Could effexor XR cause me to have a negative home pregnancy test? I am taking effexor XR 75mg for depression. I am a week and a half late for my period which is always very regular. But I have taken a couple of home pregnancy tests and they are negative, I just wondered if this drug may have something to do with it, and I may be pregnant?

Pregnant with my 1st*shes a girl replied: "Im not sure if it would or not, but I have a cousin who was depressed and was taking effexor and she became pregnant, and didnt know until she was 9 weeks, because her tests kept saying negative. Im not sure if thats coincidence or not though!"

Karlie B replied: "No, i was on the same thing and it was a high dosage and my test came up positive"

thinking..... replied: "the test measures the presence of the pregnancy hormone. the med effexor would not interefere with this. but, you may be pregnant and "not very pregnant" yet, or you could be missing your period for another reason... weight gain, or loss, or stress, or illness (like flu)..."

Miss Lovely replied: "nah I was on a higher dose of effexor xr when i found out i was pregnant..... test was definately positive!"

What effects are there while taking Effexor XR when you actually don't have any depression or anxiety? I'm in the process of weaning off Effexor XR with the help of my doctor. I'm suspicious that I never needed to be on the AD in the first place. I feel like I've been terribly depressed for the past two years, and now that I'm coming off the AD I'm starting to feel better than ever. I'm wondering if taking Effexor when you don't need it could cause depression.

I_Love_McRedneck replied: "Effexor is one of those anti-depressants that deals with a chemical imbalance - if you never had one of those, it would seem logical to think that it might cause an imbalance. It's possible you need to be on an AD, just not an SSRI"

Lindsey replied: "A side effect of most depression drugs is deeper depression. Now, this is pretty rare, but it does happen. The link I included says that 3% of people that took Effexor XR had the side effect of depression. I'm wondering why it took you 2 years to decide the Effexor wasn't working. Or am I reading it wrong? I know when I was on Effexor, I felt horrible. I didn't have any emotion. So, I guess it is possible."

•√¡rgő• replied: "I think the Effexor stopped working for me after a couple of years. I had been addicted to it for 7 years and unable to quit until a doctor helped me. I came off Effexor XR and I feel a lot better. The drug made me tired most of the time. Lots of people report feeling like a zombie while on anti-depressants. I wasn't able to cry or feel guilt like a normal person would. I would say things that would hurt people and not care. Effexor made me lethargic. Now that I'm off, I really don't feel any difference from when I was on it depression-wise. I do have more energy, I can cry again and I'm angrier and want to succeed more than before. When I was down to 37.5 mg and it was time for me to quit, my Dr. put me on a low dose of Wellbutrin and some Ativan. The 3rd day without Effexor was HELL but please don't give up. You will get the head flashes/jolts about once every 10 seconds for 2 or 3 days. It's awful! After the 3rd day, it goes away steadily. I stayed in bed for 3 days and didn't move. On the 4th day, the sick feeling reduced by half. On the 5th day, it reduces by half from the day before, and kept reducing by half from the previous day until it completely stopped. It took about a week but only 3 or 4 days were extremely bad. It's a hard few weeks but being able to not be addicted to Effexor is priceless. You will feel better. I haven't taken Effexor or had a head flash in months. :) It's awesome. I only take Ativan now when my anxiety is bad. The depression comes and goes but I find that the best solution is to FORCE myself to make small, positive changes in my life to keep my spirits up. Best of Luck!"

melancholycoffee replied: "Anxiety pills and anti-depressents affect your seratonan levels. If you don't have a chemical imbalance that needs fixing, it'll try to fix it anyway, resulting in CREATING a chemical imbalance. I have used Xanax (an anxiety medicine) and anxiety pills for recreation and found that it caused me to be irritable after several months. I didn't get depressed and didn't see any major signs of any problems, but it did alter things for me slightly. I couldn't remember ANYTHING, even 10 minutes later, not a bit. My memory is a lot better than those days, but I still can't remember much of anything, even after barely doing it in a year. That seems to be the main problem. Each person is different, though, and medicine affects each person much differently. You may find that it does, indeed, make you get very angry, or that you can't remember anything, but the most common thing that drugs like this will do is make you depressed. I wouldn't doubt that the Effexor was the cause of your depression. Your chemicals are probably finally balancing out."

