I have been taking Wellbutrin XL 300 for depression and anxiety but it doesn't help my anxiety. Is it common? I have been taking Wellbutrin XL 300 for the past 9months for depression, but I also suffer from anxiety. My doctor says that the Wellbutrin XL 300 should work for my anxiety but I do not believe it is working. She doesn't want to prescripe me an anti-anxiety drug because she thinks the Wellbutrin should take care of the anxiety. Does anyone else still suffer from anxiety while taking Wellbutrin XL 300 and if so what should i do?

virginia_maryland replied: "Wellbutrin is not the best SSRI, for anything. Paxil is great for anxiety but it's really hard to go off of."

Matt replied: "I haven't tried Wellbutrin but if it isn't helping your anxiety then your doctor should be trying alternatives! One drug doesn't fit all! I have had good results with Xanax and Zoloft but everyone is different."

the_blue_martini_69 replied: "yes i was on it also and it stopped workin that happens alot with most drugs try another drug theres tons of anxiety meds jus ask ur doctor depends on what ur doctor wants u on"

MyMarriageRocks replied: "I'm also on Wellbutrin 300 mgs and no it has not helped at all with my anxiety or depression. My doctor put me on prozac and if it seems to work they are going to wean me off of Wellbutrin. I think Wellbutrin is a lame drug that doesn't work."

truthsearcher replied: "See if the Dr. will consider adding the smallest dose of Lexapro, ( 10 mg), along with the Welbutrin, or alone. It's fantastic. I have a lot of anxiety and was panicking and the dr put me on it, and it's truly amazing and had government approval for the treatment of anxiety. Go to lexapro.com"

prozaksperspective replied: "Wellbutrin has an OCD (obsessive-compulsive disorder) reduction component. I would have to guess your anxiety is repetitive thoughts. I'm not knowledgeable on anti-anxiety meds. I do take Seroquel at night. It has the lovely distinction of being called an anti-psychotic. It's prescribed for anxiety along with a host of other diagnoses. Risperdal cut my anxiety when I took it on a backpack trip through Europe. I still take them as needed. If you tell your doctor that you posited a question on the internet, they will sit-up very strait and very fast :) Then they will listen like their job depends on it, because it will. They can't have their patients falling over dead because the patient didn't get answers from the doc and went to the web instead. :)"

Paul A replied: "I take Wellbutrin SR (150 mg) in the morning, and Lexapro (10 mg) in the evening, for depression and anxiety. I've been taking that for over a year and a half, and it's working very well for me. I'm surprised they would prescribe just Wellbutrin for anxiety - that is why I'm taking the Lexapro. From what I've been told, Wellbutrin doesn't really do much for anxiety. I tried Wellbutrin XL 300 - and it made me nauseous all the time. Best of Luck to you :-) Paul."

Has anyone tried Wellbutrin xl for depression and anxiety? I just started this a couple weeks ago...I think I have noticed a little difference... I have more energy whereas I used to be tired all of the time. I'm not sure if it's helping my anxiety...or ADHD which I think I have. It has made me more emotional though - I cry much more. I was just wondering what other people thought of this drug...

Amber replied: "I have Bipolar Disorder or Cyclothymia, which ever one - really they are one in the same just a different form. I was diagnosed when I was 16, and am now 30. I have taken Wellbutrin XL for the symptoms of Mania, which was basically anger, impatience, stress, etc. It took a while for the drug to get into my system. I hadn't taken any medication in over 8 years at that time, but it seemed when I had my twins, it triggered everything. I waited 6 months for the hormones to level out, but it didn't change. I did a lot of research on my symptoms and the different chemicals in the brain and found that this medication would work best for me. I was right. It doesn't make me lathargic, but mainly calms me. I don't talk so fast and jump around in my thoughts, but it doesn't change my personality either. But I think each to their own, give it time and if you are still crying, after a month or so, then talk with your doctor. There is also Wellbutrin SR, which is a slow release tablet that might work better. I need something that works fast though. :-)"

Is Wellbutrin XL for anxiety?? I got them today.. I have social anxiety and depression.. maybe other mental things goin on.. Umm.. im on 150 mg.. Is it good meds?? R they gonna help me?? Will it help with my anxiety??

Trish J replied: "Wellbutrin extended release helps with a variety of conditions. It will help with depression, social anxiety and other anxiety disorders. It is a good medication. If it doesn't seem to help with your anxiety as much as you feel it should, you should talk to your doctor about maybe taking another med along with this."

