Bhman22 replied: "Firstly, if you are on that much Effexor XR, you may want to consider switching medicines anyways. Effexor is known for being a horrible medicine to come off, with many withdrawal problems. But, what is the Effexor being prescribed for? Depression or ADD. I have been prescribed it for ADD, and if it is for that, you may want to consider switching to a stimulant. Stimulants, like amphetamine and dextroamphetamine are used not only for ADD, but also short-term obesity. If you do not want to consider switching medicines, I would speak with your psychiatrist and see what they can do."
kennymelkids replied: "my mom was on effexor and it made her gain a lot of weight plus it started making her hear things after a while of taking it, like loud sounds and whooshing noises, the dr switched her med. and it's working a lot better plus she's already lost 5 pounds, see your dr. about changing the medication."
How do you lose weight on Effexor or other SSRI? Anyone have success with this? Have been on these meds for over ten years and will most likely always have to take them. I've tried working out an hour a day with a 1200 cal/day diet and only lost 3 lbs in a month.
Now I'm off depakote and only taking my effexor every 3 days will I lose weight? I put on 60lbs with depakote and effexor, now I'm off I hope I'll lose some weight, is this normally the case?
I was on 1000mg Depakote and 250mg Effexor
Tara J replied: "Many people actually lose weight or maintain their weight on Effexor so it's likely your weight gain was caused by Depakote. You really need to seek advice from your doctor because it's not usual to take Effexor only once every 3 days. Effexor has a relatively low half-life and must be taken multiple times per day. Even Effexor XR only lasts about 24 hrs. You should start to experience withdrawal by the first day after each Effexor dose. If you're trying to taper off the Effexor, you're going about it all wrong. You're supposed to gradually reduce the mg of each dose as opposed to increase the time between doses."
Did anyone ever gain weight on Effexor XR. Was it hard to lose it? I gained about 23 lbs after taking Effexor. I stopped taking it about a year ago. I'm now back down to what I weighed before, but it was so tough to lose that weight. Did anyone else have the same problem? The doctors all say you are not really supposed to gain more than a few pounds on it if any at all. Anyone know why it makes you gain weight? Sorry, so many questions, but I was just thinking about it.
Thank you in advance!!!
animal gurl replied: "im taking that medication now, and due to my encreased energy, i've actually lost a few pounds. but, different meds, effect everyone differently. it also depends on why you were taking it. if it was for depression, your side effects can differe than if you were taking it for something else. hope it was helpful"
Im ok UR ok replied: "2 be direct YES ~I gained15lbs Y? idk It's just a side effect for some of us I was a little under wt. & the doc wanted me to gain some so he was happy~~not me~ havent lost it yet but yes there are others like U"
HaphazardJoy replied: "The problem with this stuff is that it's nearly impossible to tell what weight you gained because of the medication and what weight you gained just because you were no longer depressed and were enjoying life again. A lot of depressed people eat too much, and a lot eat too little. So, they get healthy again and they start eating appropriately and they gain or lose weight. Is that the drug doing that or just their natural mood promoting their weight? I know for me, Effexor makes me nauseous at first, so I lose weight in the first month or two.
Keep in mind though, the drug doesn't FORCE you to gain or lose weight. If you had sucess taking Effexor to treat your problems, and they come up again in your life, by all means, use the Effexor again instead of testing out the other medications to see if they work for you. You can always adjust your diet and exercise to maintain weight, regardless of the medication's relationship with your appetite."
Jacky.... ( the name is enough ) replied: "I am very sorry for you ."
At what dose did you start losing weight on Effexor xr? I'm on 37.5 right now and am gaining weight.
counterattack replied: "I gained lots of weight on Effexor, but lost weight on Prozac."
Mrs. Steven replied: "Everyone responds differently to all medications. Some people may gain, some lose. i personally lost because of the initial side effects of diarreah and loss of appetite. That began with 37.5..i began losing within that first week. You may be someone who gains weight on it. The important thing to consider if it is helping the depression. Stay active, exercise more, eat right. If it is working on the depression you will have more energy to live a healthy lifestyle then you will see a change. Don't look at it as a weight loss drug."
