Neurontin Mg Resource in Questions
I have been taking a Neurontin 1200 mg tid for nine years. I want to stop this medication? Can I just stop or do I need to taper off. The drug was prescribed for chronic pain, I do not have any history of seizure.

Sabrina H replied: "You need to talk to your doctor about this. I will say, though, not to just stop it abruptly. But, if you feel the chronic pain is something that is less of a problem now, and want off the medicine, talk to your doctor, that is your choice, and he or she will help you do so safely. If they won't, then change doctors. You do have rights as a patient."

TweetyBird replied: "You cannot stop gabapentin abruptly. Speak to your prescriber about the tapering schedule. It should be done gradually over a one week period."

How does Neurontin work on the nerves to stop pain? I have a herniaed disk in my lower spine and was prescriped neurontin 300 mg to take only at night. A friend has neuropathy caused by diabiets and he was prescribed 300 mg neurontin to take 3 times a day. He was told by his care provider that the neurontin burned out the nerve endings to stop the pain. What we really want to know is, How does Neurontin actually work on the nerves? Does it destroy the nerve endings?

Cheppyyyyy replied: "According to my significant other who has Myotonic Dystrophy , it helps his ability to relax the muscles in his hands. But you should be aware of some serious side effects of taking this medication. It has been known to enhance feelings of depression in some patients. Your Doctor can help answer your questions. Also, it is never a bad idea to consult with your pharmacist. Blessed Be."

Lowcarber replied: "Gabapentin (Neurontin) Definition Gabapentin is a prescription drug that was initially approved to help manage epilepsy. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has also approved gabapentin for treatment of the nerve pain that sometimes accompanies herpes infections. Gabapentin is available in the United States under the trade name Neurontin. Purpose Although the FDA has only approved gabapentin for managing epilepsy and treating nerve pain associated with herpes infections, doctors often prescribe the medication for managing other conditions, including tremors associated with multiple sclerosis, nerve pain, bipolar disorder, and migraine prevention. Description As an antiepileptic drug, gabapentin may be used in conjunction with other drugs to prevent partial seizures. Partial seizures are caused by brief abnormal electrical activity in localized areas of the brain. Partial seizures usually do not cause unconsciousness, but may cause rhythmic contractions in one area of the body or abnormal numbness or tingling sensations. Although gabapentin was originally approved by the FDA in 1993, it is still not understood how gabapentin prevents seizures. However, the drug is related to gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA), a neurochemical that possesses inhibitory properties. In brain cells, these inhibitory actions prevent excitatory electrical impulses from spreading to neighboring cells. As a result, gabapentin probably prevents the spread of abnormal excitatory activity in the brain at least in part, by mimicking the actions of GABA. By preventing excitatory communication between cells, gabapentin may also inhibit the electrical impulses involved in pain conduction. This may account for the drug's ability to alleviate pain, especially nerve pain. When gabapentin is used along with other therapies for managing epileptic partial seizures, improvements should be observed within 12 weeks. On the other hand, pain relief may be evident within one week when the drug is used for pain associated with herpes infections. Recommended dosage For adults, the initial dose of gabapentin is 300 mg taken by mouth three times each day. The dosage may be increased if necessary. Dosages as high as 800–1,200 mg three times daily have been well tolerated."

lilwee4 replied: "Neurontin (brand name) is gabapentin. It slows nerve synapses between the nerves. It does not destroy nerve endings. I am on 3600 mg a day now, and the feeling in my feet is close to normal, whereas before they would burn and tingle. It is used as an anti-seizure medication, and people have been on it for years. It is now available generically as gabapentin, and will save you a TON of money if you get the generic medication. Your friends care provider is someone who he should NEVER SEE AGAIN, in my opinion, as that is so unprofessional."

about 3 weeks ago I wnderwent surgery for my back. Since then I have been put on Neurontin 600 mg,? and I have gained 15 pounds. I am not a heavy eater, and have also had trouble with weight gain, but this is crazy. Could it be just all of the fluids, or does Neurontin cause weight gain. This medication really does help me alot, but I just can't understand it....can someone out there help me?

Blah? replied: "One of the side effects of Neurontin (generic name is gabapentin) is somnolence. Have you been feeling 'lazier' or more fatigued than usual? If you do have excess fluids, of course this can be a reason: most of our body weight is actually water. I would think the latter, since I find it hard to believe that just somnolence for 3 weeks can result in that kind of weight gain. Unless you're also on high doses of steroids. Water is heavy. Hope this helps."

