Has anyone had success with combing Prozac with Wellbutrin for treatment of depression? I'm wondering if combining the two would help with the fatique and lethargy that accompanies major depression. The Prozac (fluoxetine) is a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor (SSRI), while Wellbutrin (bupropion) acts on dopamine and norepinephrine. I was hoping for some feedback from anyone who has taken this combination, as I intend to discuss this option wit my MD. What do you all think? Any comments, experiences, and opinions would be very much appreciated.

ghost replied: "They are not meant to be combined. And all anti-depressants are unhealthy."

man or woman? replied: "No, Prozac made me got crazy, a state that included my depression, but was worse than depression because I had energy, so much that I was accused of taking amphetamines."

hazeleyedbeauty1967 replied: "Are you trying to kill yourself? I hope not. DO NOT MIX ANY ANTIDEPRESSANTS. Talk to your doctor. Prozac is pretty powerful on its own. Wellbutrin is mild but does the job by itself as well. Do not have a doctor put you on Paxil, it will give you suicidal tendencies."

JB81 replied: "Anti-depressants are not meant to be combined. One thing that might help is combining an anti-depressant with an anti-anxiety medication, depending on your symptoms. Sometimes these medications can have side effects (like fatigue) but should go away after a few weeks of taking the normal dose. Also, if you have or have ever had an eating disorder do not take Wellbutrin. It can cause seizures. On a side note, do not listen to people who say that anti-depressants are bad for you or don't work. They help many people. I have also heard people say negative things about Prozac. Prozac affects everyone differently. Where it might make one person "crazy" it can really help another person."

Do depression or prozac have anything to do with nightmares? I've had diagnosed depression for a little over a year now (undiagnosed for several.). However, I've also been consistently on prozac for the past few months-no side effects. I've missed a few days recently, but I'm back on it. This past week I've been having horribly vivid nightmares, which is really unusual for me. I usually have one nightmare a month but I've been having them straight for about five days now. Is this caused by my prozac or depression? /:

SUTHHERN REDD replied: "I have depression as well but I don't have nightmares.............. I have taken Prozac in the past as well. I would say that it's a side effect of being on and off the med and it will pass....IF it doesnt then definately contact your doctor BUT if it is really bothering you then contact them now...... I do have a girlfriend that has is taking Prozac and she was at 40mg and when they increased her to 60mg she is now talking in her sleep and her husband says she is literally carrying on conversations...lol...it's been a side effect for her with the increase --- so in all honesty I would say it's the med's change not the depression but once you are back on a regular schedule you will be ok.... - Hope this helps..."

magdarra replied: "It can be. I took Prozac for many years not for depression but to treat cataplexy which is muscle weakness associated with narcolepsy. I was having the very vivid dreams increasing; because of that and nervousness I switched to Lexapro which is not as good for the cataplexy but relieves the dreaming and the anxiety."

Rusty replied: "My experience after being prescribed Prozac was nightly, vivid, in color nightmares. They were horrendous. My doctor said it was one of the side effects of Prozac and put me on a different antidepressant. That was just my experience, that might not be the cause of your nightmares. You should see or call your doctor and tell him about the nightmares if they continue."

Which medication is better on depression prozac or effexor XR. I currently taking both and I feel one is more I have heard efferox is a beeter drug and prozac has so many side affects. I don't think I should be taking both.

InTheDark replied: "A doctor would be insane to prescribe both medications! Stop taking the prozac! You'll mess yourself up taking both, even if they are different meds, you're gonna end up a pile of crap that no doctor can help."

appleeater395 replied: "im taking prozac and so far have no side affects, and your right you shouldnt be taking both, worse things that would happen is a tummy ache or a headach well the pharmacy guy told me that, and so far i have neither."

Randall replied: "These medicines are more powerful than cocaine and will have the same dramatic negative effects over time .... they are no solution. Don't be deceived by them. They are aging you real fast."

Alicia R replied: "no u should not take both just in case one contrasts with the other it might be bad and in my opinion Prozac is better"

MomSezNo replied: "You need to talk with the prescribing doctor about this issue. Be sure you understand why you are taking the two medications. Tell the doctor what side effects you are having. It's not a good idea to adjust your meds without a doctor's supervision."

Jennifer S replied: "Did your doctor prescribe you both or are you just playing pharmacist? Consult a doctor about this combo if you haven't already. Both of these drugs increase serotonin production in your body and too much serotonin can cause you to go into a coma. Be careful!"

