Pain Medication Ultram in Q&A
Why does Ultram make me rather high? I am sensitive to pain medication, and this stuff lasts forever and ? is great. Why switch though, I like it.

The one and only Jolene replied: "Ok I never heard of Tramadol making you high? Basically, it's tramadol and something else. Usually, people don't have any side effects on this. Maybe that feeling is being caused by something else? I would call your doctor and tell them and maybe they can switch to something else."

Aily S replied: "Tramadol used to make me totally buzzy and spaced all at the same time. In fact, it used to do a lot of things bar kill any pain (lol). Maybe you should speak to your doc, you don't want to get addicted to this kind of stuff..."

squeakyweal replied: "I have heard of this happening, but despite considerable experience with Tramadol myself have never felt anything but a mild tingling, and for a relatively short time at that. I don't find it to be very effective, somewhere between acetaminophen (useless, and toxic) and ibuprophen (useful for certain types of pain). While it does mimic the action of opiates and binds to certain opiate receptors, there's no evidence that it's addictive itself. I guess if people are feeling "high" after taking it, there's some potential for psychological addition."

Is there anything i can do to ease the hysteria and constant panic attacks from weaning off pain medication ? Im weaning myself off of a very weak pain killer Ultram, although they dont consider it a pain killer, it is indeed a narcotic that i have been on for 5 months, i have been weaning myself off for a week of two, but the panic attacks and depression are interfering with my life and work...what can i do?......im only nineteen, and i take care of myself..i cant lose my job.

I LOVE VICODEN replied: "talk to your dr and explain what ur doing and ask for Xanax to help with the panic attacks It will take the edge off"

Does anyone take ULTRAM or the generic TRAMADOL for pain? I have been taking Ultram/Tramadol now for several months and when I stopped taking the medication I have very serious withdrawl symptoms. The doctors say that it isn't a narcotic, but I am beginning to wonder if that's true or not. They say it works on the opioids in the brain just like a narcotic, so I am confused. Is anyone else having a hard time coming off of this pain medication? Or does anyone have more info on it?

Is Ultram the best medication for lower back pain? ? It's not real serious pain, but it mostly hurts when I wake up in the morning.

gracie replied: "It really depends. You need to find out what is causing the pain. If it is arthritis, tylenol might work, if it is muscle pain you might need and NSAID or muscle relaxant. If it is a disc problem you might need physical therapy Ultram is a prescription drug that is similar to opiates like hydrocodone or codeine. Use it only as the doctor tells you and don't take it at times you need to be alert"

michaeljohnkempton replied: "Naproxen is known to help. Ask your doctor about it. Also, try considering sleeping in another position or purchasing an orthopedic pad for your bed. If you have a history of doing exercises such as squats or lifting at your job, knee problems could be a factor in the pain. Make sure you're tackling the right cause first."

ambernericforever replied: "I have alot of back pain. If it is muscular, i use icy hot, or bengay, that stuff is GREAT! if it is bone/joint pain, I use Advil or even Nyquil to help me rest. Try those, and GL!!!!"

DynoDiKk replied: "Ultram is a truly horrible drug in all aspects. you are better off taking real opiates. Type in Ultram sucks on Google and read my friend. and read some of my other answrs, not going through the horrors of this crappy drug again."

Lynn L replied: "It depends, I have a serious back condition, and I have to take muscle relaxers, Ultram, and Percocet. If the pain is really bad, I take Ultram, but if I just cannot take it anymore...like crying really bad pains, that is when I take the Percocet. I would not hurt for you to check with a doctor. Good luck"

What kind of pain medication would be a good step up from Ultram? A little back info: I had a major car accident in 2006, and came out with what I assumed was nothing more than a seat belt shaped bruise. I declined offers to go to the emergency room, as I thought I was fine, but a few days after I found that I was in increasingly bad back pain. By the time I found a doctor and was put through physical therapy, most of the muscles in my cervical and thoratic spine had atrophied to some degree, and this limits my mobility and gives me daily pain. Since 2006 I have been on both Ultram and Flexeril to control pain, but they are both doing a whole lot of nothing. I plan on seeing my doctor today- how should I approach the topic of receiving stronger pain meds without seeming like a junkie? It's not as if I'm asking to be on morphine... I just want to be able to do things my peers are doing. Being 20 and in pain all the time is pretty depressing.

DynoDiKk replied: "You need to be off that Ultram Period! It is a shitty drug! Type in Ultram sucks on Google. Tootsie, no one is calling you a junkie. Hydrocodone would be the next logical choice. And or morphine, believe it or not morphine should be used before the hydro even in a long term situation, and time release morphine. If you can tolerate it! Hydro hits harder. Ultram is the worse drug in the world to be on, read this article I wrote on it. "

justinfranksnj replied: "The next step up could probably be codeine or hydrocodone. Just tell your doctor that lately you've been in a lot more pain and that you have had to severely limit your activities and hobbies because of the pain. Explain how the pain is negatively affecting your daily life and that the Ultram and Flexeril just is not working well in bringing your pain down to a manageable level. It may take some time to figure out which medication and dosage works the best for your specific pain. It took several months, almost a year, for my pain management doctor and myself to come up with a treatment plan that was successful in keeping my pain under control. Be patient, but if your current doctor seems unwilling to prescribe medications that work (many doctors are leery of prescribing stronger opioids, especially to young patients), I would recommend seeking out another doctor. It's not 'doctor shopping' if you switch doctors, that is only a problem if you are seeing multiple doctors at the same time and receiving prescriptions from each of them (and none of them know about the others)."

