I'm going cold turkey off of tramadol, any tips that can help me? Tramadol is a non narcotic but very addictive prescription pain reliever. I tried weaning myself but my psychological dependence on the drug gets in my way. Do you have any advice or tips that might lessen the withdrawal or just make it a little easier? I'm taking 2 50mg pills twice a day, how long until the worst part of the withdrawal is over ad how long until i should feel normal again?

dan replied: "just stop taking them. You'll be fine. it's not like you are an alcoholic or a heroin addict. your body will adjust back to the way it was before in a couple weeks. When I quit smoking cigs I would chew gum or get a small bite to eat when I had an urge to smoke."

bigbirdmar replied: "my mum took herself off tramadol,I think it took a while for her to feel"normal"again, but she's fine now,,,just try and stick with it...good luck it will be worth it in the end.... :-)"

Chasn replied: "Going cold turkey is the only way with tramadol...it took me 9 days to get over the withdrawal effects and normal again can be another few weeks...depending on what you were taking it for in the first place"

Robin C replied: "i was on ultram for 2 weeks for mouth pain and the worst withdrawal symptom was this light nauseous feeling, it passes in about 3-4 days"

G replied: "Some drugs are dangerous to go off of cold turkey, I would recommend you speak to your doctor about this first, but as for the withdrawls and how long they will last, it depends on your total body weight, amount of body fat, and how much water you drink. The more water you drink the faster you will flush it out of you system. But don't go over board on the water either cause that can cause a water overdose. SO try to drink around 6 8oz glasses a day, but not all at once."

Brian W replied: "I also go cold turkey, after 3 days of feeling like crap [night sweats, insomnia , unbearable leg cramps, generally feeling tired and irritable] you will feel somewhat better. It usually takes a good week to feel normal. In the meantime take some tylenol p.m. or nyquil at bedtime.xanax or valium is best if you have some. I find tramadol withdrawls worse than anything, even heroin. Good luck!"

I'm going cold turkey off of tramadol starting Friday of this weekend? I tried weaning myself but my psychological dependence on the drug gets in my way. Do you have any advice or tips that might lessen the withdrawal or just make it a little easier? I'm taking 2 50mg pills twice a day, how long until the worst part of the withdrawal is over ad how long until i should feel normal again? tramadol is a non-narcotic but very addictive prescription pain reliever ive been on them for almost two years

Billie77 replied: "Here's what I suggest you do to help you get over the psychological dependence on this drug. Believe me you will feel better after one week of doing what I have recommended. Here is what I suggest to get you over the worst part of the withdrawals. To help with the withdrawals take hot bathes with 2c. of dissolved Epsom salts and soak for 30 minutes. The skin is the biggest organ of elimination and this will help pull out the drugs. Use a loofa to clean the pores and this will help pull the drugs out even faster. I recommend you drink purified water mixed with mineral water 50/50. This will replace the minerals that are exiting your body continuously. I suggest that adults and children drink 40 ounces of water per 100 pounds of body weight every day and 2c. a day of fresh carrot juice, to flush the medicine out of your liver. Taking 500mg of calcium and magnesium twice a day will help you to relax. Drink chamomile tea throughout the day and evening to help you stay relaxed. Use a powdered fiber supplement twice daily to pull the drugs out of your intestines where they store. Two of the questionnaires in this forum did follow this program to withdraw from drugs and it did help. I've enclosed a link where you can read their response to this program. If you have any further questions please let me know, Billie77 "

nurseflowergirl replied: "the best way to go off the med is to taper. try cutting the pills and taking portions.you may also use benadryl to keep yourself a little more calm, follow the directions on the bottle. then distract yourself the best you can.try pacving around. i dont know how long youve been on the med to say how long u will detox, but goodluck to you;)michele"

doktorangbaliw replied: "What I did was I finished all my tramadol and didn't get my Rx refilled even if I could. I made a decision to go off the meds and I stuck to it. Drink lots of water. Entertain yourself by reading a book, watch a movie, etc. Look for other ways to deal with the pain - the non-medical ones - exercise, diet, etc. My withdrawal symptoms lasted for about 5 days and I was on tramadol for about 4 years, 100mg twice a day. I even went up to 200mg twice a day for a time."

how long does insomia last after goin cold turkey off tramadol, dihydrocodeine, codeine, stop takin them 18 dy ag i was takin dihydrocodeine, tramadol and codeine, stopped 18 days ago have no energy and bad insomia, can anyone tell me how long this will last for, doctors will not give me sleeping tablets as i wud be going from one addiction to another

lazyboy_sp2004 replied: "idk... but glad you quit, tramadol causes seizures!"

