Medication Abilify For Children Posts in Questions
Is my 11 year old grandson safe in taking the medication called Abilify? He has ADHD and his doctor prescribed this medication. However, when I checked this medication out on the net, it says it has never been tried for children under 18. Is it safe and his mg is 5. It has can even cause death, convulsions, etc. Please help before I start this med on Sunday October 8, 2006. Thanks!

REBECCA A replied: "I have very mixed views about this medication. I was on it last year for bi-polar and it made me so ill. I had nausea, vomiting, mouth ulcers, skin rashes, muscular twitching and aching, headaches, blurred vision and palpitations. The Doctors told me the side effects would subside, but they didn't. Eventually I felt so ill and fatigued I took myself off it. Also at the time that it was prescribed it had not been licensed in this country. I don't know whether this is still the case. It is, in my opinion a really powerful drug, and the long term effects of it are still not known. Personally I would air on the side of caution. I know everybody has their own individual reactions to medications but, for an 11 year old I just think it is too young. My body couldn't handle it I am 32. Maybe you could show the Doctor the information that you have found on the net and tell him your concerns. There are certainly lots of other medications out there that do the same thing, with half of the side effects. I think your child has enough to deal with, without feeling unwell on a daily basis. I wish you luck. P.S One thing I will say is don't be too fearful of the list of dangerous side effects as they are really rare, but by law they have to inform the patient."

eedelao replied: "If you feel unsure about him taking a medication that is not usually prescribed for children, I would definately talk to his doctor about it, see if you can get him switched to Ritalin, Strattera, Adderall, Concerta or something like that. There are a lot of meds that are used for ADHD that are safe for use in children."

socratesmanx replied: "DON'T LET HIM TAKE THIS MED!!! I WAS ON IT MYSELF A FEW YEARS AGO, AND I'M 40 NOW!! IT MAKES YOU GAIN ALOT OF WEIGHT FOR ONE THING, IT MAKES YOU VERY OUT OF IT AND TOTALLY DRUGGED UP!!! HE IS WAY TOO YOUNG FOR THIS STUFF, IT IS FOR PARANOID PEOPLE ANYWAY!! IT IS A SEIZURE MED AND WILL CAUSE DEATH!! I'M GLAD YOU ASKED THIS QUESTION, BEFORE STARTING HIM ON IT!! MUCH LUCK AND GOD BLESS!!"

Michael W replied: "I've taken Abilify for over a year and have found no side effects. I feel better about my self, am more outgoing and have energy I didn't have before. I am also taking Lithium and Prozac. I can only speak for myself, I found it to be a good drug with no negative side effects. I think your problem is between you and your doctor. You need to be straight up with him/her and tell them your concerns. Good Luck"

catzrme replied: "I had a lot of wrecks while taking this medication for bipolar. It scares me to hear a child will be taking it. It made me feel "out of body." Any antipsychotic is not good on your system-balance, weight gain, etc. Good luck."

Do you know a child with bipolar who is on medication? would you mind telling me their age and what they are on? I wanted to compare it with my daughter - she is 11 and is on abilify, lamictal, and just started lexapro. Gracie - Could you please give me an example of the symptoms that are similar? I think we have the right diagnosis but i wouldn't mind double checking what you said - it can't hurt.

? replied: "My son was on Risperdol and Lexepro...he is 10. We took him off both though due to extreme weight gain 20 lbs! He is stable now with homeopathic treatments and we are "waiting and seeing" how he will handle school before returning to meds..."

Panda*4Ever replied: "My cousin was hospitalized twice at about that age and I know he was on lexapro for years after that. And lots of therapy. However, six years later. he is doing great and is away at college. A wonderful person with a great personality."

