How can I prevent acne while taking prednisone? I am starting an 8 week dosage of prednisone and I want to know how to prevent myself from getting acne while I'm taking that medicine. I know that acne is one of the side effects from that drug. I took it once before and I got a bad case of acne that was really painful. Thanks in advance.

clueloopy_38 replied: "I also suffered from acne while taking prednisone. I am still currently taking prednisone, but my acne has recently cleared up. I'm blemish free & can't figure out what I'm doing differently. An antibiotic like tetracycline would probably help with your acne & does not interact with prednisone. I'd ask your doctor about this before beginning a regimen. Good luck!"

How do you get rid of acne caused by prednisone steriod medication? Its on my shoulders, neck and top of my back.

Steven P replied: "I have been taking Prednisone for about 7 months now, I had a kidney transplant in october of last year, right after I started taking it I got bad acne on my face, back, neck, chest, and shoulders. I use tretinoin cream- .05%, duac topical gel, and clyndamycin phosphate gel- 1%, this has worked, it cleared my face and neck. and my chest, back and shoulders are getting better, the only problem is that the tretinoin cream causes my skin to peel and get a rash, so I don't use it on my face. these all need prescriptions, and I would definitely recommend going to a dermatologist because this is very hard to clear because the prednisone is causing it."

prednisone acne help? i am on prednisone, and i have read that it cause acne does anyone else have this problem? my face just started breaking out, it looks like a rash i wash my face every day an every night but nothing seems to help. wat should i do to help my skin startclearing up

Dana H replied: "Predisone is a mild steroid so it can cause acne, but nothing major and the effect should go away a few days after you stop taking it. Just buy a good face wash. I like Nivea's energizing face scrub."

i have been taking prednisone for poison oak and have started getting pretty bad acne on my back and shoulders? can prednisone give you acne...also my face has started getting more acne too... if it is because of prednisone will it start to go away now that i'm off the medication...

Eric K replied: "Generally when receiving a corticosteroid your body may be immunocompromised. This may allow bacterial infections to grow easier. Chances are this acne is due to a bacterial infection. Ask your doctor and see whether a tetracycline antibiotic is right for you. Chances are this acne will disappear with the tetracycline."

prednisone and acne?!?!? is it safe to use prednisone to temporarily treat acne? im talking about having 30 pills, and using it whenever i flare up/break out... would 30 pills be enough to be harmful? also is prednisone only obtainable by doctor prescription?

Eric replied: "Dont use anything, no creams no pills no nothing. The best way to get clear skin is eat good, drink lots of water and wash your face regulary. If you use anything else it will help during the time bein but if you stop even for 2 or 3 days it will come back 10 times worst."

Tink replied: "Prednisone is a serious - Serious - medication. You dont willy-nilly use it to treat pimples! As such it has serious - Serious - side effects. And Doctors don't prescribe that willy-nilly - so leave it be. You can land yourself in serious health trouble taking it..."

Can prednisone treat acne? my dermatologist gave me a prescription for prednisone to get rid of some of my acne. i take 20 mg for 2 days then 15 mg for 2 days then 10 mg for 2 days then 5 mg for 2 days. he said i should have quite a few of my acne bumps go away. will they stay away or will they come back right after? and that small dosage for such a short period of time wouldnt have any permanent effects on penis or testicle size would it?

does acne go away after your off prednisone? i never had any acne before i went on prednisone..

The prednisone shut down your immune system so bacteria were able to colonize your skin that normally would have been destroyed by the IgA your skin normally secretes. Now, when a sebaceous gland gets plugged, the bacteria colonizes, grows and forms acne. Once you are off the steroid, your natural IgA antibodies will come back. But it may take quite some time before they kill off the bacteria. An oral antibiotic might help."

prednisone and severe terrible acne? i had mono so i was prescribed prednisone for 5 days and my acne has gotten soo severe since then and i use to never get a pimple. i dont know what to do my cleansers dont work and nothing else does and my mom wont take me to the dermatologist. please someone tell me is my skin screwed up now for good from this?

