Venlafaxine Effexor Effexor Xr in Q&A
What is the worst I can expect while my body withdraws from Venlafaxine (Effexor XR) 150 mg cold turkey? Due to a few reasons I discontinued the use of Effexor XR about 4 days ago now. I had been taking my highest dosage of 150 mg, for about 3 months up until this point. I started getting the brain zaps, cold chills, nausea etc, only about 6 hours after my first discontinued dose, it is terrible withdraw but seems to be getting slightly better each day. I am just curious how long I can expect these withdraw symptoms and the severity of them? I am only 21 and fairly active and healthy guy.

KolleenRodgers90 replied: "i took this same dosage at the age of 17 and had to quite cold turkey because i got prego. but it sucked i went crazy seriously my mom was tryin to get me on something but i couldn't be on it i just went from very calm to very stressed n not stop talkin it was weird never b on meds like that again! i will figure something out"

melly180 replied: "I am currently on Effexor. I'm 17 and I'm on a 70 mg dose. You should have never just stopped cold turkey. the best thing to do is to slowly reduce your dose i.e. take half the 150 dose for a week or two, then half of that until you're down to barely anything. i have gone off it cold turkey, and got the same symptoms. i got a lot of shaking, nausea, chills, very depressive/suicidal, dizzy, and just felt overall fucked up. i also slowly got off the dose as well, but felt that it still made me very depressed without it (more than usual). so i am back on it. i am not sure how long your symptoms will last. try looking withdrawal symptoms up for Effexor or make an appointment at the doctor for more information."

is there any reason why I should not take the generic version of effexor xr (venlafaxine HCl)? I want to switch to the generic because it is cheaper. Is it just as good or is there any reason to be concerned about taking it?

phil replied: "there is nothing to be concerened about"

Marco B replied: "No, but the XR generic isn't available yet, only the immediate release is available now."

Maabuu replied: "see for reference"

fiVe replied: "The generic of any medication is exactly the same as the original except for the fillers sometimes. The interactive chemicals are the same so it should have the same result for less money. I noticed no difference switching from Wellbutrin XL to the generic."

What are the differences between Effexor XR and its generic version of venlafaxine? I was on Effexor for years and loved it. About a year or so ago my general practioner told me to swtich to something else for reasons that don't matter. My psych switched me to Cymbalta, but it has never worked as well for me as the Effexor did. But my general prac. was still convinced the Effexor was eafecting my physical health (although we later found out this wasnt the case) so I sadly stuck with the Cymbalta. Anyways, recently I became a part time student rather than a full time student, meaning I am no longer covered by my parents insurance and the new insurance i am on sucks and makes us pay like $250 a month for my cymbalta because it isnt generic. I found out that there is now a generic version of Effexor and was overjoyed. I called my psych and explained everything and he agreed to start be back on the generic Effexor. Problem is, I went to CVS to pick it up and it wasnt the generic, it was regular Effexor XR and they charged me over $200. I talked to the pharmacist and he said this is because the pharmacist doesnt have the authority to just give me the generic like he does with other meds because the venlafaxine (the generic effexor) comes in tablet form, while Effexor XR comes in capsule. This, for some reason, makes them different medications, even though they do they the same thing/have same side effects. Has anyone switched from Effexor XR capsules to the generic tablets? And if so, how has the experience been for you? I'm calling my psych tomorrow and hopeing he'll call the pharm and correct it and I can either return my unopened bottle or the insurance company will do something. LET ME KNOW PLEASE! Thanks for all the help everyone! Just wanted to clarify (I know I tend to ramble), I *have* to be on a generic, I just can't afford it otherwise on my new really crappy insurance. And although, yes, I remember the terrible withdrawl side effects of missing a dose of Effexor, the pros totally outweigh the cons. So I will call my psych tomorrow and tell him to write me a prescript for the generic tablets (which I believe are also time release but maybe not as long acting as the capsules), and as for this 90 day supply of Effexor XR 75mg I have, if the pharmacy or my insurance won't take it, I guess I'll just toss it. THANKS AGAIN!

