Why is 'easy bruising' a serious side effect of taking Atenolol? Well I already bruise real easily and I've noticed that I bruise even more so since I've been on Atenolol. I've been on it a little under a month. I just wanted to know if it was something I should worry about.

Bill replied: "You sure it's the atenolol or are you taking aspirin also? bruising is not listed as one of the side effects of Atenolol."

Diane Y replied: "I take Atenolol and I didn't know that it causes easy bruising and I have been on it for three years and nothing I have says that is a side effect. I do take aspirin and warfarin and those do cause bruising. Atenolol Oral Back to Drug Overview Does this medication have side effects? Forgetting to take my atenolol- side effects? In the past week i forgot to take my atenolol 3 times. It's only taken once a day and I take in 50mg. (mg?) I know that it's dangerous to stop taking it, so what about forgetting?

**BaRt Is In dA HoUsE** replied: "i would not stop or else it's effect it is suppsoe to do would disappear and you would get your problem all over again I would advice you to take your atenolol 3 times a day til it is finish...don't even think about skipping it or else your condition would be worse. get well^_^"

AbeLincolnParty replied: "Beta blocbkers like atenolol are used for high blood pressure and slows the heart. If you have been taking them for a while, then suddenly stop then a rebound effect of a racing heart beat can occur. atenolol is eliminated rather slowly so the effect is not a bad as with quickly eliminated beta blockers."

Future Pharmacist replied: "You should take the missed dose of atenolol just as soon as you remember to take it. Unless, it is almost time for the next dose, then skip the missed dose and resume your regular dosing schedule. Never take a double dose of your medication to make up for a missed one. Important Warning: Do not stop taking atenolol without talking to your doctor. Sudden stopping atenolol intake may cause chest pain, heart attack, or irregular heartbeat. Your doctor will probably decrease your dose gradually. Also Warning: Symptoms of overdose may include: swelling of the hands, feet, ankles, or lower legs numbness or tingling of the mouth sweating or confusion excessive tiredness unusual weight gain difficulty breathing rapid heartbeat slow heartbeat lack of energy sudden hunger blurred vision shakiness weakness headache pale color dizziness wheezing fainting Hope everything will be OK inshaa Allah. Best wishes"

How long do side effects from Atenolol (a beta blocker) last? My husband was just started on Atenolol 50mg for Vasovagal Syncope, and is having reactions like diahrea, nausea, tiredness, dry eyes, etc. It says on the pamphlet these may occur, but it is enough to get him sent home from work. Does anyone have any info on this drug? Thanks!!

•• TONY •• replied: "Hello there, I have been taking Atenolol every day for the last 12 years since I had my first angioplasty. Luckily, I have had no side effects whatsoever. However, I was told at the time I was first prescribed it, that if I had any problems to let them know and they would give me an alternative beta blocker. Apparently there are several different drugs that can be used instead of Atenolol. Just ask your husband's cardiologist to put him on a different beta blocker.."

John N replied: "yeah, there are a lot of beta blockers out there, and they're not all the same. I don't tolerate some of them. He needs to see his doc and try a different one."

Atenolol side effects serious? Im 19 years old and last year i was put on atenolol becasue i had rapid heart rate, my average was 120 and the highest it spiked on the day i wore the heart monitor was 152. I recently looked up the side effects and saw on wedmd it said serious but rare side effects and listed a bunch of stuff, and at the end of the list was increased thrist and increased urination which in the past couple of months i drink everything i can get my hands on! and i figured the inceased urination was caused by that. Am i just paranoid? what could they be symptoms of?

n replied: "Atenolol is a good medicine for rapid heart rates. It's used very often. The side effect of increased drinking (and as a result increased urination) is possibel. Other things that can cause these symptoms are eating too much salt (makes you thirsty) or too much sugar (same thing) or maybe diabetes (gives too much sugar in your blood, which will make you thirsty). There are also many very rare disorders that can cause this, but that is not really likely in your case"

