Sunny replied: "I had to take Flagyl for amoebic dysentery.
Basically it kills all bacteria, good and bad, and it kills amoeba. So that leaves our digestive system with no "Good bacteria" to help us digest food and have regular bowel movements.
I have heard that side effects for Flagyl vary depending on what your health was like before you started the course of treatment and depending upon dosage and length of time you have to take it.
Mine was a horse pill and I had to take it for two weeks. I was really sick before I started the Flagyl, but I got even sicker while I was on it. nausea, vomiting, digestive problems, feeling very light-headed and dizzy. These problems lasted for a couple months after but i am pretty sure some of the symptoms were related to being in a recovery phase after amoebic dysentery.
No-one told me this at the time but I have since learned that there are a few things you can do to ease the symptoms during and after treatment.
Drink lots of water- even "mild" dehydration will make it all worse.
Eat bulky starchy foods while taking the Flagyl will help to reduce gut cramps by keeping your intestines full.
Eat yogurt that contains "live cultures" these are the "good bacteria" that are natural in your gut. Flayl will kill them- you need to replace them.
An anti-nausea med is a very good idea. If the one you are on now isn't working for you ask a dr about alternate choices to treat severe nausea."
Stomach Virus/Infection? Alternative Remedies Please? My sister in law had a stomach issue and was prescribed Flagyl. I have her symptoms now and it's day 4. I can eat, but not really anything that I want. I've been avoiding lots of foods because my stomach feels bloated and it's gurgling all damn day long. Having no money for an expensive prescription, I'm wondering what I can take for some relief already? She was also told to take acidophlous and I started those today. Any advice would help. I'm sick of this.
No runs, just feel stomach discomfort and that gurgling which is driving me up the wall :-(
Retpo: Can I use a little Ginger in my Peppermint tea? Will that combo work?
howardstern*sirius*channel*100 replied: "When you are sufferning gastrointestinal issues remember the BRAT diet. Bananas, rice, applesauce and toast. Keep your food light and your fluids up. Some people get relief from drinking peppermint tea> You can also drink gatorade which will give you some balance of your electrolytes if you have vomiting or diareah. Remember a bacterial infection, like a viral infection will run it's course. Your sister in law was told to take acidophilus because the antibiotic kills all bacteria... both the good and bad. Since you are not on an antibiotic, the acidophilius might upset your stomach more now. Lay off of that and stick to a light diet, and bed rest. When you are better you can introduce acidophilus as a way to keep the beneficial bacterial in your system. More than anything... you need time."
retpo replied: "Ginger is good for stomach upset, overall digestion, and is also anti-bacterial. Our parents used to give us Vernors brand ginger ale as it used to be made with real ginger, but it's only available in some states.
Get some ginger root (very cheap) and grate about a teaspoon into a cup and pour hot water over it, making a tea. Strain it and add honey to taste. Ginger is very strong, so a tsp may be too much. You can also make several cups, cool it and add juice or honey to sweeten it, making it an ice tea. Can add green or other herbal tea to taste."
what is the differance between fish zole and flagyl? Flagyl is the generic name for metronidazole and is prescribed to humans to treat Parasite/bacterial infections of the Vagina, stomach, skin and joints. Fish-zole is metronidazole, an anti-parasite medication used to treat animals(dogs, cats, fish)
CAN FISH ZOLE BE TAKEN BY HUMANS?
robert b replied: "it could but you would have to take a truckload to have the correct amount to treat any infection in humans. it also may be mixed with or have additives not approved for use in humans. just go to a free clinic , get a script, and go to wal mart, its only 4.00$"
Taken pills but now my stomach hurts ?! why and how can i fix it !? Please help , my mom got a endoscopy her result was that she had a bacterial stomach infection . So the doctors gave her antibiotics - Flagyl ,biaxin, and omeprazole and she's raking them but now her stomach hurts , she's bolted, and she can hardly keep any food down , she also keeps tasting the ed's even after like 8 hours . My question is WHY ? and how can she fix it.It's getting so bad that she even came home form work and can hardly sleep. PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!!! .
