Is a Abilify beneficial to anger issues associated with Bipolar disorder? Or is it specifically for mania? Because my pdoc put my on Abilify for my anger issues and so far it's not doing much. If it's supposed to help however I'll ask for a slightly higher dosage. I'm bipolar II btw, so I don't need it for mania. I've been on it for a month - it helps a little bit, just not as much as other anti-psychotics did. (I quit those because of uncontrollable weight gain.)

Starspecks replied: "although they've classified abilify as an anti-psychotic, it's used for other purposes as well, such as bipolar, and probably as a mood stabilizer--i guess ultimately, all these meds stabilize ones mood to a certain extent... as to how fast it starts working--as with all these types of meds, to get the absolute full effect of it, it should be given a four-six week time span to get into the system. although, i really believe you should feel something by the end of the second week of taking it. it should be taken everyday, just like the doctor prescribed it. it works in some people, but it may not work in others."

American Women replied: "Abilify has become a very common mood stabilizer, and it does help with anger. Most psychotropic medicines take up to 8 weeks to fully start to work. You should be in therapy, and even anger management as well. Bring up your concerns to your DR, they might have to adjust your levels."

sassy replied: "I have recently started taking Abilify along with my depakote. It seems to be working. Last night I could have pulled off one of my yelling in the phone incidents, but............I didn't yeah!!!!!!! I have been taking abilify for a couple of weeks now. I do believe it is helping with my anger. It also suppresses my appetite. Depakote made me hungry. I also take cymbalta."

taking Abilify long term: does the restlessness ever diminish or go away? I am taking Abilify 5mg a day for one month. Does the restlessness feeling, Akathisia, diminish or go away after a time. Also, what are some ways to counteract this feeling without taking more other medication. Abilify helps me alot with feelings of hurt and anger and getting upset. If there is a better med for this I would like to know. I was on lamictal before but unfortunately I developed a rash and had to discontinue. Thank you.

Kris L replied: "Talk to your doctor about this 'feeling of restlessness' you are having. Some medications help, but have something very similar to 'restless leg syndrome' to the point they can't sleep at night. They are given a different sort of pill at bedtime, sleep comfortably, and are not restless during the day. So talk to your doctor AS SOON AS POSSIBLE ... I'm not saying there IS help, but telling you that there may be help, but ONLY if you discuss this with your doctor."

jackie replied: "Like all medicines, everyone reacts differently. That is why you have to be on the right mix of meds for U. Most side effects including but not limited to the reslessness will subside within a month or two. You have to be patient with these meds and give them a chance to work before switching to another med. It will be well worth your patience in the long run. Good luck. I wish you the very best."

How do I control my anger? I'm bipolar and I'm on abilify but it only helps with my hallucinations. When someone irritates me I go completely "psycho" I throw things like acoustic guitars and chairs at people or I have even push and hit kids younger than me. I'm tired of my sister avoiding me and calling me crazy and of my family being scared of me. How do I control my horrible anger problem?

Caroline. :) replied: "Shoot, I do the same thing, and I'm on abilify for hallucinations and delusional thinking. When I get extremely angry I try counting because it gets my mind distracted. It's probably not the best way to control anger but you could try it. :)"

Joe G replied: "The only thing that you can do is maybe some breathe exercises or take a few deep breathes when you start to feel angry. Also I would suggest taking boxing classes, there you can take your angry out on the punching bag and lesson to control yourself alittle more. Or you could go see a doctor, he/she will probably have medication that helps even out your emotions/ or tell you whats causing it."

Bianca C replied: "see cousiler"

my 17 yr old daughter was just perscribed abilify, I am worried about the side effect of suicide thoughts ? I just recently took my teeanger daughter to the daughter, she has severe out rage, she gets mad at the littlest things and cant control her anger, I know she needs counseling but I thought maybe there were something that might mellow her out a little. After reading the side effects, suicide thoughts were one of them, can anyone give me any in puts. thank you

Stuck in the middle of nowhere replied: "What exactly was her diagnosis? Before you let a dr start using her for a medication guinea pig I would get her some good therapy and see if that would help. Sometimes medications do more harm than good."

iciclebubbles01 replied: "If you are worried, ask her doctor the presentage of her getting the side effect. also, keep good eye on her. Check her emails or diary if you can (dude, its mean but hey, never know) to see if shes going on any suidside websites. Send her an email (not telling her its u, use a diffrent adress,) on an article on why suiside is bad."

