Does drinking caffeine during your period cause cramps? I really wanna know. I have to have caffine.

sabrinaelder replied: "Yes, If you have cramp badly. should not drink any caffeine and sugar should not take any of them."

Fishy!!! replied: "Caffeine is just overall not very good for you. It sets your natural energy in loops! It can totally make cramps worse."

Sprout replied: "Cramps are caused by prostaglandins that stimulate the muscles in your vagina to contract to squeeze the uterus lining out of your body, some women have higher levels of prostaglandin leading to naturally being more prone to menstrual cramps... ...but very few women ever need to suffer menstrual cramps as these can be treated or prevented compleatly by various different methods, if women take the time to learn how to prevent them. One such 'method' is changes in diet because this does affect your body in extreme ways. Caffeine does not cause menstrual cramps but it will contribute to increasing your menstrual cramps (the same as diry, salty foods, etc.) this is because of it's dehydrating and overstimulating effect, that doesn't mean cut it out compleatly but that it will contribute to the problem if you have period pains. You are far better off cutting it out compleatly, upping your water in take or drinking herbal teas because as well as replacing your caffeine drinks herbal teas will also ease off and prevent period pains, teas such as Black Haw, Yarrow, Raspberry leaf, Red Raspberry, Valerian, Blessed thistle, Black Cohosh and Dong quai being particularly good for preventing and easing period pains."

does caffeine help period pains? Iv been reading up about it but everything I read says to avoid caffeine during your period because it causes cramps, but I have REALLY bad pains and caffeine tablets seem to relax my muscles and ease the pain. am I just weird or does this help other people? Thanx

lilac17 replied: "it probably depends on the person. for me, caffeine causes cramps"

Mizzy Hunt replied: "My mom always told me it makes it worse, but that's my mom. I don't feel to much of difference with or without."

Angela W replied: "No, but if you like warm lemon tea will work wonders.Hope you feel better."

pinkribbon replied: "I used to take Feminax when I was younger. There is a helpful section on their website that offers advice on what to eat, drink and exercise during your period.Hope this helps. "

Leonel Di Makout Di Makolkog Jr. replied: "actually it varies, it relieves pain for others while for some it worsens."

intercommerce2003 replied: "A little if you take in form of coffee."

azmildman replied: "Eat a balanced diet that includes plenty of fruits and vegetables and is low in fat. Limit your intake of alcohol, caffeine, salt, and sweets."

capricorn dancer♥ replied: "Caffeine is a vaso-constrictor. A vaso-constrictor is a substance that causes cells in the brain or body to get smaller, which means less blood gets to the cell (as the cell is smaller). Because blood carries oxygen, there is less oxygen in the cell also. It's an exacerbating factor to cramping."

Does sugar or caffeine make your period heavier? During one of my first periods I drank a whole cup of coffee every morning because I was craving it. And I ate a lot of candy too. Then my period lasted about 11 days!! Then, my friend told me that sugar can make your period last longer/make it heavier. I believed her and now, everytime that point of month, I stay away from sweets and coffee. Is my friend telling me the truth?

khn_mchl replied: "I don't think that sugar and caffeine would make that much of a difference with your periods. You could just have a hormone imbalance which makes them last longer. But sugar and coffee will contribute to mood swings. Look out!"

Fatigue during period . . .? Does anyone know a really good way to get rid of fatigue when you have your period besides coffee, caffeine pills, etc? I usually get tired before and during my period, but this month I have been more so than normal.

Laurie J replied: "Fatigue is a vague symptom and can be attributed to a number of things. Epstein barre virus, stress, anemia, pregnancy, hormone fluctuations, cancer and even depression. Since the holidays are approaching, you may be doing more running around than usual and that in and of itself can be exhausing. You probably should see your doctor and get some blood work done. A CBC will rule out anemia. Good luck."

sweetre2 replied: "this could be pms or a drop in your iron level at this time. My suggestion to u is that you at least take a multivitamin everyday. see if this helps. If not you need to get your iron checked to make sure u are not anemic."

Barbie W replied: "it's low iron... eat some red meat and take a multi vitamin everyday. some of it can not be controlled. exercise is also a great way to minimize side effects."

Fuzzy Wuzzy replied: "Just keep moving ... Also you need to talk to your doctor if this concerns you"

mrose1135 replied: "Try taking a multi vitamin with Iron. But check with your Dr. first. He may have other suggestions."

Why is caffeine intake of concern with weight-loss diets? The South Beach diet says "no caffeine" during phase one of their diet. What difference does caffeine make - beyond possibly adding to the stress during what could already be a stressful period? Does it really have any effect on weight loss?

Talen A replied: "Actually, you don't need to diet per se in order to lose weight, the only diet which really worked for me is wu-yi tea, it can be checked out in the resource box underneath, they have a few free trials left, it has been reported in Reader's Digest and USA Today. I shed 25 pounds, it really does work!"

dweatherly_uscg replied: "i have no idea why they would suggest no caffeine. Caffeine is a proven fat burner and there are litterally thousands of studies to back that up. special diets like that come and go. increasing caffeine intake is the way to go to cut body fat. just dont over due it."

Sarah B replied: "Caffeine may promote both weight loss or the opposite. Caffeine may give a boost to your metabolism, but as it's after-effect, it gives you an urge to "pig-out" at meal time or even in-between-meal snacks."

