"chest pain, angina; insomnia, dizziness, hypoaesthesia, arthralgia; back pain; less commonly anorexia, malaise, weight gain, amnesia, impotence, thrombocytopenia, tinnitus, and alopecia; rarely pancreatitis, peripheral neuropathy, and peripheral oedema; very rarely cholestatic jaundice, hypoglycaemia, hyperglycaemia, and Stevens-Johnson syndrome"

Paul Ding replied: "According to the prescribing information for Lipitor -
Atorvastatin is generally well-tolerated, and side effects are rare. Minor side effects include constipation, diarrhea, fatigue, gas, heartburn, and headache. Atorvastatin should be used with caution in patients with alcohol or other liver diseases. Persistently abnormal liver tests during treatment are rare but may require discontinuation of the medication. Rare cases of muscle inflammation (myositis) and breakdown have been reported with other drugs in this class (HMGCoA reductase antagonists), and it is assumed that this side effect also may occur with atorvastatin. Muscle breakdown causes the release of muscle protein (myoglobin) into the blood and accumulation of the protein in the kidney tubules, resulting in kidney failure.
The medical community's idea of side effects seems to be different than your and my idea of side effects. They talking about people dying, and how rare it is. On the other hand, if you ask your friends, neighbors, family members, and co-workers about statins, most will tell you that they generally started to feel crappy once they started taking statins. I'm talking about fatigue, and a general feeling of ill health.
Yes, there are many many many articles about statins - and the writers generally talk about the severe side effects that kill you. Nobody seems to be talking about the fact that the statins tend to ruin quality of life."
I've been prescribed Atorvastatin and am worried about side effects? I was previously prescribed Simvastatin, but due to nasty side effects (weakness, fatigue, muscle pain) I cam off them, and declined my doctors advice to take another statin.I have had blood tests recently and my cholesterol level has gone back up to 7.4 so he has told me I sholud take another statin, and has prescribed Atorvastatin. Can anyone give me their personal experiences of Atorvastatin, as I am actually quite worried about what these tablets could do to me.
dooberheim replied: "If you have had side effects from one statin, you'll likely have them from another. Do you exercise? Aerobic execise controls my cholesterol pretty well - I don't need medication at this point.

Haje replied: "Trying another statin to avoid side effects, the most well known being muscle pains, could work, I myself would try first paravastatine (if the effect is not enough combined with ezetimibe later on) since this is the statin with the lowest side effects, but atorvastatin is also a very good statin."
Why is it dangerous for ladies to eat lots of grapefruits/juice whilst on Lipitor® (Atorvastatin)...? (Please supply references in your responses to bona fide journals/bulletins).
How much is considered "too much?"
Atorvastatin is one of the statin drugs used to treat some forms of hyperlipidaemia. Its MOA is specific inhibition of HMG-CoA reductase.
Thank you.
PJ replied: "Google atrovastatin and look it up yourself. It is all on-line."
Mmm, forbidden donut replied: "Try it and find out!"
Jen replied: "It slows the liver enzymes that metabolize lipitor???? Leads to high concentration of the drug???
I'd say play it safe and abstain from drinking grapefruit juice altogether.
It's too bitter anyways."
flatbushsam replied: "Grapefruit products are believed to interfere with an enzyme your body uses to break down Lipitor. This means that the drug stays in your body longer when it interacts with grapefruit. In fact, clinical studies have shown that grapefruit can significantly increase the levels of Lipitor in a person's blood.
In one study, drug levels increased by 83 percent in those who drank grapefruit juice three times a day compared to the people who only drank water."

Capricorn12 replied: "I've always wondered why grapefruit juice reacts badly with certain medicines. I mean, why grapefruit juice, as opposed to orange or lime?"
Why LIPITOR (atorvastatin) should not be taken with grape fruit juice? NB: Grape fruit contains potassium !
NB: I don't mean the cytochrome P450 oxidizing system inhibition, it's for sure related to the potassium but why i don't know!
lorraine12937 replied: "grapefryit juice shouldn.t be drank with any pres, drugs it stops the pills from working l it says it on the pres"
DrJames replied: "Hi, grapefruit juice turns off an enzyme detoxification system in the liver. The liver is responsible for clearing out toxins and strange things from the blood. If this detoxification system is turned off, the drug is not cleared as quickly from the blood and stays around much longer. This means you'll have a larger dose of the medication than usual.
Hope this helps!"
The not so funny troll replied: "like dr james said, if you drink large amounts on a regular basis it can alter the way your liver processes the drug and increase the level/amount of time the drug sticks around in your body.
it isnt related to potassium, lipitor doesnt effect it (however many blood pressure meds do). it is related to the CYP450 system. a CYP450 subtype is what breaks down the drug, and the grapefruit juice slows it down which increases levels of the drug. dont know why people gave me a thumbs down, im right..."

crystal & benjamin replied: "atorvastatin is an antilipidemic -which means it controls the amount of fat and cholesterol that circulates in your blood system, not sure about the rest of the question, but if you have a history of stroke, heart attack, or currently have high cholesterol or blood pressure, it is good to be taking it"
