About Side Effects Of Amitriptyline in Answers
Side effects on Amitriptyline? Taking Amitriptyline and I just now noticed this side effect maybe?, on the side of the bottle. It says "You should avoid prolonged or excessive exposure to the direct and/or artificial sunlight when taking this medicine." What exactly does that mean? And why should I avoid sunlight when taking this medicine?

Mimi replied: "check link below."

Kimnkicks mommy replied: "When that is a warning or side effect it means you are at a high risk for burning in the sun in a short ammount of time....Hope this helps :)"

does amitriptyline have side effects in blind people? amitriptyline is used by my mother who is blind and it causes her to see and speak to people who are not there, these imaginary people are usually dressed in gray and dont acknowledge her when she interacts with them, anyone have side effects like this?

luckford2004 replied: "Look it up on the net. There are some really good sites for meds. Better yet, call your doctor"

OG replied: "Im on a rather low dosage and have not had anything like that."

jenny e replied: "Amitriptyline can cause hallucinations, even in low doses. Symptoms of an amitriptyline overdose include seizures, confusion, drowsiness, agitation, hallucinations, and low blood pressure (dizziness, fatigue, fainting). Doses should be reduced if taking cimetidine."

Side effects; amitriptyline? Iv'e only been taking amitriptyline for a week now, however it's making me very tired, groggy, moody, dizzy etc. Im 15 and an insomniac with manic depression (bipolar), and my doc tld me to take 25mg a nite to help me sleep etc. However, iv'e noticed quite a few changes in myself; - im tired constantly, and i fall asleep in class. - During class, if there is noise it makes me 'trip out' and also 'phase out' - i'm finding consentrating much harder than ever before -i keep forgetting things - when i stand up i have to sit back down because i feel dizzy - my appetite has largely increased. plus many other things... Just wondering if anyone knew if these are normal side effects, or if there is something else that may be triggering the symptoms. Also how much is safe to take?...if someone accidently takes more than they are supposed to, how much of amitriptyline would be fatal to a human?? cheers

Abe replied: "What you need is military school, not drugs."

starlet108 replied: "25mg is a fairly low dose - maybe the drug just doesnt suit you. I take 100mg at night for depression and to help me sleep. Sometimes I feel a bit tired in the morning but not trippy or anything. Go back and see your GP.xxx"

Herbert Windt replied: "Elavil has a side effect profile including the ones you described. These effects should wear off within the second or maybe third week of treatment. In the meanwhile, don;t drive. Also, Elavil's o.d. potential is marked. Not saying that taking 50 mgs will kill you, but it is rather easy to o.d. on Elavil."

nicedoc replied: "Yes, you're experiencing common side effects from amitryptiline (sleepiness, increased appetite etc...). You should talk to your doctor about cutting the dose in half to start, then slowly increasing it after your body gets used to it."

Ollie replied: "Hi,please go & tell your doctor about the side affects you are having.Merry Christmas"

Goliath replied: "Go back to your doctor explain your symptoms. He may prescribe another anti depressant. If you are taking more than 25mg let him know this also. Don't play with prescribed medicines."

Grace replied: "Yes these are the side effects of amitriptline. I took these for a few years and they wear off after a couple of weeks."

Richard K replied: "Get off of that poop. It tastes terrible too and gives you a black tongue, abdominal pains, tarry stools and sooner or later you turn into a Zombie. You're better off having a shot of Brandy at bedtime. You're Dr is making commission off of you. Read about the kick backs that the Pharmaceutical companies give out. If people only knew."

cally l replied: "A doctor who persribed this drug to you need looking at. If you want to be zombied forever keep on taking them and you will grow really large, as the meds make your mouth so dry you seem to be forever shoving some thing in it to help the dryness go. It sure would be safer to see a councelor and get to the bottom of what ever is bothering you. Get more fresh air read more stay of the puter for awhile and learn to relax not easy but its achievable. Tell you Doctor No to drugs!!!"

alatoruk replied: "the appitite bit is definately a side effect. it is also used for neuropathic pain in condistions like MS or FMS. My sister ate the entire contents of her pantry in 1 weekend when she was on it for MS. cant help with the others."

sabu j replied: "Amitriptyline is a Tricyclic antidepressant. The dose you were taking 25 mg and it is the desire ddose.Th esymptoms you said are the adverse effects of this drug It includes, fatigue, dizziness, weakness, head ache, confusion and weight gain also would be there. You may find dry mouth , visual disturbances, anxiety, difficulty in voiding etc and may have some cardiac problems too. It is better to take the daily dose at bed time. You should not stop it abruptly. If you find some problems, just consult with your doctor."

