no...it's not just a bad cold. Tested positive for strep.

Hi! replied: "its called drainage...(goop!) lol you probably just have a bad head cold (has sore throat and coughing....stuffed up head) it can def cause your eyes to have gunk coming out and watery... thats if you are really stopped up.. i have HORRIBLE allergies and they are so bad that my nasal passages i dont think have ever been completley cleaned out my whole life. the eye doctor even said that that is the reason why my eyes are always watery and have gunk in them ...(not noticable unless i get it out ahha nasty huh?) just go to the doctor again and say you have gotten worse."

How can I make myself stop coughing? I have strep throat/tonsilitis. White spots on the back of my throat and tested positive the other day. This is my second recurrence within a couple of months, but much worse this time. It started out this time as flu symptoms on top of strep throat/tonsilitis. My antibiotics are not working. It's also not the same antibiotic that I took last time...the doc prescribed it separately for a reason. I've taken 6 (out of 10) days of them exactly as I was directed. They seem to not be working at all. At night I have "coughing fits" where I literally cough every 5-15 seconds multiple times, for hours at a time. My throat itches. These freaking spots are causing my throat to itch and the muscles to do weird things. I have an extremely hoarse voice - my vocal chords seem partially paralyzed and full of phlegm or something in them, and I think that's also causing me to cough. I've tried over the counter cold medicines, cough drops, home remedies like hot tea, spoonfuls of honey, cold things like ice cream, etc. I'm going to try to get my antibiotics changed tomorrow. This Cephalexin isn't working worth a crap. I've been sick for 5-7 days now. My throat has only gotten worse, and so has my cough and voice. My voice is starting to barely improve now. Has anyone else dealt with this monster? I don't know if it's bacterial or viral or what it is...but it has made me miserable. I've never had something so bad that I couldn't stop coughing for hours at a time, literally every 5-15 seconds while trying to sleep at night. It's not from a stopped up nose. It's the infection in my vocal cords and/or the infection on my throat causing it, I think.
