Osteoporosis: would doing any of these things be counterproductive? My wife's grandmother and mother have been diagnosed with ostepporosis and pre-osteoporosis. I encourage my wife to do adopt habits that I think would strengthen her bones and fortify her bone mass. But I don't even really know what actually takes place during osteoporosis. I was just guessing. Does anyone know what osteoporosis is? And will the following behaviors help? -Supplementing her calcium by eating: dark greens that contain calcium, calcium carbonate (Tums or Rolaids), calcium citrate, orange juice with calcium. -Drinking lots of water to stay hydrated. -Supplementing her iron by eating: meat and red apples, bone marrow and soft bones. -Improving her blood circulation by: exercising regularly to sweat, taking warm baths to sleep, consuming caffeine to compliment drugs when sick. -Possibly taking martial arts training that builds bone mass by striking and breaking boards. Is all of this helpful? Is any of this harmful?

bmac replied: "Did you look up "Osteoporosis"? Also, your wife is a big girl. She can do this herself. She should talk to her doctor about prevention since she has family members with it."

Susan S replied: "Osteoporosis is the thinning of the bones. It can happen with post menopausal women and people taking steroids on a continuing basis. It leads to disabling fractures. Iron can be counterproductive if taken at the same time as calcium supplements- tends to neutralize the calcium. Use Calcium + vitamin D for more effective delivery of calcium, weight bearing exercise is best. Striking and breaking boards can lead to fractures and that is the most serious problem with osteoporosis. You should check out the website of the National Osteoporosis Foundation,."

gryffindorgrad91 replied: "Osteoporosis is a breakdown in bone density. Basically it makes the bones go from being being fairly solid to like a sponge. Some of the worts areas of the body for getting osteoporosis are the vertebrae, the head of the femur (thighbone), and the thin bones of the forearm and shin (radius and ulna in the arm, fibula in the shin). Most of what you listed would be helpful, but I wouldn't be so encouraging of martial arts specifically. Any form of exercise that is "weight bearing" will help. Things like bike riding and swimming are NOT weight bearing, so don't help a whole lot. Walking is, as always, the best thing. If your wife hasn't already had it done she should get a bone density scan pronto. Even without the family history the scan should be done for the first time at 35, just like a first mammogram."

A recent study showed cola products such as Coke were a problem for osteoporosis for women but the article? briefly remarked that the "study did not find that colas affected men similarly." The article said either caffeine or phosphates were the ingredient to blame, and caused bone density problems or prevented bone from forming. I understand that women seem to be more prone to osteoporosis, but why would the affects of the cola on bones (as experienced by women according to the study) not also apply to men? Is there any difference between the bones in men and women besides the basic amount of bone mass?

blondambition replied: "the problem with women is their hormones, and when they stop producing the female hormones (menopause) it makes them more vulnerable to osteoporosis.Apparently these hormones were helping to regulate bone density, and when we stop producing them we experience vulnerability to osteoporosis. Taking progesterone can help keep this from happening. This coupled with the phosphoric acid in cola products is what makes women higher risk, although men can experience bone loss as well."

Me replied: "bone mass in men is not as dense much thicker than woman by far well most men"

stibsky replied: "well, if cola products such as Coke is a great help in sink and toilet bowl cleaning, softening the long standing stains, what could you expect it will do to your bones?"

Some Osteoporosis questions? Hey, I recentley read a book and the main character had Osteoporosis. I was wondering what is the prefered treatment for females when they get it and how does Caffeine use, physical exercise, heridity and physique effect it?

NutstersChick replied: "see links below, for information regarding all aspects of Osteoporosis, which is a posh word for porous bones. & it maybe helpful to bear in mind, males can also be effected, too."

Do caffeine, simple sugars, hydrog veg oils cause rheumatic illnesses? Female, 36, family with a history of osteoporosis, arthritis, osteopenia; Took ballet for most of childhood, jazz briefly, snowboarding, running; right knee surgery to remove torn cartilage; left knee aches daily; What could all of this mean? Please, only the serious-minded and professionals need respond. Peace...

empress_bilqis replied: "Caffeine might give you a problem with your private area"

hokiegirlvt79 replied: "As far as I have read the cause of most rheumatic illnesses is unknown...other than some studies supporting genetics giving a higher likelihood of developing such illnesses. If you participated in a lot of different activities that involve your knees it is possible that you have patella-femoral syndrome. I have had it since I was 15 and it never went away. It feels like arthritis... But, with a family history of the illnesses you mentioned... I would ask your physician. If it does happen to be arthritis or something like that, there are a lot of things that can be done to ease the pain before it gets too bad."

