I was prescribed Trileptal 300mg for anger and axiousness, when I looked it up it was for seizeures, HELP!? I am not epileptic and I've never had a seizure in my life, why would the doctor prescribe this? I looked everywhere and could not find anything about anger/anxiety associated with this drug.

CC replied: "Many drugs have multiple uses. I really wouldn't worry about it. A member of my family takes anti-seizure medication that is also useful for many other maladies. I really wouldn't worry about it, but if it concerns you, ask your doctor or call a pharmacist - pharmacists are incredible sources of information. Doesn't have to be a pharmacist you normally go to; just call."

curlyQ replied: "Relax- Trileptal is an AED, yes. It is also used to control anxiety in lower doses however. Call your pharmacist or doctor for their reassurance. Link below may help you understand. Best wishes!"

Can i really take zoloft 50mg even if i am dependent with trileptal 300mg (twice a day) for 3 years already? i have seizure because of brain surgery (AVM). after the operation i have the seizure so i have trileptal 300mg, my doc said it's a life-time medicine already. lately i always have panic attack and numbness on my face. and having anxiety attack. my doctor prescribe zoloft 50mg once a day. what i'm scared of using zoloft was the possibility of triggering my seizure. my doctor haven't discuss about it. can i really take zoloft even if i am dependent with trileptal?i'm scared of having seizure. here in the philippines people are unaware about seizure. my last seizure/tremor, someone still stole my celphone instead of helping me. so it's more priority of not having seizure instead of fixing my panic attack/anxieties. but if can fix those two much better, i hope i can have normal life. huh.. pls help..

Mary Boo replied: "I WILL PRAY FOR YOU TO HAVE A NORMAL LIFE. TRAIL THE ZOLOFT ONCE A DAY. IF IT DON'T WORK OUT CALL THE DOCTOR. GOD BE WITH YOU."

how long does 300mg of trileptal medication take to go away? same as above.

CUSTARD PIE replied: "a 300mg dosage will take 9 hours to metabolize. 95% will escape through urine, the rest through fecal matter and broken down through digestion. taken for partial seizures most generally."

Is Trileptal approved by the FDA to be a mood stabilizer besides just being an anti-convulsant? I was given Trileptal 300mg as a mood stabilizer. I was just wondering if this is approved by the FDA as a mood stabilizer. I went to the official website,, and it says nothing about this drug being used as a mood stabilizer for psychiatric disorders. All I see is that it is used for epilepsy and seizures. I have experienced dizziness and almost fainted one time with it. I take trileptal 300mg once a day. By the way, should I get a an attorney and file a lawsuit against my doctor and the drug she prescribed me if it is not approved by the FDA to be a mood stabilizer and for the side effects that I have experienced?

rob_harwell replied: "I would only use extra money for that. If you need it for food, then I would spend it on that instead."

beautifully_broken_1994 replied: "TRILEPTAL is an antiepileptic drug that has been approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and is indicated for use as monotherapy (by itself) or adjunctive therapy (taken with other medications) in the treatment of partial seizures in adults and children 4 years of age and older with epilepsy and as adjunctive therapy in the treatment of partial seizures in children ages 2 years and older with epilepsy. You may have thoughts about suicide while taking this medication. Your doctor will need to check you at regular visits. Do not miss any scheduled appointments. Trileptal Side Effects Get emergency medical help if you have any of these signs of an allergic reaction: hives; difficulty breathing; swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat. Trileptal can reduce the sodium in your body to dangerously low levels, which can cause a life-threatening electrolyte imbalance. Contact your doctor right away if you have nausea, vomiting, weakness, thirst, loss of appetite, headache, confusion, hallucinations, muscle pain or weakness, and/or increased or more severe seizures. Call your doctor at once if you have any new or worsening symptoms such as: mood or behavior changes, depression, anxiety, or if you feel agitated, hostile, restless, hyperactive (mentally or physically), or have thoughts about suicide or hurting yourself. Call your doctor at once if you have any of these serious side effects: *sore throat, and headache with a severe blistering, peeling, and red skin rash; *jaundice (yellowing of the skin or eyes); *fever, swollen glands, flu-like symptoms; *easy bruising or bleeding, unusual weakness; *urinating less than usual or not at all; or *increased seizures. Less serious side effects may include: *mild nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, diarrhea; *problems with speech, balance, or coordination; *blurred vision; * mental slowness, trouble concentrating; *tremors or shaking; *dizziness, drowsiness; or *skin rash. This is not a complete list of side effects and others may occur. Tell your doctor about any unusual or bothersome side effect. Trileptal (oxcarbazepine) is currently FDA-approved only for use in treating certain types of seizure disorders. However, for many years, this drug has been used in Europe as a mood-stabilizer for patients with bipolar disorder. Okay, So I just looked up this information for you. And according to most of the sites, it is also used for a mood stabilizer. (mostly used in bi polar disorder) In bi polar you are constantly having ups and downs. -Not saying your bi polar. And I have been put on an anti-depressant before which was used for seizures. So don't worry. It is used for moods too. And the dizziness you are experiencing is one of the side effects. It was also happening to me when I was on certain medications. You need to tell your doctor about this dizziness. I got dizzy usually when I stood up. Even if I got up slowly. Just tell your doctor. You will probably have to get put on a different medicine. Hope I helped. Take Care Kendra <3"