Lucky Man 2 replied: "A week or two at the worst. Stay strong it will get better."

reneejoy30 replied: "ultram, shouldn't cause you not to sleep but with breakthrough pain, good luck and buy over-the-counter non habit forming sleep aide."

nettie replied: "i feel for you after been given what you've been on plus morphine for back surgery. Theworst time of my life and I can empathise the way you are feeling. Yes it is going to be hard and honestly you ought not be having to deal with this on your own. I did but it nearly sent me over the edge. Are you getting support from anyone if not I suggest strongly that you ask just in case you are unable to cope with the withdrawal symptoms. I wish I could be there for you but I shall be thinking about you. Do try and exercise as this helps with the process too."

Samurai replied: "Oh my gosh do I feel for you. I am currently coming off some meds myself. Here is how it works, you have to calculate how long the meds actually stay in your system. You have to look this up in the PDR. Then, your first 30 days are the worst. For me, I took the last pill on April 24, 2008. During the first week of May, I actually stayed up for 4 days straight without taking any sleep aid. It took all of my willpower to not blow my brains out. I was miserable. Then, in June, my sleep went to about 4-5 hours a night, July it was like 5-6 hours and now in August I sleep like 6-7 hours. But I cannot seem to really fall asleep before 2:00am no matter what. It is all in your adrenals. Don't drink alcohol, cokes, coffee or definately no booze. Do NOT do sleeping pills. That will make you worse. Best of luck to you."

Mish replied: "Ask your Dr. to prescribe you clonidine, it should help. They sometimes us that as a help with withdrawal symptoms and high blood pressure."

how long does it take to feel normal again after going cold turkey on tramadol 100mg tablets? i have been taking 100mg tramadol tablets for about a year now.i have had problems with my back for about fifteen years now.at first the doctors prescribed me with a high dosage of co codamols.they worked fine allthough i felt high as a kite on them.my body became immune to these tablets so the doctor prescribed me 100mg of tramadol tablets.they worked brilliant for the pain but now my whole life revolves around these blasted tablets.im very mood, can be very depressed,my sex drive has totally gone, when i go on a night out,i cant enjoy myself as alcohol doesnt mix with painkillers.i have now decided to try and come off these tablets cold turkey.ive tried the weaning method but couldnt handle the pain,so im just going to go cold turkey and be rid of theses tablets...for good! i want my life back and enjoy life again!!! ive read different opinions of what kinds of withdrawals to expect.to be honest im not scared because like i said i want to be normal again.my wife and i have set a date for when i will go cold turkey, which will be friday 21st november 2008.weve set up our spare room for my rehab.ive just got a bed and a tv with my games console, not like i will be in the mood for it.plus loads of lucozade and need to buy loads of soup because that will be all i will want to eat.if anyones got any idea what day i will begin to show signs of when i will be normal again would be great.just a day so it gives me a goal to aim for.everybody has there own way of coming off prescribed pain killers, this is mine.just want to flush them out of my system forever!!!

Megan replied: "I really don't know how anyone can be addicted to tramadol!? There isnt any narcotics in them,it's just like taking a tylenol. I refuse to take them when they are prescribed to me,because i may as well just take a tylenol. Now vicodin or percocet ya! but not ultram."

ricks_incolorado replied: "Good luck to you and your plight. i'm on tramadol, 50 mg tabs for over a month now and I'm feeling like I am really enjoying the pain killer. I'm gald you posted this question because now I can see what my future may hold. I hope you get the answer your looking for."

nona yabidness replied: "ur going thru withdrawls sweetie. u taper off of the pills, never stop cold turkey. that way u dont go thru the dt's. but if this is the way u wana go, its gonna be a while until ur over them. about a week or 2. taper off of them, dont quit cold turkey."

