Prednisone And Lung Disease Posts in Q&A
My dog could not breathe. Told he had fluid around heart & lung, & minor heart disease. What caused fluid? At the age of 2, Max was diagnosed with hypothyroid (no thyroid hormones in his body). Recently, he developed a bad disc in his back, but was relieved by prednisone and an anti-inflammatory. He was fine, until suddently his trachea collapsed and did not revert to normal. He developed a bad cough, which led to him not being able to breathe. The hospital said he had fluid around the sack of his heart and around his lungs. He also has "minor" heart disease, but does not need medicine for that. The veterinarian said that they feel that Max has an "ill defying type of cancer going on somewhere in his body." The took a fluid sample, but I could not afford $3-5,000 to have him analyzed. Without the sample, how can they tell Max has cancer? And is there any other reason a little dog would develope fluid around his heart and lung?

Chocolate Kisses replied: "Like anybody on this site knows, unless they're a certified vet. Talk to a professional."

smartypants909 replied: "Our cat died of congestive heart disease, thats where they get fluid around the heart and lungs."

AmazonWoman43 replied: "I am so sorry that Max is so ill. At two years old that's just not fair. I am sure that you love him very, very much but sometimes the most loving thing you can do for a dog so ill is to have him put down. Again I am so sorry."

emily replied: "awww im so sorry about poor max =[ i really hope he feels better, i'll keep him in my prayers. my rat had a similar problem, her lungs filled with fluids. i think it's a bodily reaction, almost similar to a build up of scar tissue. im not sure what would cause that type of reaction, but the body would probably be trying to fight something off or repair a malfunction"

Give&Take 2008 replied: "My dog had congestive heart failure, and that builds fluid around the lungs. It means the heart doesnt pump right. They can go without medicine for that until it starts to get worse. They treat it with a diuretic at first- lasix. Maybe his fluid is from the trachea problem. I wonder if the hypthyroid has something to do with it in his case. Does he take anything for that? I know with heart problems, salt is bad. In people, salt has iodine which helps your thyroid, so I'm wondering if he takes something with salt that might aggravate the heart. Is he a purebreed? It sounds very complicated. Heres a link on medicines Maybe you should sue if you paid for him. That's disgraceful that he has so many problems. You might get a lawyer that would to it for free cause he cares about animals too. Best wishes."

does prednisone affect your heart or stomache.? my husband is starting on prednisone and has heart and ulcer problems. he has interstitial lung disease and needs to take this medication. any input will be appreciated.

formerly_bob replied: "Prednisone has no direct effects on the heart, but it can cause problems if a person has endocarditis, or have beneficial effects by reducing inflammation of heart muscles (if it exists), but most of the time there is no effect at all. Its similar for the stomach. Prednisone tends to reduce stomach irritation, and it can also cause the bacteria that cause ulcers to increase, but usually has no effect on the stomach."

robertswife replied: "Is the prescribing Dr. aware of his heart problem? My mother can't go anywhere near that stuff because of her heart and kidneys. I'd double check with pharmacy. "

Ashraf replied: "Prednisone is a corticosteroid. It can cause or worsen peptic ulcer disease. It is not generally known as a cause for cardiac disease but as it can worsen heart condition through its complications (e.g., diabetes mellitus, salt and water retention, causing congestive heart failure in susceptible patients). I hope your husband improves so soon."

Prednisone? my husband has been prescribed prednisone, 30 mg/day for a lung disease. The doctor says he will be on it for about 2 years, with gradually descreasing dosage. He's only been on it for 2 1/2 weeks now, but he's getting acne, shakiness, sore joints/muscles...he's miserable. Are there any ways to help fight the side effects of prednisone? or are there any alternatives out there?