Effexor XR? Hello. does anyone here take Effexor XR for depression or anxiety? does it help ya? Has it caused you to lose weight? Thank you!

mickey replied: "I take effexor xr and it has helped me alot. I take it for anxiety and depression also. It has not caused me to loose weight or to gain weight, it has just helped me with my anxiety and depression."

Dutch replied: "Hi, I took Effexor XR for several years. It did help. I never lost weight on it but it did help with my depression and anxiety. I only quit taking it because it pooped out on me. I wish you much luck with your medication...nobody truly understands unless they have been there. One AD that will help with weight loss is Wellbutrin, I don't think it helps much with anxiety though, in fact I'm finding just the opposite. Good luck."

deshane2530 replied: "I took it for awhile and had no appetite. So yes I did lose weight on it. It did not help much with my depression though this time."

Tonia replied: "I've been on effexor. It helped (for a while) with the depression but did nothing for my anxiet or panic attacks. It didn't do anything with my weight... Good Luck"

Effexor XR and Difficulty Writing Since? Relatively recently I have gotten back on the Effexor XR anti-depressant and anxiety drug after being off of it for nearly 6 months. Ever since, I find it extremely difficult to write in the same manner that I use to. Is the drug somehow affecting my ability to write? Has anyone ever heard of this? Or is it just my depression that is causing this difficulty?

native replied: "i don't know i never wrote that good before i was put on effexor, so it may be a side effect. check with your doctor."

spookyoneseven replied: "Could be.I've been on Effexor XR 300mgs. daily (I know that's a lot) for several years. I feel more "scrambled" and it reflects in my writing. Also I have more trouble being able to focus. But overall, it has been the most effective med for MY chronic depression and I've tried most all of them. It's a small price to pay to keep me away from the black pit that I used to bein for so many years. My friends, family and co-workers feel comfortable enough to joke about my "scatteredness" and so do I. Hope this helps. But I would ask your doc if the change in your writing is bothersome to you.You may just need to change the dosage. Peace"

Can taking Effexor XR and Oxycontin be bad for you? I have been on Effexor XR for about 2 weeks now for depression/anxiety and I was just wondering if taking Oxycontin or any other opiates like it can cause a bad reaction..???

Jade Leprechaun replied: "i took oxycotin after surgery and it really screws with ur head best avoided unless absolutely needed for bad pain"

fryberger2003 replied: "Yes, Effexor XR will multiply the effect of the narcotic, result in unconsciousness and possibly death. This goes for alcohol, too. Do not use without consulting a physican first."

USMCgrlandMommy replied: "This is a question for your Doctor only. By asking this on here sounds like these pills aren't meant for you and may be taking them illegally. If I am wrong accept my apology and explain why you need to take these pills. My husband takes anti-depressants and pain pills but never together since he is afraid of mixing them ans the effects. VA doctors don't seem to care. But he was injured in Iraq and has severe back problems and to destroyed knees"

How can I tell if my back pain is from depression or from menopause? I have always been depressed. I take an antidepressant, Effexor XR. Antidepressants cause me to gain weight. I don't want to have the dose upped if this pain is from menopause. Any suggestions? thanks...female 48.