L_H Qutub(Retired) replied: "The medical student has answered your question very well, the only point I will like to add is that it is contraindicated; in lung diseases e.g asthma etc."

atenolol has anybody had bad side effects on this blood pressure mediction? has antbody had bad side effects on atenolol blood pressure medication I had muscle aches and stomach upset and tingling in legs and arms and just not feeling good its also got chlothizide in it witch depleteds your body of pottisum has anybody had thease side effects are anyother side effects I may have and not no it on this medication does anybody got any advise or no what I can do to help it thanks for your time and your advise

hironymus replied: "There are a dozen medications against high blood pressure. If you are sure your symptoms are caused by atenolol simply ask you Dr. to prescribe another one."

SZO replied: "You may want to talk to your doctor to prescribe a different blood pressure medication if you are having problems with the atenolol that you are taking. Most medications have their own side effects and your body is probably just getting used to the medication."

I am changing from toprol xl to atenolol because of side effects. How will the transition be.? I take toprol xl for Supraventricular Tachycardia thnks for the input cost is one issue they are the same except atenolol does not cross the blood brain barrier like toprol. toprol disturbs sleep and causes bizarre dreams

jack replied: "Both are of same group called Beta blockers. So both of them have almost same side effects. I don't know why your doctor is changing from one to other if there is a side effect for one. Anyway if your doctor said so, then you can just stop the toprol and continue on atenolol at the dose your doctor adviced. As both are from same group it won't make any problem if you abruptly stop one and start on the other."

Kim k replied: "Jack answered so well there's only one thing I can add. My mother took atenolol for a few years and was not bothered by any side effects. this is a woman who is every sensitive to medication, it's unusual for her to not have a problem with a med. If she felt no ill effects from atenolol I doubt you will as the two meds are so similar. I'm guessing the switch is a cost consideration, atenolol is the cheapest, the one all the insurance companies want to pay for and I believe is on the list of $4 prescriptions at Walmart, Target and any other pharmacy who has that $4 list of meds.."

a question about atenolol and its side effects? Since i been taking 50 mg. of atenolol a day i been feeling nervous and have sensitive eyes. Has this happen to anyone else?

arkansasgirl02071981 replied: "THIS IS THE BEST I CAN ANSWER YOUR QUESTION ------------What are the possible side effects of atenolol? If you experience any of the following serious side effects, stop taking atenolol and call your doctor immediately or seek emergency medical treatment: an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of your throat; swelling of your lips, tongue, or face; hives); wheezing or shortness of breath; an unusually slow or irregular heart beat; swelling of your feet and/or lower legs; leg pain or cramping; sudden weight gain (more than 2 pounds in one day or 5 pounds in one week); chest (heart) pain; cold or blue feet and hands; or skin rash. If you experience any of the following less serious side effects, continue taking atenolol and talk to your doctor: fatigue or confusion; headache or dizziness; weak pulse or mildly slow heart rate; diarrhea, constipation, gas, nausea, or vomiting; depression; nightmares; or impotence (difficulty obtaining or maintaining an erection). Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially bothersome. --------------------------------------------------------------------"

Should I see any side effects from 25mg of Atenolol? I've been taking 25mg of Atenolol once a day for about 3 weeks now. I know 25mg is the lowest dose, but I have been very tired, and dizzy off and on. I feel very detached every once and a while too. Is this all caused by the medication? ( I am going back to see my doctor on monday, I just thought I'd ask it on here while I'm waiting.)

Royce Ann M replied: "It could be. These are all adverse effects of Atenolol"

Orhan Veli replied: "yes its a atenolol classic side effects. i think you have started the high blood pressure begining therapy. A couple of weeks after the side effects will decrease but if these side effects are irresistible; you can advice to your doctor to change your medicine to one of them which are more cardio selective beta blockers (like propranolol ) or another group of like ACE inhibitors. get well soon :)"

bj replied: "I take the same amount and haven't had any problems. Maybe your blood is too low, that could cause you to be tired or dizzy. I take mine at the drug store for free, or you could buy a tester there."