Jayaraman replied: "Amitriptyline is in a class of drugs called tricyclic antidepressants. Amitriptyline affects chemicals in the brain that may become unbalanced and cause depression. Amitriptyline is used to relieve symptoms of depression such as feelings of sadness, worthlessness, or guilt; loss of interest in daily activities; changes in appetite; tiredness; sleeping too much; insomnia; and thoughts of death or suicide. Amitriptyline is also sometimes used to treat certain types of pain. Less serious side effects of amitriptyline are - * drowsiness or dizziness; * dry mouth and eyes; * constipation; * mild tremor; * sweating; * mild agitation, weakness, or headache; * ringing in the ears; * nausea; or * loss of weight or appetite. If you experience any of the following serious side effects, stop taking amitriptyline and contact your doctor immediately or seek emergency medical treatment: * an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of the throat; swelling of the lips, face, or tongue; or hives); * seizures; * a fast or irregular heartbeat; * a heart attack; * high blood pressure (blurred vision, headache); * difficulty urinating; or * fever with increased sweating, muscle stiffness, or severe muscle weakness.-"

W W D replied: "Those are normal side-effects but a bit unusual at such a small dose, 150-300 mg being the usual range when treating major depression (not the bipolar kind). The side-effects usually get a lot better after a couple of weeks. In the days before SSRI's, overdoses with tricyclic antidepressants were one of the more difficult OD's to treat."

Side Effects from Amitriptyline Normal? I have chronic pain, and my doc prescribed 10mg of Amitriptyline, starting last night. I took it at 5:30PM, and passed out about 45 minutes later. I woke with my alarm at 5AM, and was very nauseas, and vomited. I felt like my head was in a cloud, and had vertigo like symptoms. I made some tea and ate a biscuit and sat down on the couch, and fell asleep again. i was woken up around 8AM and i then fell asleep again until about 10AM, and woke up with my heart racing. I left a message with the doctors, and sipped about 24 oz of water. I fell back asleep again sometime after that and was woken up again around 12:30 when the phone rang. It was my doc and she told me i didn't have to take the meds if i didn't want to but there would be side effects with this drug. Are these common side effects? will they go away as i "get used" to the drug? I can't work if i can't stay awake, so I'm thinking of abandoning this treatment. Has anyone had similar issues with this drug that can give me advice?

Zakos the greek replied: "I too take this drug and have for 6 years. I was prescribed it for nerve pain. Now I take it to sleep at night. I hate it because it makes my mouth very dry and gives me a funny taste in my mouth. Sounds like your side affects go along with this drug. Give it some time. If you continue to have problems, contact your doctor."

Kathy N replied: "I was on Amytriptyline some time ago for Fibromyalgia and had the sleepiness for several weeks plus other symptoms. I went off this drug. Now, (several years later) I am on Nortriptyline and do not get the sleepiness or the other symptoms. Ask your Doctor."

TweetyBird replied: "Endep, Trytanol, Apo-Amitriptyline (generic name: amitriptyline, note lower case "a") has a number of adverse effects. The common ones are: orthostatic hypotension, tachycardia (abnormally rapid heartbeat) and dry mouth. There are many less common effects, so I'll list only some: Tremor, dizziness, weaknes, hallucinations, blurred vision, nausea, vomiting, urine retention and hyperglycemia. The life threatening effects are: coma, seizures, CVA (stroke), MI (myocardial infraction...heart attack), heart block, numerous blood cell disorders and hypoglycemia. You have described nausea (less common), vomiting (less common), dizziness (less common) and tachycardia (common). The dizziness usually subsides after a few weeks. Don't drive or engage in activities that require alertness or good motor skills in the meantime. Take with food to avoid the nausea and vomiting. Take at bedtime and in the morning be careful of orthostatic hypotension. This is a sudden drop in blood pressure when you sit or stand up. Take it slowly and sit on the edge of the bed until you're sure you're fine. For the tachycardia, perhaps the doctor can lower the dosage a little or prescribe it in divided doses. I hope this helps you."

