Dosage Of Anafranil in Questions
Are there Serious Side Effects of Anafranil Medication? I suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Severe Depression, Anxiety and Insomnia and was taking 400mg Seroquel (nocte), 20mg Lexapro (morning), 30mg Avanza (nocte) and 5mg Valium (PRN). I was recently admitted to a private psychiatric hospital in Sydney due to worsening of my condition, and was immediately taken of all my existing psychological medication which was replaced wwith Anafranil 25mg daily, which was increased over a two week period to 150mgs daily. I constantly reported to my Psychiatrist that I was feeling no better and in fact felt that my conditions were worsening and all he could say was that I had to gie it time for the Anafranil to work and would increase the dosage. In the days that followed, I became increasingly depressed, anxious, irritable, regular suicidal thoughts and aggitated. I ended up signing myself out as I was not happy with the way I was being cared for and stopped the Anafranil. The following week, my condition worsened and I became very agro.

kiikart replied: "Being taken off all of your pre-existing medication was probably not the best idea in the first place. That's a very dangerous situation to put you in. I don't know any wise doctor that wouldn't taper their patient off of the medication. I understand that you were/are in a critical state, however, the initial withdrawal and side-effects from stopping and starting the new medication (respectively) can be in some cases, life threatening. I would be primarily concerned with that fact before even focusing on the actual Anafranil. Your body is probably still left with traces of the cocktail of drugs that you were taking before, depending on how recent all of this was and it's all a bix mix of substances. I urge you to seek care/supervision of a reputable and knowledgeable (oh and understanding & patient) psychiatrist ASAP to get things sorted. Emotionally and physically, you must just be exhausted and aching. Get well soon!"

Vicki C replied: "I'm reading the current "Australian Medicines Guide (7th Ed" by Dr Jonathon Upfal ($12.95 at the Book Basement). It is extremely dangerous to STOP all meds and just "replace" them with Anafranil - according to the guide, their effects will only manifest 4 weeks after initial increasing treatment. More Serious side effects include "sudden switch of mood", marked confusion, nightmares and epileptic fits or seizures. Your psych (and mine) liked tricyclics but they really don't work for everyone. Seroquel should be stopped over a 2 week period in reducing doses or psychotic episodes may occur. Avanza is another tricyclic - can't figure why he got rid of that for anafranil. Lexapro is an SSRI (none of these are MAOI drugs that you've mentioned). I used to be on Lexapro but found it made me "emotionless". Its an antidepressant. 20mg is the highest dose available clinically. They intensify suicidal thinking and depression paradoxically. They likewise should not be stopped abruptly as withdrawal effects of dizziness, anxiety, nausea, insomnia, shock like pins & needles etc. may occur. The guide suggests these drugs may need too be withdrawn very slowly as relapse is likely. Get yourself a copy of this guide. Or let me know and I'll get you it."

I'm on 250mg of Anafranil and want to get off of it, what is the best way to do this? Should I gradually reduce dosage or go cold turkey?

steel9maiden replied: "Don't do anything without medical advice is what I would say. Gradual is the best way. But TALK TO YOUR DOCTOR. I see they're depression meds. Are they not working? Shouldn't you change them if they're not working, or if the side-effects are too extreme?"

Suzz replied: "Don't go cold turkey whatever you do. You should reduce the dose gradually, but before you do that, consult your doctor. He/she will tell you how often and by how much to reduce the dose."

William B replied: "Speak to your doctor and look at this: How should I take Anafranil (clomipramine)? Take this medication exactly as it was prescribed for you. Do not take the medication in larger amounts, or take it for longer than recommended by your doctor. Your doctor may occasionally change your dose to make sure you get the best results from this medication. Follow the directions on your prescription label. Take clomipramine with food to reduce stomach upset. If you need to have any type of surgery, tell the surgeon ahead of time that you are taking clomipramine. You may need to stop using the medicine for a short time. Do not stop using clomipramine without first talking to your doctor. You may need to use less and less before you stop the medication completely. It may take up to 4 weeks of using this medicine before your symptoms improve. For best results, keep using the medication as directed. Talk with your doctor if your symptoms do not improve after 4 weeks of treatment. Store clomipramine at room temperature away from moisture and heat."

nina-h replied: "I've just been increased from 150 mg to 175 mg and have never felt better. Why do you want to stop taking it? Is it the side effects or is it not working for you anymore? I would definitely talk to your doctor first. There was a reason you were put on it and stopping it on your own may not be a good idea. Good luck!"
