My doctor gave me one cortisone shot in the wrist to test for carpal tunnel, why would he just do one hand? I've had a complicated situation where I have had pain in my hands for 4years. My sleep was very scattered to the point I was waking up after 8hrs of sleep feeling like I had no sleep. My NCV/EMG were negative. I started wearing wrist splits and it made a huge difference. I started taking neurontin and it made a even bigger difference. I've seen a neurologist, sleep doctor, and even when to a pain clinic to help. I got from terrible unfunctioning mornings to splints/neurontin and tolerable days. I finally saw a orthropod about 6wks. He 10-20% of EMG/NCV come up negative and said the next step is to do a cortisone shot to see if there is positive effect. He gave me a shot in one hand, however, since my pain is very under control with the splints/meds it's hard to tell. Any idea why he only did one hand? Anyone have similar symptons? I have an appt. tommorow with him and am trying to think fo good Questions. Thanks all!

meowzie replied: "He may have done one hand because they tend not to do both at the same time. Because you aren't supposed to use it for 24 hours after the shot. I have carpal tunnel syndrome in both wrists and my EMG was negative too. Neurontin didn't work for me. However about once every two years I get both wrists shot with cortisone and don't need to wear the splints except very rarely. He probably wants to see if it helped. If it did, then he may do the other one. Otherwise, you may be sent to hand therapy where they will do ultrasound treatments, get you in an exercise program of stretching, and possibly an electrical anti-inflammatory treatment that pushes the medication directly into the area. Did he have you try not wearing the splint 24 hours after the injection? That is usually how you can tell if it works or not. Ask him why he shot only one wrist, and if you should have not worn the splint 24 hours afterward. Or what other way there is to tell if it helped. Also ask him if he thinks that hand therapy would be helpful. I just finished hand therapy for my tendinitis in my elbow, and in the last year had it for my left thumb tendon and also my other elbow for ulnar nerve entrapment. Good luck! Michelle"

Neurontin help anyone with pinched nerves? My doctor prescribed Elavil for pinched nerve and carpal tunnel pain. but it made extremely drowsy and I was slurring my words. She then changed the prescription to Neurontin for nerve and chronic pain. I was wondering if anyone out there had good results from this drug "Neurontin"??? Pharmacist advised me that I should start feeling much better within a couple days. Anyone out there had this also for prescription for pinched nerve and/or carpal tunnel syndrome?

cvtldy replied: "Yes I have. Its a very good drug, and a very expensive one too. Keep on using it..It takes a while to kick in."

Chas replied: "Yeah I have been taking it for several years for nerve damage due to a spine injury. It's one of the few medications that hasn't changed for me. It help me with pain and minor speech problems some times. I use it as part of a pain management program along with several pain meds and a few others. Here is a link that will give you good info on it. It is an expensive drug but there are several programs that will help you with the cost or provide them for free. Here is the phone number 1-888-4PPA-NOW, 1-888-477-2669 or They will help you/ Good luck"

Golden Boy replied: "i use it for sciatic nerve pain.i think it works well."

Amanda Kirchner replied: "Neurontin (gabapentin) is awesome. I have a disk that's pinching my spinal cord and it helps a lot. It's a double whammy drug for me- it relieves both epilepsy and nerve pain. You'll probably be extremely drowsy at first with this too. You just have to actually stick with it for about a month while you edge up to the dosage you're prescribed. If you can stick with it, it's worth it. If not- your loss."