healthyandhappy21 replied: "Many parents worry about their children after putting them on medications that have side effects like this. We all know that medication is not the answer to our problems but another tool to help us. Realize that this is not a cure. Statistics have proven that a combination of therapy and drugs is more beneficial than medication alone. Consider therapy once a week, or once every other week."

shop2early replied: "I would be worried too. Most antidepressant, can cause suidual thoughts on young people. I would let the Doctor, know of your concerns. I know it would be hard, to watch her 24 and 7. I had to really get into exercising and eating and drinking healthier. You may want to try that. You must pray and continue to pray for strength. I wish you and your Daughter good luck."

TaylorK replied: "There is a great center that can help you, they specialize in womens treatment, addictions, eating disorders etc... Basically all programs just catered to women. Maybe then can help with this"

me4 President replied: "what does she really get angry about , is it something that happened when she was little talk to her and get to the blunt of the problem. How is she acting on the antidepressiant , shaking or calm if she acts like a zombie or has parkinson's syptoms than you need to make sure she is on the right medication but avoid haldol, navane, depokate, prozac, and hisprodaol because they have horrinle side effects"

The AM Diaries replied: "Just keep an eye on her. It takes about a month to get the medicine into your system and for it to start working. If she starts acting up again or seems depressed after taking the medication, it may not be working for her. This would be the time to go back to the doctor. I heard from a child psychologist that about 90% of the time, suicidal thoughts are not a side affect."

billh replied: "rckrhonda: but I thought maybe there were something that might mellow her out a little. We think that too for a few weeks or months if we are very patient. but reality usually hits us square in the forehead and we walk away with any scraps of dignity left. I would advise against asking the doc for the odds of her getting any specific side effects. Side effects odds are helpfull numbers when dealing with entire populations, but a 1/500 risk is 100% if/when it happens to you. plus knowing the odds before starting a med,has a nasty habit of affecting the likelihood of them occurring."

Alice V replied: "I was prescribed abilify when I was seventeen for delusions and hallucinations. It didn't get rid of the hallucinations and it just gave me bad tremors, I was always tired, and I was very sedate all the time. I'm sure she'll be less angry, and probably not suicidal, but be ready for someone very different. She may just seem numb and dead. Good luck."

justjosh'n replied: "i took a different anti depressant once and it made me worse. i felt worse also when i quit taking them because i felt like there was even less hope of me getting better. i would just say keep a distant eye on her and be cautious of the things and people she is around. ex . if she is set up for a stressful day or you know she had one watch her for awhile without being too obvious.. you seem like a loving parent and even i thank you for that and i dont know you"

Trazodone and Abilify? Today I was prescribed Trazodone to help me sleep and Abilify to help with my anger/bipolar. Did you like the outcome you got?..and what were some of your side affects? Thank you for the responses.

Mitchell W replied: "There are side effects of Abilify. If i were you i would buy the generic version to save some money. Abilify is so expensive!!! Side effects that you should report to your doctor or health care professional as soon as possible: allergic reactions like skin rash, itching or hives, swelling of the face, lips, or tongue breathing problems confusion feeling faint or lightheaded, falls increased hunger or thirst increased urination joint pain muscles pain, spasms problems with balance, talking, walking restlessness or need to keep moving seizures suicidal thoughts or other mood changes trouble swallowing uncontrollable head, mouth, neck, arm, or leg movements unusually weak or tired Side effects that usually do not require medical attention : blurred vision constipation headache nausea, vomiting trouble sleeping weight gain The side effects of trazodone might be found here, "

Info about a drug Abilify? My brother took Zaprexa for 3 years and the doc finally took him off of it. I thought everything is going to be fine, he hasn't taken anything for 2 months now, but yesterday he perscribed him Abilify? What for? We thought he won't have to take any drugs anymore. What is Abilify for? Is it used to treat anger?

Captain Feathersword replied: "Stay away...............Effexor much better and a lot safer than Abilify."

fueledbyramennoodles replied: "It's an anti depressant and my psychiatrist put me on it once upon a time. It made me feel awful, like a zombie. I suggest you try to get him off of that before it starts affecting him badly."

wrf3k replied: "Abilify is terrible. I was on it for bipolar disorder. It made me restless, I could not sit still at all, or read because after a sentance or so the words got blurry. I got to experience ADD those few weeks. Stay away from it."

