what are the affects of combining the drug Amitriptyline and Escitaloram together.? I desperately need to know if the combination of amitriptyline and escitaloprame can cause another to lose control, become aggressive and confused. What are affects and side affects of these drugs individually and combined together.

thedrisin replied: "For individual side effects, google the drugs and look them up. You can also look up the drugs on WebMd or another medication website. Make sure you spell them correctly - it's escitalopram. For effects of them together, you should ask your doctor - preferably a psychiatrist who has experience prescribing these drugs. Or, ask your pharmacist - they might not know the answer, but can tell you where to look. You can also go to scientific websites like or. To be honest, you may not get the info you are looking for from these studies. They can be confusing and I don't know how many studies have specifically researched the combination you are asking for. But do the research, and you might come up with something. Good luck. Sorry if this wasn't as helpful as you hoped."

catherine m replied: "The best thing to do is call the drug store where your scripts are from and ask...if they don't help call this #1-866-797-0000 - it's the # for the Telehealth hotline....just make sure you call someone - even if it's the closest hospital because you never know whether there might be side affects or adverse reactions and if you are by yourself who can help? Good luck and don't take any chances......C.M."

Has anyone taken the drug Amitriptyline. What reactions (if any) did you have? My Dr. has prescribed Amitriptyline 10 mg tablets for migraine prevention. Supposed to take one or two a few hours before bed. I have probably 3 migraines a week, and they last anywhere from 24 to 72 hours, stopping me from enjoying things I like to do. It makes me very depressed and fed up. Don't know how much longer I can stand them. Have tried most migraine medications with no luck.

Amps replied: "I was on it for a month to help my constant headaches.I had to come off it because I was totally out of it, made me very depressed and fed up. I would also stare at things very strange. Now on my 3rd drug and that makes me drunken like, headaches are horrible."

Kumar (Superstars Fan) replied: "J.B. Common side effect for Amitriptyline are: •Dizziness or lightheadedness •Drowsiness •Confusion •Constipation •Difficulty urinating •Dry mouth •Hair loss •Weight gain or weight loss •Erectile dysfunction (ED or impotence) or changes in libido •Changes in blood sugar levels •Increased sweating. Withdrawing Amitriptyline side effects: •Nausea •Headache •Irritability •Restlessness •Sleep problems. You better check your eye sight, that might cause migranes. If glasses are recommended better use it. Analyze your migraine, when it starts? why it starts? It could be food related too. Research what you did prior to getting migraine and see if that pattern continues. Accupunture can also help!"

AnimalFilter replied: "Amitriptyline is an older class of antidepressant known as tricyclitics. They aren't really used for depression anymore since newer drugs (Prozac, Celexa, Paxil, Zoloft - all SSRI's) are so much better. In the simplest terms, Amitrityline increases the level of certain brain chemicals such as serotonin, dopamine, and norepinepherin. The theory for migraines is that people who suffer from chronic migraines have deficiencies of one (or all) of these chemicals. So, the migraine is actually a side effect of a low level of brain chemical. It's certainly worth a try! The side effects can't be worse than chronic migraines. The most common side effect is drowsiness, though 10mg is a fairly low dose so you probably won't have any side effects at all. The majority of side effects also last for about two weeks and then go away, so doctors will generally tell you to tough it out because it gets a little worse before it starts getting better. As far as safety goes, Amitryptiline has been around for decades and is well studied and has an excellent safety record. I wouldn't worry about safety - 10mg is harmless except for potentially annoying side effects... Good luck!"

Countess replied: "I was on amitriptyline for quite sometime and it really worked quite well for me.It seems to dull your nerves so your pain tolerance is better the down side is sex really sucked couldn't feel much sensation throughout my body."

Jen Jen replied: "The main side effects I suffer with are a dry mouth, muscle spasms and a rapid heartbeat but I'm on 200mg a day. On that low a dose, you shouldn't have many side effects that can otherwise affect you negatively. I am currently trying to ween myself off them and lowering my intake by 50mg every two weeks and am so far *fingers crossed* coping with it. The best thing really would be to just try the medication and see how you get on. If you find it doesn't work for you then you should be ok to stop taking it without suffering from any withdrawals. If it does work, then least you've found something that does! Good luck!"

