How long will my Wellbutrin withdrawal symptoms last? I've been on 75mg of Wellbutrin (Bupropion) for about 8 months. I understand this is the lowest dose that is usually prescribed. Anyway, I'm trying to withdraw by taking half a pill (37.5mg) each day instead, but I have this headache and flue like symptoms. It's been 1 day so far. Any idea how long this will last and if my tapering schedule is reasonable?

mcdannells replied: "Hello, It took about a week for me when I was on it and would have to look to see how much and such I was on and I have no clue where that is. I did a huge no no and just stopped, so you are being smarter then I was when I went off of it. The side effects of a seizure scared me for I have seizures.....the doctor obviously did not read my file . Hope this helps?"

placidazure1 replied: "I think that the symptoms are unrelated-it's been too short a time if it's been just one day. Take the half dose for a week, then a quarter dose for a week, then stop. I'm guessing that you're doing this without the knowledge of the prescribing physician,so keep a check on your mood there will you?Got a friend that you can confide in that can help you with that?"

teacherspet2106 replied: "Are you taking Wellbutrin XR (extended release) b/c those you aren't suppose to cut. Tapering off Wellbutrin isn't as necessary as an SSRI. I was on 450 milligrams and I just tapered by 150 and when I hit 150 I stopped. I'm guessing your symptoms aren't related to your tapering."

How soon can I expect withdrawal symptoms from Wellbutrin? I've been on Wellbutrin XL for 4 years now, 300mg once daily. I've run out of medication. Anyone have any idea how soon I can expect to see any or all of the withdrawal symptoms I've read about?

inaudiblemelodies replied: "As someone who has been on wellbutrin for nearly 6 years, I would say you'll start to experience minor withdrawal symptoms after about 3 or 4 days. Although, you may not experience full-blown withdrawal for 2 or 3 weeks. Just be careful though, this is not a medication you can come off of cold-turkey."

What are the symptoms from Wellbutrin XR withdrawal? I've been taking Wellbutrin XR for six months. I started on 150 mgs then went to 300 mgs. When I talked to my doctor about getting off it (caused horrible anxiety for me) he put me on 150 again so the withdrawal effects wouldn't be so harsh. What are people's experiences with getting off this drug? How long do they last?

Sick replied: "(I am not a doctor and this is not official medical advice) I am not aware of any withdrawal effects, but each person is affected differently. The bigger issue is probably dealing with the problem for which you were prescribed the wellbutrin in the first place. Depression, for example, can be very harsh on its own. If you sincerely believe that this is a withdrawal effect and not a depression or medical issue, the thing to do is to taper it off slowly. Try wellbutrin SR which is a suspended release form, and try it in the 100 mg dose. Gradually space out your doses until you aren't taking it very much. If you are still having issues, you might need a different medication. From an article here: "The discontinuation syndrome is most common with those drugs that have a short half-life (how long it takes for half the drug to clear from your body). Venlafaxine (Effexor), tricyclics, MAOIs and most SSRIs can cause symptoms. Fluoxetine (Prozac) is the one SSRI which generally does not cause problems because it has a half-life of 2-4 days and it's primary metabolite has a half-life of 4-16 days. This long half- life gives it a built in tapering off. The syndrome is rarely seen in the newer medications, nefazodone (Serzone), bupropion (Wellbutrin) and mirtazapine (Remeron). ""

JP replied: "Stopping Wellbutrin abruptly may result in discontinuation syndrome expressed as dystonia, irritability, anxiety, mania, headache, aches and pains. As you are not stopping treatment abruptly, you might not even have any discontinuation syndrome, and if you get any symptoms once you're completely off the drug, it is unlikely to be severe or last longer than a week. It is even ok to stop Wellbutrin abruptly and the chances are you won't have any severe withdrawal symptoms. This is not to be confused with SSRI's and other classes of antidepressants which can induce a nightmare even with adequately tampered withdrawal. Wellbutrin is quite unique in it's mechanism of action, but it didn't work for me either, caused a massive panic attack. In regards to your other question which is in voting (hope you choose a best answer for this one!), both weight gain and weight loss can happen with Trazodone, weight loss can happen with Wellbutrin, and Xanax generally increases the appetite, especially for fatty foods. If your diet hasn't changed, your most likely offender is Trazodone."

Thomas G replied: "They last depending on long you took them. AND ssri withdrawal is serious. You can go into this syndrome called "serotonin syndrome""

Did you or do you have Wellbutrin Withdrawal symptoms? I stopped it about 2 weeks ago and am not feeling like withdrawal is kicking in: a couple of crying spells, feeling depressed, diarrea, neausea. I know this sounds like pregnancy symptoms too, but I have stopped my meds before and have had these symptoms. Has anyone else experienced this? Serious answers only please

Phoenix replied: "Yes, lots of people have these kinds of withdrawal symptoms with anti-depressants."

Sheilah b replied: "Yes my mother in law stopped taking wellbutrin suddenly and she got really sick. You have to be taken off slowly. She thought she just had the flu until she went to the doctors and they told her you cant do that with certain anti depressants"

Has anyone experienced withdrawal symptoms from Wellbutrin XL? I just found out that I am pregnant about 2 weeks ago and have stopped taking Wellbutrin XL by the advice of my psychiatrist and OB-GYN.