Any experience with prozac and depression? I am suffering from depression and a friend recommended prozac. Anyone have any experience with this drug? Did it help you?

Hove Andrew replied: "I didn't get on with Prozac so went onto Sertraline which is great"

mytwodogs60463 replied: "My dad was on that for years but it really helped him over some of the other medicictions he tried."

Poopy replied: "It saved my life after my first baby was born. It doesn't make you feel high or anything - just....capable of handling things, some how. I didn't have any side effects, either - it was truly a godsend. After a while, I went off it, but then suffered another depressive episode several eyars later and when I tried it the second time, it didn't work as well. I have been told that is fairly common, too - that once you have taken it for awhile, you build up sort of a tolerance that doesn't go away even if you stop taking it and then start again. So, I switched to Zoloft (also very effective). Both of them are SSRI's - selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors. Serotonin is the "feel good" brain chemical, and by inhibiting your body's ability to reabsorb the amount of serotonin your body naturally produces, you have more of it floating around in your system. More serotonin = feeling better. Since prozac is one of the SSRI's that have been out on the market the longest, it is probably one of the safest and cheapest - it is available in generic form. Hope this makes sense/is helpful."

im on prozac for depression do I need a seperate medication for my anxiety? I've only been taking Prozac for 5 days now and have been experiencing alot of anxiety and have had 2 painc attacks 2day-proper ones. So i was wondering if after the medicine has started to work properly this will go away or will i have to take something seperate for my anxiety???- Im hoping i wont. Serious answers from people who suffer from anxiety and dipression please.

looneybin90 replied: "I take Paxil for both and it works well for me. It usually takes 4-6 weeks for anti-depressants to work as well as they are going to. Hang in there- if you are still having these issues in a couple months I would suggest talking to your doctor to see if a different med might be better for you."

N L replied: "Only your doctor can answer that question. Medications that might work one way on one person might have a different effect on someone else. Please talk to your doctor about this."

jamgerky replied: "most people do need a separate nerve pill..like attavan,Valium,klonopin,Librium,xanax.........class of benzodiexapine...these drugs together will help you a great deal..you get hooked on benzos but not antidepressants...GOOD LUCK"

GILKA replied: "Did you suffer from anxiety and panic attacks before starting on the Prozac or is this something new which has started since? Have you had a good read through the leaflet that comes with the tablets to check for side effects? If you are still concerned you should contact your Doctor again asap, if it were me, in the meantime, I would carry on still taking the Prozac you have been prescribed as stopping these abruptly might make things worse. Good luck and hope you feel better soon, depression is a horrible thing and try to take comfort in the fact that you are not going through this on your own, and that you will get better with the right help and medication. x x x"

Mahadelic replied: "Increased anxiety is a common side effect when starting an SSRI antidepressant such as Prozac. This seems a little extreme though. I would go back to your doctor for further advice, possibly to switch to an alternative medication. I really don't think that you need an anti-anxiety med right now- best not to complicate the situation, and possibly leave you dependant on another drug."

fozzed replied: "i would never take prozac as one of its side affects is Anxiety and agitation and insomnia,it also contains fluoxetine, and also if you have had suicidal thoughts it realy should be taken with caution, but like most anti depressants it will take up to four or five weeks to get into ur system.id go back to the docs and have a good talk to him about the right medication, here in the uk doctors are looking at the clock and trying to push you out the door,i was asked to go into my doctors a couple of days ago,and i end up telling him what medication im on.and then he suprises me cos i certainly diddnt know or was never told that i have c.o.p.d. smokers lung.so i must have bin tested but never given the result cos they are so busy making money."

DooD49 replied: "Hi Sarah Prozac (Fluoxetine) is an antidepressant that has an 'alerting' effect, rather than a 'sedating' effect - and as such, it can cause increased anxiety and agitation - particularly when first taken. Adding a powerful 'anxiolitic' such as Diazepam will certainly make you feel better in the short term - but the cost of this is the high risk of dependence. If you really cannot tolerate the anxiety (which may not last too long) you should visit the prescribing doctor and ask his/her advice. Some doctors may prescribe a Beta-Blocker (such as Propanolol) to help with the physical effects of anxiety - this being a much better option than Diazepam-like drugs in some clinician's opinions. I cannot predict whether your doctor would agree to this - but it is worth enquiring. Here is an NHS page to explain the use of Beta-Blockers in anxiety. "

should i start anti depression my dr prescribed me prozac is it safe?and? m 38 weeks pregnant i want to breast feed my baby and what if i couldn't stop taking the medicine ?+ does prozac makes u sleepy?or any side effects?cuz i was avoiding the anti depression but i think i need it cuz i have mood swings and i dont see any interest in anything i kno m going through a lot it can happen to any one who is going through the same situation.thanks for answering everyone.