itty_star replied: "I also was prescribed Amitriptyline for treatment of chronic pain (fibromyalgia). I took the medication for a fairly extended period of time without any serious side effects although I do recall that it affected my speach. I often had periods of mental "fog" and confusion and was tired during the day. I quit taking that particular medication due to side effects that were unpleasant and I just found it to be not worth the discomfort. If you're having side effects to the extent that you mentioned in your question I would seriously stop taking it. It's really not worth that kind of discomfort and mental stress. I am now taking an anti-depressant by the name of Trazodone. I find it very effective in regards to sleep. I was waking up several times through the night and had trouble going to sleep in the first place and this is helping tramendously. I think it's also deminishing the pain level to some degree. Also keep in mind that if your quality and quantity of sleep is deminished that will increase your pain as well. I also purchased magnetic therapy jewellery and that has decreased my pain by probably 15% or so. That might be worth a try as well. Another med you could consider trying is Cyclobenzaprene. It's an anti-inflamatory I believe (not an anti-depressant) and I found that worked pretty well for pain management as well. Just a few options for you to consider or talk to your doc about. Taking Amitriptyline with the side effects your experiencing truly just isn't worth the risk. I hope this helps you. Good luck and God speed."

Amitriptyline Side Effects? On the side of my medicine bottle it says: "You should avoid prolonged or excessive exposure to the direct and/or artificial sunlight when taking this medicine." Is that true for me even though I have very dark skin (I'm African-American). Also is diarrhea another one of the side effects of taking Amitriptyline?

Jason replied: "Most side effects with amitriptyline are minor and require little or no treatment. Among the common side effects are increased sweating, confusion, and dizziness. Also, people who suddenly stop taking amitriptyline may experience withdrawal side effects, which can include nausea, headache, irritability, and sleep problems. Amitriptyline side effects that you should report to your healthcare provider include changes in heart rhythm, seizures, and hallucinations."

Amitriptyline - Side effects etc? I have been worried about a freind lately as she always seems hyperactive. Some times she is really happy and other times really low. Today she told me she was taking amitripyline for depression. What exactly does it do and just what are the side effects??

D A replied: "http://www.rxlist.com/cgi/generic/amitrip_cp.htm"

steven s replied: "to be honest from what you have said she may or may not have bipolar disorder previously called manic depressive, as a friend you should offer your support and encourage her to see a GP , amitrip is used for a lot of things not only depression, what it does is increase the amount of feel good chemicals in your brain, the hyperactive and then really low moods is most definitely not a side effect of amitrip common side effects usually dry mouth is main prob ss"

lorac e replied: "Amitriptyline is an antidepressant drug with a sedative effect. It is useful in the treatment of depression acompanied by anxiety or insomnia. Possible adverse effects include blurred vision, dizziness and drowsiness."

Jules replied: "Hi, this drug is an anti depressant known as a Tricyclic. This link to the Mind website gives some information about this type of medication: I would suggest that a good idea would be to try and encourage your friend to see her Dr if you feel that her behaviour is a cause for concern. You could offer to go with her to offer your support, but don't go into the appointment unless she asks you to. Ask her to write down how she feels and what her worst thoughts and fears are, that way she can hand it over if she feels too anxious to talk about it. These links may also prove useful - Understanding depression: Understanding bipolar disorder: the information is easy to read and understand and should give you some insight into what your friend is suffering from. Hope this helps."

what are the side effects of prescribing amitriptyline HCL? when consuming in a long period....?

I am wondering about Amitriptyline (Elavil) effects / side effects (anti-depressant drug)? I have been on this drug for a little over a month to treat my depression and insomnia (I LOVE that I can actually sleep now, it's great). I started off taking 50 mg every night before bed, and just a few days ago my Dr upped my dosage to 100 mg/night. I was EXTREMELY exhausted and felt high all the time for the first week as I was getting used to the drug, but now I am used to it so I feel pretty much normal now (and not depressed, yay!). I noticed a really weird side effect right off the bat, though. It is really hard for me to urinate now. I actually have to relax completely and concentrate to even be able to pee. It doesn't hurt or anything, it just takes me a really long time to pee. I read on Wikipedia that this drug is also used to treat night bedwetting, so I am wondering if difficulty urinating is one of the regular side effects. Another question is how long is it safe to take this drug? I don't want to go off it in a year or something and then be all depressed again. Thx!