osteoporosis in women answers need? hi, im a 26 year old female and i have severe osteopenia. they said its almost osteoporosis. but i got it from severe malnutrition growing up and into young adulthood.i have bad eating habits and never grew the bone mass. im not losing bone mass. what am i supposed to do do i need to take calcium pills. there is no medical reason that i have this, everything is checked and its not the same reason old women get it.i am premenopaus, i dont drink or smoke what can i do, i dont get 3 meals a day due to a financial situation. i barely eat and i go hungry alot. since my bones are still growing will this affect my health and make the osteopenia worse? sometimes i eat only 1 meal a day and dont get any calcium on most days what should i do? how much worse will things get if i continue to live off of sugary snacks, caffeine, soda and eating 1 meal a day? will eating 3 healthy meals a day help? along with taking calcium pills or milk every day? since i have a few more years to add bone mass? what ways can i make sure to getr 3 meals since i have financial problems and im physically disabled and cant work. my family refuses to help me. i live in the usa whats the best course of treatment since i need to build bone mass and not prevent bone loss. since im not lising bone mass. the bone mass was never there.i need to build bone mass. i cant take fosamax or those other osteoporosis drugs since they only deal with horomones and post menopause bone density problems. i dont need hormones or menupause treatment, mine are fine and i am still of childbearing age and everything is ok with my reproductive system, its all normal i also have never been pregnant and dont have kids yet im not pregnant by the way do i need a complete healthy diet for healthy bones such as fruits and grains and protein?

Amanda replied: "Ok I will give you a lot of advice. I did a one year project studying osteoporosis. It is known as the silent disease, not many women know they are developing it until something actually happens. Your diet: You should include calcium (800mg per day) You can get calcium from dairy foods (milk, cheese yogurt) In order for calcium to go into your body it needs to be conjoined with a thing called phosphorus which is found in green vegetables (especially spinach and nuts) (RDA 1000mg) You can take some calcium supplements which normally do have some added phosphorus. A great source of calcium is tuna fish. When you buy it in the can where there is still little bones in the fish (the soft bones) it is good to eat all of it and don't omit the bones. This way, you are already getting the calcium which is in the fish's bones plus added calcium. Lifestyle: Smoking and drinking alcohol does de-mineralize your bones so it would be a good idea if you don't do either of these things. Pregnancy does affect many women, especially if you are not consuming your RDA of calcium. The baby will tend to feed off your bones which will de-mineralize them. When you are pregnant, it is a good idea to consume 1200mg of calcium in order for the baby and yourself to be getting an adequate amount of calcium. Some weight bearing exercisess do strenghten your bones (light weight-lifting) Good Luck. Edit: A healthy diet will be very effective for your bones as long as you are consuming the adequate amount of calcium and phosphorus. Try avoiding fatty foods, they will intertwine with all the good nutrients you are getting and might stop the calcium going into your bones. I can't stress enough how important calcium is to women. Even if you don't really like dairy foods, try putting cheese on some foods. Don't always depend on cheese though because that does contain fat. Maybe milk in your tea/cereal/some sauces. Yoghurt after dinner etc."

Is This Caffeine Intoxication? Okay, so this might sound a bit excessive or something... But after like, a litre and a half of Coke or something, I start to become extremely irritable(it's not obvious and I don't start shouting at people, I just tend to get frustrated with my self and keep going over all the fuck-ups I've done at school) and find everything funny. It's worse at night, 'cause, well, OBVIOUSLY I have trouble getting to sleep, and I listen to music to get to sleep(I've always been a big worrier and never really could get to sleep when I just left my mind to wander, so when I focus on the music I actually get to sleep quicker, than end up hating my self, LOL), I'll end up miming the lyrics and I'll be laughing LOADS, for around half an hour to two hours and then I'll end up hating my self. TBH, it's totally worth it, and I don't want it to end 'cause the highs are totally worth it and it's not like I can't go a day without carbonated drinks or anything without getting pissy(I'd just rather not) and I'm totally aware of the risks of getting a pH imbalance and all the crap like osteoporosis and stuff that comes with it, but I decided when I was 12 that I was going to have a good 50 years of life and then when it starts to get shitty or something there'll probably be some sort of cures available by then, and even if there isn't, I'd rather have 50 years of life rather than 80 mediocre years. I'm also wondering if it could be hormones or something. I mean, honestly, IDK if it is or not, or if hormones can be so excessive or something, but I'm 14 years old(and female if for some reason you can't look at my avatar) and afaik I don't have a hormone imbalance or anything like that. I also have Asperger's Syndrome and I know that laughing to one's self is common for people with it(and inappropriately, plus excessively) and a lot of the social anxiety that comes with it stems from constantly replaying one's failures in your mind. SO YEAH. I don't really want any advice on getting off on it or any additional risks 'cause caffeine's overall beneficial as well 'cause when it comes to school and stuff it allows me too keep my schedule and be more productive 'cause I only need 2 hours of sleep, allows me to think EXTREMELY fast, and I also think it allows me to be more social. But yeah, I just need to know if this is definitely NOT caffeine intoxication. AFAIK, 1.5 litres of coke is at least 250 mg(level of intoxication for caffeine) of caffeine. EMZ=]