Stephen replied: "I guess the difference is in the delivery. when Efexor came out it had to be taken twice daily and side effects were common. so the company made an extended release form Efexor XR. once daily and less side effects. The drug is out od patent but not the delivery system (I think) so the generic form will not be slow release. this may not cause problems for you but it might."

summer replied: "i can't answer your whole question but i had a similar problem with a medication being capsules verses tablets and the and the hugely different expense, what was supposed to be $4 was a lot higher so they told me to have my doctor call in and tell them to switch to the cheaper one and she did and it worked."

b_bardi99 replied: "i was on Effexor XR for many years, and i switched to the generic one as soon as it was available(a couple years ago) The generic medication:Venlafaxine IS available in XR,meaning extended release.I just looked at the box:Novo-Venlafaxine XR I was on vacation in another country, when i ran out of my Effexor ER,and i had to switch to the tablets, that are not extended release. It was OK,i had to take several pills throughout the day. Don't ever stop taking effexor "cold turkey". Call the Dr tomorrow,if you are on a high dose of Effexor, its a pain in the neck to take several pills during the day. The generic drug is out there,in a capsule!"

sweetiepie replied: "I just went through this with another drug. The name brand extended release was almost $300/month and the generic was $10/month. But the generic is not extended release so I have to take more doses of it during the day. It also screwed up my heart rate and BP because I got troughs between doses (highs and lows)--not a steady release like an extended release does. So call your psychiatrist and tell him you need the generic equivalent but be prepared to take more doses throughout the day if it's not XR. And be punctual taking it! Good luck. And make sure your psychiatrist knows it's for insurance reasons!"

JILL replied: "I find Effexor XR to be better...there are less side effects, and if I had a choice between generic and XR, I'd still choose XR. I quit Effexor XR, but I may need to get back on it again."

Lea replied: "First, you cannot return prescription medications to the pharmacy. It is illegal. Effexor XR capsules are still on patent. The first generic Effexor XR capsules should be available by the end of the year. However, Effexor XR tablets are not on patent, and are available generically. To get this medication, your prescriber must write it as Venlafaxine XR tablets. If he just writes Effexor XR; that'll mean he wants the capsules. "

Am I going to gain weight while taking Effexor XR? Effexor XR is venlafaxine HCI (37.5 mg for the first week, then 75 mg from then on), a medication for anxiety and depression. One of the side effects is loss of appetite, but I know everyone has different reactions. Anyone have any experience with this medication?

LINDSEY replied: "I just tried to stop taking Effexor XR. Make sure you're aware of the withdrawal symptoms!!I thoughtg there wassomething seriously wrong with me. I was extremely dizzy and nauseous. It worked wonders on my depression but now I have to slowly ween myself off of it."

what's the maximum dose of Venlafaxine xl [Effexor xl/xr] ? from what i've seen on the net the max' is 225mg, but my psychiatrist is putting me on 300mg.

daddyrx replied: "All the information that I have been able to find indicates a max. daily dose of 225mg. Dosages above that have not shown any increases in efficacy but have been associated with increased incidences of side effects."

Jenny S replied: "I took 375mgs for a while...."

Tim replied: "Yeah I've heard of people going over the max. It depends on the person and the tolerance they have for the drug. Its not like some drugs where going overboard can be fatal."

Ivan H replied: "Yeah, although 225 mg was the max that was first set for daily use, psychiatrists found that off label they could use much higher doses, in excess of 300, indeed, and many psychiatrists had superb effects at these otherwise "high doses." When Effexor XR came out psychiatrists would often gingerly start at 75 mg and then move up for most patients, but in a young, healthy patient with normal renal and hepatic function, it''s fairly routine to start with 150 mg daily and then escalate if need be versus consider adding something like Abilify 5 or 10 mg."

Scorpio Wild Card replied: "I took 375 mg, but that was back in '03. It really didn't help me that well, but some it does. Medication can vary, with the dosage, it can vary. For example, Zyprexa 15 mg tid (3 times daily) is suppose to be the max dose, but I was on Zyprexa 15 mg 4 a day at one time... And Klonopin, I was on 10 mg on at one time, yes 10 mg. So it really varies. I'm taking Invega 6mg and will soon be moved to 9mg... so it varies."

Did effexor xr change the way their pills look? I picked up my bottle of pills at the pharmacy today and noticed that my 75mg of effexor looks different....it used to be long a peach pill with red letters on it...now it's these round pink pills. The label used to read effexor but but now it says venlafaxine HCL...did effexor change or did I get the wrong perscription?

tom replied: "yes a big change"

sewhalen replied: "What you received is the generic brand of the drug Effexor, that's why the name 'venlafaxine HCL' instead of the Brand Name of Effexor. It should have been cheaper for you, considering it's the generic brand. It's still Effexor though, so don't be afraid to take it, it's safe."

Lea replied: "You just got switched to the generic. Meaning, your drug bill is going to drop a lot. The drug is exactly the same."

jloertscher replied: "you got the wrong medicine friend. Plain Effexor has a generic. Effexor XR does not."