Darlene G replied: "Wellbutrin XL is a good medication. Of course every individual is different so you will have to go by the way you are feeling and be honest with your Dr. tell him if you are still feeling the anxiety as if you are he may need to put you on something else or on a higher dose 4-6 weeks down the road. Work with your Dr. they will fine the right meds to help you out. Mine did!"

estkijedsco replied: "yes it is an antidepressant that can help a number of conditions...anxiety and depression included. I know of a few people that have taken this for the most part they liked it but i also know a couple of people where it actually intensified their anxiety which is not unheard of with any of the drugs, it's just a chance that you have to take. Keep in mind you should give it a couple of weeks until you feel the effects, if it helps then great but if you find you dont like it there are many others to try until you get the right meds that help, a lot of people go through this. Good luck with everything."

martinmagini replied: "Wellbutrin MADE me nervous. It kept my muscles in a constant state of readiness, as if I were preparing to sprint or something, even when I was trying to sit still. It made sleeping very difficult. This was just my experience with it. I am sorry to hear of your troubles. Have you tried some other methods such as a very healthy diet, good nutritional supplements, lots of exercise, a change of routine, making a plan for your life, exerting some control over your environment, plenty of sleep, reading and researching your condition, staying away from people and situations that bring you down, taking some classes in something that interests you, etc.? Best wishes with everything."

gerardo c replied: "i used to take them for depression and they helped me a lot. i took them for a year and that was long ago, i been very well with not signs of depression or nightmares, but not skip a day and if you feel better do not stop taking them, wait till your doctor tells you to. good luck"

lawson403 replied: "Wellbutrin is for a lot of different reasons, yes it is for anxiety,It can also help you quit smokeing also"

How do you deal with depression and anxiety when you no longer have health insurance and cannot afford to pay? full price for prescriptions? I don't have health insurance as of the new year. My problem is that I am taking three different prescriptions for depression and anxiety, (Wellbutrin XL, Effexor XR, and Ativan) and I can simply not afford to pay full price for them (around $250.00 per prescription). Does anyone have any advice on what I can do to help myself? I am already mentally prepared for withdraw, I just don't want to end up feeling hopeless and worthless. Any advice would greatly be appreciated. Thanks. Wellbutrin XL has no form of generic...only regular Wellbutrin. Effexor XR has no generic. I've exhausted those possibilities already, but thank you. Do you buy your meds online?

Sheila L replied: "I would research natural remedies... start with vitamins"

C J replied: "I can't believe they cost that much! I use generic Paxil and it costs only $40/month ... that's in Canada. You could probably get it cheaper if you're in the states. Effexor is more expensive but there may be a generic on the market by now. Also generic Prozac is very cheap. Don't let anybody convince you that generic drugs are inferior because they are chemically identical to the brand name counterparts. You really should try to get something in place - quitting cold turkey can be very hazardous to your health."

glaser2343 replied: "i would see if there is a county hospital in your area. usually a county hospital will not require insurance and they should have a pharmacy affiliated with them to help pay the cost of the medication. check it out."

Dave replied: "In many cases, if you explain your circumstances to your physician, they will fill prescriptions via samples. If you can’t afford a mental health professional or doctor you should contact your local Health Department. Most will maintain a list of physicians who offer services to low/no income patents. They also tend to maintain a larger number of samples for low income patients. Speak with your physician. Some doctors will even call other physicians in order to locate more samples. You never know without trying. Good luck."

JAN replied: "Check with social services in your area to see if they can help with any advice on where to find care when you do not have insurance. Our medical insurance situation is beyond repair in this country. It needs a complete overhaul. When a family of three pays three times more for medical insurance then for their house payments something is seriously wrong. That is exactly our situation. We are at our breaking point too! My heart goes out to you."