Terry S replied: "Often when a patient has to switch mental health medications there has to be a space of time before starting the new one. This is to ensure the old one is fully gone from your body. If one is taken while the other is still active serious side effects could result. I don't know why you were lead to believe he was done with treatment. I live with bipolar disorder. I am being treated and I understand that I will need some form of treatment for the remainder of my life. Otherwise I will be right back to where I was before treatment and on a fast decline. This may be the same for whatever mental health issue your brother is living with. For more information on Abilify click the link below. Hope I have helped. Sincerely, Terry"

Substitute for Abilify? Hi there I take abilify for my anxiety, ocd, and depression. However I stillsuffer from anger and resentment toward bullies, pedophiles, and random events. I hate abilfy because of the massive increase in appetite. When I don't take the medicine I become extremely depressed and obsessive about events such as the girl I messed up with. I know I wont be depressed in college its just my high school has 11 kids and most of them are juveniles. but I need something to replace my abilify. I don't want to sedate myself on anger pills cuz that will make me have no energy and feel dead. Any subsitutes for depression medication that won't make me extremely hungry?

Pete replied: "I would think that your MD could give you Paxil, Lexapro, Zoloft to help with this condition"

Abilify and insomnia. Does anything help improve sleep while taking Abilify? I have been taking Abilify for about 6 weeks. It has helped me with my racing thoughts, anger issues, and overall has helped me with some mild depression. It has helped me function on the job, with peers, significantly. Several have commented to me that I am much more relaxed than I have been in months. I honestly didn't know I was having the problems I clearly was with mood and behavior. Insomnia and tiredness seem to be my worst symptoms of the Abilify. I switched to taking it in the AM and this has helped with sleep, but it still is not good, maybe averaging 5 hours per night. The restlessness and need to walk almost all the time is worse in the evening for me, and unfortunately I work evenings, but still the benefits greatly outweigh the negatives. I look forward to hearing from some of you with Bipolar 1 Disorder, who are also prescribed Lithium as I am, with your experiences coping with side effects of Abilify.

Kyasarin replied: "I find Abilify makes me very tired so I take it in the evening but I'm still drowsy all day. Sorry to hear about your side effects, I'm told it can take weeks to go away but I would call your doctor and explain that they aren't going away. Good luck."

insanew/nasty intervals ofsanity replied: "sweetie i am on lithium and abilify. although i have bipolar II ultra rapid cycling. the only thing i have found to help with my restlessness and sleeping is a medication my pdoc prescribed for me...seroquel. it also is an anti-psychotic which helps with the bipolar. if i wasn't taking seroquel i would not sleep at all. i even take the abilify in the mornings but it still causes insomnia. i would suggest speaking with your doctor about these unwanted side effects and see if he/she can give you something to help you sleep. do you have whats called restless leg syndrome? if so i have that as well. (it where you have to keep your legs moving, they cant sit still) i take a bata blocker for that. it safer than all the medications out there for the restless leg syndrome. feel free to email me anytime. i wish you all the best! good luck and my you find sleep soon! take care...hugs!"

mldohm replied: "I take Lexapro and Abilify. When I first started the Abilify I was bouncing off the walls and couldn't sleep, either. But in time, like about 3 weeks, things calmed down. It might just not be doing that for you. I've also heard that HIGHER doses of Abilify will not cause as much "jumpiness" and insomnia as lower doses do. Seems strange, but I've read it in several places after Googling "Abilify side effects". Maybe talk to your doctor about increasing the dose for awhile to see if that works better for you. Some people just can't take certain medications because of the side effects. Hope you get things worked out!!"

Andy replied: "I get insomnia from the abilify. To help with it, I take Lunesta 3mg @ bedtime."

What is the best medication for irritability? i went to my doctor today and he suggested paxil but is open to any similar medication.he said he does not want to put me on a mood stabilizer like abilify because of the other medications i take.my big problem is my irritability and anger issues,i need to know what meds have been successful for these symptoms.i would appreciate what medications you are currently taking and if it has helped.he does not want me on mood stabilizers because of its drug interaction with other medication

BuffyV replied: "I take Tripeline and it helps me... but I think everyone reacts differntly to differnt medications"

Princess F replied: "lithium"

let's swim!! replied: "Clonazepam aka Klonopin. Keeps you calm & if yur calm you will less likely to let everything bother you. Try it."