Smartassawhip replied: "All anti-convulsants have some mood stabilizing properties, some more that others. Whether a medicine is approved by the FDA to be prescribed for a disorder does not mean as much as lay people think it does. Medicines have to be FDA approved for something before a doctor can prescribe them but a doctor can prescribe them for other things too. Being FDA approved for a specific illness requires a drug company to do very expensive testing. As an example, there is an anti-allergy medicine that says in it's commercials that it is the only one FDA approved for both indoor and outdoor allergies. That's true, but meaningless. All anti-allergy medicines are antihistamines and work on all allergies, whether indoor or outdoor. The question for you is whether the medicine is being effective with mood stablizing and whether there are side effects that are too difficult to deal with. If the medicine is not effective or the side effects are too bad then the doctor needs to try another medicine. With Bipolar Disorder it is not unusal for the doctor to have to try several different medicines before he finds the one that is the most effective for you and has the least or no side effects. Your doctor has done nothing for you to sue about. I hope that something that I have written has been helpful."

hotchick replied: "contact poison control"

nwjerseygirl replied: "Call the emergency room and ask to speak to a nurse. Tell her the problem and she should be able to advise you."

jasonjas replied: "number on bottle for poison control."

AngelKidd+JeffKidd replied: "you need to get advice from a pharmist or a medical facility."

bookish replied: "My god, it scares me that someone would be typing a question on yahoo answers when her child could have a serious medical problem. Call your pediatrician or call the ER. NOW!!"

ciamalo replied: "You should call a pharmacist or Doctor. The last thing you should do is finish reading this, on Yahoo answers. You should already be dialing."

Bandicoot replied: "Pharmacist and or poison control ASAP Act quickly, do not panic"

W W D replied: "First, try not to panic. How big are the kids? If the one taking it is smaller than the one it's prescribed for, it might be a problem, and you'll feel better if you talk to somebody about it. If you're in the US, almost everywhere the number for Poison Control is 1-800-222-1222. This is the sort of thing they do. Lots of reassurance, and occasional active directions when called for."

A huge choice with Trileptal. Need help.? I have been on the anticonvulsant drug Trileptal (oxcabazepine) since I was around 14. It is a tricyclic drug that was prescribed to me for bipolar. Several months ago I went 1 day without it and was in a huge mental block, it was as if I had my personality, coordination, focus, logic, and common sense taken completely away from me. It was a horrible feeling and I regret ever taking this medication. This medication is known to give memory problems, which I have noticed have been increasing to a depressing amount; I am now slowly quitting Trileptal, Ill be from 1200mg/day (2 weeks ago) to the 300mg/day (now, decreased over 2 week period), 2 more weeks unitl I quit completely. Im wanting to know whats going to happen and how I should feel while this is happening, and any advise on how to cope with withdraw. Thank you in advance.

necromancer mortaneus replied: "unless your doctor told you to stop, i would not. change meds or talk to him about other options. here is a site to help you with the much needed infomation, its long but keep reading and then please talk to your doc. "

The safety man replied: "I actually quit taking that a couple years ago. The joy of drugs like that is that usually you are prescribed OTHER drugs to help you cope with them. They are the ones that effect your moods. Not Trileptal. Actually you should not feel too many adverse effects when you taper off of Trileptal. And also, missing your pill for one day should not have caused those effects on your body, because the pill was never made for focus or logic. That would probably be a hypochondriac like situation where you were worried something bad might happen, and so it did. Its a very easy withdrawal to be honest.."