Dawn K replied: "my son is now 17, he started taking meds when he was 15. he is now on triliptal 600mg and zoloft 100mg. and tempazpam for sleeping, he has a hard time shutting off his mind. It has taken years to find the right combo. Good luck it is a long process."

shekilledhim replied: "I'm nineteen, but I'm on the same medications. Work great for me, but she seems a little young to be taking an anti-psychotic. I don't know, guess I don't know so much about it. Hope the medications work for her!"

Graciegirl-Defending the Breed replied: "anti d's shouldn't be given to a child under 18 years old as they can increase suicidal thoughts. PLEASE make sure the doc that prescribed them is reputible. bipolar and add have similar symptoms but totally different treatments. you should research both. I BEG YOU TO MAKE SURE YOU'VE MADE THE RIGHT DECISION!!"

Heaven's Curse replied: "I'm 14, and on Geodon, Zoloft, and Xanax. I used to be on abilify."

Abilify ...anyone have? Has anyone ever had abilify prescribed for a child? I am against medications however my son has very severe psychotic behaviors...He is counseling. Just wondering if this has help anyone he is very aggressive and a lot anxiety, mood swings.. Dr's have ruled adhd as his behavior worsened on the meds... MY SON is 7..yes I know this young

emily c replied: "My Doctor prescribed me abilify and I'm telling you it has helped me a lot, I don't feel like I am on any medication it just helps me feel normal, I have taken all the other meds previous to Abilify and they did not help me like Abilify has. I use to be the worst person you could meet, at least now I'm social and calm."

wordy replied: "I haven't had Abilify prescribed for my child, but I know other people who have, and their opinions of it are generally good. I understand being opposed to meds, especially for so young a child, and that class of drugs is pretty serious. But so are severe psychotic behaviors, as you describe them. They interfere so much with a child's life and development. If counseling and good support in his environment aren't enough to help, biological supports like meds have helped a lot of people. I know what a hard decision it is, though. Best of luck with it."

Question about medication for bipolar child? My Child is 4 years old and has just been diagnosed with bipolar disorder. The psychiatrist gave me three possible medications that can be prescribed to him they are Abilify Depakote and Seraquil (spelling) Does anyone know anything about these medications? I'm trying to figure out which will be the best one to give my child. They all make me kind of nervous. Thanks for your input. I was reading some of the answers. This is the 3 dr to tell me he is bi-polar. I have also done research about the disorder and he is a textbook case. Should I get another opinion. What will these drugs to him why are they so bad?? As far as his behavior goes, I will put it this way. I am his teacher and I watch him all day, He hurts kids for no reason, and just yesterday he punched my assistant in the mouth so hard that she got a fat bloody lip.

Ms Cat replied: "These are all anti psychotics and will help to calm him/her down (relieve the manic symptoms). But Bipolar at 4 years old??? I would get a second opinion. do research on the meds is a great website with a lot of information that is not designed by the drug companies. It's spelled Seroquel. Good Luck"

blaubär replied: "he gave you 3 medications to choose from???? that's the strangest thing i ever heard. he should explain those options to you, explain the possible side effects and advantages and disadvantages and then make a suggestion. if he didn't do that, please don't ask on the internet, but find a different doctor. this is a serious illness and psychotropics are serious drugs which should be taken after careful consideration and consultation. good luck to you and your child"

charlieman214 replied: "I am a 19 year old male. I have been on that same medicinal regimen and it messed me up mentally worse than my bipolar ever did. Do not let anyone talk you into doping up your son. Counseling is the best alternative. Strong medicines like that can cause worse problems than what they are treating. That dr. should lose his licence for even suggesting it!!! Do a little online research into DID and it's causes. I am so pi$$ed to hear this. A 4 year old. WTF!!! Please do not do this. Wait until he is about 12 and try ritalin or adderal if you are intent on getting him on medication and counseling didn't work. Just for the record I am not anti-drug. Quite the opposite actually but this is insane!!!"

