What are the effects of synthroid (med for Hypothyroidism)? I already know the side effects... I need to know. What happens if I take it and then miss a couple days by accident. I have been feeling light headed today and yesterday. I left my meds at home... and work far from home... So I have missed 2 days so far... Am I ok? I am dizzy and light headed without it... Is that usual?

dcrc93 replied: "you need to take the meds and see if it gets better"

DNA replied: "No big deal if you miss a day or two. All that will happen is some of your symptoms like fatigue may show up. Just start back on your normal schedule asap. one of two days isn't going to make much of a difference as the T4 has a culmative effect. The dizziness is probably the symptom you have when you have missed a dose. With most its fatigue, but for you it could be the dizziness."

Anybody taking Synthroid have side effects occasionally like tremors and sweating? I have noticed it listed as a possible side effect and I was wondering if anyone else takes Synthroid and has this happen. Occasionally, my hands shake. I get hot flashes about once a week, brought on easily when I am busy at work. I take 88 mcg a day for simple hypothyroidism. I am a nurse and I watch my TSH closely. I am within range and well controlled. I just wanted to get an idea of how many real patients experience this also.

DNA replied: "Sounds like you are on too high a dosage. Basically you want to shoot for a morning TSH of around 1.0 on Synthroid. The only thing I can think of is time of testing. TSH is highest while we sleep, so you always want to test first thing in the morning. Your symptoms could be perimenopausal if you are close to your 40's. Get a free t4 and free t3 the next time you test. These show the actual amounts of these hormones available for the body to use. The free t4 and free t3 are much better tests than the TSH. The TSH is the standard test, probably because it is much cheaper."

Lisa A replied: "It sounds like you are overdosing. Get new blood tests, and base you new dosage on the new tests. The tests you need are free T3 and free T4. You need to stop relying on TSH. It is an indirect, second hand way to GUESS at what your thyroid hormone (T3 and T4) levels are. TSH isn't a thyroid hormone, and it doesn't cause or control your symptoms."

What's YOUR opinion of Synthroid, for Hypothyroidism? My doctor diagnosed me with Hypothyroidism and prescribed Synthroid but...I HATE DRUGS and their side effects!! Synthroid's website says that you CANNOT ever get off of it or it can cause infertility, problems during pregnancy and heart disease...anyone know of anything NATURAL/HERBAL I can take instead??

Violet Pearl replied: "I took it for 3 months and had a horrible reaction, went to the ER and it took months to recover from it. I stopped taking it. So now I made big changes in my diet, exercise and used all-natural progesterone. My symptoms totally reversed. I'm no doctor and I don't know what your blood tests revealed, so I'm only telling you my own experience. Read "Alternative treatment for hypothyroidism"\ and Specific methods of alternative medicine"

roby replied: "thanks for letting me know of all the side effects ive been using it since last october and so far I feel no different then before they say it takes time how long is the question..... Diet, exercise, seem to help from what ive heard."

Symptom side effects of taking diet pill with synthroid? I have just increased my dosage of thyroxine to.175mgs. I have hypothyroidism. And I was also taking exterem metabo life diet pills. I then start to notice that under my eye on top of the cheek area was really puffy. It flucates. It does not respond to cold packs .I was wondering if the diet pills in conjunction with synthroid might be the reason for the swelling. Or am I just getting old and need a face lift? I just turned 38. If it's do to age can someone suggest something natural to get rid of the puffiness and swelling? Something non-evasive.

iluvtorofl replied: "It is the fat pad under your eyes. They show more with aging. Welcome to the 40ish mark."

DNA replied: "I don't believe its connected to the diet pills, but you really shouldn't be using diet pills with thyroid meds. Getting your morning TSH around 1.0 on T4 will help you much more than any diet pill can."

Hypothyroidism + Synthroid? A year or two ago I was diagnosed with Hypothyroidism, and was put on Levothyroxine (Synthroid). I'm sixteen, now. Since then, I began to develop a lot of different side effects, I suppose, but never did anything about them. To list a few: severe confusion, severe memory loss, severe symptoms of hypoglycemia, fatigue, muscle cramps, cold intolerance, irritability... the main three that are just too annoying to live with are the first three. My doctor has told me that the symptoms of hypoglycemia are unrelated, as well as everything else more or less. I feel t-e-r-r-i-b-l-e. Could it be the medication? Could these be symptoms of intolerance to the drug? Can Synthroid cause side affects such as these? What do I do?

Dolleyes replied: "I take the same medicine and don't have any of those problems"

Jenny S replied: "I've been on synthroid for 15 years and have symptoms like that when my dose isn't high enough."

side effects of Synthroid and Thyroxine??!!? I have hypothyroidism, and just 2wks ago I got put on the generic of Synthroid..Levothyroxine. now i seem to feel worse than b/f i started the meds. My glands in my neck are swollen and sore, I have bad joint pain all the time, and Im soo tired, and i am itchy. Anyone know anything about this???!!! I dont know where to go from here. someone mentioned a possibility of iodine deficiency? Please answer only if you KNOW! thanks!