Iakopa replied: "it isn't intoxication but it is a sugar / caffeine hype that isn't healthy at all."

yarg77@sbcglobal.net replied: "Caffeine makes you all hyper and thus irritable. I suggest don't drink things with so much caffeine. I'm only 15 and have been drinking coke for the past 5 years. My heart rate has rose to about 200 beats a minute while resting XD. It may seem good at first, but it will eventually screw you up."

1asdlfj;a replied: "i weigh 100 pounds and it took me 12 caffiene pills wich is like 2400mg of caffeine to feal a little bit of the effects and i can feal the effects off a tiny bump of cocaine and i never drink caffeine so im a light weight with it so i doubt you were actualy intoxicated enough to feal anything its probably a placebo effect where you take it and you think your fealing it becuase thats what you "know" in your brain is happening, but really its just your imagination, or you just somehow felt the caffeine of 250 mg lol"

I need a good research topic? HELP!!! I have to turn in a research proposal for my Health Science class by Thursday and I don’t know what to write about. We have to conduct a study about something related to health in the community. Some of my classmates are doing theirs the prevalence of autism on Hispanic communities, and how too much caffeine can lead to osteoporosis. (This is an undergraduate college course) I’m open to suggestions. Thanks.

Diet, exercise, economics, employment, unemployment, entertainment choices; can be sub-topics for your research. You can approach it from the angle of the effects of personal choices of the individual vs. personal choices in society. You can also interveiw adults and children who have had Ritilin in schools. You can also interview parents of children or adult children on Ritilin. Do a survey of those incarcerated subjected to this drug. You can so research on the effectivenes of Veterans Administration Hospitals & Clinics. Categorize the research by war eras, then contrast & compare. Project the outcome for future Vets based on the treatment on past Vets. I hope this helps. Let me Know how it works."

Diet/Caffeine-free coke vs. 100% juice...? My mom and I have been having this debate regarding which is healthier: Diet Caffeine Free Coke, or 100% Fruit juice. I pointed out that Coke contains Phosphorous, which leeches calcium from your bones, thus causing Osteoporosis (over time). 100% Fruit Juice, with no added sugar, has natural nutrients and vitamins that are very good for humans. But she keeps argueing (especially since she has Diabetes) that fruit juice is worse because there is so much sugar in it. But wouldn't you think that Coke, which is just chemicals and carbonated water, would be horrible for a Diabetic? Well, hopefully someone can clear this issue up for me. If any of you are health-nuts, Doctors, Dieticians, etc., Your input will be very much appreciated! Thanks =]

<3Nick Jonas replied: "Fruit juice is so much better!"

Samson T replied: "drink nothing in excess and drink water. juice is good for you, it contains vitmins u need and is better than regular pop. however still high in sugar....weight gain and yes, bad for diebetic. diet coke is bad for you. aspartame is cancer causing (everyone knows that, erae the an average diet coke contains many many times the recommended intake of asparatame a day look it up. the reocmmended intake is...relatively safe i guess). a diebetic should drink more water instead of having diet drinks. and yes, the acidic nature of the coke is bad for your bones. all in all, drink either drink as little as possible. u can get your vitamins from real fruits and aspartame is bad period."

dtsxavid replied: "Okay, 100% Fruit Juice is better because what you said, but if you're diabetic, then moderation is key. At the same time, Diet coke is good in the beginning, but ultimately hurts you. Why? Not only does Coke have Phosphorous, but it has Aspartame. That is the artificial sugar used, but since it messes up the glucose levels in the body, if your body takes actual sugar, the results are worse. 100% Fruit Juice is better if in moderation. Diet coke is only better if she never drinks/eats anything with sugar. If she does, the results are much worse. Since I doubt anyone would not drink/eat something with sugar, 100% Fruit Juice is always better. ---fyi, took to the future, there's research on how to end diabetes. Gene therapy may be scary, but it could be the cure."

