Metformin Pregnancy Facts in Questions
Metformin & Pregnancy? I have a 17 month old, and got pregnant without medicine. Since having my son, my periods have been very irregular. To help me, my doctor has given me Metformin to regulate my periods. Since taking the pills (1 month now) I have had one period. My questions is this: It is possible to get pregnant just using Metformin? It seems as though everyone else has used Clomid with it to get pregnant.

jrkalberer replied: "I'm pretty sure that Metformin is used to regulate your periods. You would need to do that before you start taking Clomid. Clomid is used to stimulate your follicles so that you produce "better" eggs, sometimes multiple depending on the dosage. There's no point in taking Clomid if you aren't having periods because you aren't ovulating."

lovely replied: "I take 1500mg of metformin for 7 months three months ago my dr decided to add clomid 50mg since I been taking metformin I have been having a cycle was it making me ovulate no. Once I started the clomid I have been ovulating. You might want to talk to your dr but since you been on it for only a month give it enough time to work. When I first started I came on that month and skipped the following month my cycle was like 39 at first then 32 and for the past three months they been 29 days."

Rachel S. replied: "The short answer is yes. You can get pregnant while taking only Metformin. However, you have a higher chance of getting pregnant if you take Clomid in conjunction with Metformin. I have been on Met since February of 08 and while it did regulate my periods, I have not gotten pregnant."

Is it safe to continue Metformin when pregnancy is confirmed? Hi, Doctor suggested me to have Clomid 150 mg +metformin. I have a doubt , if my pregnancy is confirmed is it safe to take metformin. Im having appointment with my doctor coming monday . before that im eager to know about this .Pls anyone guide me.

Lou-Lou replied: "if you have any doubt in your mind then don't take it because if the doctors messed up then that could cost your baby its life"

Carrie F replied: "I think the best thing for your baby is to get off anything that isn't necessary. The doctors will prescribe you things, but you have to realize whatever it is (regardless) has a side effect(s) that could harm your baby!! It's not worth the risk"

southernmans_wife replied: "Yes it safe. It is a category B for pregnancy and that is the safest you're gonna get. I know a lot of pregnant women taking it."

Is it safe to continue taking metformin during pregnancy ? I recently found out im pregnant after mc last dec . . . Im so happy but also scared i was on clomid and metformin and i dunno if i should continue taking my metformin. My doc says i can stop cuz im already preg what do you all think ?

tomberenceinte replied: "My doctor told me I will stay on Metformin through the 14th week of pregnancy, since it has been linked with lower miscarriage rates. Talk to your doc about this - especially since you have had a miscarriage in the past. CONGRATS on getting pregnant and GOOD LUCK!!"

Rocker Wife replied: "I agree with previous poster. Since you already had a miscarriage you should address this with your OBGYN. Some doctors will keep their patients on Metformin for the first trimester, and others don't. Talk to your OBGYN again about your concerns. Good luck."

How do I distinguish between metformin side effects and pregnancy signs? I started taking metformin 500mg 3x a day in the evening three weeks ago. The first couple days I did experience nausea. Then it seemed to be ok but now I am nauseas again, tired all the time, my face feels warm, and really moody. Other than a pregnancy test how do I know if these are signs of pregnancy or just the metformin??

desertrider04 replied: "try taking the metformin after food.....can stop most of the nausea..should work with the next meal....good luck.....either way."

drruth replied: "Why don't you go get a pregnancy test? When I used Metformin (it got me pregnant in a month and a half!) I didn't have any side effects, so I was convinced that it wasn't working. In order to "prove" that it wasn't working to my doctor, I decided to get an at home pregnancy test and take it. Well, when I saw that plus sign on the stick, I about died."

urbabysmama21 replied: "after you are on metformin for about 2 weeks your symptoms go away as long as you take it everyday! if you miss and then start again you will have to go through that all over again!! i have been on metformin for about a year, and i am 18 weeks prego.... it wouldn't hurt to take a test, if you are pregnant you need to talk to a doctor and make sure it is safe to keep taking, i was on 3 a day and when i got prego i was told to take it down to 2 a day..... good luck!"