shaneris5 replied: "You would do well to taper off more slowly, otherwise you expose yourself to the risk of withdrawal problems. See the 1st 3 pages of section 2, at ezy build, below, or: DEPRESSION PAGE Z.22 TAPERING OFF DRUGS: DETAILED METHOD. A previous post follows, so you have a choice of plans to deal with ypur bipolar disorder: See bipolar disorder, at ezy build, below, in section 10, and take the quiz, if unsure, and if the results are positive, ensure you get an expert diagnosis from a mental health professional, not doctors, who are much better dealing with physical ailments, and don't diagnose complex disorders like bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and borderline personality disorder often enough to develop any real expertise. Bipolar disorder usually involves major mood swings, which occur without apparent cause, and often over many months, or a matter of years, rather than days, as with most people (unless rapid cycling). I'd take 4 Omega 3 fish oil supplements daily, replacing 2 of them with cod liver oil supplements in the winter months, (or, as probably a better alternative to the 2 cod liver oil supplements: 1 teaspoonful of cod liver oil, with a little butter, to ensure its use; I take mine on sourdough rye bread, or toast, covered with fishpaste, and pepper, to mask the strong taste). Those people who receive adequate exposure to sunlight, daily, won't need the vitamin D from cod liver oil, but many people, particularly those in latitudes far from the equator, find this difficult, to achieve. If you decide to use allopathy, (modern Western medicine) I recommend trying Lithium Carbonate, or Lithium Citrate. (regular tests are necessary, for these) before trying the other mood stabilisers, but if you aren't good at taking medications regularly, drinking adequate water, and keeping up your salt intake, something else, such as Lamictal, or Depakote, may suit you better. Check out "lithium" at, and and always research medications first, (read, and keep the labels/information sheets) so you will be aware of the risks, and on the lookout for side effects. (Personally, if I wasn't bipolar type 1, and didn't experience hallucinations, or serious delusional states, I know I'd first try the orthomolecular, and Omega 3 fish oil supplements, vitamins, minerals; a herbal remedy, and a mostly raw food diet, for several months. Note: St. John's wort, and also antidepressants, may cause mania, or hypomania, in people with bipolar disorder. I'd aso eat in accordance with my "nutritional type". Enter that term in the searchbar at If not considerably improved, after a maximum of 6 months trial period, consult your primary mental health care provider: you may be one of those who need medications to prevent this serious disorder from worsening. If you have bipolar type 1, an antipsychotic medication may also be needed. Everyone should take the Omega 3 supplements, or preferably "krill oil" for its other health benefits: use the searchbar at . Some people refuse medication, using supplements, and a selective, mostly raw food diet (I do not recommended trying this, if bipolar 1, unless you aren't troubled by hallucinations, or delusional states). Maintain the treatments for the depressive phase, in section 2, at: Some topics in section 10 include: treating bipolar disorder with supplements, vitamins, minerals, and herbal remedies (except for St. John's wort, which may cause mania, or hypomania). As with all medications, there are risks, and the possibility of side effects, which is why I inform people of the alternatives, to see if they can cope sufficiently well, without resorting to medications or, at least use less of them. Don't use medications and supplements together, without medical advice, except for Omega 3, which is safe, anytime. It is not unknown for those discontinuing medication, and trying the alternative treatments, (which are not quick to work) to lose their jobs, because of unacceptable behavio(u)r, so I'd start 1 week before vacation, and closely monitor the situation, and use medical advice."

Gefilte Girl replied: "Yes, I take Lamictal (almost same thing) and I'm totally brain dead if I forget my meds and I get a terrible headache too. Why are you quitting it? I would think it's worth it as long as you don't skip pills."

Bipolar, feeling unstable? I have Bipolar type 2. I have been taking Trileptal 300mg a day, as well as Prozac 20mg a day. This is not working out for me, I have been on it for a few months now, and it is just not working (the Trileptal). I called my doctor, and he said to discontinue the Trileptal. I want to get on Lamictal, I have heard it is a good drug, and that it is FDA approved to treat Bipolar, unlike the Trileptal. So, needless to say, he had me stop it today, and I am supposed to see him for evaluation on Wednesday of this week, but I am not sure I can wait until then. My mood swings are coming back, as well as horrible anxiety. I feel unstable, and I am not sure how I am going to feel in like an hour. I looked into being checked in to the psych hospital as a last resort, but what should I do? Should I try to wait it out, and hope my doctor puts me on Lamictal, or check myself into the psych unit and hope they can help me get stable? Advice on this would be helpful, thanks!

phoebe9871 replied: "just stay calm and dont try to stress out. avoid new shows and try to relax until wednesday hope this helps!"

Ellie replied: "just try to do something that relaxes you. if there is anything that relaxes you..."

Dennyyoung replied: "I think that to broaden your options would be to go to the psych all the while waiting to see if you could take the lamictal. That why if you feel fearful of yourself them you would have a big security blanket because you would have basically full round treatment with the psych hospital and also (maybe) taking the lamictal."

Just started new meds, but not sure if they should be mixed? History: Seizure in 2003 - Symptoms right before included dizzy spell with "migraine aura" included followed by the seizure. Put on Trileptal for 5 years. Been off for over a year now. I began getting my dizzy spells along with the "migraine aura" after the birth of my son in March 2009, and usually end up with a headache afterwards every few days. Starting at the end of May I began taking Lexapro which was my only medication at the time. Now the dizzy spells recently began happening every day and the headaches are every few days or last a few days in a row. Saw doctor today and was put back on Trileptal 300MG twice daily along with Verapamil once a day. Question is: Did the Lexapro cause the increase in dizzy spells or could it bring back possibility of a seizure? And, are all these medications safe to mix considering Lexapro is for anxiety, Trileptal is for prevention of seizures, and the Verapamil is for prevention of the headaches/migraines. Not sure if my doctors know if its safe to mix all these...I'm just nervous.

♦hey♦ replied: "you should ask him!!"

americanjumpingbean2013 replied: "I think that your doctors know better than anyone. Everyone has different ways of reacting to medicine combinations. Did you tell the doctors that you take other medicine as well? If so, did they seem concerned about it? Medicines that help generally with the same type of problems, are usual safe to combine, so in your case I think you'd be alright, but because I'm not a doctor, i really think that you should call up the clinic you go to, and ask the doctors. If you're nervous about combining them, than don't until you talk to a doctor. The doctors are there to help you, and are willing to help you with any question that you could possibly have. Good luck and I hope I helped. I hope everything works out!!"