Robin G replied: "The first thing you need to do is figure out why your sex drive is low and try to help get it back. I was in your situation and it's not fun without being horny and feeling in the mood when needed. I also felt like my orgasms (if I would even get one) were really weak. Probably because of my sex drive. However, I tried exercising and dieting but nothing seemed to be working. I thought I was screwed. I then found something just as amazing as the vibrator. My friend at work told me about this stuff she took to raise her sex drive. It was a natural herbal supplement and was I lucky to of found it. Theres no side effects and the sex drive is just tremendous along with orgasms that are blasting. The stuff is called Hersolution pills. At the time I saved money on them at herenhancement.com What I did was tried out for 3 months and that was really it. I found taking them every other day or so was the best to stretch it out. After the months were up, I was back to normal with a beating sex drive and my orgasm strength in increased so much. Well good luck and I hope this helps."

what is the best way to stay off tramadol? ive been on tramadol which is codene based for a few years i have managed to come off them a few times cold turkey and the withdrawls are horrific but manage to get through that but find a few weeks later i find im craving them and back on them as they are very highly addictive. Has anybody been through similar and how did they get off them and stay off them. zydol and codydramol are the same incase people dont recognise the name tramadol. also i try to make sure none are in the house to tempt me i was told by a doctor that they were codene based

Dr Frank replied: "I am concerned that your addiction is much more psychological than physical. Though an opiate analogue, not codeine based, tramadol has a very low tendency to produce physical addiction. Have a chat with your GP to get some help."

synthetic messiah replied: "Codeine withdrawal is a joke. Stop taking the pills and be done with it unless you want to move onto Oxycodone, Oxymorphone, Fentanyl, and so on. Then, you will have REAL withdrawal and will probably never get off pain killers after that. I sugguest quitting while you're ahead."

J Ancelotti replied: "Dont take it. its not codene"

Getting off tramadol? I have been using tramadol for a month but only about 300 mg a day, in the past I have been up to 20- 30 50mg pills a day. I know its crazy. The other day I slipped up and took 18 pills and I was really sedated all day. How do I get off this drug and stay off? the thing is even if I take a lot it doesnt get me high just sedated or feeling midly retarded, and I take a low dose it gives me energy but it never packs the punch of an opiate. The withdrawl is horrible, terrible misery at 20 pills a day cold turkey ( I have done it) and even 300 mgs a day is bad. How can get off the crap? I get the meds for free every month but my mom uses them to for knee pain but she doesnt abuse them like me.

Peaches replied: "Since you have withdrawn before and then proceeded to go back on the medication, even though you know the hell it is to come off, then your best bet is to get into a rehab facility. You have an addiction and the last time you went through the withdrawals was obviously not enough of a lesson to keep you away from them again. Since you abuse this medication, you will abuse any other opiate medication if given the opportunity. If you don't want to or can't go to rehab, then all you can do is try to wean yourself off the drug as slowly as possible to keep the withdrawals to a minimum. Taking that much Tramadol can be very dangerous since anything over 300 mg a day can cause seizures and coming off this stuff cold turkey can also cause seizures in addition to the typical withdrawals. If you do not have enough to wean, then you have to go through that hellish process all over again and then you need to tell someone, like your mom, so that you can get help for your problem. You need to see a counselor or go to NA meetings to increase your odds of staying clean the 2nd time around."

Michelle D replied: "Do not stop taking tramadol without talking to your doctor. Your doctor will probably decrease your dose gradually. If you suddenly stop taking tramadol you may experience withdrawal symptoms such as nervousness; panic; sweating; difficulty falling asleep or staying asleep; runny nose, sneezing, or cough; numbness, pain, burning, or tingling in your hands or feet; hair standing on end; chills; nausea; uncontrollable shaking of a part of your body; diarrhea; or rarely, hallucinations (seeing things or hearing voices that do not exist)."

ceoadamj558 replied: "You probably need to consult with your physician on this. 18 50mg pills a day is WAY beyond the recommended dosage. You run the risk of having a seizure or respritory failure by doing this. Tramadol lowers the seizure threshold and decreases respiration. You need to come off GRADUALLY. I would recommend dropping 50mg every 2-3 days until you get down to about 200 mg a day and then decrease by 50mg every 5-7 days. Once you get down to 50mg you can split the pill up in half or quarters. That is what I did when I came off and now I have no dependence to the drug. Quitting cold turkey will give you sweats, tremors, and anxiety."