How long during pregnancy should I continue Metformin with PCOS? I am currently almost 19 weeks pregnant and after my first trimester my doc cut the dose of Metformin to 1 500mg per day (before I was taking 2 per day). She says she wants me to stop after this runs out and she is going to test my Glycose, but I've heard of women that miscarry after stopping Metformin even late during their pregnancy. I know PCOS generally only effects 1st trimester but I seem to think thats wrong. What did you PCOS women do and what was the outcome? If you miscarried, how far along were you? Thanks XoXo

Jessamy R replied: "That's odd. I had PCOS. I was taken off Metformin the moment I thought I was pregnant. They told me as soon as I thought I was pregnant to stop taking it."

My Baby GIrl is Almost here replied: "i took pcos just to get preg and i got preg within one month of takin it and stoped takin it as soon as i found out i was preg then my doct put me on progestron pills till i was 5 months .... now i have been preg 6 times 4 i lost really early 4 to 8 weeks, i had a baby boy at almost 6 months ( but he didnt make it) and right now im preg with a baby girl and im 35 weeks ... they had told me i had PCOS but i only took metformin one time and thats when i got preg with my baby boy. the other times i actually got preg on my own. But i dont think my miscarriages where related to pcos but im not sure. well i wish u the best of luck."

Kelly replied: "I'm currently 5 weeks pregnant and my doctor told me to continue Metformin 500mg once a day at least until 12 weeks to reduce my chances of a miscarriage."

hazel_ride_yamaha replied: "yeah i was taking metformin because my thyroid was throwing off my sugar because i also have hypothyroidism, and as soon as they found out i was pregnant they told me to stop taking the metformin."

Amy the Black replied: "I, too, take metformin for PCOS, so I know what you're going through! Congratulations on your pregnancy. I'm sure it wasn't easy. My first pregnancy, I stopped taking Metformin as soon as I found out I was pregnant. I had no problems and the child was fine. My second pregnancy, I took Metformin the entire pregnancy. That child was fine too. I think you should be okay with the reduced dose, but perhaps you should listen to your doctor. "While safety during pregnancy has not yet been established . . .""

Has anyone used Metformin for pregnancy? My doctor put me on metformin to help with me getting pregnant. I was wondering if anyone has used it for that purpose and what were the outcomes. Any advice or info would be great.

Chow replied: "I was put on Metformin a few year ago, but it was for controlling blood sugar and if I rmember correctly you aren't suppose to get pregnant while taking it and they made me be on the pill for that reason. I lost a bunch a weight from it though."

na nah replied: "I started monday taking Metformin(for my liver and to control my sugar levels) and Clomid(been trying to get pregnant for 4 yrs, 1st time trying fertility med) , and just read that Metformin can help with infertility, I have read and heard its a awesome medicine that helps with PCOS, losing weight, infertility, and can prevent you from getting diabetes. I am taking them both and my dr said it increases your chances by almost 30% with both. I had a cousin who could not get pregnant and she found out she was diabetic and they put her on Metformin and she got pregnant in 3 months!!! If my dr said its good and she even printed me out all kind of papers that support it used as a infertility medicine, I trust her. So I am on the same med as you right now but it might work better if you use it with the clomid, GOD Bless!"

Baby Afinity is here!!! 9/5/08 replied: "hey i have was on metformin two time and with both i got preg within one month of taking them"

Is it safe to go back onto Metformin after taking high dosages of insulin throughout a pregnancy? I was on metformin for my type 2 diabetes and I was struggling with high blood sugars , but my doctor had me taking 850 mg a day of metformin. I was wondering if anyone had this problem but went on a higher dose and was fine?? I've been on insulin through my pregnancy, but I get so sick if I don't eat enough per meal to keep my sugars up.

MamaSmurf replied: "Your doctor will have to wean you off of the insulin if she thinks you can go back to oral meds. Only your doctor can tell you if you can go back on metformin. I DO know that you will have to be weaned off the insulin. Don't do it without a doctor. 850 a day of metformin is not a high dose. A lot of people take 500 mg 2 or 3 times a day. Talk to your doctor, you need your meds adjusted"

sue replied: "Metformin isn't taken with pregnancy as it isn't tested on mothers to be and their babes! So you have been on insulin for a healthy mother and baby. You can probably go back to the metformin now as long as you are not nursing. You may need lower dosage of insulin if you are nursing anyway as you are not preg any more. These things need really closely watched. Depending on my activity level and stress point levels, I need more or less insulin some days than others. Insulin packs on the excess weight if too much is taken!!! And it is nearly impossible to get back off!! Talk to your doc and bring your log book or journal with you so you both can see the results."