Vera Gabriele replied: "If you take Effexor you won't be losing weight. I gained weight also and asked my physician.. he told me Effexor is definitely responsible for weight gain...xxx and you are on the lowest available dosage of Effexor...If you don't want to gain weight and continue taking this drug.. you have to watch what you eat a lot more... no junk and no sweets and a balanced diet..5 small healthy meals a day and exercise otherwise you do gain weight on Effexor!!!!"
Allie replied: "Almost all antidepressants have weight gain as a side effect. I believe 20 lbs is the average they say a person gains. Effexor killed my appetite for just a few days when I started it, then I ballooned. I am off of it now, going to a diet center to try to get back to normal size."
Does Effexor XR help you lose weight? My doctor took me off Paxil because she said it was the worst for weight gain, and said that Effexor was best for losing weight.
Anyone out there with personal expericences?
lotus replied: "yeah it doesnt actually help you lose weight
i believe it just suppresses appetite"
Joe replied: "I went on Effexor 4 weeks ago and immediately lost a substantial amount of weight. This is due to a slight suppression of appetite, but also because it causes an increase in urination, which lightens you up since your body is 60% water and a gallon of water weighs 8.8 lbs."
I am stopping Effexor XR. Will I lose the weight it caused me to gain? Or will I have to try extra hard to diet it off. I have gained about 50 lbs while on this med- gained very fast. I am struggling with stopping this med, the side effects were far worse than the neuropathy it was supposed to help. Does it affect thyroid function or what?
Plaztik replied: "Well, I had the exact opposite reaction. Effexor XR caused me to lose weight, and I put it all back on after I quit. So, I will assume that it's effects would reverse for you also.
Take your time coming off Effexor slowly though!!! You probably already know about the "brain-shocks" and they really suck, but they do eventually go away.
I don't think it affects anything thyroid."
anthony b replied: "i believe it does have some effect on the thyroid as for increased weight gain it definitely does that, some of the side effects can be hard to deal with such as headaches, nausea all of which i experienced during trials, as for the weight gain you may have to try a combination of diet and exercise to drop those few pounds, but before you do away with your meds ask you physician for help on weening you off gradually. cold turkey is possible but not always advisable. best of luck to you."
On Effexor and CaN'T lose weight? Hi Everyone--I have been on Effexor 150 mg for about 7 months now...I don't feel horrible and i notice that my anxiety has decreased. What i am struggling with though is weight. My Dr. said that it is weight neutral, but for some reason, not matter what i do, i can not lose anything. I run 4 days a week, eat btwn 1100-1200 calories (low fat and low sodium--i am very into nutrition), and no matter what i do, nothing tips the scale. I can't figure it out...does anyone think this is Effexor related? I have gotten my thyroid checked out and it is normal...everything is normal. I am having a hydascan done next week due to abdominal issues...urg. Any thoughts? Thanks! Maddie
Thanks for the post thus far. I am the heaviest i have been and definitly want to shed weight and i am abovemy BMI...i am 5 foot 3 and weigh 150! This is definitly turning into an anxiety for sure!! I am seeing a therapist, but the wallet isnt too thick, so i had to cut back. I have never had such a hard time losing weight before, especially by being so disciplined, so the Effexor is the only thing i can think of...
AnIntelligentWoman replied: "Effexor is doing you no good dear. I would suggest cognitive therapy, a healthy diet, exercise and supplements.
No telling what that crap is doing to you long-term."
Sandy77 replied: "It definitely is not effexor related. Why do you want to lose weight first of all? Check your BMI and if it's within normal range, forget about your weight. Are you sure this is not one among your anxieties?"
Holly replied: "I have been on Effexor for almost five years now and I know exactly what your talking about. I most certainly agree that it is NOT weight neutral. Ironically I am also 5' 3 and maxed out at 150. The only solution that I can give is medical weight loss drugs. I honestly wouldnt recommend that either because as soon as you stop taking that the weight is going to come right back.
There are actually a few new medications that have just been put on the market that may have less of a weight gain side effect. Its worth a try"