peenuts replied: "Women may have different signs or symptoms at menopause. •Irregularity in periods: Irregularity in periods is one of the earliest changes that a woman may notice. Periods around menopause can last shorter or longer; bleeding can be less or more To make sure there isn’t a problem, see your doctor if: · Your periods come very close together · You have heavy bleeding · You have spotting · Your periods last more than a week •Hot flashes: A hot flash is a sudden feeling of heat in the upper part or all of your body. Your face and neck become flushed. Red blotches may appear on your chest, back, and arms. Heavy sweating and cold shivering can follow. Flashes can be very mild or strong enough to wake you from your sleep (called night sweats). Most hot flashes last between 30 seconds to 10 minutes. •Problems with your vagina and bladder: Changing estrogen levels can cause your genital area to get drier and thinner. This could make sexual intercourse uncomfortable. Or, you could have more vaginal or urinary infections. Some women find it hard to hold their urine long enough to get to the bathroom. Sometimes urine leaks during exercise, sneezing, coughing, laughing, or running. •Sleep: Around midlife, some women start having trouble getting a good night’s sleep. Maybe you can’t fall asleep easily, or you wake too early. •Sex: You may find that your feelings about sex are changing. You could be less interested. Or, you could feel freer and sexier after menopause. •Mood swings: Though the reasons for this are not clear yet, but you might find yourself more moody or irritable around the time of menopause. Other Issues •Osteoporosis: Estrogen helps control bone loss, and losing estrogen around the time of menopause causes women to lose more bone than is replaced. In time, bones can become weak and break easily. This condition is called osteoporosis. Talk to your doctor to see if you should have a bone density test to find out if you are at risk. Your doctor can also suggest ways to prevent or treat osteoporosis. •Heart disease: After menopause, women are more likely to have heart disease. Changes in estrogen levels may be part of the cause. As you age, you may gain weight and develop other problems, like high blood pressure. These could put you at greater risk for heart disease. Talk to your health care provider to find out what you should do to protect your heart."

Effexor XR and its side effects? I might consider taking Effexor for my depression and anxiety problems. I have heard that Effexor is less likely to cause sexual side effects in men as compared to the other Anti-Depressants. Is this fact true? Any guys on here who have been taking Effexor, let me know your opinions. Thanks.

gizmo replied: "hey ive been on effexor for six months and it has changed my life. it cured my anxiety and depression, and i did have a decreased sex drive but it only lasted for a couple weeks the it came back so dont worry effexor is a great medication, the only hard part is withdrawls but your doctor will tapper you off so you wont get bad withdrwals. you will be fine bro just stay positive k."

lst replied: "I found the sexual side effects slightly worse with Effexor than the previous one i tried (Zoloft). I stopped Effexor in August. Withdrawal was absolute hell. Read up on withdrawal before starting it, Effexor is one of the worst. That experience alone will keep me from ever trying it again."

JH replied: "Take St. John's Wort and you will not have ANY side effects and it works!"

Dave replied: "Im currently taking 275mg of Effexor daily for my depression and anxiety. At first it started to work for me my anxiety was gone but than after I say about a year it stopped working for me and it has made my anxiety even worse. Im waiting till Nov 12 to see a new therapist to give me something different and give me therapy. I have been waiting for about 5 months cause there is such a long waiting list here in Canada. If I never fought with them to rush me, who knows how longer I would of had to wait to get help."

Maria G replied: "Side effects that you should report to your doctor or health care professional as soon as possible: * allergic reactions like skin rash, itching or hives, swelling of the face, lips, or tongue * breathing problems * changes in vision * hallucination, loss of contact with reality * seizures * suicidal thoughts or other mood changes * trouble passing urine or change in the amount of urine * unusual bleeding or bruising Side effects that usually do not require medical attention (report to your doctor or health care professional if they continue or are bothersome): * change in sex drive or performance * constipation * increased sweating * loss of appetite * nausea * tremors * weight loss This list may not describe all possible side effects."

Effexor XR and Zoloft withdrawal? I have been on a daily combination of 150mg of Zoloft and 250mg of Effexor XR for major depression for about 5 years now. I recently missed 2 days of dosage and became almost non functional and had tremors, nausea, confusion and dizziness. The first day I seemed fine, but by morning two I felt very ill. Supposedly these drugs have no withdrawal symptoms. However, this is not the first time this has happened to me, it has happened at least 2 times before. Is my body going through withdrawal? Is this the result of the Zoloft or the Effexor XR or both medications? Is it the dosage and the amount of time that I have been on the drugs that causes this odd reaction? Finally, is it dangerous?