Ladyofathousandfaces replied: "Well if you go to mental health, they will go by your income, and how much you have to spend. They can also get med's from the makes of them. There are a lot of companys that make the med's taken for depression and anxiety, that do send like a month at a time to the health provider that you are seeing , each month, so then you are not with out the medication. I know a lot of people that has done this. And have been getting their meds for 8-10 years now from the maker of the medications they take. There are places out there that will help you with this if you ask, that is all you need to do is ask who you r seeing, or even just your normal health doctor can get the meds. And there are places that do therapy for free. Happy Hoildays"

natasha74 replied: "I have been trying to treat mine without prescripts: start by watching what you eat (healthy eating makes you feel better...) and try to work out more often. Contact the local county mental health department and find a therapist who offers services on a "sliding scale" so weekly/biweekly sessions are more within your means. Professional help is essential to helping you solve this problem. In addition, keep a journal: this is key to helping your therapy work best ~you can review it and see what your consistent issues are.. and try to figure out what some of the causes are.. I have also been taking vitamins, fish oil and consistently doing yoga/stretching to try to keep my "stress" levels down.. Also, family/friend support is helpful too: let them know you are having a tough time and want their help and support to get through it. If you are religious, this may be a time to reach out to that community also or if you are not (like me), it may be time to find a group which fits your beliefs. Also, find new hobbies. It is good if they are social, but even if they are solitary and you enjoy them: hobbies give you something to look forward to and distract you (ps: tv doesn't count!!) I've had friends come down off prescrips and it isn't fun.. just remember you are in charge of your health: mentally and physically!"

Beau†iful Nightmare replied: "i dont know where u live, but where i live i have alameda allience and medi-cal. it pays for everything. maybe where u live there may be some kind of insurence plan of this sort"

Kris replied: "Here are some links to patient assistance programs. They can help you pay or give you free prescriptions if you cannot afford them. You just need to fill out forms for each company and they usually ship the drugs to your doctor for you to pick up. Also, there are several companies that work with all the drug manufacturers, so you only have to fill out one form and they'll do the rest of the work for you. Do a web search for prescription cost assistance or something similar. Wellbutrin XL (GlaxoSmithKline Co.)http://www.bridgestoaccess.com/ Effexor XR (Wyeth Pharmeceuticals) Ativan is available as a generic, called lorazepam. I don't know which company makes Ativan, but this site has a list of manufacturers websites, if you know it. Good luck!"

namanselma replied: "Get your drugs from Canada where they are generally one-third cheaper. The USA has the highest priced pharmaceutical products in the entire world. Read on: "FDA OKs Generic Antidepressant Effexor" Generic Version May Bring Cost Savings, Says FDA By Miranda Hitti WebMD Medical NewsReviewed By Louise Chang, MD on Wednesday, August 09, 2006 Aug. 9, 2006 -- People taking the antidepressant Effexor are getting a generic option. The FDA yesterday approved the first generic version of Effexor (venlafaxine), a widely used prescription drug for major depressiondepression. The generic drug isn't the same as Effexor XR. Generic drugs often cost less than brand-name drugs, notes Gary Buehler, director of the FDA's Office of Generic Drugs. Generic venlafaxine "can bring significant savings to millions of Americans diagnosed with [major depressive disorder]," Buehler says, in an FDA news release. Like all antidepressants, generic venlafaxine will carry a "black box" warning about possible suicide risk in children and teens. Generic venlafaxine will come in five doses: 25 milligrams, 37.5 milligrams, 50 milligrams, 75 milligrams, and 100 milligrams. Its maker is Teva Pharmaceuticals USA. Effexor is made by Wyeth Pharmaceuticals Inc. Wyeth is a WebMD sponsor. SOURCE: News release, FDA. 2. The generic Wellbutrin (BUPROPION) has been around for years and years. I have been on the stuff for years and years. It's not a huge deal to go from Wellbutrin XL to BUPROPION. I went through something exactly like this a few days ago with Escitalopram vs. Citalopram. Trust me, not a cause for huge concern. I am, in fact, completely surprised that your health insurance plan paid for the stuff. My own (Blue Cross) will not and never has. 3. Lorazepam (generic ativan) also been around for many years. Blue Cross would ONLY pay for that generic too! If you can order the Generics from Canada your bill will drop SIGNIFICANTLY. Good Luck with it and happy new year too!"

Just Thinking replied: "Have you called your Dr explained the situation to see what help is available. There is no way you should be withdrawing from this medication on your own and it disgusts me to think of the additional pressure you are facing with this problem. Is it possible to visit the ER as an out patient? There must be some assistance somewhere, the samaratins or similar group may also be able to assist."

