Penicillin And The Flu in Questions
Can someone allergic to penicillin get the flu shot? I am positive I heard some where that if you are allergic to penicillin you can't get the flu shot. Is this correct? Or are you allergic to penicillin and got the flu shot & had no problems with it?

penncomm1 replied: "That will not be a problem. If you are allergic to eggs though don't get it. (They use some egg chemicals to grow the viruses)"

sharon p replied: "I have never heard that before. I am allergic to Penicillin and have had a flu shot the last 6 years. I have had no problems at all."

impurrfect10 replied: "You should be fine...Many people allergic to Penicillin take the flu shot without any adverse effects. be sure to tell the person giving the flu shot about your allergy"

LITTLE BEAR B replied: "absolutely, the flu shot has nothing to do with PCN"

Can penicillin treat swine flu? I was just wondering cause a friend of mine is out of the country (in Bolivia) and there is a lot of the swine flu is going around... but she got sick and they injected her with penicillin and is getting better quickly... so could it have been the swine flu?

Stephen replied: "No is caused by virus and penicillin only acts on bacteria"

Me replied: "Penicillin is an antibiotic so kills bacteria, not viruses, so, no, it wouldn't help with swine flu itself. If she got a secondary bacterial infection because of the swine flu such as pneumonia, which can happen, the penicillin could have helped with that, but would do nothing for the flu virus itself."

Pandora replied: "no penicillin is an antibiotic and swine flu is a virus. Penicillin is useless against any flu."

does penicillin complicate the flu virus? I have been taken penicillin for a tooth infection and wondered why I was getting worse after taking penicillin while I had came down with the flu. Seems the penicillin made my condition worse???

ben h replied: "that strained"

Sparkles replied: "Sure you didn't have an allergic reaction to the penicillin? I got deathly ill after taking penicillin, and the reason was an allergy. Besides, antibiotics do nothing to a virus, and the flu is a virus."

Cocko replied: "Agree with Sparkless"

peach replied: "Most flu's are virus' so penicillin probably wouldn't do much for that.Virus would just run its course.Make sure you aren't having an allergic reaction, but if your symptoms leveled off that probably wasn't it either."

Will Penicillin influence the effectiveness of a flu/gardasil vaccine? I got both shots a day before starting taking Amoxicillin an antibiotic in the family of Penicillin... The reason why i'm asking is because an antibiotic is suppose to kill viruses and such and well vaccines are ''dead'' viruses/diseases

Mr. Tights replied: "Shouldn't"

sweetypie replied: "I doubt it will effect them but if you are on birth control it will make that less effective."

swine flu symptoms and penicillin = irregularity? a couple of months ago i had swine flu symptoms, so i was given antibiotics- penicillin since then my period has been so knocked off early light early heavy fine but heavy then really late heavy can the swine flu symptoms and penicillin really affect me so badly after all this time? thank you :)

♥ replied: "Yes, Penicillin can mess with your period. The last time I took it I was about a week late. But also the last time I took it, I found out through having to be rushed to the er that I am highly allergic to it."

My cat didn't eat I went to vet and she has early symptoms of flu he gave her penicillin will she be alright? Im so worried she wont eat anything and has has had nothing to eat for nearly 3 days is there anything I should do for her? She had a flu jag a few months ago and is well cared for!

dIsTuRbEd replied: "wrap her up and give her paracetemol. Give her a colouring book to give her busy"

x_hey_x replied: "She will be ok, just keep her warm and try and get her to drink lotsif you can the penicillin should clear things up. If your still concerned give your vet a call! Good luck, i hope your cat is ok"

sheila_0123 replied: "She should get better unless she is allergic to the penicillin. It should be brought to the vet's attention that she has no appetite. It is easy for them to become dehydrated. Call them to make an inquiry. Often it helps them to critique their care plans."

angell_1937 replied: "Since she got a penicillin shot from the vet as soon as it starts working she will eat. Keep her warm, lots of hugs from you to reassured her you care. If you have an eye dropper fill it with her water and feed her the water,[ if she is not getting any fluids into herself ] this will keep her from dehydrating... She will not die from lack of food if the medicine does its job."

rotc909 replied: "i would call the vet back and tell him that she still has not ate or drank.you need to get her to eat atleast a can of tunafish .cats get dehydrated easy and it can kill them real fast,,,,3days is too long without anything,i would bring her back to the vet and tell him to help your cat before she gets too weak to be able to eat or drink...please go to the vets asap as time is not on your side,,,,,LOL"

carraigcreative replied: "I'd be curious to know what her early symptoms were. "Cat flu" is sort of a catch-all phrase, and can mean many things. You should be asking your vet why she is having repeat episodes of it. A healthy cat that has been vaccinated, and is kept indoors, should not be able to pick up this kind of illness. Once the medicine kicks in, she will feel better. Meanwhile, you might try some treats, like pureed meat baby food, only the jars that are "pureed beef" etc. and not the ones that are "beef and spaghetti" or other combinations. Cats usually lap that right up."