babysasa replied: "below are some of the side affect for prednisone: changes in the shape or location of body fat (especially in your arms, legs, moon face, neck, breasts, and waist). sleep problems (insomnia), mood changes; acne, dry skin, thinning skin, bruising or discoloration; slow wound healing; increased sweating; headache, dizziness, spinning sensation; nausea, stomach pain, bloating my doctor wants me to take 50mg everyday but I requested to take 100mg every other day. This way, can lower the side affects. I have been taken this amount for 7 weeks I am still feeling ok. Some people with this dosage may gain around 10lbs to 15lbs a month. I gain about 2lbs and only thing i don't look as firm. I also tried to control my diet. I took less than 2000mg sodium per day for the days that i don't need to take the pills and take half of the amount of sodium on the day that i need to take the pills. always look at the sodium contents when you shop. get rid of any junk food in your fridge. also store alot of veggies and fruit at home because prednisone makes you hungry. bewared of the sodium percentage on salad dressing. I have read an article today that taken good amount of protassium will help slow down the process of moon face. Banana, Grape, Grape fruit will give you good amount of protassium. During the medication, you will feel dizzy and tired all day long. Don't give your self any excuse. Some easy exercises will help. I hit the gym at lease 3 times weekly and spent 1- 2 hours every time. I walk about 30mins on treadmill for 2.5-3 speed. Some light weight training to tone my mucles. 10- 20 mins basket ball. (I used don't know how to play basket ball). You also have to make sure that your doctor have given you below medicines together with prednisone. - calcium (Long term use of prednisone cause lack of calcium and join pain) - medicine for protecting your stomach. prednisone may cause stomache. - fish oil (i think it's good for preventing diabetic. Long term use of prednisone may cause diabetic. I think fish oil helps me with my moodswing) Tell your husband this is not the end of world. try to think positive. He's not the only one taken this medicine. Since this is the only choice than we have to accept it and try to like it because he's going to be fine again in 2 years right? family support is very important. Don't show him that you are anxious too. Other wise he will be more nervous. Try to keep him busy with something if posible. He will think too much if he has too much free time. Some times our imagination makes us feel the aches and it may not be as bad. 2 years is not a short period of time. I know how he feels.be positive and hope he get well soon. Sorry for my poor grammers and typos.... I hope above can help you. If you have any questions you can email me on."

Hernia sufferers....does this ever happen to you? I have a very large hernia...and every week or every two weeks, I have an episode. It is so painful for about 4 hours,I always throw up, cant bend, and am in severe pain. Then it goes away as fast as it came. The doctor wont do surgery to repair it yet, because I am on high doese of prednisone for a lung disease. She said it would probally happen again, and those on prednisone dont heal well. She said larger hernias are not as serious as small ones. Its an incesional hernia from a c-section. So its about the same size as the c-section scar. Its gross!

is there any cure for lung fibrosis? i am 62 yr old male non smoker, i was diagnosed with lung fibrosis. my dr informed me that there is no cure from this disease and he will prescribe me prednisone to slow progression. i would like to know if there is any known available herbal or traditional treatments for this disease?

mlgable replied: "So far there is no cure and it is terminal. The only thing you can do is try to ease the symptoms. A former co-worker was just diagnosed with this at a young age."

sarah replied: "No, there is not. All you can do is take the regular medication to slow it down. I'm sorry."

Arthritis MAYBE?!? This for you medical people..? Ok, here's thing. For over a year I have been having joint and muscle pain. It started in the chest wall area and has seemed to spread to other areas { hips, shoulders and hands }. I have seen who knows how many doctors and have had many tests. All my labs come back normal and they have ruled out any kind of cancer, lung diseases, and no heart problems. Here's the thing...I've taken alot of different meds that haven't worked but did find one that does...Prednisone!! But the down side is I can't take it for long periods or so says the docs. And when I come off the prednisone and start taking Anti-inflammatory's the pain comes back.. So the million dollar question is..What Muscluar Skeletal disorder ONLY responds to Prednisone?!?!?!??!?!?? And no BS answers please.. My doc has said sometime about fibromyalgia, but I've been online looking for months and the only thing I can find that really describes how I feel is: Ankylosing Spondylitis I'm going to talk to him and get tested to see if I have the gene for this. But if I don't I'm back to square one.