Katie replied: "antibiotics can be very harsh on the tummy, but it's good she's taking the omeprazole, which will stop her acid production. all she can do right now is drink a lot of water all of the time, and to avoid all caffeine, alcohol, spicy food, citrus, and acidic foods like vinegar. and to continue taking the omeprazole. just make sure she doesn't have any blood in her poop; that would mean she would have to go to the doctor immediately."
My six months old baby poops after every feeding.? She had dairhea a week ago, her first poop before the dairhea started was black, I took her to the pediatrician and she was diagnosed as having a stomach infection. She was given Flagyl and another antibiotic. After a week she is still pooping about 4 times a day, not watery stools, but she goes after every feeding. Should I worry about this.
I have been insulted on Yahoo ask, that I am stupid for asking 2 questions in a day. I would appreciate it if only concerned parents get back to me.
XXRAVENXX replied: "I would call the pediatrician again. That seems a bit much.My son goes 2 times a day at the most. I know not all babies are the same or go the same but I would call and just ask.Better safe than sorry. It does seem like a bit much to me though.Good Luck!Oh and dont listen to people on here, just block them whenever you get a rude comment.Theres lots of them here."
J K replied: "I really don't know if you should be worrying... some friends of mine had started toilet training their 6 month old baby because she pooped after every feeding. They just held her over the potty and she went... went like clockwork... now she doesn't poop in her diaper...... and halfway potty trained already!"
fedupmoma replied: "Every baby is different but I have never heard of any baby pooping after each meal. Take her to a different doctor to have her checked out again. This is a baby you are talking about and can't tell you what might be wrong and only a doctor can do that. You have every right to take her to another doctor and keep taking her to as many doctors as needed because this is not at all normal for a baby to poop after every meal.
Better to be safe then sorry!
Forget about Yahoo, she's not their baby but yours. You're a good parent to keep asking for good advice. My oldest son pooped a lot but not after every meal. Your baby is pooping way to much and maybe she still has s form of the stomach infection and should be looked at again else where.
Take care and best wishes for you and your baby."
concerned parent replied: "I would be worried too... and you are not stupid for asking, it's your child we're talking about. I know that sometimes antibiotics do cause diarhea... because when my son was a newborn, I had to take antibiotics ( I was breastfeeding ) and my son ended up with diarhea, the doctor said it was normal because of the antibiotics... So in your daughters case, yes the antibiotics may be helping her, but one of side effects may very well be diarhea, but atleast you know that will subside after she is thru with the antibiotics, just keep her hydrated... my son's doctor recommended Pedialyte. Hope this helps!"
Dez replied: "I think the best thing to do would be to call your pediatrition and schedule another appointment. It might be nothing to worry about, but you never know. If your baby is pooping after every feeding and that much... the nutrience she needs in her little body might be going through her. Don't give up, and don't ever let your doctor tell you this is normal when you have the motherly instinct that it's not. My son was throwing up and couldnt keep anything down, he was loosing all the nutrience he needed and was hard for him to gain weight. I went to three different doctors and all of them tried to tell me it was normal or its just a faze and stupid stuff like that. Then i finally took him to a specialist and he diagnosed my son and put him on special medicine and now he is doing great and is gaining weight and can hold everything down. He just turn a year old last month"
hal replied: "sorry if your baby poops change its habit this is indicator of something diffrent either infection or diffiernt type of food recheck you peadatrition and also keep her on low suger diet ,no orange,no spices(some cluture give them spices so early)and increase the amount of breast feeding ,can put some limon juce drops in her water and keep in rice based meals ,after all some babaies are used to poops after meals good luck"
moongoddess209 replied: "I would check with your doctor just to be sure but as a mother with a son that has had severe constipation problems from week 2...want to trade problems for a while?!? LOL"
I'm on Flagyl and experiencing cramping- help? I'm taking Flagyl for BV, and the past couple of days I've been experiencing what feels dead on like menstrual cramps, only its not my period, and not about to be my period either. (Sometimes I'll get a pre-period cramp, but my period was about a week ago). I'm worried, because this is recurring BV and my third round of Flagyl, that the BV is getting worse. (Hard to tell because I'm also taking a suppository for a yeast infection). But it says stomach cramping can be a side effect. This isn't a stomach cramp, though.