Reinhard G replied: "Neurontin can cause swelling. Swelling = water retained in the body, and water = weight. You probably are resting and therefore not burning off any energy, this will also cause weight gain. And of course, you are probably bored, not being able to be active, and maybe eat more because of boredom???"

does 175mg of Zoloft,0.5 alprazolam and neurontin,Ambien 10 mg. cause fatigue and nausea? My doctor says it is o.k. they also prescribed librax before meals but I don't feel any different. My blood tests are o.k. so I really don't know what could be causing it.

Lynda replied: "Actually Neurontin causes Fatigue and Nausea. I cant believe your doctor didnt tell you that. Do research on all your medications."

mjboudx replied: "well.... ambien is used to help you fall asleep, so that could certainly be the cause of fatigue.. fatige us also a side effect of neurontin. and one of the side effects of zoloft is nausea. together they would probably give you fatigue AND nausea, lol. -me"

metallica_rocks0122 replied: "Yeah, sounds like your on a fruit salad of meds I think all of them cause fatigue."

blaze23 replied: "Ambien, neurontin and alprozolam will definitely cause fatigue and neurontin, alprazolam, zoloft will casue nausea."

Gard23 replied: "The zoloft could easily cause both; both the benzo and the 'z'drug (the non-benzo with a benzo effect, Ambien) could cause the fatigue, and interdose withdrawal on the 'z' drug could cause nausea; neurontin induced fatigue/somnolence and nausea are common side effects. Combination effects are another possibility that have the capacity to up the side-effects... Librax contains Librium, a benzo, as well as a second agent to help the gut. A long-term side-effect of SSRI antidepressants can be fatigue/apathy/lethargy. There are various mechanisms by which it may be induced, there's a link below to an old article, but there are others on the general slowing that individuals may experience."

Neurontin - how can I tell if capsules marked APO112 and G5026 are both 100 mg of this medicine? I found both types of capsules in the bottle of pills

cutie999 replied: "check with the pharmacy from which it came."

geniusflightnurse replied: "Call the pharmacy and tell them. Anti seizure medication normally comes with one sort of pill, in one sort of bottle. Dont take them until you clarify this mistake with the pharmacy."

extrasynaptic replied: "Neurontin pills should read "Neurontin" and the dose. You may have received a generic, or a mixture of generics. Bring them to your physician, and ask him or her if it is what was prescribed."

Has anyone had sexual side effects from neurontin? I have been taking neurontin for about two months. My doctors keeps increaseing my dosage. I am at 600 mg 4 times a day. I take it for essential tremors. I have noticed lack of orgasm and wondered if this is what is causing it.

James replied: "I took Neurontin for quite a while, and I definitely noticed sexual side effects. The doctor tried to give me Viagra, but I'm young, so it made no sense. Now I'm off the Neurontin, and it's been a great change -- back to normal."

amyd7795 replied: "I have been having the same problem. I take 1800 mg a day for nerve pain and a couple of months after I started taking it I had trouble. I never had a problem before I started taking it."

Keko replied: "I cant take meds Not knowing what the cause is see if a chiropractor and massage therapist with the principles in the book at the bottom help. Much pain is from muscles below is an example of what may help (based on headaches). Begin with a couple swigs of molasses or a couple of bananas (natural muscle relaxers) daily - magnesium (which regulates many things in the body) and potassium (a needed building block for muscles). Drink at least 1/2 gallons of water per day. Running a body low on water is like running a car low on oil is the analogy the head of neurology at UCDavis told my husband about 10 years ago. Now to the cause - muscles - your back, neck shoulders and head have tender spots. They are knots in the fibers of the muscles called trigger points. It makes the muscles tight which makes them press on nerves and other things causing the pain. The cure - start with a professional massage, (if this does not do it you probably need a chiropractor as well) you will also want to go back over any place you can get to 6-12 times per session up to 6 times per day rubbing (or lightly scratching on your head) every where that is tender until the knots go away. The place where the skull connects to the spine press up under the edge of the skull (to get to those muscles). For more information read The Trigger Point Therapy Workbook by Davies. It teaches what to do and where the pain comes from."