Tracy M replied: "Call the doctor's office that prescribed you the prednisone and tell them that you are having this side effect. There may be something they can do without your having to go in again, since it sounds like it may be a result of the meds. I am so sorry your mom won't take you to the derm, as there are many young people who have acne scars needlessly. What you can do for now, though, is: 1) drink lots of water; it helps your body flush out toxins, and keeps your skin cells hydrated. The more dry your skin is, the more it can clog pores. 2) Take an inventory of what you are eating. Is your diet high in sugar, starchy carbs (rice, pasta, bread, etc.) and fats/oils/butter/dairy? Fried foods are a culprit, too. 3) Check your cleansers: do they have salycilic acid, which helps turnover of dead skin cells, or benzoyl peroxide, which helps kill bacteria and slow oil production? If not, you may want to go to walmart! Neutrogena Oil Free pink grapefruit acne wash is great, and so is clearasil 10% benzoyl peroxide cream. (Warning: any type of peroxide can discolor clothing/sheets, so use white pillowcases if you use it at night, lol) 4) Don't touch your face with your hands (hands have all kinds of bacteria), and wash ALL of your makeup applicators every week to get rid of germs that can spread to your face. Dee D replied: "dont waste any more money on a dermatologist or prescriptions- Ok, here's the answer from someone who suffered from acne for 12 years that tried everything and finally found the cure- Im not sure how old you are but if you're in the 20's or older then I suggest a liver flush- Its takes 24 hrs of ur life, a couple grapefruits, olive oil and epsom salt= less than 7 dollars for everything- pills or topical treatments may work for some people but if its an ongoing problem then tackle the root cause- Liver flush is a simple procedure that literally flushes out deposits of fats, toxins, bacteria and gallstones from the liver. Acne wise liver flush is the most beneficial detox. It is possible to get clear without liver flush but you can expect acne to reappear quickly after eating unhealthy foods. As liver is so critical to the health of the skin it's almost impossible to really break free from adult acne if the liver is not functioning properly."

Prednisone Moon face & Acne, help? I have been on Prednisone for about 6 weeks, I have been diagnosed with Stills disease (very rare arthritic disease). The first 5 weeks I was on 60mg, now I am on 50mg for one week and I am lower 10mg each week until I get down to 20mg and see my Specialist. I have moon face and tons of acne, I am 34 so imagine the horror! I am very confident I will be off of Pred. by the summer or at least down to 10 mg or 5mg, I am doing very well now. Anyone know an estimated time when these nasty side effects will go away? Also any ideas on how to get rid of the acne?

bmac replied: "My niece has A-Plastic Anemia. She had to be on Prednisone for months with her last flare-up. She had the same thing......moon face, acne plus hair growth on her face. It was awful and she's your age and very petite. So she had this huge head on this little body. They slowly decreased the amount and when she got down to 20 mgs., she was almost completely back to normal again. Just hang in there--it will go away."

amicus curiae replied: "hi, the moon face and the shoulder fat will reduce as the prednisolone goes down..ditto the acne. try tea tree oil as a cleanser, actually as a bath soak its fantastic too, if? you can even get in or out of a tub. i was 38 and i was too relieved at being pain free, to care about looks, life was enough! avoid mirrors :-)"

east2west92 replied: "Oh dear...I have been on Prednisone too for my breathing. I devloped a moon face too, but no acne....Prednisone takes forever to get out of your system because it stays in your tissues....my best advice to you is drink water & stay away from greasy foods (bacon, french fries etc) ...if you are hungry (which is one of the side effects) eat carrots-they are sweet & crunchy...wash your face every day with a mild acne soap & use Witch Hazel as an astringent. I also heard that you can use white toothpaste to dry out acne (but use it at night before you go to bed) Preperation H works well for redness, but dont use the toothpaste & Preperation H together.