Simon W replied: "Zoloft is easy to come off, Effexor can cause severe withdrawal symptoms so you need to reduce your dose slowly over a few months. there is allways a chance that your depression may come back."

Tara J replied: "You are experiencing withdrawal from both medications. The higher dosages and very long time of taking the drugs merely intensifies the withdrawal. Both Effexor and Zoloft cause withdrawal when stopped abruptly with Effexor withdrawal being more common and more severe. I'm unsure where you read that these drugs do not cause withdrawal, but that information is very wrong. Perhaps you confused it with them not being addictive, which means people do not get the impulse to take larger or more frequent doses. Withdrawal symptoms from antidepressants are not necessarily physically harmful, but withdrawal should be avoided whenever possible. Some withdrawal symptoms can last for months. You could develop severe depression or anxiety as a result which is harmful emotionally. Hope this helps. I'm very unsure why you have missed 2 days of medication, but you should resume your regimine as soon as possible. Also, the combination of Effexor XR with Zoloft is very unusual. Most are prescribed one or the other but not both, with Effexor usually being more effective for the majority of people."

Ahorn replied: "I would recommend you to watch following DVD that is available online if you have fast internet. It's told by psychiatrists, psychologists and people who worked for pharmaceutical companies. It informs you - beside other things - about side effects that are not often being told by psychiatrists. It also suggests an alternative in the end. When you then make a decision to take antidepressants, you may be better prepared, educated and understand what's going on when you encounter some bad side effects. I would say that these information are actually vital. The link sounds a little scary - that’s because many antidepressants have suicidal thoughts and impulses as side effects which you can also read inside the pack of some antidepressants. Watch trailer 1:55 min The whole DVD Fox News about pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly (Prozac and others) 3:36 min"

Should I switch from Effexor XR to Lamictal? I've been taking Effexor XR for anxiety and depression for 10 years. I also take something to help me sleep. I have been depressed (not severely like before I took meds) and my Dr thinks Lamictal might help without the side effects of Effexor. I'm scared b/c it's a different kind of drug than I've ever taken. He thinks I may be "bi-polar II" which doesn't include mania but depression, anxiety, irritability, and racing thoughts. Changing meds is terrifying for me because it's always very hard and disruptful. On the other hand, if I could be feeling better than I am without the side effects, that would be worth it. He's had a lot of luck with Lamictal. My biggest fear is it causing insomnia since I already have a problem with it. Should I try it?

Meg! replied: "I would definietly try Lamictal. I have been on both and Lamictal is the much better of the two."

Jeff replied: "Take St. Johns Wort! It's natural and it has worked for me. NO SIDE EFFECTS! That other stuff will mess you up!"

Blanca replied: "Your doctor suggested Lamictal because he thinks that the benefits outweigh the side effects. So you can talk to him if you're concerned and maybe he can find another medicine that you're more comfortable with, if not maybe he can prescribe some sleep medication to take with lamictal. You should never be nervous about being honest with your doctor and asking as many questions as you need."

Blackcompe replied: "Bipolar II does include mania, hypomania, to be specific. It's mania without the psychosis. Anyway, Lamictal is the new gold standard for bipolar disease, but it really depends on what works best for you. It's a "clean" drug, having no side effects what so ever. There are several bipolar subtypes, which may require different medications. I am a rapid-cycling mixed state manic depressive, and thus far, I've only found relief with Efexor. I went on Lamictal and felt nothing, nor did my behavior change. Since each drug has different mechanisms of actions I'd say that it's quite risky to change treatments. Efexor is an SNRI and Lamictal is an anti-convulsant. Perhaps you could ask your psychiatrist about a combination of Wellbutin and a SSRI. That combination should emulate an SNRI with less of the nasty side effects. Good luck."

