Metronidazole Taste Information in Q&A
METALLIC MOUTH!!! How long before the metal taste goes away after taking Metronidazole? It's been a week!? I have had this awful, awful metal taste in my mouth for over a week after taking the prescription drug Metronidazole. It's the worst medication I've ever taken and would never take it again. The worst part is that I've been off of it for over a week and can't get rid of this metal taste in my mouth. Everything tastes terrible, including all of my favorite foods. I'm frickin miserable. Any insight, Please????

tinasphynx replied: "I had for approximately a week and a half after taking metro last year. I couldnt get rid of it entirely either but what I found that helped the best was cinnamon candy - hard cinnamon candy. I dont EVER want to take it again... I wouldnt wish that on my worst enemy."

LX replied: "3 WEEKS TOPS, EAT SOMETHING SWEET, IT HELPS OR PUT VANILLA ESSENCE IN YOUR DRINK IT REALLY TAKES AWAY THE HORRIBLE METAL TASTE."

why do metronidazole tablets taste SO BAD!!!? i dont know how i am going to get through the remaining 20 pills!! im normally fine with tablets but these taste horrendous and the bad taste lingers ofr ages :-(

willow replied: "Ive just been put on these for a tooth infection. I take em whole with lots of water and had not noticed any bad taste"

Storm Chaser UK replied: "I take them with water with fruit cordial in. Get the tablet in your hand, before taking it make sure you have the drink in your other hand, put tablet in your mouth and IMMEDIATELY drink the drink. Works a treat for me."

sammie_7x replied: "i know they taste horrible i felt sick every time i took one when i had to last year."

mr bigs replied: "Yes-I had to take them for a year-very bitter taste.I was glad to get off them."

Is there anything I can do to make my medication taste better? I know wierd question, but please hear me out. I am on an antibiotic, metronidazole, and it tastes horrible. It's in a tablet form. Ever since I'm six months pregnant and since i got pregnant I have not been able to choke any pills down, and this one is the worst so far. I threw it up right after taking it and i was queasy for hours after. Is there anything I can coat this pill with to make the taste not linger on my tongue? I need to take this so I need to come up with something.

nick d replied: "maybe put it in a sandwhich or someone else put it in there for you so you don't know where it is. or this might work i just thought of it if it isn't a capsule you could dip it in chocolate. everybody loves chocolate"

James S replied: "Have you tried eating it with apple sauce, pudding, or ice cream? Unfortunately, some medications smell/taste bad. The best thing I can suggest is to mask it in something that you can tolerate."

Is it normal for my mouth to taste milky after starting this medicine? I just started taking Metronidazole tablets yesterday and this morning my mouth began tasting milky. It's like after you drink warm milk and the taste doesn't leave your mouth. Is this normal?

CrazyTraci replied: "Taste disturbances like the one you describe are common with people taking metronidazole. Some people describe the taste as metallic, but others describe sharp or unpleasant tastes in their mouths. It is perfectly normal and should go away when you finish your course of treatment."

Will anything disguise liquid metronidizale taste for cats? Has anyone had any success with disguising the taste of liquid metronidizale for cats? If so, what did you use? Also, has anyone tried the topical metronidazole gel administered in the ear? Did you have to go to a compounding pharmacy, and was it expensive?

Timothy replied: "I just mixed a little tuna juice with it. and i dont know where to get the gel ask your vet."

J C replied: "Metro is a vile tasting antibiotic. The best bet is to get it compounded into a flavored liquid. While it probably can be compounded into a transdermal cream, the absorption rate varies. It's best reserved for those things that don't require a really precise dosage. It's always more expensive to have things compounded - but that's often also the best way to get foul tasting medication in to a cat."

Metronidazole - avoiding or getting rid of the dreadful aftertaste? They taste absolutely awful. Does anyone have any tips for how best to take them and disguising the taste?

~*eyecandy4 u~* replied: "i have a peice of candy afterward...first i drink juice to wet my mouth then i throw the pill in and drink juice behind it...then i eat some candy....."

FLINT SUMMERS replied: "awwwh u poor thing"

Sheeeeee replied: "the latest drug is ornidizol, less side effects & twice daily."