Caffeine or "on the bean"? I have bipolar and I have noticed that I react differently to caffeine during certain periods. Like now for instance its 5am and I have been up all night and I had the coffee in the early evening. Normally the coffee would knock me out and I would sleep like a baby. Interestingly enough now that im in the depressed phase the caffeine has shot me up real high. So would caffeine in the manic phase be like ritalin to an ADHD person?

Morning Gloria replied: "Z, it could be possible. Have you ever noticed if you react differently to medications that cause droziness or exciteability at the two poles? This would be very important for your doctor to know. I would keep a little record of what you notice and make sure and bring it to their attention next time you see them. MG"

Is Midol the best OTC med for severe period cramp? I'm in sooooooooooo much pain right now! I had undiagnosed PID and the results are bad, but I am not in a position where I can have surgery at this time. Forget exercise; I can barely get off the couch! I welcome any valid suggestions. PS If you happen to know, why do people say chocolate? That has sugar and caffeine, two things they say to stay away from during periods. Am I missing something?

Emma C replied: "i get severe period pain, and i take a prescription of ponstan or mefac. it is essential to start taking them two or three days before your period is due. it really helps, i used to pass out from the pain of my periods, but now i barely even notice!"

Marie Saida replied: "Many women get more cramps because when we are menstrual, our body looses much more hemoglobin, thus giving us a lot more pain, you might want to ask your doctor first, try increasing your Vitamins B3 & B6 a few days before you start or right when you start, if you can take the supplement(with your PID), it will make much more comfortable & a lot of the pain goes away.(Because you are increasing your hemoglobin(red blood-cells).Keep your feet warm & YES! stay away from stimulants like chocolate & caffeine, sugar is not a stimulant, it also helps to cycle, if or when you can.(the motion helps circulation in the core area & that helps sometimes. Good luck!"

Molly replied: "I'm in exactly the same position as you, only I'm at work right now! I can barely move, I sympathise with you completely. I take a Chinese Herbal supplement called Dong Quai (angelica polymorpha root powder). You can find it in every health food store, just ask them. It's also an ingredient in a lot of women's health supplements, which you take every day to prevent symptoms. If you get Dong Quai pills, you can take 2 a day to prevent problems and boost your health, or take 2 every couple hours when you have pain. It works fast, within about 10 minutes, and lasts longer that Advil or Midol, I find. As for OTC pharmacy drugs, Midol Extended Relief is good as it contains Naproxen, which "kills" prostoglandins, the things that cause period pain. The other Midol pills don't contain naproxen. For something stronger, use Panadeine or something similar, containing codeine. Chocolate is a comfort food, as it releases endorphines when you eat it, causing you to be happy for a bit. That's why people take it. But after that, the sugar drop just makes it worse."

Ladies: What do you crave before, during, and/or after your period? I always crave something, but each month it's different. Like one month, I'll crave salt; the next, I'll crave sugar and/or caffeine. And it's always in different forms like chocolate, soda, chips, etc. Usually junk. What about you?

Ana replied: "hot Cheetos"

Vegasgrl replied: "I crave chocolate and salty stuff like FRIES!!! Very bad when you are watching what your eating!"

biggwen fan replied: "I am just like you. My cravings differ from month to month. Sometimes I crave sweet stuff and other times salty. This past month it was boiled peanuts???????? Go figure."

If caffeine is bad for cramps, why does Midol have caffeine in it? I have been told that you can minimize menstrual cramps by reducing the intake of caffeine or eliminating it completely from the diet during your period, but one of the active ingredients in Midol is caffeine. I am so confused.

Foxalot replied: "Caffeine is important to the body if you regularly use it. Not having it can make you sick if you are used to it."

Cathy F replied: "I was totally confused about this as well. I'm told the caffeine in Midol is equivalent to a small cup of coffee and is for those who suffer from extreme fatique during their cycle. I guess excessive caffeine is what you should avoid."

Tara662 replied: "Because some women/girls don't know many pills have ingredients they don't need. Another brand (I think it's Pamprin) has a antihistamine in it! It's all marketing. The caffeine and other unneeded ingredients is the main reason I use the CVS brand PMS medicine instead of Midol and Pamprin. It only has Acetaminophen and two diuretics."

what would happen if I take more than 1 caffeine pills under 3 hours? I'm taking caffeine pills to stay awake during studying & saw the prescription said that we should only take 1 caffeine per 3 hour period.

bwdesmo replied: "Nothing. Prolonged overusage can effect blood pressure sleeping, heartbeat etc."

kaycee replied: "you really need to take them as they say.....too much caffeine can cause you to be jittery, anxious, and can also cause you to be more tired than you were to begin with."

Justaguy replied: "Cut the crap. You do not need caffine pills, they are no good for you and will not help you learn anything. Get some sleep and when you study work damn hard for 2 hours take a 15 break and run or walk or jog or something, then do something else for 30 mins, your washing or something, then work hard again for another 2 hours and in the first 15 minutes go quickly over what you done in the last 2 hours. PS: Learning is really great fun - have a lot of fun and you will learn more. Don't kill your mind with Caffeine pills."

AVP replied: "Hold up, take a deep breath. I think you already took too many and want to know what the heck is happening to you. Basically you will have an increased pulse or heart rate and be very hyperactive. You will crash after though, which will make you feel like crap. Oh and taking too many can essentially kill you. Your heart will go into tachycardia and you will die."