Jo replied: "Newportt, You have a complicated history and have been on a number of medications along with a variety of side effects with most of them. The doctor doesn't want you to get into that circle of medications, interactions and more side effects. So he is giving you one of the older but most effective medications for irritability/anxiety with the fewest side effects. Many folks think that the newer meds are the best ones to use because they are the most updated. In fact, they may have more side effectts and interactions as time goes by, since they're untested out in time with newer medications. So until the newer meds are tested in time many doctors prefer to have the side effects and interactions happen to other doctors patients and be conceConservativeheir use. You might also check with a psychiatrist for use of particular medications. They often have a better overall use with a variety of these medications as these are the only medications they tend to use and they are most familiar with them."

Mathieu replied: "What other medications are you taking aside from Paxil? If you have OCD and irritability/anger problems Paxil my not be the right medication for you and you could have a separate medical problem causing the irritability and anger. Talking to your doctor is a must but knowing what you take and your diagnosis is would be of great help."

Need advice about Abilify.....? My son is 6 and has been on Risperdal for almost a year now, to help with his severe anger outbursts, but he has also gained a large amount of weight. The doctor has now prescribed Abilify to see if that will help prevent more weight gain and still help with the "outbursts". My struggle is with my ex husband. He is totally against using any medications at all and refuses to give our son his medicine when he has visitation with him. He wants to use therapy only. However, we went thru 2 years of different therapies before we opt'd to finally try medicine. I am needing any advice as to if this medicine has either worked or not worked, positives & negatives of it, or any other kind of helpful information that will assure me I am doing what is absolutely best for my child.

Psy.D. replied: "Abilify, by some, is the last line of defense with medications. It is generally useful and used when other meds haven't had the desired effect, or when the side effects are extreme (such as the weight gain you mentioned). Abilify is a safe drug when monitored by a psychiatrist or physician. If you haven't tried cognitive-behavioral therapy for your son, I would try that as soon as possible. It is the most effective form of treatment available, and will very likely demonstrate results in a short amount of time. If you have tried this, then I would say that Ability would be a viable next step. Good luck!"

Kim K replied: "My daughter was on risperdal and she too gained so much weight she went from a size 6x to a 10 within 3 months. She was put on Abilify and didn't work she would still have "rages". She is now on Adderall they tried to change things because the Doctor didn't like how much weight she lost, (over a 1 1/2 yrears she is back to a normal weight)but we came back to the Adderall, it has been working the best. But she has ADHD, Bipolar and OCD. So you just have to work to get their cocktail of meds to work for them."

Hope replied: "It works great for me, no side effects, controls 95% of my symptoms. --- Abilify addresses what none of the other drugs could do for me. Then, again, I am an adult female, with different symptoms. Make sure your Dr. knows that your child will not be getting his medication on the days he's with his dad."

lexi m replied: "I take Abilify at 10 mg. For 6 months it was working well, now I'm having depression come back. I'm an adult female diagnosed with bipolar with psychosis. I don't experience rage (but that wasn't a symptom of my illness). I do not experience weight gain. I liked the med...... but I'm not sure about my current state of mind. Sorry for the mixed news. I personally think it's a good med to try especially for the stable weight. As far as "absolutely best"-- people react differently to the different meds. And going on and off the medication when he is with his father could be very hard on him physically. I would consult with a doctor about that."

pssyct replied: "Don't want to scare you, but Abilify really messed me up. I was completely disoriented, very irritable and totally lost the ability to concentrate on anything or anyone. I promise you that i'm not overexaggerating any of this..it was by far the worst experience i've ever had in my life. With that said, everyone reacts differently, so the best advice I can give is to pay very close attention to the slightest change in behavior..especially "ADD" type symptoms. I hope I didn't freak you out, I just don't want to see it mess anyone else up like it did me. And i'm 34, so i'm thinking it could be even harder for a child to tolerate it. I have a dual diagnosis of bipolar and ADHD, and they switched me to Lithium,Lamictal and Seroquel which have worked perfectly with no side effects whatsoever. Good Luck"