Chalice replied: "Cat flu cases can take a lot of care. The disease is actually a virus, so can only be treated symptomatically - if she continues not to eat, take her back to the vet, she may need to go on a drip as she will be dehydrated. As a previous poster said, do ask your vet how they normally deal with cat flu cases. I''m surprised your cat has developed this if she was properly vaccinated. Chalice"

gypsy_cat 345 replied: "Three days is kind of pushing it Hon. Cats can't go for more than a few days without eating without potential liver damage. I would return to your vet with kitty and ask that she be hydrated; this often turns them around. The vet will give fluids under her skin. If you absolutely can't get there, try this. You'll need a syringe from the drugstore. Mix canned cat food and water so that it's thin enough to be sucked into the syringe, and squirt it down her throat. But I hope you are able to take her to the vet today; she needs help."

kevina p replied: "Hiya, Just keep her nice and warm, make sure she has plenty fluids, has your vet given you a syringe so you can put water into her mouth? ask him the next time you see your vet if you are concerned about your cat not drinking. My cat Charlie had flu symptoms just before Christmas, i took him to the vet he gave him penicillin and he was fine. He had a runny nose and watering eyes, he had a viral infection that was like flu. Hope your cat is better soon."

Tomas R replied: "Apparently cats are the only animals that would starve to death due to illness. But you have done all you can - took her to the vet who has given her medicine. She will be fine, and soon will start eating again. You may want to mash her food with water for now so it is easier to swallow, and try and give her something she likes. Good luck!"

franja replied: "Try to get some fluids into her. She can go for a while without food - but liquids are very important. Cook yourself the meal she always comes to the table and mews for - and offer it to her... Lightly poach some fish - and offer it to her... Kill the neighbourhood dog and offer his head on a plate... Or just - Give her a warm place to sleep, lots to drink and all the love you always do - and I'm sure she'll be fine in no time."

im reallly ill.ive taken alot of medicines.is it flu and whats penicillin for? i already had 4 doses of beechams yesterday and 1 paracetamol b4 bedtime.i even took a couple of sore throat tablets:lozengers..i havent taken anything today because stil no effective i woke up with white stuff on my tongue.i know disgusting but what is it?.my mouth feels really realy warm.my nose is half blocked.lol my ears and throat hurt.why isnt the medicine working ?ive got an appointment with the doc on friday.i feel weak and tired.cant go to sleep everything hurts .someparts of my body back stomach etc feel cold whereas my legs ,arms and face feel boiling hot.what shall i do?my mouths really dry?i cant eat.oh yeh what shall i drink warm or cold water?

DrTummy replied: "You sound miserable. Sorry. Sounds like the flu! White stuff on your tongue is probably normal. When you don't drink well, the normal bacteria and secretions make your tongue yucky and breath terrible. Tylenol or Motrin are probably the best choices. Drink lots of water, warm or cold. And you should probably see your doc before Friday. If the flu is diagnosed in the first 48 hours, it can be treated with antiviral meds like Tamiflu."

ELK replied: "Penicillin actually kills the bacteria. Your body does a good job of killing bacteria on its own, or letting a virus run its course (if it is a virus), and other meds you might take will relieve the symptoms while your body does its job. If the bacteria is too strong then your doc will prescribe penicillin or another antibiotic to knock out the miroorganizms. You might have the flu or a really bad cold. Drink lots of water, cold or warm. Drink hot tea and soup. Since you can't eat, drink chicken broth to get the nutrients. Does your doc know how awful you're feeling? Maybe your doc can bump up your appointment? I hope you feel better."

shon replied: "ring your gp and get an appointment for today white tonge sounds like thrush but i only thought babies got that i could be wrong but ring your gp and get yourself sorted"

Jenova replied: "we are not doctors. we cannot diagnose your illness. your meds aren't working because you might not need whatever it is you're taking. or it could be because your meds are out of date. penicillin is for infections. talk to your doctor. we can't really help you."