Cammie replied: "Talk to your endocrinologist before changing any medication after pregnancy. There are big changes going on in your body.I hate when you have to eat to keep up with the insulin. That should be changed right away. If you are not breast feeding, you and your doctor can talk about going back to oral meds instead of insulin. I believe the amount of insulin taken following delivery is about 1/3 the amount taken during pregnancy.Ask your doctor for the most accurate information."

Does taking Metformin and chlomid for pregnancy really work? and what were some side affects? Hi everyone... I am ttc for 6 months now and my docotr will be putting me on metformin and chlomid this week and I just want to know how successfull the combo is. And what side affects come with it. I am not diagnosed with PCOS and the only symptom I have is being overweight, irregular periods...

wash replied: "I did 4 rounds of Clomid and didn't have any results. Zero side effects though. I took 500 mg of Metformin 3 times a day for 4 months and that alone didn't work for me either. The side effects sucked though. Pretty much constant nausea. Make sure you take Metformin after you've eaten something."

Ginny T replied: "With my first child I took metformin and Clomid and conceived with my third round of clomid, I had no side effects and no issues. with my second pregnancy I used metformin again to regulate my periods and .. I didn't;t realize I had PCOS until after I was pregnant.. but I also was overweight with irregular periods...good luck!"

aunt_f replied: "I hated clomid. I was, quite literally, a bitch on wheels. It also caused me to have cysts each cycle when I didn't have them before. I was also on metformin, and I don't know if it helped or not. I switched to injectables and got preggers the first month! I was diagnosed w/ PCOS, but that was after a round of clomid w/ my regular OB/GYN before going to fertility doc."

mom to an ANGEL replied: "I have taken metformin in the past. The side effects were nasty. You feel sick all the time. I now take clomid and I am on my 3rd round and I have had no luck. The side effects have not been good for me. I have severe headaches on it, I have nausea, hot flashes, mood swings. me and dh have decided that after this round I am not going to take it any longer. I will see if I ovulate next month on my own and then I will go from there. If I don't O on my own then I will ask for femara. Some people have no problems or side effects. Good luck to you and lots of ** baby dust **"

SZO replied: "Metformin is actually a medication given to treat diabetes type 2 and PCOS. It is also given to help regulate hormones in the body, which in effect can help in ovulation. Clomid is a medication that works directly on the hormones to help balance it since it is the imbalance that is causing irregular periods. Taking this together can help a great deal in ovulation and thus conceiving. How successful you can be depends on how your body takes it. However, being overweight does play a role in the prevention of ovulation. Side effects vary, and includes nausea, vomiting, headache, etc. However, you should be fine as soon as your body gets a bit used to it."

PCOS and Metformin pregnancy success stories? I was diagnosed with PCOS in Aug. 2005. My husband and I having many trying to conceive for many years but more consistantly this past year. In Oct. 2005 I had a 9 lb. cyst removed. I was placed on 100mg Clomid and 1500mg. Metformin. Took Clomid Jan-April with no luck. I stopped taking the Metformin in April and just started taking it again in July. What I'm wondering is, has anyone out there taken only Metformin with PCOS and achieved pregnancy? How long did it take to conceive? I am hoping hearing some success stories may give me the inspiration to keep trying. Baby dust to all TTC.

Can the pill Metformin increase pregnancy chances? The doctors put me on this for my poly cystic ovarian syndrome but never told me if it was going to increase my chances of getting pregnant, or it be okay to take while trying to get pregnant??? anyone help??

happyfeetcutie replied: "that is sad dont do crap like that"

Ozzy replied: "No. it is a diabetic drug and also given to people with renal diseases (kidney). It will not speed up your metabolism."

misticbaby21 replied: "i have to take this med for the same reason, and it doesnt change anything w/ pregnancy"

drayno21 replied: "Metformin is given to women with PCOS to help with insulin resistance which can lead to weight loss and menstrual regularity. It can also help lower the androgen levels that cause dark coarse hair, acne, balding, and obesity in women with high levels. Metformin can increase the chance of ovulation by 8-fold and also decrease the chance of miscarriages during pregnancy. Metformin is pregnancy category B, so it is generally safe to take during pregnancy."