Lee replied: "I had same. Mine was a bacterial infection in my spleen. Please stay off the Prednisone. It will cause you grief down the line."

unschoolymomma replied: "it could be that you have Fibromylagia. I have it and it took many many years for them to diganose me. All my tests would turn out fine, but yet I felt like someone had beaten me with a bat from my head to my toes with inflammation and muscle spasms and achy. They have to do the tender point test. I would find a doctor that deals with Fibro patients and have them test you. I think it may react good to prednisone. What works for one person might not for the next."

PRINTS replied: "It is a little wierd that you are naming not only joints, but your chest. In joints, it could be some sort of inflammation, but in the chest, is it muscular? Vascular? Prednisone can alleviate lots of pains due to its ability to reduce inflammation. A couple of things that can affect joints and joint pains can be: Shark's Cartilage, which can help heal ligament or other damage in a joint (not if you have heart problems - never recommended for people with any heart problems), glucosamine which can do similar things to Shark's Cartilage. You could also look up: Candida and joint problems, or simply Candida Albicans. Food sensitivities can sometimes cause joint issues and can be looked up as: Candida and food sensitivities. Do your doctors have any other ideas?"

Do you think i have sarcoidosis? Here are my symtoms Last year, maybe the fall, started feeling like the left side of my chest had some pressure. Seems as though it kept growing, its like a brick is sitting in my chest. When i breathe, it feels like most of it is from the right side, and the left side only gets about half the air its suppose to get. As a result of this, i went into the hospital in january of this year, because i felt i could not breathe at all really, and started gettings these flutters in my chest i thought i was having a heart attack. Turns out my heart is fine, and the breathing problem was reduced when they gave me a liquid steroid through I.V., while there for 4 days. They put me on prednisone, and after finishing the bottle, that helped but didnt take the problem away. Again , and still to this day 8 months later, when i breathe, feels like most are from the right side, although im used to it and it doesnt bother me, its sstill not right. The cat scan came back that my lungs were clear, even though they said a slide malfunctioned. Few months back, i went to a family doctor, who really didnt do anything. He gave me a steroid inhailer, and that didnt work, then i went to a pulminary disease doctor, who couldnt figure it out, and she gave me more predinose, she suggested i see a rootologist i think it is, and i havent gone yet. Another problem i have been having is that i took something i was allergic to back in march, and i broke out in hives, when the hives went away, and the itching stopped, i developed these dark circle patches on my skin. Today, they are still there, one on my forehead, my ears have dark patches on them, 4 on the back of my neck, one on my back, and about 15 in total on both arms. I have been on a steroid cream for about 2 months but nthing has changed. So since march i have had these circle patches everywhere and nothing has changed. Another problem is now, it has been hard for me to breathe because my esophogus has allot of tissue build up, and the hole where the food goes down is not its normal size, its getting smaller because of whatever. My tongue is very large, and the tip of my tongue sitx on the top inside of my mouth. Is that normal? I dont know if its called the tonsil, but that thing that hangs down in the middle ih teh back is very long, and it sits on my tongue. Seems like im swollen back there, and also i have alot of saliva build up. I am going to an ent monday morning. Also, the left side of my jaw feels back by my ear, where the top and bottom meets, seems to be swollen it doesnt feel normal . Also, before all of this happened, i was having alot of cold sweats. Like daily i would wake up and my pillow is soaked. My vision is pretty ok, its not clear, i can see close, but far things on the tv like the words are hard to see. I have to squinch, but i make it. I had glasses which worked fine but i lost them gotta get more. Other than that, i feel fine, like im neve sick, im never tired, actually seems like this: when i eat mcdonalds, the next day im tired, and i eat out alot, but when i eat good frutis and vegatables, i feel so great the next day i feel like a million bucks, at least outside these other problems. Now, from what i have been reading, the symptons are everything i said. Your jaw hurts, you develop rashes, your chest is short of breathe, and others. Do you think i have sarcoidosis? Oh yea, i also had my wisdom tooth pulled, and 4 root canals over the last 2 months. I have been on prednisone for that also, but im out now. ITs been hard for me to breathe because my saliva seems to keep me choaking at night, and the anxiety from all this drives me crazy. Rodney

ayecheewowow replied: "You definitely have several textbook symptoms. Since sarcoidosis is one of many auto-immune diseases, the prednisone helps, I'm sure. There are many new therapies as well. What you need is a firm diagnosis and proper treatment. This disease can easily be fatal. Berney Mac just died of pneumonia, a complication of the sarcoidosis he suffered from. While no one on YA can say for certain what you have, your symptoms sound serious. You should see a specialist right away before the disease (whatever it is) does any more permanent damage to you. If the doctor can't say what it is, see another one. Rheumatologists are often familiar with auto-immune diseases (if you can't find one who specializes in sarcoidosis). At any rate, you should seek professional medical help immediately. Good luck, hope this helps somewhat..."