I need some help - suffering panic attacks? I came off tramadol, went cold turkey 19 days ago. I've been through the worst of the side effects. I know God wants me off them as they change my personality. They numb my emotions and don't make me care as much about stuff. However I am now suffering from panic attacks at the thought of going to see my family on Thursday. I am stubborn, but not stubborn enough to cope with this. I need to experience God in a real way to help me get me through this.

Amber replied: "Or you need different meds. Try talking to your doctor if you really want help."

Yaya replied: "There is an Arabic saying about "trust Allah, but row your boat to shore," or something close. In other words, you've accomplished a great deal and your boat is about to reach the shore. Getting thru Thursday in one piece will only add to your success. Take deep breaths when anyone says something you don't like. Respond -- don't just react. Deep breathing can help those panic attacks too."

1theNewguy1 replied: "try valium...just kidding. just go, panic is a natural occurence"

Rugbyidiot replied: "One moment at a time. Anxiety is rough; but you have to realize that what is in your head is just that, in your head. Reality is much simpler and much easier to deal with than what your anxieties may project."

Elanshaw replied: "You should never go cold turkey off any meds. The best thing you should do is ask your doctor to change your medicine or lower the dose. Tramadol may not be for you..but something else may work and not change your personality."

Samuel replied: "Philipians 4:6-7 answers your question: 6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. 7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. In order to have this peace of God, you must first accept him into your heart and life. Please watch my video that explains from the Bible, how you can do this:"

andrew (one of His sheep) replied: "Thank you for sharing this, I am praying for you, and I am sure that others will too. I just want to remind you of a precious promise, 2 Corinthians 12:9 And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 10 Therefore I take pleasure in infirmities, in reproaches, in necessities, in persecutions, in distresses for Christ's sake: for when I am weak, then am I strong. Keep looking to the Lord and trusting in His might and power, His grace is amazing and He will cause you to be triumphant even in the midst of your trials. It is when we admit our weakness before the Lord and trust in Him that we are strong, and yet it is not us, but Christ in us that strengthens us and will carry us through. I would also love to share another precious promise that I have stood on many times, 2 Timothy 1:7 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. This is what God desires in our lives, He doesn't want us to be controlled by ungodly fears; don't focus on the things that could go wrong when you visit your family, or even the things that have gone wrong before. Just focus on Jesus, and know that with God all things are possible. He is able to touch every heart and open every eye, keep your focus on the Lord and trust in His might and power, He will carry you through, and truly His grace causes us to triumph in all situations. 2 Corinthians 2:14 Now thanks be unto God, which always causeth us to triumph in Christ, and maketh manifest the savour of his knowledge by us in every place. Keep looking to the Lord, and trust in Him and what He said, God has the final word, He has the authority. I love the desire that you expressed " I need to experience God in a real way to help me get through this." You keep looking to Him and calling on the name of Jesus, I know that He does make Himself known to us, and I couldn't make it without Him either. May the grace or our Lord Jesus Christ be with you, with much love and sincerity in Christ, andrew"

lil bit replied: "First thing is to talk to God. He can answer your questions better than anyone. Ask him to guide you through and help you get through these things. Talk to a doctor and see if they can prescribe you something to prevent it."