Cute But Evil replied: "You can call your pharmacist and check who the pharmaceutical company is that manufactures the drug. Once you know that information you can find the number or maybe get the number from your pharmacist and explain your situation. If you meet certain financial criteria many of these companies will help you get the drugs at reduced cost or for free. It sounds like you will have more than one company to deal with. You can check online to and do a search based on the names of your meds and find out who manufactures them. Whatever you do, do not go cold turkey. You can suffer severe withdrawal symptoms like seizures especially when dealing with Effexor XR and Wellbutrin XL. You need to withdraw from those medications for a period of weeks and sometimes even months because it's pretty brutal. I used to take Effexor XR and I felt horrible even as I was tapering off...Be careful. If you can't get any help at least find out from the prescribing doctor how to taper off safely. Good luck..."

kmdanie1279 replied: "Look into county services. Most will have a way to help pay at least part of the perscription if not all. And you can get other medical services from them."

Jennifer replied: "Go to That is where I went to sign up for Effexor for free."

Wellbutrin XL - How long does it take to start working and what can I expect in the meantime? I started taking Wellbutrin XL a little over two weeks ago. I started on 150mg and 4 days ago increased that dosage to 300mg. I felt better quickly after starting the medication and had 2 low days before I increased the dosage. The past two days I have been really depressed. Is this normal? Will it get better or should I talk to my doctor about another medication? Also, I have had insomnia for 2 months - I guess a result of anxiety and depression. I have read that Wellbutrin XL can cause insomnia. Will that side effect go away? (I don't know if it's causing it in me since I had it before.) Thanks!

Mightymo replied: "Wait for another few days and take the 300mg. and if it persists see a doctor, Wellbutrin might not be the right antidepressant for you. Some people will respond better to Paxil or Prozac or other drugs. Sometimes the doctor might have to experiment with different pills and see what works best for you."

bmac replied: "Give the new dosage a little more time. I'm sure the doctor would say the same thing. Remember, antidepressants are only meant to help you out while you are in therapy/counseling. Antidepressants WON'T fix your depression. Only counseling will. As far as the insomnia, ask your doctor about Trazadone. It's and antidepressant that in very low doses (50-100 mgs.) is used for sleep. It's non-addictive. Take it when you need it; stop when you don't."

sweetie1121 replied: "well i noticed a change after about 3 weeks, but i mostly took it to quit smoking"

joe b replied: "first off, why are you on it? secind do you really need it? do you know how bad all those anti dep or bi polar meds are for your liver? if you want to get better try not smoking or drinking, cut out caffine, eat healthy, exercise, get out and do something, i am bi-polar, and have been on 32 meds inpatient 15 times and had ect done, so i have a point here. try religion, that helped me."

formerly_bob replied: "It might take a few weeks after starting the higher dose. Insomnia can be a problem for some people. Some doctors also prescribe a small dose (10mg daily) of prozac (fluoxetine) to offset the insomnia and also provide an additional boost to the anti depressant effect. You could ask your doc if you could try out this combo. A common side effect of prozac is sleepiness."

addicted2stamping replied: "I think you should consider taking it for a few more weeks at least, before you ask your doctor for something different. That isn't something that kicks in right away. I take the same thing, same dosesage too. I've been on it for over one year, and lately noticed times of feeling depressed.... I know that just because you take the pill doesn't mean your never gonna feel "down" again. You certainly don't want to miss doses. And again, it's not something where you will notice drastic changes, it will be more subtle. After some time I think you will notice how you deal with things how you handle them, that the pills are helping you on a daily bases. If not talk to your doctor, because I saw commercial on tv about antidepressents, and many people can still experience the symptoms while on the meds...... and there is actually another pill for that! Go figure."

Poetgirl76 replied: "You are still working up to the 6 weeks it can take to reach it's full potential. When an antidepressant works, the improvement is usually kind of gradual. Even when one works well for you, it doesn't always work to completely get rid of your symptoms. What you will notice though is a drastic decrease in the intensity, duration and severity of the depression. They aren't magic, they aren't "happy pills", they just help you to balance out. My advice is keep taking it as prescribed by your doctor and bring any concerns you have to him or her. Since you did notice some improvement early on, it's worth sticking it out for another month or so to see how well it works, unless you notice your depression steadily worsening. Insomnia is a symptom of depression, so if this med helps relieve the depression, you might find it easier to sleep normally. It's true Wellbutrin can cause insomnia, but just because it can doesn't mean it will. One thing you can do to help avoid that problem is take it early in the morning. Both my son and I are on this medication and it hasn't worsened our preexisting insomnia. Good luck!"