Catwhiskers replied: "sounds like a bad cold or flu. Theres not a lot you can do as there is no cure for cold and flu, it will go away on its own. Medicine can only relieve the symptoms, it will not make them disappear."

fruitcake replied: "oh honey poor you i woke up like this last Monday could not move my head everything hurt even down to the tongue all my symptoms are the same as you, not sure if it was a really bad head cold or the flu but i am voting for the flu, it does not matter if it is a cold or flu antibiotics will not work and this virus, but if you get the sore throat you may be able to get antibiotics to help with that, the best thing i can advise is to rest and sleep and keep drinking lots of fluids. as for eating it will come back, i was taking the beechams cold and fly tablets and these seemed to help better than Lem sips, for the cough i got some medicine called Actifed, it really cleared my nose and helped get a good nights sleep but you can not take any thing else with it except paracetamol, it is just over a week and now i am feeling a lot better but still tired, i know how you feel it is one of the not nice bugs going around Britain at the moment, i hope you feel better soon, keep warm drink loads and try to rest as much as possible and you will feel better in know time."

em replied: "penicillin is an antibiotic that is used to treat bacterial infections. hope you feel better soon."

why do i keep getting tonsillitis after it is treated with penicillin? I've had tonsillitis 3 times in the last 6 weeks. Twice it has been treated with penicillin and it clears quite quickly but it comes back weeks later. I've also had flu twice with it. I'm not run down so not sure why it keeps occuring. Anybody know the answer?

tai_aka_tamariana replied: "It sounds like a resistant form of the bacteria (that's causing your tonsillitis) If you were given penicillin again, tell your doc you need a different antibiotic, cuz it's not working. Worst case scenario is that you might need to get your tonsils removed. Good Luck"

zfzzf replied: "There is only one way to treat tonsillitis and that is to get your tonsil's removed.I took antibiotics for 6 months and then I finally went to a specialists , and he said I have tonsillitis and I got them removed.I had crypts in my tonsil's and white bumps on the roof of my mouth, my tonsils stay big and red for months before I had them removed.Go to a specialist."

Randy Buttledge replied: "You're chronically infected; get 'em yanked, and don't worry about it. Remember your parents? if you are over the age of 15 they probably do not have their tonsils. Hope that this helps you out."

thehereyes replied: "I had the EXACT same problem last year. My tonsils were swelled for a long time and I can remember how annoying it really was. Go back to the doctor and ask him to put you on a strong amoxicillian instead. Also, get at least 10 days worth of amoxicillian pills, drink orange juice, and get rest. Try to stay out of the cold as much as possible."

joulesofaffection replied: "Usually because you aren't completely over it, even if you feel better. I would go get your tonsils out. I am 27 and had my tonsils out last year, and have been feeling alot better!! I went thru ten years of getting tonsilitis 2-3 times a year!! Oh, but if you do get your tonsils out, stay away from people with tonsilitis because you could still get laryngitis."

I have swine flu, but my doctors put me on penicillin? Why? he refused to see me so it was an over the phone appointment no i measured my tempreture it was 39. he said to save the virus spreading if he felt i had all the symptoms then he just diagnosed me over the phone i have every symptom. the high tempreture he told me i had it is it not hard to understand that hes not seeing anyone with swine flu like symptoms to stop infecting other people? my god

Falcon replied: "Pecicillin I believe will make you less infectious."

bee replied: "Perhaps you should find a new doctor.."

TruthSeeker818 replied: "He cant diagnose H1N1 over the phone...chances are you dont have it. The flu is a virus, antibiotics dont work on virus`"

Shelby ♥ replied: "Because penicillin may not help, and many people have an allergic reaction to it."

David replied: "just to stop you bothering him. there is no cure for flu once you have it. you just have to be careful about secondary infections, mostly pneumonia. the common practice since this outbreak started was to stay home, rest, hydrate, and be aware of respiratory distress. you can treat symptoms with otc meds. if you had trouble breathing, the doc would see you. my grand kids had h1n1, and the doc would not see them unless they had breathing issues. they are just fine after two weeks of sickness."

knownout replied: "How can you have over the phone appointments and treatments ? He cannot refuse to see you unless you are demanding immediate attention .. Your doctor will know that penicillin will not be of any use against swine flu. so does not think that is what you have , Why do you think you have it ??"

BroD replied: "Penicillin may be given as a precautionary measure to prevent secondary bacterial infections."

Jdrums09 replied: "It's still the number-1 infection killer..."

laplandfan replied: "Odd that he gave you an antibiotic given the fact that flu is a virus meaning that the antibiotic IS pointless. IF you do have swine flu then he will most likely refuse to see you as you will be infectious so he would not want to spread the virus further. If you are chesty or coughing up phlegm then that could be a reason for putting you on antibiotic."

Rhianna Returns replied: "Probably because he is a crap Doctor who is ignoring current prescribing guidelines. Antibiotics fight bacteria and not viruses. The only time where antibiotics are important during a viral infection is perhaps if you are immunosupressed and are at risk from secondary bacterial infections. I assume this isn't the case? Ask your GP to do a home call and ask to be examined. NO antibiotics should ever be given without an examination first."

sheil replied: "All diagnosis of swine flu is done by telephone because they do not want you going to the surgery to infect others. I am surprised you have been prescribed penicillin as they usually prescribe Tamiflu. Do you have an underlying condition, i.e. weak chest, because he may have prescibed the antibiotic to prevent you getting a secondary infection."