Can a dog get addicted to Tramadol in 4 days? My 11 yr old Great Dane has bone cancer, we where told this 3 yrs ago and at the time he was given 6 months. Due to the cancer he has become thin and someone reported me as starving him, He was removed from my care for 3 days and during the time was put on Tramadol 50mg. I had decided to treat holistically and was managing his pain, since he has been put on the drug he is now listless and can hardly walk. I was told the drug was addictive and that I cant take him off of it cold but that I would have to wean him off of it. I am wondering if he could be addicted in just 3 days as I would rather not give him drugs since he is now worse since he was put on them. Can I stop cold turkey and if not how can I wean him off, no one will tell me as they insist that I am being cruel by choosing to feed him a raw based diet and treat his cancer holistically. Any help, advice or personal experiences would be appreciated. Thanks for all the advice so far, Last night my dog was on the drugs and was very listless and not quite coherent when he went out to pee it was like he had forgot how to walk. I did not give him a pill today and he is now alert, coherent, sitting up on the bed, eating, and went out to the potty with no problems walking. I understand that he is terminal however after witnessing what the drugs where doing to him and seeing him all happy and alert tonight I have made up my mind to do the best to control his pain holistically and enjoy the time we have left. He is very good at letting me know when he is in distress and when the time comes we will do things at home with the family around him, but I am going to let him live as long as he wants too as I know he will let me know when he is ready to go. I know he would not enjoy life as a zombie so I am not going to make him live that way when there are other options out there.

mmcrobinson replied: "My sympathies go out to you and your beloved pet.... I hope this helps you "

Savanahs Mommy replied: "yes it is... its a type of morphine... I found this on it: What are the side effects ? If you experience any of the following serious side effects, stop taking tramadol and seek emergency medical attention or contact your doctor immediately: an allergic reaction (difficulty breathing; closing of your throat; swelling of your lips, tongue, or face; or hives); or seizures. Other, less serious side effects may be more likely to occur. Continue to take tramadol and talk to your doctor if you experience dizziness, drowsiness, or headache; nervousness, tremor, or anxiety; nausea, vomiting, constipation, or diarrhea; or itching, dry mouth, or sweating. Tramadol is habit forming. Physical and / or psychological dependence can occur, and withdrawal effects are possible if the medication is stopped suddenly after prolonged or high-dose treatment. Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially bothersome. *****I might have a solution for you... the vet I worked for had used a homeopathic medicine...you could contact her via e-mail... its on her web page and she might be able to help you... she has a contact page...ask her and she could help you...smile GOOD LUCK!!! (she is great and you will love her!!)"

Yes I am here!! replied: "take him to half a pill . 50mg for a dog is fairly strong. Yes he could be addicted in the 4 days he has been on it. If he still lies around on half a pill go to a quarter or try to get a 25mg and cut it in half. When you get to a dose that he is able to take leave it there. Why make him suffer. The tramadol is not narcotic but it does have a tendency to mentally slow some animals down which makes them lie around if the dose is to large."

sniffydogs replied: "A raw diet and holistic treatment isn't going to treat cancer. It's like putting a band-aid on a broken leg. Your Dane has lived a long life. He is terminal and you aren't going to turn him around. Tramadol does work and I wouldn't take him off of it. Perhaps it's time to think about taking him to the bridge. Have a talk with your vet about humanely ending his suffering."

Sequel replied: "Do you love that dog? I want you to ask yourself How Much You Love That Dog? He has struggled for 3 years and has been in pain. Now you say he is bone-thin and can't even walk! You need to give your dog the most loving gift he ever had, and that is to let him go. Free him from pain, how long will you let it go on? Tell him you love him enough to give him peace. Very soon."

FruitCakeLady replied: "The dog is suffering. Do the right thing."

GG replied: "I too believe in trying natural homeopathics and such in treating my dogs and foster dogs. There is absolutely nothing wrong with a raw diet. Many of my friends feed raw and their dogs are hale and hearty. You have to do what you feel is best for your dog.You sound like you're comfortable with your decision and know your dog well.I believe you'll make the right decision when the time comes and in the meantime you go ahead and love that old man up in his last days.My heart goes out to you b/c I too have a very senior boy who's almost totally deaf and blind with a heart murmur. He still loves life and his ambles around the backyard and comes on in following my voice.I know he too will tell me when it's time.I would probably wean him off it rather than cold turkey.I'd break the doses down in 1/2 over a few days.Just watch him for anything that's not his normal behavior."

Mandy replied: "You kept him alive for 3 years, the pills were supposed to help him but didn't, it did the opposite, I don't know about you or anyone else here but I would take that as a sign that its getting close to his time to go. I'm sorry."