I had a molar tooth extracted last week. It was infected, and the smell/taste was very overpowering.? I've been on metronidazole, and the infection looks to have cleared up. There is the hole where the tooth was, and it looks pretty clear, but there is still an awful taste if saliva gets into the hole, and then falls back into my mouth. Does that mean there is still an infection? And will the hole totally seal after a while?

kaydid replied: "it well close up maybe you could rise with salt water that might help"

I have been recently waking up a very sweet taste in my mouth ( for the past two days) .? I do brush my teeth before I go to bed all the time. Two days ago I took Metronidazole 2g and since then I have been waking up with this very sweet taste in my mouth. So horrible. Does anyone know why this could be happening. Please help.

Crissie replied: "well if its been happening since youve taken the metronidazole then it could just be an after taste of this, try keeping a glass of water by your bed and have a drink when you wake up. other than that i dont know. if its really bugging you then go see ur gp"

john e replied: "Are you sleeping alone?"

fozzed replied: "Metronidazole tablets should be taken with plenty of water with or after food. The tablets should be swallowed whole and not chewed. You should not drink alcohol while taking this antibiotic, and for at least 48 hours after finishing the course, as this can cause unpleasant symptoms such as hot flushes, abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting, headache and palpitations. This medicine may cause various side effects that could impair your mental or physical ability to safely drive or operate machinary. You should be aware of how you react to this medicine before driving or operating machinary. Unless your doctor tells you otherwise, it is important that you finish the prescribed course of this antibiotic medicine, even if you feel better or it seems the infection has cleared up. Stopping the course early increases the chance that the infection will come back and that the bacteria will grow resistant to the antibiotic. If your treatment course exceeds 10 days it is recommended that you are monitored by your doctor, who may carry out tests to check for side effects and that the medicine is working properly Medicines and their possible side effects can affect individual people in different ways. The following are some of the side effects that are known to be associated with this medicine. Because a side effect is stated here, it does not mean that all people using this medicine will experience that or any side effect. Disturbances of the gut such as diarrhoea, constipation, nausea, vomiting or abdominal pain Unpleasant taste Sensation of a furry tongue Inflamed and sore mouth Loss of appetite Itchy rash (urticaria) Severe swelling of lips, face or tongue (angioedema) Drowsiness Dizziness Headache Shaky movements and unsteady walk (ataxia) Skin rashes Pain in the muscles or joints Darkening of the urine Visual disturbances Confusion Liver disorders Disorder of the peripheral nerves called peripheral neuropathy, that causes weakness and numbness (on prolonged or intensive therapy) Decrease in the number of white blood cells in the blood (leucopenia) Seizures"

C. E replied: "Do you have any risk factors for diabetes present? (obesity, poor glycemic control, elevated levels of insulin etc.) Also, sometimes people with a strep infection often times report a grape like odor, so you might want to get swabbed for that. Our sense of taste and smell are very closely related, so this may not be outside the realm of possibility. I did a quick search of the medication you mentioned taking and didnt come up with any side effects such as taste disturbance listed. I would see an ENT to have things checked out, if things are still not resolved or any new findings, sit down with your health care provider and discuss some other options and treatment strategies. Best or luck!"

Joan F replied: "I know when my husband had scented breath, we found out it was a liver problem. But on the brighter side could just be the tablet."

Can Antibiotics afffect taste and smell? I am currently taking Amoxicillin and Metronidazole for a urinary infection following a short stay in hospital on IV and morphine. Since i've been on the oral antibiotics I seem to have a super sensitive sense of smell! It's as if everything smells twice as strong, and sweet things taset sickly sweet like i've never tasted before. It's as if my sense have been boosted! Strange? Or would it be a side effect of morphine??

probablygraham replied: "Normally you actually lose senses rather than gaining them. I'd ask the doc and/or hospital what could have caused it."

Mr. NotSoSmooth replied: "looks like somebody has a case of the munchies =P"

izzy replied: "Not the morphia in particular, but drugs of any sort can alter our sense of taste, the sickly sweet description is a give away. When we are ill our senses can be affected too. Sounds as if you are getting over something nasty."

Metronidazole: How can I prevent vomitting when I take this for BV? Also how can I get the awful metal taste out of my mouth...I am so not looking forward to the next seven days :(

Reva P replied: "Get back to your doctor and discuss these side effects. There are other meds available."

☼~Ļ○ΰ~♫® replied: "Don't consume alcohol at all. No drinks, no mouthwash. Mixing the two will cause horrible vomiting. And never take it on an empty stomach -- always take it with a meal. This will help with the cramping and nausea and with the nasty aftertaste."