☼ Erae ☼ replied: "I've heard a lot of people say that Diet soda is bad for you because of the Aspartame. I talked to a doctor and he told me that the research done with the lab rats and the aspartame we ridiculous....he said that they gave the rats a extreme amount of it...too much that the normal person even drinks, thus the bad effects on the rats and people feeding into the aspartame being cancer causing **** for your information I have looked it up about the lab rats and aspartame. I'm not trying to say drinking diet soda is better by no means, but it is not true about the cancer causing affects....theres just no proof. Do you not use a cell phone either because of the risk of cancer? The did research on that too which just turned out to be a load of crap! The juice is better, in he sense you get vitamins and nutrients from it that you don't get from diet soda, but it is loaded with sugars which will make you gain weight....which in the long run is not healthy.*****100% fruit juice is good for you, but has about 100 calories per serving. If you drink a lot of the fruit juice it is more liable to cause weight gain."

Santiago replied: "It would better, if you are drinking the 100% juice because they are more healthier than drink the diet and caffeine free coke as I know."

nyjae replied: "Your mom is right, fruit juices do contain alot of sugar though natural they can cause harm to a diabetic. I am not supporting her drinking soda (which I think is just plain garbage) but in her case I think it's the better choice."

What topic should i pick for my major research report for food/nutrition course? Basically i have a major report (ISU)(independant study unit) its for the course food and nutrition in grade 12. I need a topic with tons of articles sources and information if someone can pick top 3 from the following that would be ever so nice. Food allergies, calcium osteoporosis, effect of caffeine, lactose intolerance, food for athletes, women & iron deficiency, malnutrition & elderly, colon cancer & fibre intakes, childhood obesity, folic acid& neural tube defects, food additives, vegetarian diets (concern for protein), artificial sweeteners effects, diabetes, anti-cancer food, soy beans-food for future, Trans fats, cholesterol & arteriosclerosis, sugar: (dental, hyperactivity, obesity, diabetes) , low car diets vs. Canada’s food guide, dietary supplements (safe?, new? Needed?), digestive disorders, hypo glycaemia, high protein diets (effect on kidney), organic foods (government regulations, terminology, new technology), fast food, Eating disorders: anorexia, Bulimia, Compulsive eating (choose 1), Fad diets (South beach diet, Atkins etc Choose 1), Serving sizes (have they changed?, effects on weight, attitude, learning ability), Tap water vs. bottled water, Holistic medicine, herbal supplements, Red wine (benefits/ heart health), Salt (hyper tensions & risk to health), chocolate (flavorids, healthful properties).

Virtual Evie replied: "How about bio-engineered seeds and plants. Investigate the World Health Organization's plan, Codex Alimentarius, to be implemented world-wide on December 31, 2009."

What should I do about school? My problem is that I know I'm smart, but I don't get to show it. I know stuff that they would never teach in school. Like, I know like 18 digits of pi, and I know a lot about medicine. I'm like a walking medical encyclopedia, everyone asks me for medical advice. I know that I can write really well, but writing essays isn't my thing, I'd rather write about whatever I feel like writing. In social studies, I know a lot about politics, but I don't get to talk about that. Anyone who got into talking politics with me would get an ear full. I know a whole bunch of stuff that I don't get to use. I'm in the 10th grade and ever since I got to High School, I haven't been doing well. Right now, I'm not doing well in Chemistry. When I was in 8th grade, I got the chance to do a project about whatever topic I wanted to, and while everyone else did something simple like what osteoporosis is, I did a project on the effects of caffeine on the human brain (which is bio-chemistry) I knew stuff that my science teacher, who had just finished medical school didn't know.

Chris I replied: "I was pretty much the same myself. When I was in Grade 9 , the guidance counsellor sat me down & told me I'd be the smartest person working the night shift at some processing plant if I didn't get my ass in gear! In my case I was just too stressed to focus - a lot of problems at home and I was a shy geeky kid. But I was smart enough to realize that my brain was my ticket to my own LIFE and a college education could open lots of doors. What worked for me was to focus on that picture of the adult me - with my own place, career and car, making my own decisions. That was the carrot that forced me to focus on Chemistry and Calculus but it worked!!! Good Luck girl. You can do it!"

MamaB replied: "Well, you could try to just take classes where you already know everything so you can show everyone else how smart you are. But then at the end of the year you wouldn't be any smarter. OR You could tell yourself that if you are already as smart as you are, then all the new things you can learn this year will make you even smarter. And obviously, you are smart enough to learn those new things. It can be scary to feel like you might not know as much as you wish, but look at this as a challenge and an opportunity to expand your mind further."

dig replied: "well looking back i realize that high school pretty much doesn't matter. if you really are smart, it will show on your ACT and balance out average grades. what you need to do is worry about college. you cant get by with that shit there. so i would suggest not getting too stress about high school work pressure and just have fun. college is where you really have to stay on top of everything."