Tramadol withdrawal symptoms;how long does it last? So my friend has been off Tramadol for 5 days now. She had been taking 2 pills a week for a mont or 2 before she quit cold turkey. She's been experiencing very bad and intensive stomach pains, headaches and she's feeling quite upset almost all the time. How long will these withdrawal side effects last??? 2 weeks?? More?? Now when I look at this question it looks like I'm actually the one on Tramadol and I'm using that typical technique of covering it up with, u know, "My friend....".... lol... But seriously, it's not me. I could handle the pain easily but it's really tough for my friend. She started having hope again though so I'm feeling pretty confident about her making it through this. I've been praying a lot....I hope it turns out ok. :-)

johir j replied: "lasted me 2 to 3 weeks but you must be strong to get of it. Also depends on how resistant your body is to medicines."

J Ancelotti replied: "2 pills a week? You shouldn't have any withdrawals from 2 pills a week. Its probably something else that just happen at the time she stopped the tramadol."

DynoDiKk replied: "21 days for it to get out of her. I t might take longer to feel normal."

rtinsley30 replied: "ultram/tramadol is the only anti inflammatory that is not a narcotic but attaches to the brain like a narcotic, so saying that there is probably only a small percentage of an ingredient missing from tramadol which would make it a narcotic. that's why it is hard to get off of"

Non-pharmaceutical method to lessen Tramadol (Ultram) withdrawal.? My friend has been on Ultram 50mg every 3-4 hours for chronic back pain. His doctor has now cut off his supply cold-turkey. He is having terrible withdrawal symptoms; is there any way to decrease his symptoms without putting him on yet another medication?

Chas B replied: "Don't try to detox yourself. If he has been getting Rx pain medication for a back problem let the doctor lower the dosage safely. He may give him clonapine or something like that to help but do it through the doctor. Withdrawls from pain killers can last about 7-10 days and then count on about 6 months of having severe sleep problems"