Ashley replied: "I would try other treatment before giving a 4 year old those medications. I'm 19 and my psychiatrists doesn't want me anywhere near those medications! EMDR works well with those who have bipolar sometimes. I would seriously think of getting a second opinion to see if there are any lesser rough medications. See if there are supplements/vitamins he could take to help balance his brain out as well. I know vitamin D does wonders for me. Good luck ::EDIT:: After reading what you recently added I would still not suggest putting him on medications yet. Try different types of therapy first. Please do not put your child on those medications. If he's been diagnosed with bipolar by other doctors at least seek out a second opinion of treatment possibilities."

spin4life_livestrong replied: "DO NOT ALLOW THAT CHILD TO TAKE ABILIFY."

laurarara replied: "Four is VERY young to be diagnosed with bipolar disorder - after all, most children of that age have wildly varying moods, it's just a part of childhood. I have taken Abilify and it had very few side effects for me. These are all some serious psychiatric medications, and they're not recommended for use in under 18s. Go to your child's psychiatrist and ask them if they really think it's necessary. If your child gets, for example, psychotic, or suicidal, then I think that the medications are probably a necessity, at least for a little while. But if it's not that urgent, perhaps you could ask for a referral to a counsellor? You could try a few months of counselling, healthy eating and exercise, and THEN if your child's moods are still a worry then you might want to think about medication. I am a firm believer that medication is essential for all severe psychiatric conditions. However, all of these medications have health risks, and I don't think that they should be prescribed to someone as young as 4 unless all other options have been tried. Edit: these drugs have many potential side effects. Look them up on this site: to see details of those side effects. I just don't think it's very wise to force that on to a 4-year-old unless there's no other choice."

Need advice about Abilify.....? My son is 6 and has been on Risperdal for almost a year now, to help with his severe anger outbursts, but he has also gained a large amount of weight. The doctor has now prescribed Abilify to see if that will help prevent more weight gain and still help with the "outbursts". My struggle is with my ex husband. He is totally against using any medications at all and refuses to give our son his medicine when he has visitation with him. He wants to use therapy only. However, we went thru 2 years of different therapies before we opt'd to finally try medicine. I am needing any advice as to if this medicine has either worked or not worked, positives & negatives of it, or any other kind of helpful information that will assure me I am doing what is absolutely best for my child.

Psy.D. replied: "Abilify, by some, is the last line of defense with medications. It is generally useful and used when other meds haven't had the desired effect, or when the side effects are extreme (such as the weight gain you mentioned). Abilify is a safe drug when monitored by a psychiatrist or physician. If you haven't tried cognitive-behavioral therapy for your son, I would try that as soon as possible. It is the most effective form of treatment available, and will very likely demonstrate results in a short amount of time. If you have tried this, then I would say that Ability would be a viable next step. Good luck!"

Kim K replied: "My daughter was on risperdal and she too gained so much weight she went from a size 6x to a 10 within 3 months. She was put on Abilify and didn't work she would still have "rages". She is now on Adderall they tried to change things because the Doctor didn't like how much weight she lost, (over a 1 1/2 yrears she is back to a normal weight)but we came back to the Adderall, it has been working the best. But she has ADHD, Bipolar and OCD. So you just have to work to get their cocktail of meds to work for them."

Hope replied: "It works great for me, no side effects, controls 95% of my symptoms. --- Abilify addresses what none of the other drugs could do for me. Then, again, I am an adult female, with different symptoms. Make sure your Dr. knows that your child will not be getting his medication on the days he's with his dad."

lexi m replied: "I take Abilify at 10 mg. For 6 months it was working well, now I'm having depression come back. I'm an adult female diagnosed with bipolar with psychosis. I don't experience rage (but that wasn't a symptom of my illness). I do not experience weight gain. I liked the med...... but I'm not sure about my current state of mind. Sorry for the mixed news. I personally think it's a good med to try especially for the stable weight. As far as "absolutely best"-- people react differently to the different meds. And going on and off the medication when he is with his father could be very hard on him physically. I would consult with a doctor about that."