Animal specialist or Medical Knowledge urgently needed? PLEASE HELP...URGENT!! Animal specialists and/or medically knowledgeable people needed! I am seeking the help of any health care/medically knowledgeable people for advice. I have a seventeen year old mixed breed cat. She has always been quite healthy. About 3 or 4 years ago, she developed a 'hyper active thyroid.' She has been on Tapazole ever since then, and has responded very well to it. She is currently on a dosage of 5 mg, 1/2 a tablet in the morning, and one whole tablet in the evenings. About two months ago I took her for her regular checkup and my vet heard a "gallop" in her heart. We started her on 2.5 mg of Amlodipine, 1/4 of a tablet every three days. Things seemed to be going well, I brought her in a couple of weeks later, and the vet said her heart sounded great, and to keep the treatment going. Two days later, my cat was having very labored breathing and I brought her into an emergency vet clinic. They told me that her lungs were filled with fluid, and that they had to "tap her chest." They were able to successfully remove the fluid, and I took her the next day to see a heart specialist. They did an echocardiogram on her, and even though her heart seemed to look all right, we started to treat her for heart disease. We took her off the Amlodipine and put her on Lasix (12.5 mg, half a tablet twice a day) AND Enalapril (2.5 mg, half a tablet twice a day). She remained on those medications for a few weeks. Meanwhile, every single Friday she was rechecked, and the fluid was always back. We had to continually remove the fluid (through chest taps). Finally, the cardiologist ran some kind of blood work, to look at where her 'heart values' were at. He said that if it was in fact heart disease, that the numbers would be "through the roof." When we got the results back, all of her heart values were fine. We were both surprised. So, then he said it could possibly be "vasculitis?" Something where the vessels in her body were leaking. So, we put her on Prednisone (5 mg, half a tablet twice a day). She was on that for a couple of weeks...still, every Friday like clockwork, the fluid was back. Always around the same amount...no more, no less. In a last ditch effort, thinking maybe it could be some kind of fungus, we have put her on Doxycycline (liquid form, 100 mg/ml...I give her 0.2 mls twice a day). We also know that it is not cancer, because we've run the fluid (from her lungs) on two separate occasions, to check for cancer. And, it keeps coming back clean. The fluid that they keep removing is perfectly clear...not cloudy or straw-like at all. This is what we know right now: It is not heart disease, leaky vessels, fungus, or cancer. She is currently on a half a tablet of Prednisone (twice a day), 0.2 mls of Doxycycline (twice a day), and Tapazole (half a tablet in the morning, whole tablet at night). Other than the fluid in her lungs, she is PERFECTLY fine. She doesn't show any signs of discomfort or pain at all. She is eating and drinking normally, she is playful and affectionate...you would never even know that there is anything wrong. We have tried EVERYTHING that we can think of. The only option left is surgery, where they will open her chest and dig around inside. I am desperately trying to avoid this at all costs, for it is extremely aggressive, and potentially fatal. I am turning to all of you. I am reaching out to the huddled Internet masses, and begging for you to help me. ANY suggestions, thoughts, opinions, and ideas that you may have are not only welcomed, but completely needed. I pray that if we all put our brains together, that maybe we can save my sweet little Mandrake's life. I am also willing to offer a reward to anyone whose information results in the correct diagnosis. Please help me, she means the world to me

So center you decision around how much the cat will suffer or benefit from the procedure. If the procedure brings the cat discomfort, I would refuse it. Just try to make the cat comfortable for the rest of its life, however long that may be."