My doctor has recommended a drug as an alternative to Amitriptyline? but I can't for the life of me remember the name of it. I take amitriptyline for pain in the nerves (not as an anti-depressant) so it's a very low dose (25mg) but makes me really drowsy. I think the alternative she suggested begins with a G. Anyone have any ideas what it might be?

psycho bob replied: "You're thinking of Gabapentin which was originally used for epilepsy"

harleydevil_08 replied: "I take a drug for nerve pain. It's called Neurontin. It is an anti-convulsant. It works well for norapathy (nerve pain). It don't work as well as opiates, but it's not addictive. I take it because of my bike wrecks. Ask your doc about it."

Has anyone ever been on Amitriptyline, gained weight & was able to lose the weight while still on the drug? I have gained 30 pounds in the last year while being on the drug and now feel helpless to lose weight if I'm still taking Amitriptyline. I take 100mg, but started on 50mg and the weight still crept on, regardless of the doseage. Help!

Paramedic girl replied: "Water retension is one of the side effects to this drug."

Will amitriptyline and /or gabapentin show up as poss for opiates in drug test? Will amitriptyline and/or gabapentin show up pos for opiates in urine?

Mathieu replied: "No they should not. Neither gabapentin or amitriptyline are opiates. If there would be some false positive then you would need to tell them your medications for them to see if it could result in a false positive. But I would not worry about it."

yarbigy replied: "they shouldn't. I've never seen them do so."

Utkarsh Singh replied: "nope"

Amitriptyline - anti depressant drug prescribed for Fibromyalgia. Advice needed please.? I've just been prescribed Amitriptyline for my Fibromyalgia - I'm really hoping it will work! Has anyone had experiences of this drug? I'd love to hear what your experiences are of it; side effects, effectiveness etc. Many thanks in advance.

francol replied: "I had these when I was first diagnosed with FMS but I found they did no good at all so I stopped taking them - I just take painkillers when things get bad and also get plenty of rest - have managed like this for nine years - good luck, hope it works for you. ~x~"

jamand replied: "Yeah! Ami is a good drug - it is used primarily as a muscle relaxant and as an anti depressant drug - so for your condition (assuming that you have muscle pain etc) - it is a good drug to take - BUT, you have to give it a chance - it can take many days to kick in, so to speak. Side effects are rare but include drowsiness, sweating, dry mouth, blurred vision (rare) and on occasions dizziness. Rare reactions include - palpitations of the heart and difficulty urinating - these are RARE. Any side effects you should talk about with your GP just to put your mind at rest. It is a good drug to aid in muscle problems and to assist in relaxation - I know - was on it for two years. BUT - like most drugs - what suits one person may not suit another - you may have to try it for a couple of weeks and if you feel no effects - you may have to change to something else"

old_woman_84 replied: "I have not taken this drug. I have taken Nortriptyline and love it--but the side effects of it is constipation so take it rarely. I did notice that one should not cold turkey off of the drug--gradually decrease the dosage. Here is a site telling about it--but I know experience is the best teacher. lol "

bodmodangel replied: "I took the drug for about a year b/c I have CRPS. I gained alot of weight on the drug (about 25 lbs). I was very dizzy and groggy the entire time I took it. It will dry your mouth out very badly. I was put on it by my ortho and my pain doctor said that no one goes on it anymore. There are just much more effective drugs out there without all the side effects. It did help a little with the pain, but not nearly enough to make it worth while with all the side effects."

Christine R replied: "Hi welcome to the club. I've had Fibromyalgia for 11yrs and yes amitryptaline does help, the only side effect I had was a dry mouth. The medication will help you regain your sleep pattern. By getting a restful nights sleep will help the pain and you will generally feel better over time. Fibromyalgia comes with a lot of other things, such as memory loss(fibrofog) but check the fibromyalgia web site it tells you loads. Apply for Disability Living Allowance from the DSS. It's difficult to get but persevere, appeal if its refused. Also enlist the help of your MP,I did and after 9 years of trying I got the allowance."

wolflady replied: "Hi Rebbecca wolf lady here. I have been prescribed amitriptyline for Fibromyalgia. I am now on 50mcg. They are okay for a while, but I keep having to have mine upped every so often, because I guess my body gets used to them. They do work for a while, but I have trouble getting up in the mornings, so I hope you are not a morning person. lol. Christine R has decribed after effects to a tee. I think it would be good to form a fibromyalgia group, coz I don't know about you guys, but I find that people find it hard to understand, if they don't have it. I also tried for DVLA, but they too don't recognize Fibromyalgia for what it is. Good to know I am not alone with this stupid syndrome. By the way if you have not already, you can claim incapacity benefits."