US_DR_JD replied: "There is controversy over whether or not Tramadol is addictive or not. But my experience and now some studies are showing significant issues with withdrawal from the medication. The benefit is that Tramadol has a short half-life, so the withdrawal period, while uncomfortable, is much shorter than many opiates. Key medical problems are blood pressure and the possibility of seizures. While there is little that can be done about the seizure potential except to observe, it is good to understand that Tramadol is known to lower the seizure threshold in those prone to seizures. The other issue is blood pressure. Elevations in blood pressure could lead to cardiac issues and stroke. The blood pressure should be monitored during the withdrawal period and the patient taken to the A&E if it becomes significantly elevated. If your physician is available, he/she may be willing to monitor and prescribe a low dose antihypertensive during this period. Nausea and vomiting are not uncommon, and medications for this are helpful. Tapering usually is somewhat effective with Tramadol as it has a shorter half life, so decreasing to 50mg/day prior to stopping may help with withdrawal issues. However, the physician has probably stopped prescribing the medication due to overuse, and would be unlikely to try a taper. Tramadol is never meant to be taken every 3 hours, and when a patient is taking it on this schedule, it is usually by their own choice, and not following the precription. The following nutritional guidance may be helpful during the withdrawal period. Oral nutrition: Increase the right proteins!!!! Proteins are the building blocks for neurotransmitters and neurotransmitter receptors…as well as the building blocks for your natural opiate receptors • For 3 weeks you must remove all red meats from your diet. Red meat has chemical components that increase inflammation and pain. Fish, chicken, eggs are good sources of protein. If you are having a hard time taking in solid foods go to a health food store and buy protein powders that can be made into smoothies or drinks. You absolutely must have increased protein intake…proteins are the building blocks for all enzymes, neurotransmitters, and enzyme receptors in the body. No chemical works in the body without receptors. Just like opioids have to have opioid receptors. • L-Methionine—a sulfur bearing amino acid…necessary for the production of S-Adenosyl-methionine (SAM-e)…SAM-e is a necessary cofactor in the production of the master neurotransmitters—serotonin, dopamine, adrenalin, and nor-adrenalin…this must be added to any amino acid therapy directed at rebuilding neurotransmitter production and function…500 mg—two twice per day • Increase your intake of raw fruits and vegetables…you get little or nothing from canned foods…fresh fruits and veggies are loaded with fiber which help bind and remove toxins from your body…they also normalize gut function • Stay off candy, and other sugar heavy foods • Drink lots of good water, green teas are good for the antioxidants and anti-inflammatory properties…no cokes or soda waters for three weeks • When capable you must start exercising…swimming is best because it is low impact exercise…yoga…tai chi…walking daily…detoxing or otherwise…exercise is a normal component of good health. Supplements: Some need less and some more…remember the efficacy of all nutrition and supplement use is ultimately guided by your genetics…and we are all different to some degree… Multivitamin with a strong mineral component: in gel caps only…an excellent quality multivitamin is absolutely necessary…remember that vitamins and minerals are cofactors/coenzymes for repair, healing, and normal function of the body…most times I have patients double up on multivitamins for the first 3-4 weeks Mineral complex: see above Fish oils, or flax seed oil.: necessary for repair and proper function of cellular membranes…anti-inflammatory…these need to be mixed omega 3, omega 6, omega 9 oils—4000 to 6000 mg per day in split doses…although some can be purchased as liquids and mixed with your smoothies. If you don’t do the drinks…get proteins as free amino acids…double up L-Glutamine 500mg caps…at least 2000-3000 mg per day…split the dose so that your doing it at least twice per day…helps heal the gut and the building block for GABA…the primary inhibitory neurotransmitter…helps slow things down…Do not take GABA as a supplement…GABA is make in the brain…when out side the brain the molecule is to large to cross the blood brain barrier…the building block for GABA is L-Glutamine or Glutamic acid…these building blocks readily cross the blood brain barrier. Valarian Root 450 mg: Botanical that reduces anxiety and helps one to sleep…Kava, Jamaican Dog Wood, Lemon Balm, Avena are all nervine botanicals which can be used together or by self…I find the doses for each individual varies but typically 1000 to 1500 mg every 4 hours. Melatonin…dosages vary…this is a hormone released from the pinal gland in the human body at night time for sleep…this is essential for those coming off opioids…in my experience as little as 1 mg to 30 mg has been effective…do what you have to do…I’ve had addicts coming off $100.00 a day habits sleep 4 hours the first night…start low and add 3-5 mg every half-hour till sleep…research on healthy volunteers using up to 100 mg of melatonin in a single dose shows little side effects…Melatonin is also known as a very strong antioxidant with 1000 times the potency as Vit E…Take only at night when you would be going to bed at the regular time…the room must be dark…that’s the way this hormone is released in the natural state… Full Spectrum antioxidants: relieves inflammation and helps normalize inflammatory pathways and reduces damaging molecules (free radicals) present in the system while detoxing Vitamin C: 2000-3000 mg per day divided doses… Reduced L-Glutathione 300mg per day: Helps liver detox metabolites of methadone…Detoxing agents can be found in many products…most in combinations… Adrenal Support: Research has shown that methadone, and drug use in general, has profound effects on the adrenal glands. In fact, research shows that there is a profound negative effect by opiates on the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. This is why those that withdraw from opiates have protracted fatigue and problems with anxiety and insomnia. I often use freeze dried adrenal extracts in treatment with fairly good results. You’ll find these products listed under names such as Adrenal Plus, or Adrenplus…the starting dose is around 1000 mg per day in split doses. Milk Thistle with alpha-Lipoic Acid is one combination that I use extensively---for liver repair and detoxification…1200 to 1500 mg of milk thistle and 400 mg of lipoic acid per day in split doses This is the basics. There is absolutely no way to eliminate all the problems associated with withdrawal from opiates...one must have a supportive environment and sometimes with daily visits from a compassionate health care provider…This will not kill you…it will be a miserable event… In fact, cold turkey deaths coming off opioids are rare and usually associated with other health problems, or overdosing on prescription medications…withdrawal from opioids is much less of a risk than total withdrawal from alcohol. I wish you all luck on this endeavor…My compassion and empathy goes out to you…Ultimately, I know that he can do this…after all…it has to be done"