Is this a normal side effect, or a sign of worsening BV?
And I've already seen my doctor 4 times in the past month and god dammit don't want to go there again before i even finish the latest round of meds.
ssmesq replied: "Try asking your pharmacist. He/she is very knowledgeable about prescriptions and their side effects, readily available at the counter, and free."
danielle:) replied: "talk to your pharmacist...they're a well of information...and they know more about drugs than your dr does.
blessings."
Susan S replied: "Could you please give me a clue what BV is? I am a registered nurse and we use so many initials for everything. Bacterial Vaginitis, I am guessing? Flagyl is an antibiotic and as such destroys the good as well as the bad bacteria in the bowel and elsewhere. To put back some of the normal flora in your bowel and stop the cramping, I recommend eating yogurt with live cultures. And, as always, see your doctor if the situation does not improve. Good luck."
more detail about the bacterial infection? ok I have this odor its especially strong after sex and this white discharge that smells my doctor didnt prescribe me flagyl because we just found out am 4 weeks pregnant so she gave me augmentin to take half a tablet twice daily but it hurt my stomach so i stop on the 4th day i was suppose to take it for 5 days. What medication can I take will this hurt my baby and what medication should my husband take.
Bill M replied: "Ask your doctor."
yeast infection, wrong medication? I wa son amoxila nd flagyl for 1 week due to a stomach bacteria. Now my vagina has been really itchy inside. I have discahrge, it doesnt have a foul smell its just smells different..
I seen my doctor today and he said its a yeast infection cos most ppl get them after heavy antibiotics. He told me to get canestan cream or diflucan.
I went t the chemist ans she asked mys ymptoms. Because mine isnt bad she said the diflucan wud be to strong and just us ethe cream for 6 days inseting it into teh vagina.
Well when i got om tonight i opened the box and relaised she gave me 6 tablet things instead of cream.
There is 1 applicator and 6 tablets, what ami meant to do with this/ Is this tablet gonna fall out? Its called a pessary or something.
It has a paper inside the box explaing but i dont understand it.
I reallyw ana start taking something ocs its irritating but i cantw ork out this tablet??
littlemall4u replied: "eat yogrt and call your doctor back or ask the drug store"
kwflamingo replied: "It's called a suppository, it will stay in, don't worry. For future reference, when you are on antibiotics try to drink cranberry juice as it helps to flush out your system, and eat yogurt, which has live bacteria in it - these help ward off antiobiotic-caused vaginal infections."
Has anyone been treated for Helicobacter Pylori infection.? I was feeling bad the last 8 or 10 week not anything specific just down final I stared to get a pain real low down in my stomach and went to the doctor. Long story short she done some blood test and started me on a treatment for H Pylori infection and it has made me feel like crap im so tired and run down. Has anyone else had treatment and how did it make you feel. The antibiotics I wad prescribed are Flagyl 400mg twice daily KLacid 500 mg or 250 mg twice daily cant remember for 7 days and Losec 250 mg twice daily. Should I go back to the Doc ??
kojy replied: "Hi,
I was treated for this 2 years ago, I had a week worth of antibiotics, I can't remember what they were called but they were same as are given to alcoholics ?!?!? It didn't really affect me cos he also gave me anti-sickness tablets with those and I was also given Omeprazole to take on a long term basis just to combat the sicky feeling
I just can't tell you how great I felt after about 2 weeks - hope you feel better soon!!!"
amrhappy1 replied: "Ive been down the same road as you, with me it was couldn't eat my food properly, had the Helicobactor pylori treatment for seven days, but didn't do much for me, went back to the doctors, he referred me to the hospital, had a camera down my throat, and they discovered i had Barrets disease, i am still under the hospital, and go every 6 to 8 months to have a check with the camera, they say if everything is ok next time i go. they will test me every 12 months, since they diagnosed me properly, i'm doing great, eat and drink what i want, i have to take one Omeprazole (20mg) every day, you don't have to worry, just go back to your doctor and tell him whats happening to you, and if he's any good, he will refer you to the hospital, this barrets disease i mentioned isn't serious, its just that you have slight chance, and i mean slight, of catching stomach cancer, that why they do the camera regular, so don't worry, i'm felling absolutely great, and i'm 65 next week, and feel 45, good luck to you, hope everything turns out as it has for me."