Is it safe to take half a vicodin if I am on Effexor? My tooth is killing me and I can't get to the dentist until Monday. I have some Vicodin left over from a previous injury, can I take it if i am on Effexor? Is it safe, in your opinion. I researched it on drugs.com and it said: hydrocodone (Ingredient of Vicodin HP) and Effexor XR (venlafaxine) (Moderate Drug-Drug) I have taken aleve and advil and they aern't doing anything.

Mopar Muscle Gal replied: "it should be ok only take 1/2"

atn913 replied: "It isn't a problem to do so, but be aware that you may have more pronounced side affeects such as increased sleepiness OR excitability."

Generic Effexor XR !Help Please! I'm currently taking Effexor XR, but I will be getting married soon and will be off my parents insurance. Does anybody know when generic Effexor XR comes out? I realize there is already generic venlafaxine, but I'm asking specifically about the XR varient. Also, does anybody know why Venlafaxine (not XR) is not included on Wal-mart's cheap perscription drug list? Thanks!

knuckleheadboy replied: "I don't know when the XR will be available--it is still under patent. Even though venlafaxine is the generic it is still so expensive everywhere. I took it too, until I changed insurance and my co-pay for XR is $130 a month. I actually don't see much difference in the generic and I really needed the med. Hope I helped."

SUSAN K replied: "natural antidepressants are cheaper and better omega 3 is one read success stories on curezone.com"

Effexor withdrawal timeline? General advice? Hi - If you have stopped taking Effexor/Venlafaxine, how long did it take to get over withdrawal symptoms? Also, what dose were you on and how did you taper down? I know experiences vary per person - I'm mainly looking to get a general idea so I can estimate my own recovery. About me: I've been on Effexor XR (75mg) for roughly 4.5 years and have decided to get off it (under a doctor's care). I was taking 75mg, then switched to 37.5mg for two weeks. I took the last pill Wednesday 8/5. I'm getting all the usual symptoms. Friday (day 2) I had to leave work early. Today is day 3 and I'm pretty miserable. I've spent much of the day in bed. (I haven't eaten properly in a few days so I'm weak from that as well.) Years ago I took Zoloft and stopped cold turkey, that was unpleasant but nowhere near as bad as this. I could probably taper down on Effexor even further by opening the capsules or switching to another drug but at this point I would prefer to just ride out the withdrawal rather than prolong it. I'll be seeing my doctor again on Wednesday In retrospect it was a mistake to start the Effexor. I had just graduated college, was unemployed, and was only mildly depressed. Any small lift I got from the Effexor wasn't worth what I'm going through now. Well I fell off the wagon. I gave in and took half a pill (~18mg). I guess I'll continue taking partial doses depending on how bad I feel. I don't want to use up all my vacation time being sick in bed...

Emma's mommy replied: "I was on Effexor and I was taking 150 MG and I decided to stop cold turkey. I decided that I didn't want to rely on medication and that I wanted to beat this depression on my own, and the withdrawal symptoms I experienced were pure hell. They were so bad, that I ended up on a locked psych ward for over a week. Your withdrawal symptoms could last a week or two... It's just getting through the withdrawal symptoms that's really hard. Stopping my medication made me get the most intense suicidal thoughts ever. I couldn't eat. I could barely drag myself out of bed in the morning. I really hope you feel better soon and just know that the withdrawal symptoms won't last forever"

Doug S replied: "when I came off it I basically waitted until the first sign that I was going to start not feeling well, then take one to make me feel better, then wait as long as I could again, again, and again, each time it gets longer, it too me about 3 weeks, I had been on it for a little over a year"

The Medicine, Can you give me details thanks.? Pill: Effexor XR (Venlafaxine HCI) What would happen if you took three pills and Drank alcohol, could this do damage? Could this get you high. I'm not doing it but my friend is, Does anyone have proff it can get you high or dizzy, or fucked up. I want to help my friend. thanks

Mathieu replied: "Effexor can not in anyway cause people to get high, become euphoric, or have any psychedelic effects. Effexor is not a controlled substance in any jurisdiction (in any country) because it can not cause substance abuse, substance dependence, or addiction. Drugs like Valium, Xanax, Morphine, Oxycodone (Percocet, OxyContin), Hydrocodone (Vicodin, Lortab), Amphetamine (Adderall, Dexedrine), and some other drugs are legally controlled substances but Effexor is NOT. Depending on the dose three pills and alcohol could cause problems like seizure, especially when the alcohol wore off. It is not likely to kill unless he drinks a vast amount of alcohol. It could cause dizziness, but certainly not in any "good" way. Effexor can help with depression but it can't be abused. Taking too much and with alcohol can only cause problems."