pssyct replied: "Don't want to scare you, but Abilify really messed me up. I was completely disoriented, very irritable and totally lost the ability to concentrate on anything or anyone. I promise you that i'm not overexaggerating any of this..it was by far the worst experience i've ever had in my life. With that said, everyone reacts differently, so the best advice I can give is to pay very close attention to the slightest change in behavior..especially "ADD" type symptoms. I hope I didn't freak you out, I just don't want to see it mess anyone else up like it did me. And i'm 34, so i'm thinking it could be even harder for a child to tolerate it. I have a dual diagnosis of bipolar and ADHD, and they switched me to Lithium,Lamictal and Seroquel which have worked perfectly with no side effects whatsoever. Good Luck"

Medication question regarding 7 year old who is hyper/impulsive/mood swings? I have a few questions. If you can answer any of them, please do. My son is 7 and has since the age of 4, been in a lot of treatment has tried several medications. He can't take stimulants, he gets more agitated. He falls somewhere in the Bipolar, ADHD, severe anxiety spectrums. Since he began treatment he has slowly showed improvement, but it's still up and down. Anyways, he is currently only on Abilify and has been on that by itself since August. The Abilify seems to work as well as any other drug/drug combos he's been on. He still has all the symptoms, hyper, impulsive, mood swings no matter what medications he has tried. He sees the doctor on 4/8 and I am thinking about doing one of two things. 1) Taking him off all medications to see if the behavior would get worse or if it would stay the same. Has anyone every had a child that didn't respond to meds and was better off with out? 2)Has anyone had a child like this and found an effective treatment w/meds? He is in therapy. He has been consistently since the age of 4. He currently receives in home therapy 2-4 hours a week. He has seen several pyschiatrists from various organizations.. Behavior modifications work with him, but some if it is so impulsive that therapy and modifications don't help. I am humored by the immaturity. :-)

knittinmama replied: "Sometimes medications by themselves are not sufficient. Perhaps psychiatric therapy of some sort such as behavior modification would be beneficial."

samantha replied: "Well I don't have a child this extreme...but my son was ADD and takes medication for it today. First I would say....is your child off of all food colorings, additives like chemicals, sugar, etc.? If you talk to a alternative doctor they will tell you...or you might find it on the Internet..what to look for...because allergies to any of these can cause a lot of behavior problems. You have to figure out what "triggers" things...and some kids have a lot of them. And know that some behavior is the kid himself...he learns what to use and acts up ....of course that is learned...and is usually only a part of things. I would consult with a doctor that deals with this....and they can test them for what allergies there are. That should at least help. The medication I don't know.....they should be able to help with that too."

r3tfir replied: "Stop drugging him into a zombie, you worthless excuse for a parent! BEAT him, YELL AT him everytime he is disobedient; he'll never learn otherwise."

Existential Blues replied: "You've been drugging your child? You and my parents should meet. Take him off the meds, you horrible parent, before you do any more damage. You are suppose to protect your kid, not ruin his health and life by putting him on drugs some "doctor" gave you for illnesses that have never been proven to even exist. Have you even bothered to research these drugs? The "doctors" don't even know how they work. They suppose there might be a chemical imbalance (never been proven) in the brain, so they give their patients drugs that might help (though they don't know exactly what the drugs DO) with this chemical imbalance that they are not even sure exists. Who was the crazy one again?"

speranzacampbell replied: "My brother didn't respond well to meds of any type. If you take him off, record everything that happens (remember it takes 30 days to clear the system) in detail. Not only what happens, but why, where you were, what the trigger was (if known) what was the last thing eaten/drunk before the action. This is very important. If you can afford it, I'd suggest having a few allergy tests done (the skin, hair, blood & needle) Sounds silly, but there are some foods that counteract the meds. For example a minor shellfish or poultry allergy can cause headaches, and general crabbiness, but both of these substances are used by companies to help bond the meds together. (the capsule, the coloring). The number of people with this allergy is low, but growing, so they still use this. But still what is the point in giving meds to stop behavior, when the pills themselves start some of the behavior? Good luck."