Is Wellbutrin XL a good choice to help with my anxiety and panic attacks? So I have a new doctor, and he prescribed me Wellbutrin for my anxiety and panic attacks. I did my research online and I heard a lot of people say it makes your anxiety worse because it gives you energy, energy+anxiety+panic seems like it would =disaster! I'm worried about taking it because I don't want to make my symptoms worse, I should add I have trouble sleeping and the pharmacist said this med can keep you up at night. Is there another medicine I should take. Also I am leaving to go on vacation for over a month and mostly won't be able to see the psychiatrist, that's why my doc is recommending the med! So wouldn't it be better if I were to take a SSRI for anxiety and Ativian or zannax for the major panic attacks? Please help!

Tom G replied: "This isn't exactly an answer but i'm on xanax and it works even though i have to get stronger medication, but it seems a lot of doctors will prescribe xanax."

kerbear7703 replied: "The Wellbuyrin XL works great for me. I take it every morning so it will not effect my sleeping at night. It does not do too much for my anxiety issues though. I take prn Zannax for that. The combo of the 2 really keep my depression and anxiety under control."

jackie_jabar replied: "Wellbutrin works great for some people and for others it does not work. Talk to your doctor and ask about taking a SSRI and also Ativan. Most doctors will work with you when you request that they try something different. I had panic attacks at one time and my doctor worked with me and I used the Ativan."

Paul A replied: "I take Wellbutrin SR (150 mg) in the morning, and Lexapro (10 mg) in the evening, for depression and anxiety. I've been taking that for over a year and a half, and it's working very well for me. The Wellbutrin SR seems to help me to be more alert and active - and wanting to do things - while the Lexapro makes me more mellow, and it helps me sleep better, too. They are relatively low doses of both medications, which keep side effects at a minimum. My doctor told me Wellbutrin is not for anxiety, that's what the Lexapro is for."

How do pain killers interact with Zoloft and Wellbutrin XL? I've recently started taking both Zoloft and Wellbutrin XL to treat anxiety and depression. After looking at the list of drugs that interact with Zoloft, I found listed Aspirin, Ibuprofin and Naproxen. So I figured I could then take Tylenol...but I found that it was on the list of drugs that interact with Wellbutrin XL. So my question is: What can I use to treat my headaches, which have been very unpleasant?

Neil L replied: "The best person to ask for a quick solution is your pharmacist. Take care."

lil sammy replied: "Hi. I've had the same question with Wellbutrin, which I take for ADHD. My doctor says Advil, because it does a little less damage to the liver, but that doesn't help my headaches (which can be pretty signifigant with this med). My pharmacist told my to take Tylenol extra strenght rapid release gels, and I use 200 mgs when I need it. It does seem to help. From what I understand, you have to avoid over the counter migraine pills that contain caffeine, those are the ones that could make you more uncomfortable. Good luck, and I can tell you that over time with this stuff, the headaches do improve. It took me about a month, but my results have been worth it :) Take care!"

On Wellbutrin XL and like it alot but with the added anxiety go away from it? Is it a temporary or permanent side effect?? thanks

Ian C replied: "Symptoms of anxiety may be present at first, but in the long run Wellbutrin has been shown to reduce anxiety (it is anti-anxiety medication). Don't worry, it will go away. Wellbutrin is simply great."

VIOLINSURFER replied: "wellbutrin is not an anti anxiety DRUG, it's an anti depressant, symtoms are typically dose related or tolerance, anxiety and irritability is definitely a problem with some people, it may or may not go away, lowering the dose usually helps, but check with your doctor first, always take during am/day, if the anxiety does not go away it may actaully prevent you from getting sleep, good luck"

Experience switching from Wellbutrin XL to generic? I have been taking Wellbutrin XL (the brand name version) for anxiety for several years. However, my insurance changed and now the price difference between the brand and generic (bupropion hcl) is huge. My doctor said he can't guarantee the same results since only the active ingredient is the same and other ingredients can be different. I wanted to know if anyone has made this switch and if they've noticed any differences.

The One and Only replied: "When I took Zoloft, I was switched to the generic version (Sertraline), and it worked just as well, but it made me feel sick all the time."

Rockford replied: "The fillers can be different. It can effect how well the medicine is absorbed. There are also different companies that make the generic so when you go for a refill, the generic might not be the same as the last time you filled it. It depends which generic the pharmacy orders. Wellbutrin is one medication where people do seem to notice a difference between the brand and the generic. Don't buy three months worth of generic in case you are not happy."