Derek R replied: "I'm just a medical student, but those symptoms don't sound like the side effects you would expect from levothyroxine (fever, anxiety, sweating, insomnia, high blood pressure, etc.)... Feeling tired could mean you actually aren't getting enough of the hormone. Iodine deficiency is rare in developed countries, but possible, and it would explain the "swollen glands"--or they could just be lymph nodes from an infection (maybe the flu?) which can make you tired and achey... A doctor could feel your glands and tell if they were your lymph nodes (probably from an infection) or your thyroid gland (the process called goiter, which can be caused by iodine deficiency), and a doctor could also tell you definitively whether or not these symptoms could be from your drugs. If he or she were worried about the drug, he could check your blood levels and get your dose right. As for the itchiness, that could be lots of stuff (certain infections, allergies, irritation, etc.), and, again, a doctor could look at it and could help you figure out the reason for it. I wish I knew more, and the advice is boring, but it's true--see your doctor!"

DNA replied: "Joint pains and fatigue are symptoms of the hypothyroidism itself. It's quite possible that you will do better on Synthroid. Each of is are different. When you find a thyroid med that works, stick with it. Another thing about the symptoms, if you still have these symptoms on Synthroid, its quite possible that you are not converting T4 to T3 like you should be. If that's the case, a med like Armour or Thyrolar may help. They help symptoms such as fatigue, depression, brain fog, hairloss, and muscle and joint aches. I've been on Levoxyl. I've been on Cytomel with Levoxyl and I am now on Armour. I feel the best on Armour. About iodine...yes, many who are hypothyroid are low in iodine. THE RDA a,mount of iodine is just enough to prevent goiter. Years ago, there was iodine in our breads. It is no longer used, so the population is taking in a far lesser amount than say 20-30 years ago. However, you need to get your thyroid levels correct first, then see if you have a deficiency. Many do great on iodine. I am on it, but I got my thyroid levels right first. If you don't need it and take it, you could bring on more trouble."

Hescomingsoon replied: "hypothyroidism is an iodine deficiency (Kelp will help that) you might want to consider Armour natural bovine or porcine"

side effects of Levothyroxine? (Synthroid) HELP!!!? I have hypothyroidism, and just 2wks ago I got put on the generic of Synthroid..Levothyroxine. now i seem to feel worse than b/f i started the meds. My glands in my neck are swollen and sore, I have bad joint pain all the time, and Im soo tired, and i am itchy. Anyone know anything about this???!!! I dont know where to go from here. someone mentioned a possibility of iodine deficiency? Please answer only if you KNOW! thanks! im on 25mcg daily. also, does it matter what time it is taken? I try to take it at five every morn with water, then go back to bed. im just so tired of hurting and feeling tired with swollen lymph nodes! should i switch meds or something?

Yvette C replied: "Are you absolutely sure you recieved Levothyroxine form the pharmacy? There have been numerous cases of medication errors by pharmacists with this medication. Please take your pills and yourself back to your doctor ASAP. Make sure the doctor knows your symtoms and looks at the pills in your bottle also. Good Luck"

Just Breathe replied: "I too have hypothyroidism. I was on Synthroid for about 7 years and recently (about three months ago) switched to levothyroxine due to cost. I haven't had any of the problems you mentioned. My daughter is also on levothyroxine and has been problem free. By any chance are you on any cholesterol lowering drugs?"

JK replied: "You can be allergic to the generic form of synthroid. Simple as that. It sounds like you definitely need the synthroid though because joint pains, swollen glands and sleepiness are related to being in a hypothyroid state. The itching is probably due to the allergy, it is important that you let your doctor know ASAP about this."

Kristy J replied: "HI, I also have hypothyroidism. I have had it for 11 years. I know that if you were taking synthroid before and your levels were normal, and then you switched to the levothyroxine, then that can through your levels off a bit. That happened to me. I was on 50 mcg of synthroid for years and then one day I picked up my medicine at the pharm. and they had switched it to levothyroxine, I never thought nothing of it and then I started feeling so tired and I just knew my levels were off, so I called my dr and asked if I could come in to get them rechecked and sure enough, I needed to increase. I now take 100 mcg of levothyroxine and he told me to stay on levo- because since the thyroid is so sensitive anyways, the slightest change can throw it off. I bet thats whats wrong with you. Call your Dr. Monday and gets there advice, but if youve only been on Levo for 2 weeks, your bloodwork wont be accurate until youve been on it for 6 weeks. Whatever he says, I would definitely recheck blood work in 4 more weeks. Well Good Luck, I feel for you, I know that when your levels get all out of whack, it can make you feel horrible. I hope you get better soon!!"

jimmymae2000 replied: "You didn't mention what dose the Dr. started you out on. They usually start with low dose so as not to shock your system, in my case it was 25mcg for first month."

