What pecentage of patients on Celexa gain weight? I don't care if I gain 5 lbs but, I would be upset if I put on 25 lbs. How common is weight gain on Celexa. I'm on 20 mg right now?

I just got put on 20mg of lexapro, after being on 40mg of celexa for almost a year. Will it cause weight gain? I didnt gain any weight on celexa, im 16, active, and thin.

Would a low dose of Celexa cause weight gain? I am considering taking 10 MGS of Celexa for GAD. I have taken others (at much higher doses and gained TONS weight). I slowly tapered off of Zoloft (125 MGS) over the course of a month and it's been about a month since my last dose, and do not believe I need such large doses as I now also take anti-anxiety medication that has really helped (I resisted those for years). Would a low dose of Celexa be a good augmenter without uncontrollable weight gain? I'm on 5 MGS right now, and want to go up to 10. I won't take Lexapro because the dosing options are inflexible and I also don't have insurance. I am working strictly with my doc on the tapering,and am always in contact with him before any changes are made. I ask him. and then he makes the decisions.

BigJRules replied: "First off, you should never dose your own SSRI's. Depression relapse and suicide are huge risks of doing this. Celexa, from everything I have read, does not cause weight gain. In controlled studies vs. Placebo, those on Celexa lost .5-1.0kg over those on Placebo."

How can I battle weight gain while taking Celexa? I've been taking Celexa for about a year now. I like the effect of the pill and I don't want to stop taking it. Will I gain weight on Celexa? I have General anxiety disorder and Social anxiety disorder. I've never taken any anti-depressants before, but yesterday my doctor prescribed me Citalophram or whatever, which is Celexa. He's starting me on half a pill a day, which is 10mgs. Will I gain weight? I've read stories on here of people gaining 20-90 pounds, which is ridiculous. I'm scared of taking it because I don't want to gain weight.

agirlfromeastcounty replied: "It really depends on the person. I've been on medications like that were they've said I'll gain weight, and I end up losing weight. The only thing you can do is to watch your weight and if you do start to, stop taking it. Or do what I do, make them find you a medicine that is weight neutral. Or ask for prozac which treats those and also doesn't make you gain weight."

xquizite_pink replied: "i used to take celexa 4 years ago... i tried to commit suicide while i was on it.. i really recommend not taking any anti depressants as they are really bad for u.. they mess you up. once u start taking them it gives u this high.. a high of happiness.. u get addicted to this high and if u think ur ok and want to get off of them.. ur body will literallly shut down.. i tried to go off of them and i couldnt sleep.. i literally could not sleep i couldnt focus/concentrate.. i was geting straight A's during mid terms and by finals i failed all my courses because i simsply coudnt do anyting i couldnt eat and then i started drinking so i can pass out n sleep and athen i got addicted to alchol and anti depressants... taking these 2 together can basicaly kill u.. i ended up in the hospital more that semester then i ever did my whole entire life.. it is very hard to try to get off of them.. u shud talk to councellors or a therapist instead n find another means of handling ur anxiety.. working out is great.. i used to have horrible panic attacks but sincei ve started working out i stopped getting them... pleaseeee dont take anti depreesants i watched my life fall so bad within 1 year i went from having everyting to having nothing.. no school no job, no family... geting pregnant.. having an abortion. which i now regret.. and getting arrested for stupidness i did.. and now i cant get a good job untill i get my pardon. it took me all that before i realized how bad these anti depressants are.. ive been off of trhem for 4 years now and i feel great i graduate from my program in pharmaceutical chem analyst in dec 2008.. yet i stil have to wait to get my pardon takin care of to get a job"

Celexa, weight gain, and poor sex drive? I have been taking Celexa for about 4 months now (5 kids from age 13-1, that should explain it) and since i started taking it i have put on like 20 lbs and i have NO sex drive what so ever and its put a strain on my relationship. Is this normal? Should i switch to something else?

Nancy T replied: "This is pretty normal for any medication...I was in your same situation and tried everything to restore it. I switched pills a couple times and gave up, the libido was just not coming back. I then found a natural herbal enhancer that is supposed to increase your sex drive and a couple other things. It's called Hersolution gel, read up about it at herenhancement.com where I saved on it at the time. However it's like an instant libido rush and as I kept using it my sex drive was through the roof and continues to be. The sensation blast is great too, I can't tell you how many times I've had multiple orgasms when before I couldn't even get a single one. Theres also capsules you can take that I've heard are better but I don't like swallowing many pills throughout the day. I was skeptical at first but the return policy was so great that the company was offer. weight gain from Celexa? (Lexapro)? Did anyone gain weight using Celexa...Lexapro is similar to Celexa. I'm 25 years old and never ever did I gain weight from anything. I used to weight 112 lbs being 5.2. Now about a year later I'm 125.

Viper replied: "Very common. Maybe you could try bupropion (wellbutrin), it doesn't have the weight gain, like the class your on. Most psychiatrists do not like adding medications like the person below me suggested. Bupropion works on a different subset of receptors than Lexapro does. Your doctor will probably suggest you get off the Lexapro and then start the Bupropion, and if that doesn't work, then he might add the second medication."

Paul A replied: "I take generic Wellbutrin SR (150 mg) in the morning, and Lexapro (10 mg) with dinner, for depression and anxiety. I've been taking that for over two years, and it's working very well for me. The Wellbutrin SR seems to help me to be more alert and active - and wanting to do things - while the Lexapro makes me more mellow, and it helps me sleep better, too. They are relatively low doses of each medication, which keeps side effects at a minimum. I really can't tell I'm taking any medication at all. The last time I was in the doctor office, I had lost 8 lbs - not a lot, but in the right direction. I give the Wellbutrin SR the credit for the weight loss, since it does help me to be more active. You could probably add the Wellbutrin SR to your Celexa, and maybe drop your Celexa dose a little to make up for it. The Wellbutrin SR really does a lot to help "get me going"."

I spoke to my doctor about it and he added Topomax to my long list of medications, and Topomax has acted like an appetite suppressant. It helped me lose most of the weight I had gained and has prevented me from gaining anymore. I recommend that you talk to your doctor about adding Topomax with the Celexa, try it, it might help. Also weight gain is more likely in long term use and not short term ... so just monitor your weight and discuss any worries with your doctor during your follow up appointments."

Ilana K replied: "You can experience wt gain on any SSRI (Celexa, Lexapro, Zoloft, Prozac, etc) altough average weight change over a year is about 2-3 lbs. Wt gain does not usually happen in the first few months and it is not something that just happens - some people start craving carbs more and eat more. Nothing happens overnight though, so monitor your wt and if you see it creeping up address it with your doctor."