Nick replied: "First a word of advice. Provide a little more detail about this "something to help me sleep"? ...here's my Lamictal story revised b/c it was a novel... I have been taking various medications for epilepsy. When I was 25 I took Depakote without any side effects or complaints about the effectiveness. No seizures and driving is not a problem. Since I had been on Depakote for 2 years my neurologist said it may stop working like I have personally experienced with other medications. He said Lamictal may be something to consider because of its limited side effects and the fact that your neurological system is finished developing around 25 yrs of age. I was slowly starting to take Lamictal as I eased off the Depakote. Eventually when I was taking 100 mg of Lamictal twice daily I started having bad side effects (not the severe rash). The dosage was lowered to 50 mg, my Depakote prescription was changed to Depakote ER and it seemed to be fine together. I noticed nearly a year ago that I really have just been tired for some reason. I go to see my physician and I am given a sleep study. After being diagnosed with mild sleep apnea I'm put on a cpap device. That thing does not really help me. When I went to see my neurologist a couple weeks ago I complained about the drowsiness. He changed the Lamictal to Lamictal XR. Lamictal XR works fine for me now. I would prefer to be on one medication but I am still stuck with Depakote ER & Lamictal XR. Costs me twice as much with 2 Rx... another $500 a year :( It might work without a problem for you but it is no golden ticket. Lamictal has not been in use as long as a lot of drugs."

canada_winnipeg_man replied: "Same here. I’ve been taking Effexor XR for anxiety and depression since 2000,before I was on Zoloft. I am taking Clonazepam as a sleeping aid before I go to bed and works fine. I am tapering to take Effexor XR, and I have flue-like symptoms, I am spending lots of time in bed. On Monday I will start taking Wellbutrin XR and I am wondering too what is coming next. Lamictal is anti-epileptic medications used treat seizures in adults and children over 2 years old. Your doctor has been prescribed Lamictal to decrease the Effexor withdrawal feelings, you will be fine! take some sleep aids! I am not a doctor and I hope it is okay to post a reply here. Follow treatments as directed by your own physician. Take care as always!"

I have been on effexor XR since I was 18-What to expect? Im 22 years old and have been taking effexor xr 37.5mg since I was 18. I began taking it because I was suffering from panic attcks and had some depression. I was in my past year of high school and going thru A LOT. I abused alcohol and truly believe all of this caused the depression and panic attacks to begin. Before 18 I was never really depressed but always had a bit of anxiety, not debilitating just something I thought was normal as I'd had it since I could remember. I'm now 22 and going off the effexor xr (with the help of my doctor)... I'm on my fifth day effexor free and wondered what to expect? I feel much much more emotional-on the antidepressants I didn't EVER cry even in appropriate situations-it's almost like I was numb. So I almost feel like I don't know anymore when it's appropriate to cry or when it's a bit overboard. The range of emotions I've felt over the past couple days has really surprised me- I'm trying to be optimistic about living without the effexor although I a bit scared? I will go back on if need be- but would really like to live without it.... How long will it take my body to get past these discontinuation symptoms? Are my range of emotions normal??-really scares me to feel my emotions again! What are the chances my brain chemicals will be able to compensate without the effexor? Also I'm taking a few supplements including omega-3s, and theanine.... Thanks so much!

Ali replied: "I feel your pain. I had been on effexor (37.5-150mg) for over 7 years (I'm 23 now). I got off of it last fall for good and it was a nightmare. I've take a few drugs that have really bad withdrawal effects, but effexor is the worst. The best bet is to find something to curb the side effects until you're body is free of the med and not craving it anymore. This could be another non-addictive anxiety med for short term, or a combination of herbs and exercise/relaxation techniques. Gaba and passion flower are good starting points to research. I take both since I stopped regularly taking medication and they've helped alot. Since you were on the lowest dose, you'll probably get off with few symptoms, aside from being able to "feel" again. As good as that sounds, it is ridiculously scary at first and you'll have to learn to channel that energy. Deep breaths and you'll get through it. I would try to find something else instead of going back on, simply because you'll have to do this again at some point, and the withdrawal simply isn't worth it. Or it'll stop working in a few more years, as it tends to with everyone. Good luck and stay safe"