DNA replied: "I replied to your other question, but I decided to reply again just so you see my response. Plus the extra 2 points is nice as well. Joint pains and fatigue are symptoms of the hypothyroidism itself. It's quite possible that you will do better on Synthroid. Each of is are different. When you find a thyroid med that works, stick with it. My daughter takes synthroid for hypothyroidism and has become very emotional and hyper. Is this normal? She has been on syntroid since August. She is 8 years old. She has become very high-strung, can't sit still, talks NON stop and cries at the drop of a hat! She also gets mad very easily and seemingly can't control her temper (yells and throws things). I have not seen this as a side effect to the meds. I am wondering if anyone else has had this experience with child?

janey33 replied: "Her dosage may need adjusting, it sounds as though it is a little high at present. Don't forget, she's growing all the time and her dosage will probably need to be changed throughout her childhood anyway. See her paediatrician, I'm sure this can be sorted out, ok?"

Rookie President oObama replied: "Read the side effects on the prescription. It would be better if you researched it at web MD"

Cribber replied: "The yelling and throwing things.. I don't know about that, but I do know it can cause hyper behaviour and feelings of extreme anxiety which might be making her lash out. I have a friend who started drinking tart cherry juice for a joint problem and then as a side effect, her thyroid kicked back into action and she was able to get off the synthroid. that is supposedly impossible, but that is what happened. You might want to give it a try. If you can't find it in the grocery store, you can get it online as a concentrate. One bottle of concentrate is like $13 and it makes a LOT of juice."

Ski owl replied: "well you have gotten used to her being depressed prior to the synthroid and this may be how she would have been if she had normal thyroid activity. BUT I personally would ring the doctor and tell him what you said here and request another blood test. maybe her dose needs adjustment."

geessewereabove replied: "I was shock once after I had been on Synthroid for years that my newer doctor said my Thyroid was not dead. I was stunned! I found out that stress can kill a thyroid for only the time the person is stressed. So it may be she is not stressed anymore and dose not need the Synthroid either."

Kelsey replied: "This is both normal and not normal. Basically, the job of synthroid is to replace the thyroid hormone that your body naturally produces. If there is too much of the hormone, it basically, throws your body into a hyper-metabolic state (which is what hyperthyroidism is). These things you've described are side effects of the medication, but also an indication that her dose is too high. People with hyperthyroidism are very emotional, anxious, antsy and have mood swings. I would take your daughter to the doc who prescribed the meds and explain to them what's going on. They can draw her t3 and t4 levels to get a better picture of whether or not the levels are too high. if they are, she needs to have her dosage of synthroid reduced."

Hypothyroidism, Severe Symptoms with Synthroid? A year or two ago I was diagnosed with Hypothyroidism, and was put on Levothyroxine (Synthroid). I'm sixteen, now. Could these be symptoms of intolerance to the drug? Can Synthroid cause side affects such as these? What do I do?

Lisa A replied: "You are listing symptoms of hypothyroidism. Your hypothyroidism is not adequately treated. You need new blood tests and you need to have your dosage changed. You need new blood tests every 6 weeks. If your doctor left you a year or two with no follow up blood tests, he needs to be fired."

limabean replied: "Synthroid wouldn't cause those side-effects. A lack of Synthroid would cause those side-effects. So in other words, if your prescription is too low, you might be suffering from the symptoms of hypothyroidism. On the flip side, if you are being prescribed too high of a dosage you will experience complete opposite symptoms. The low blood sugar isn't related to your thyroid, your doctor is right about that. But don't just toss it to the side. Ask for a test to see if you are hypoglycemic. The best thing to do would be to demand a full-panel thyroid test. Most doctors won't do it because it will cost the patient a lot more money than their normal T3 and thyroid uptake tests. Some things CAN be overlooked, even by your doctor. So don't give up. Feel better hon!"

cbrdgt replied: "It sounds like your dose is too low. Your TSH needs to be checked to make sure your levels are correct."

Can synthroid cause erectile dysfunction? I am a 38 year old male with hypothyroidism I have had great results with Synthroid, but the side effects leave me unable to perform sexually. I have also tried natural thyroid replacement, no sexual side effects but do not feel good on that medication. Any man with this problem? Please reply.

Chicaloca replied: "I don't think the synthroid is your problem. My husband is on that medication for the same condition and he doesn't have any problems performing sexually. He is always ready to go. Check with your doctor you may have a different problem."

L S replied: "Julius Caesar."

golgofrinchian replied: "I take synthroid too. I have never had that problem. Are you taking any other meds like an antidepressant? I checked webMD and there is no indication of any erectile dysfunction."

jessiekatsopolous replied: "Ask a doctor or pharmacist, moron."