Anyone heard of amitriptyline? It is generic for Elavil. Anyone have any side effects from this drug? I took at bedtime, and 18 hours later, I am extrememly exhausted. Is this normal, being the first dose I have been on? I have no energy at all. I am on thismedicine for chronic sinus problems. Will this side effect go away after a bit?? I would appreciate anyone who has been on this for their input...Thanks!

frank replied: "I took it and slept for days, see if doc can try celexa"

Lisa A replied: "You don't mention the dose, but check with your health care provider and see if it can be lowered. This is normal, if you don't want the dose lowered you could take it earlier in the evening. Don't attempt to cut it in half unless it is scored... has a line down the middle. If there is no line the medication is not evenly distributed through out and is not evenly placed in the pill. Side effects are possible for any medication even Tylenol.. the more you are exposed to a medication the more likely you are to have a side effect. The biggest side effects with generic Elavil are sleepiness, dry mouth, dry eyes, inability to empty bladder ( urinary retention) a person should always use sun screen with this drug. The side effect of sleepiness should resolve in a few weeks, becareful driving and operating heavy equipment"

Because a side effect is stated here, it does not mean that all people using this medicine will experience that or any side effect. * Dry mouth * Drowsiness * Blurred vision * Constipation * Nausea * Difficulty in passing urine * Drop in blood pressure when going from lying or sitting to sitting or standing, causing dizziness and lightheadedness (postural hypotension) * Sweating * Involuntary muscle movements such as tremors or twitching * Rashes * Confusion or delirium * Headache * Sexual problems * Changes in behaviour * Increased appetite and weight gain * Taste disturbances * Low blood pressure (hypotension) * Disturbances in the normal numbers of blood cells in the blood * Abnormal heart beats * Faster than normal heart beat (tachycardia) * Convulsions (fits)"

Will amitriptyline show up on a D.O.T. drug test? I have been taking amitriptyline for about four months now to prevent migraines and I want to become a truck driver however I am told that the drug i take disqualifies me during the time of the Department of Transportation physical if im still taking it...so my first question is, is it detectable and second if it is how long does it take to get out of your system? i've tried looking for this info on the web and i even called a drug testing facility and couldnt get a strait answer. its a tricyclic antidepressant drug thats about all the info i can find any info would be greatly apreciated. thanks.

roxya153 replied: "I'm pretty sure you won't pass if you have more than your prescription dosage in your body. If you just take it as you're supposed to, it probably won't be a problem, just make sure you tell them."

Does anyone know ANYTHING about the drug ELAVIL (aka. amitriptyline)? My doctor gave me this medication. Its to help me sleep, since I have bad back pain at night, but I heard its to treat depression as well. Is this an addictive medication? and like vicidin, do people ever sell it on the streets? basically I'm asking how "high" can it get you?

Wolf replied: "I wouldn't try it for the purpose of getting high. My neighbor's brother was on a high dose of that medication for depression and Killed himself three weeks after he started the pills."

Other Ellevell(amitriptyline) users? Are these normal drug side effects?? Ellevell(i dont know if i spelled it right) is an anti-depressant. I don't use it for that reason though; it's for my severe headache and migrane problem. My neurologist kept prescribing me medicines; and this one is finally one that is helping!!! There is a god awful problem though. It's not what happens when I'm on the medicine; it is what happens after it fades away! Whenever i accidentally skip a day or if I dont take it at the same exact time i did the last day; i get very upset!!! I get sad over nothing and start crying for no reason!!! Once, i got so upset, i cut myself for no reason at all when i accidentally skipped it. When i took it and was my normal self again i was all "What the hell did i do that for??" Are these normal side effects because it is an antidepressant??

crested_crush replied: "yeah, without it you are depressed so you do those things. PLZ answer mine!"