Erika replied: "I don't know which medications he has tried but I would suggest Seroquel if that is an option. Seroquel acts very much like abilify but one of it's side effects is slight drowsiness at lower doses. The sleepiness will go away with higher doses (above 100 - 150 mg). The starting dose is about 25 - 50mg. If he has a problem with the hyperactivity then the drowsiness might be helpful and might actually make him more "normal" than sleepy. I haven't had a child that didn't respond but I know that I my, sometimes didn't respond to certain ones. The best one so far that I have ever tried was Topamax / welbutrin / seroquel combo. Just the Topamax alone would have been a big help though and I could really tell a difference. It is however one of those drugs that has to be given some time before you get to the correct dosage. There might be some problems with it at first such as trouble thinking clearly but all of those go away when the correct dosage is reached. It is hard for me to give any other advice than this because like I said, you didn't mention exacly what he has tried in the past. I don't wish you luck and I hope that you hang in there. I wish that I had parents that would have taken the time to get me some help when I was younger. Just remember that not all kids react the same to medications and what works for one will not always work for another so you just have to keep trying until you get the right one. Good luck with your little man."

FickelFascination replied: "Find the life underneath your life situation; You are not your mind. What you refer to as your "life" should more accurately be called your "life situation." It is psychological time: past and future. Certain things in the past didn't go correctly. You are still resisting what happened in the past, and now you are resisting what Is. Hope is what keeps you going, but hope keeps you focused on the future, and this continued focus perpetuates your denial of the Now and therefore your unhappiness. ... "It is true that your present life situation is the result of things that happened in the past, but it is still my present situation, and being stuck in it is what makes me unhappy," you might say... Forget about your life situation for a while and pay attention to your Life. What is the difference? Your life situation exists in time. Your Life is now. Your life situation is mind-stuff. Your life is real. Find the "narrow gate that leads to life." It is called the Now. Narrow your life down to this moment. Your life situation may be full of problems - most life situations are - but find out if you have any problem at this moment. Not tomorrow or in ten minutes, but now. Do you have a problem now? When you are full of problems, there is no room for anything new to enter, no room for a solution. So whenever you can, make some room, create some space, so that you find the life underneath your life situation. By doing this you begin to leave behind the deadening world of mental abstraction, of time. You begin to get out of the insane mind that is and has been draining you of life energy, just as it is slowly poisoning and destroying the Earth. You are awakening out of the dream of time into the present."

Thanatos replied: "I am going through a similar experience. I cannot remember what I ever read, I cannot remember what I even did yesterday in a chronological order, I cannot even understand the books that I used to (beautifully complex books)I am going to quote a message that I wrote a while ago, just not to rewrite once more. "I lack any type of communication in this state.I had communication with the elderly only. Now with none.I hang again by the interior air.Air.Air.Air.No space for emptiness. I am again hanged by the interior air. Air, air, air. No space even for emptiness. I hear myself breathing. The temperature oscillates like that symphony altered by the inharmonious instruments of my childhood and adolescence. even the cold winter wind could not heal the pox with its vicious pus and red burnt skin of words that... The only thing to do is to try, to be alone and think, think and think, only this way you can ever become yourself again. Because now I know you feel like your whole identity is lost. It is like even the objects that are in reality close to you. You feel this subjective instinct of repulsion or like that object does not belong to yourself - even your body. It is like every emotion you feel in this moment fades away and you try to grab that. And also because there is no identity anymore, you feel like you become that object or that person that is in front of you. You even start to imitate it, not willingly. I wrote this message bluntly, not in a philosophical manner. I did reconstructed myself in a few weeks, however you must want to. Will, desire to become yourself again. edit: I have to write this as well, after I reconstructed myself again, after a few months I got back to where I started - depersonalized - forgot again everything etc etc. Now I am depersonalized. I see myself walk down the street, talk to people, drink, eat etc. Btw, I am also obsessed in this state - but not with food- with horror, mental illness and everything that might harm me. (self-harm at a psychological level). I agree with "Leon". As I wrote, face everything and start thinking straight."