MT K replied: "yes go back,i had the same treatment twice and failed to cure it.H Pylori is a nasty bug which thrives in acid a lot of people have it and some have no problem. However it is known to be a major factor in stomach cancer and lymphoma.I developed Barrett's oesophagus and am now in serious trouble so go back and back and back to the doctors until you feel OK"
snowdrops replied: "hi sorry to hear your not too well at the moment but i promise you that you will feel so much better very soon. I had this about 7 years ago and after all the treatment was finished i ate really well put on a little weight as i was so under weight. I never had any more pain or acid build up. Just let your body rest take it easy and let your body heal. If at any time you feel that you need to see your doctor then do so, even if it is to put your mind at ease."
Why are my cat's eyes dilated and then going back to normal size? A few weeks ago, my cat had either an exacerbation (loose bowels) of her colitis (inflammation of the colon, part of the large intestine) or she had a stomach virus that has worsened the colitis. She was prescribed Flagyl which I believe is an anti-inflammatory as well as an antibiotic (in case she had a bacterial infection as opposed to viral) and while her bowels were bound up a little for a couple days, they would resume to being very loose. Here eyes get real dilated and then sometimes go back to normal size. She had blood work a couple weeks ago which thankfully came back as normal (negative results). We're taking her to a vet that does conventional medicine as well as alternative medicine today but I'm so anxious and worried that I was hoping that someone could shed some light here and offer some input. Thank you so much!
Thank you so much for the responses. Unfortunately the vet believes that she her loose bowels are due to stress from SARDS (sudden acquired retinal degeneration). My cat has an appointment with an Opthalmic vet this weekend. We'll fight for her though ;) Perhaps there are some alternative methods such as herbs to increase quality of life if that is indeed the diagnosis.
Just an update: We went to the opthalmalic vet today and although he confirmed that my cat does have retinal degeneration, he didn't believe that she would lose anymore site unless (heaven forbid) she got cataracts. We're just going to get her checked a couple times a year. The dr also mentioned that cats don't make their own taurine, an essential amino acid and that if it's not in the diet (which she is actually on from the vet, but just fyi) that even though her problem is most likely genetic, the taurine may help if not getting adequate amounts by asking one's vet. And the dr also said that brewer's yeast may help slow down damage (not reverse it though) as it has been shown to help patients (humans) with MS/multiple sclerosis.
newtonman replied: "caz the are dialating to the light or it is baked"
SweetPea replied: "When talking about normal cat behavior, when they are fearful or nervous and defensive, their ears flatten or twitch and their eyes dilate fully to take in as much of their surroundings as possible.
But since your cat is medicated the dilation of the eyes is just a side effect of the medicine. This happens in humans too with certain medicines. Its not anything bad.
But do mention it to your vet."
yodieroth replied: "Cat's eyes are supposed to do that. Since they can see in dimmer light, there eyes are much more sensitive to the lights. Just like our eyes they dilate out in dimmer lights to absorb as much light as possible, in the brighter light they will become the small slits that we are use to with a cat.
Some times when they are sick just as we do there eyes will dilate out more for the fact that just like us there bodys are working a little harder.
So no need to worry at all!!!
When i was younger i would move my table lamp around and watch my cats eyes dilate in and out.
Hope your kitty feels better soon!!"
molly replied: "shes just reacting to the light (:"
turtle replied: "my cat does the same thing...when she is happy or we are petting her...her eyes are big...but you freak her out or try to piss her off her eyes narrow in...very normal...hope your cat is ok..."
kitnsass replied: "You have done the right thing with the vets. The dilation could be because of the retinal degeneration, trying to focus on something, (or the reverse.) You did not mention the situation in which this occurs, but if it occurs without any real change in the ambient light, it is a problem. I think your vets nailed it. Thanks so much for reminding people that cats need taurine! There are still some loved indoor cats blind from the lack of taurine before veterinary science discovered the reason."