Common Sense replied: "Nope.. This is probably just hormones from the pregnancy.."

shazzawazza replied: "Sounds like a bit of both. Most anti-depressants have withdrawal symptoms, especially in the higher doses and if you have been taking them for a long time. Consult your doctor and see if it's safe to slowly wean yourself off them instead of going cold turkey. Pregnancy obviously has severe effects on your moods and hormone levels so you might just need a bit of reassurance from your doctor to stick it out and find some drug-free methods of easing your symptoms. Also, once the baby arrives visit your doctor regularly to watch out for early signs of post-natal depression. People with a prior history are more at risk and it's easily dealt with if spotted early. PS. Congratulations. xx"

ladybug replied: "Took Wellbutrin XL for several years and had no problem when I just stopped. Probably just your hormones trying to adjust. GOOD LUCK! :)"

What are the Symptoms of Torrette's Syndrome? Could Wellbutrin be the side of affects of it? Is Torrette's Syndrome (a side effect) of Wellbutrin?

Diana replied: "This link may be helpful: it doesn't really says about wellbutrin"

Wellbutrin SR withdrawal symptoms possible after 2 months? Took it everyday for 1 and half month and the next two weeks I took it every third day until I stopped. Is it possible to have withdrawal symptoms even if not being on it for such a long time.I was prescribed klonopin and xanax to be taken. Each 0.5 mg three times daily but my anxiety is getting worse because I am worrying about addiction.

Erryn B replied: "You can talk to a pharmacist or doctor to be sure, but no, if you've been off of it that long, you won't be having withdrawal symptoms. Are you in counselling for the anxiety? Since the wellbutrin isn't the cause, maybe you need to look for other causes. Talk to your doctor about getting a referral. Long-term klonopin and xanax are not the way to go! If things are still bad, maybe another antidepressant? Best of luck. Get some help for yourself - you deserve it."

What symptoms have you experienced with Wellbutrin? It makes me nauseous,my taste for anything and everything has diminished, I am tired a lot, and I feel like I have been kicked by a horse in the back of my neck, causing an unbearable headache that stems from that point through my jawline, and into my temples. I am taking this to aid smoking cessation, as I do not suffer from depression. Any input from a nurse, or any personal experience with this will be greatly appreciated.

lucia replied: "From my experience with having taken this drug for a brief time (could not handle the side effects which were very similar to yours), I tried Nicorette Gum (this was after trying the patches, which were too strong) Since the gum, I haven't smoked for 12 years, and had smoked 1 to 2 pks per day for over 30 years. Wellbutrin is NOT as benign a drug as doctors and pharmaceutical companies would have you think! Those unpleasant side effects are telling you something.. Listen and good luck."

gangadharan_nair replied: "Bupropion (Wellbutrin, Wellbutrin SR, Wellbutrin XL) is used to treat depression. Bupropion (Wellbutrin XL) is also used to treat seasonal affective disorder (SAD; episodes of depression that occur in the fall and winter each year). Bupropion (Zyban) is used to help people stop smoking. Bupropion is in a class of medications called antidepressants. It works by increasing certain types of activity in the brain. Bupropion may cause side effects. Tell your doctor if any of these symptoms are severe or do not go away: * drowsiness * excitement * dry mouth * dizziness * headache * nausea * vomiting * uncontrollable shaking of a part of the body * weight loss * constipation * excessive sweating Some side effects can be serious. If you experience any of the following symptoms or those listed in the IMPORTANT WARNING section, call your doctor immediately: * seizures * confusion * hallucinating (seeing things or hearing voices that do not exist) * irrational fears * fever * rash or blisters * itching * hives * swelling of the face, throat, tongue, lips, eyes, hands, feet, ankles, or lower legs * hoarseness * difficulty breathing or swallowing * chest pain * muscle or joint pain * rapid, pounding, or irregular heartbeat Please see the web pages for more details on Bupropion (generic name) Wellbutrin (brand name)."

Wellbutrin withdrawal symptoms? After missing one dose of Wellbutrin (resuming the next day) I have felt bizarre (confused, detached, weird) for several days now. Is this a possible fallout of missing only a single dose, or most likely something different? I take 100mg every evening. So in other words, that was a normal reaction?

Nikki replied: "Most likely no. You should call your doctor. It could be side effects of the medication if you are feeling spacey. Good luck."

sexy replied: "if your coming off them you need to be weened off them, what you felt was reaction of your body not having them in your system, if your on them stay on them and stop playing with them your on them for a chemical in balance ,"

Glimmer replied: "I have skipped a day many times(bad bad) but haven't had any experience like that. That sounds like something you need to talk to your doc, therapist, whatever about. I get headaches sometimes when missing a dose but that's it. If you have been on the med for awhile you should have enough built up in your system that one dosage missed wouldn't have that effect on you. Talk to someone now so that nothing worse happens. Good luck!"

What are the normal Wellbutrin withdrawal symptoms? I started taking Wellbutrin 100 mg or bupropion two weeks ago and then after 3 days upped the dose to 200 mg. The medicine worked great the first few days then I started feeling strange and very tired. Stopped the medicine cold turkey and now experiencing weird symptoms like my face is flushed, head feels like it is filled with helium, lips tingling, ears ringing, chest pains, body aches, leg pains, back aches. Just about every part of my body seems affected. Is this normal? Anybody else experienced anything like this? What really stinks is I have to work like this. If it continues, I may have to get a medical release. I have to make to Friday and I hope my symptoms get better before then. Never felt like this before.