Football Guru replied: "You have to find something to get you going again. I was at a lull in my life and I decided to learn how to play the fiddle. Keep in mind I have never played any kind of music, so this was a heck of a challenge. I have been at it two years now and I am having the time of my life. I feel more alive than ever and I am having fun again."

Leon replied: "I'm going to try and help you, or make you feel a little bit better for a small amount of time im sure. first of all F--k the quacks that tell you, you have all that BS ok PTSD because you were rapped- SO F__king WHAT. do you know 1 out of 3 women get sexually molested in there life time, and 1 of 4 males get sexually molested. so what your dad or uncle F--ked your -ss. i was even molested, another man use to stick his dink in my mouth while i slept. he used to keep the lights off so i couldnt tell who he was. I never let it bother me at all growing up, just figured im sure he felt a lot worse then i did about it. self pitty is not a good road to take in life. kk now get off the medication, and start a good wholesome diet. then start to go for walks in a place that you think is more beautiful then your own self image.(sarcasm) take a look, notice the scenary, smell the air. see depersonalization is a symptom of depression, so either your doctor is idiot or there is a new DSM out. bottom line stop pittying yourself because miss, other people have it so much worse. now i dont know what else is going on, maybe bills or loss of loved one something but start by getting of your -ss and doing something for someone else. start making love to your man, or cooking him dinner, do something really nice for him. nice enough for him to react, and show his appreciation back. it will make him feel good and yourself feel better, just try it and see. anyways i would ramble on and on but i lost track of thought i just got called to the ER for support. take care and remember dont be a loser oh and stop being pittiful."

D replied: "vici, there are a lot of people recovering from pasts like this, and in my opinion, the last place that helps them is a psychiatrists office.... all they do is label, and throw drugs at you... Here is a FREE method where i have personally experienced and read healing stories from people with past lives like this , and they just go there, make a list in a notebook of everything bothering, or not bothering them, the PTDS, depression, all of it, EFT it all, and it is gone... feelings down to normal , from 10 in intensity to zero, in just a few minutes each... Just go there, and do it... you can still see a therpaist, or find one in EFT at the site... it is your choice and up to you... i know you can heal, and get your hormones checked and balanced one day, all that stress causes hormones depression, anxiety, depletion of the adrenals, and there are specialty doctors who can help... and a financial idea... Just get well... psychiatry doesnt know how... but you do... find what works... create your new life... others are doing it...seriously..."

humpty dumpty replied: "I would think that you sound overmedicated. Sometimes when we are ovfermedicated our brains simply stop. All you can do is basic needs. I was on zyprexa for a few years and I knew finally that there was a problem when all I did was sit all day in a chair and watch the second hand of a clock tick. Every minute was endless and empty. I had no thoughts I couldn't follow t.v. and I could no longer read. I mean I could see the words and read them, but I couldn't think enough to connect them to each other. Is ariprozole an antipsychotic? Look up your drugs, you sound overmedicated. Good luck honey."

I went to the doctor and they told me I wasn't ovulating? Is there anything I can do about this? I used to take respirdal and abilify. I took the respirdal or about a year and it caused my period to go away for an entire year. Also the respirdal made me gain weight. Before I had to take the medications I was having regular periods and feeling fine. I would like to have a children when I get married is there anything I can do about this?

V replied: "When you are ready to start trying to conceive, your best bet would be to consult with a reproductive endocrinologist. They deal with infertility issues. You may be given Clomid (or another med of the same sort) to try to help get your body ovulating. I wish you all the best, I really hope that things turn out well for you."