pain relief medicine ultram? Just started taking this 24 hour pain medication called Ultram. I experienced some side effects that included heart racing, tongue felt swollen, sweating, chills, headache, nausea, anxiety (freaked out pretty bad). I just wanted to know if anyone else has taken this medication and has had the same side effects and if these side effects are common, life threatning, etc. testimonials on this would be great no worries im going to contact my physician as soon as possible. thank you all in advance for your help and support

monstermax1 replied: "Hi, Had the same thing, can't take them. Switched to morphine as codeine tears up the stomach."

deadsqirrl replied: "If your tongue is swelling, I would call that an allergic reaction. Stop taking the medication and call your doctor. I took this medication and did feel kinda like I was on speed or something and my head would feel full of pressure. The pressure in my head and the fact that it did not work too well for my pain made me stop taking it. It sounds to me from your reaction that this med is not an appropriate one for you. There are plenty of alternatives for pain control so I would ask the doctor for something different. In anycase with a swollen tongue you should get medical attention quickly. If the tongue were to swell enough it could block off your airway. It is important to get some medication to ounteract the allergic reaction if the problem is severe enough. If you had an anaphylactic shock reaction it could be life threatening. Your doctor can determine what treatment course of action is needed. Good Luck."

Whats the best long term pain medication for degenerative disk disease? i now take tramodol but i think i take to much. Should i try ultram er so i only take one pill a day?

Superfly replied: "Gee, ask your family doc for this Q. Don't even try to get an answer from forum like this. You see, pain medicine is not just pain medicine. Every drug has potential side effect. AND every drug CERTAINLY has long-term effects. To choose the right pain killer for yourself, your family doc has to consider your medical history and current conditions, along with your family history etc. Drug X may work wonder for your next door neighbor Joe. It may kill you in half a year. Give your doc a call instead of asking this Q here. It is for your own good."

How unsafe is pain medication during pregnancy? My dr. has me on Tramadol aka Ultram. I have only taken them in the second trimester but I'm scared I will see a deformed baby at my ultrasound. A bit paranoid I know. Can anyone help reassure me?

JuStRaCh replied: "if you dr. gave you the meds knowing that you are pregnant than NO worries. i know, i had to take some weird meds my 3rd trimester & even though my dr. kept re-assuring me, i HATED taking them. =D"

lotus_blossom replied: "Check out the website - helped me a lot :)"

Yvette N replied: "If you don't feel comfortable taking it then don't. Web MD is a great trusted website to check out."

music nerd 16 replied: "doctor knows best. a doctor would never give you any medicine that would harm your baby. congrats!"

Jeremy D replied: "well if he KNOWS your pregnant im sure he wouldnt give you medication that will hurt your baby, and go to the medications website and see if it says "do not use if pregnant" cause if it says that THEN you should stop using it and sue your doctor lol"

jerzycharm replied: "don't take anything but Tylenol!!"

Kate A replied: "It depends what medication you take, how far along on your pregnancy you are, and allergies. it pretty much depends on the person you are. ask your doctor first but i think certain kinds of pain medications are ok like tylenol and some others."

Die Sonne replied: "If you really think the baby will be deformed, then it might be best just to "tough out" the pain for the duration of your pregnancy. It won't kill you."

mahler1987 replied: "If your afraid of medications, then deal with the pain, or you could simply call your OB, providing they were prescribed by another Dr. If they were prescribed by your OB, then he feels they are safe for you to take, and your completely obsessing over this."

First time mommy! Due 2.4.09 replied: "As long as your doctor gave them to you (and he knew that you were pregnant), then they will be safe. I took Flexerol and was freaked out because I had gotten it at the ER before I knew that I was pregnant. But it turns out that it was a Class B and those are safe during pregnancy."

Ultram for Abortion Pain? NOTE: I'm not interested in your views or opinions on abortion. I'm having an abortion procedure and I'm allergic to ibuprofin which is the pain medication they want to prescribe me... Will Ultram be safe and efficient to take to control pain during this procedure? Thanks, J Also...I'm having the non-surgical procedure done, so I WILL-NOT be asleep. I need something to be able to handle the pain while I'm awake during this procedure.

cobrazgerl replied: "omg when i had one it hurt so bad thats whats they gave me and i had to go the the er and get percet... omg goodluck and i hope you do well"

The mom replied: "I don't know for certain, but I don't believe the doctor will be comfortable with the idea of prescribing it. You should be having the procedure done with an IV anesthetic, so you won't experience any pain until you wake up. Then the pain is generally from the cramping, which is why the Ibuprofen is the drug of choice. This is a medication choice that is best left up to the doctor to decide. Tramdol- the Ultram, seems a little heavy handed. You shouldn't be looking at that kind of pain afterward. Tramdol is also associated with some psychiatric effects, particularly towards suicide and depression, that might make in not the ideal choice in your case. Best to talk this over with the doctor beforehand."