Is Neurontin a dangerous medicine to take? I took Neurontin for 8 years but then I had blurry vision. So i tried other meds but they didnt work. so my doctor put me back on Neurontin just a lower dose (I used to be on 2400mg now I'm on 1200 mg). My dad, who works for Pfizer, isnt happy about this drug.

shelynn102002 replied: "Is it made by a competitor? Pfizer makes drugs. The best thing is to talk to your doctor and ask your dad why he doesn't like it."

copy & paste replied: "NEURONTIN is the brand name of Drug GABAPENTIN- What is gabapentin? Gabapentin affects chemicals and nerves in the body that are involved in the cause of seizures and some types of pain. The exact way that it works is unknown. Gabapentin is used with other drugs in the treatment of some types of seizures and for the management of postherpetic neuralgia (nerve pain caused by the herpes virus or shingles). Gabapentin may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide. What are the possible side effects of gabapentin? If you experience any of the following serious side effects, stop taking gabapentin and seek medical attention or contact your doctor immediately: * an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of the throat; swelling of the lips, tongue, or face; or hives). Other, less serious side effects may be more likely to occur. Continue to take gabapentin and talk to your doctor if you experience * dizziness, poor coordination, or drowsiness; * blurred or double vision; * irregular back-and- forth movements of the eyes; * nausea and vomiting; or * tremor. If children 3 to 12 years of age experience any of the following serious side effects, contact your doctor immediately * emotional lability (anxiety, behavior problems, crying, false sense of well-being, mental depression, reacting too quickly, too emotionally, or overreacting, rapidly changing moods); * hostility (aggressive behavior, suspiciousness, or distrust); * restlessness, hyperactivity or increase in body movements; * amnesia (loss of memory); or * thought disorders (concentration problems and change in school performance). Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially bothersome.-"

Pahd replied: "Hhhmmmm That's kinda strange. Pfizer makes neurontin and also makes one of it's closest competitor, Lyrica. Both are relatively safe to take, but they are designed to affect your nervous system, which always gives the potential for complications. I would tak to your dad about why he is not happy"

kellieanne h replied: "That was the worst drug i ever took.... caused NUMEROUS issues.. the worst one was phycoisis."

pbr p replied: "Neurontin has an infamous past. Your father is unhappy with it for good reason. Neurontin is approved as an anti-seizure medication. Other uses are "off-label". That is, a doctor can prescribe it for other, non-approved uses. Why take a drug that acts on the brain for other "un-approved" uses. You're making yourself a guinea pig. The original makers of Neurontin engaged in highly unethical behavior in promoting the drug. The company was fined millions of dollars and involved in "whistle-blower" lawsuits against them. Among the abuses by the company were encouraging the use of the drug for conditions the company knew it wouldn't help as well as for some conditions that were made worse by Neurontin. When Neurontin was prescribed for conditions it didn't help, people were encouraged to use higher doses. Maybe you Dad knows that Neurontin is worse than we think."

Started new med regime and afraid. During next 3 weeks go off neurontin and take more seroquel.? 900 mg. lithium; 1 mg. klonopin; 125 mcg. levoxyl. Was on 900 mg. neurontin now down to 600 mg. Was on 125 mg. seroquel now up to 150 mg. Would taking away 300 of neurontin cause break-through anxiety even though I added 25 mg. of seroquel? Wound up taking small doses of klonopin at 6:30 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. to help with anxiety. Does anyone know what equivalent doses of neurontin and seroquel are and how to spread these out? It seems the majority of the seroquel is used to help me sleep so 125 mg is now taken at night along with the klonopin although I awoke after 4 hrs. sleep. My doctor seemed to feel that increasing the seroquel and going off the neurontin was the right thing to do because I had swelling in my ankles and was eating more at night. I also have diarrhea most of the time. Help me! I did call my doctor about breakthrough anxiety this morning. No call back. Recently, anxiety 7 to 10 days before period - every 24 days. How do I know if I'm doing the right thing?

Does anyone know if Lyrica is more potent than Neurontin in treating shingles? I've been changed from 300 mg of Neurontin 3 times a day to Lyrica 75 mg. 2 times a day. The opthalmologist had me on the Neurontin, and when I called my primary care doctor telling him the pain was really getting bad, he changed me to Lyrica. He's a 'top doc' in a major health center and an endocrinologist, so I trust him completely. Just wondered if anyone knows the difference in the effect of these two meds personally? I have other questions on the board, regarding my facial shingles and have appreciated all the help from folks. thanks yanksgirl

ckm1956 replied: "Yes & no. You may (or may not) have better relief from Lyrica. It's a newer drug that works well (in most people) for postherpetic neuralgia (translated : pain from shingles). Lyrica seems to work much quicker and with fewer side effects. Having said that, each patient is an individual. What works well for one may not work for another."