Ryan's mom replied: "Talk to the pharmacist. They can give you a copy of the paperwork that origionally came with your pills."

Rockford replied: "Yes, some people on Elavil have difficultly urinating. You can take this drug longterm. "

peppa anne replied: "Dear Exdumpling*** Normally, your GP will provide you with a prescription for 6 months at first, visit GP, assessment and re-prescribe for a further 6 months. After every 6 months your GP needs to see you, and evaluate. I have been on "Depramil" for 10 months, did not have your side-effects, but (when I first started) I could be shopping and the next minute would have to charge for the loo to relieve my waterfall!! Normally you would know when you needed the loo, so my GP prescribed pills for me to combat the side-effect. My body seems to have come to terms with Depramil and I no longer need the other pills. love peppa-anne ******p.s. is there a reason why you take yours at night???????and not first thing in the morning????????"

spartan77 replied: "I actually took something related to this (Imipramine, another tricyclic antidepressant) for bedwetting when I was a kid. Apparently it has the effect of forcing the smooth muscle in the wall of the bladder to relax, so that the bladder can stretch out more and hold more urine during the night, reducing the chance of bedwetting. However, that same smooth muscle in the wall of the bladder does need to contract when you want to urinate in order to squeeze the urine out. So, yes, it would make sense that you'd have difficulty urinating, because your bladder muscles are essentially being put to sleep by the drug. I don't think there's any long term threat to your health from this, so if the difficulty urinating doesn't bother you too much, you're probably OK. If it does really bother you, maybe you could talk to your doctor about lowering your dosage somewhat (maybe try 75 mg?) so that the effect on your bladder might not be as intense... and just try to find the best balance between keeping your depression under control and also being able to urinate without too much trouble. If that doesn't work, maybe you could just switch to another class of antidepressant; I don't think all of the different classes have the same effect on the bladder as tricylics do. Good luck, I hope you find something that works for you!"

Anyone heard of amitriptyline? It is generic for Elavil. Anyone have any side effects from this drug? I took at bedtime, and 18 hours later, I am extrememly exhausted. Is this normal, being the first dose I have been on? I have no energy at all. I am on thismedicine for chronic sinus problems. Will this side effect go away after a bit?? I would appreciate anyone who has been on this for their input...Thanks!

frank replied: "I took it and slept for days, see if doc can try celexa"

Lisa A replied: "You don't mention the dose, but check with your health care provider and see if it can be lowered. This is normal, if you don't want the dose lowered you could take it earlier in the evening. Don't attempt to cut it in half unless it is scored... has a line down the middle. If there is no line the medication is not evenly distributed through out and is not evenly placed in the pill. Side effects are possible for any medication even Tylenol.. the more you are exposed to a medication the more likely you are to have a side effect. The biggest side effects with generic Elavil are sleepiness, dry mouth, dry eyes, inability to empty bladder ( urinary retention) a person should always use sun screen with this drug. The side effect of sleepiness should resolve in a few weeks, becareful driving and operating heavy equipment"

Vik V replied: "Medicines and their possible side effects can affect individual people in different ways. The following are some of the side effects that are known to be associated with this medicine. Because a side effect is stated here, it does not mean that all people using this medicine will experience that or any side effect. * Dry mouth * Drowsiness * Blurred vision * Constipation * Nausea * Difficulty in passing urine * Drop in blood pressure when going from lying or sitting to sitting or standing, causing dizziness and lightheadedness (postural hypotension) * Sweating * Involuntary muscle movements such as tremors or twitching * Rashes * Confusion or delirium * Headache * Sexual problems * Changes in behaviour * Increased appetite and weight gain * Taste disturbances * Low blood pressure (hypotension) * Disturbances in the normal numbers of blood cells in the blood * Abnormal heart beats * Faster than normal heart beat (tachycardia) * Convulsions (fits)"

What side effects did you experience from Amitriptyline (elavil). (not the listed side effects from pamphlet)? Again, your own side effects (good and bad) -personal experience from it, not the medication's listed ones). Thank you very much. Also, any residual problems from having taking the med?

Rico E Suave replied: "Weight gain, drowsiness, and difficulty in concentrating. I don't know how much it helped my chronic pain as I had been suffering badly and switched meds. Since then I have lost 30 pounds."