Betty M replied: "Congrats on having a baby. Did your doctor tell you it was safe to take prozac during pregnancy and if so look it up again on the computer regarding side affects, just to be safe? You are to close to giving birth to take the risk now. Most women go through many different emotions while pregnant and hopefully this is all it may be. Prozac put me into a deeper depression but everyone is different. If you have to take these meds then make sure you have the safest one on the market for you and for your baby. Hope everything works out well for all of you and always listen to your intuitive self."

gringomcnight replied: "i don't want to discourage with PROZAC, i take that medication before but it i feel more depress due to side effects, until i found VILIFT it's all naturals and it really helps me a lot."

Ali replied: "Its not recommended to breastfeed while taking SSRI's (thats the family of meds that Prozac is in) because it can be passed on to the baby in the breastmilk. But if you think you're depression is bad enough that you need the meds, then take them. Breastfeeding is great but its not worth avoiding taking the meds if you're just gonna be miserable without taking it."

Jacki T replied: "I took an antidepressant while carrying my first baby. Even though baby did not need the medicine (which it will get if your taking it) I was in serious need of it I would scream and cry when my husband would leave the house(I tried to keep it hidden from him) I was a nutcase. The med did help though it created problems of its own. (reduces sexual desire) which put a strain on the relationship. This was 10 yrs ago. I survived,my 9 yr old has no evident health problems from me taking it and my husband was very great through it all. HOWEVER I do suggest that you make an appt. to talk to some kind of therapist. Medicine by itself is not the answer. You have to take control of your own feelings and attitude, a therapist can help ,at least buy a book on dealing with depression if therapy is not an option. Get yourself better, PLEASE, baby is depending on you!! Oh ps I have breastfed all three of mine, you can take antidepressants while breastfeeding just make sure the Dr. knows about it. He might want to start you out with the lowest dosing."

hachimachi replied: "I started Zoloft during my 13th week of pregnancy because my anxiety got so bad I wasn't sleeping at all and was constantly having panic attacks. Sure, I would much rather not be on meds during pregnancy, but I have to say I am very happy with my decision. I was told by all doctors involved that you can breastfeed on it, and it was recommended I stay on because I am at a big risk for postpartum depression. If meds have helped you in the past, then certainly think about going on them. There are lots of people who disagree with taking meds during pregnancy and breastfeeding, but also you have to consider your mental state and how unhealthy that is and how it is affecting your pregnancy and/or ability to care for your new baby. I believe that untreated severe anxiety was worse for my baby than the zoloft is, which is why I went on. Good luck to you!"

How does Prozac help to get rid of depression? I've been taking prozac for a very long time, and I still get depressed. I've only noticed a few changes in my mood, but if I had to rate this medication, i would give it a 5. I don't know exactly how it works to make patients like me get rid of depression.

v8rocks2003 replied: "I don't reckon that Prozac (Fluoxetine) is a "cure all" for depression ? This may be the misunderstanding. Its just a tool to help with the treatment of depression, sure but there are other things that can help contribute towards your wellbeing. You can't always rely that a drug alone to be the cure for your depression, in my opinion (but that doesn't mean that it has no use). Its a drug that can help with making your mood more stablised and has wide application. How it actually works: there is a drug in the brain that works with mood, called Serotonin. Very simply, its keeping you up with the "happy" chemicals in your brain so you don't feel sad ! But...if the reason for your depression has not been challenged, its just like doping yourself ? Without getting a true answer for why you are depressed if you get me? To solve this requires further complimentary assistance. Such as councilling, psychotherapy etc. (Or you can also help yourself with other complimentary stuff ) I just think its easier for people to rely and look for a solution in drugs but it oversimplifies and makes you reliant when really it has to be challenged why you feel this way ? Also different drugs work better for different people. You should NEVER stop using the drugs without advisement because you will be chemically addicted and it would have an adverse reaction to change. You have to go through your GP to discuss it. I would keep an open mind and look at all solutions to COMPLIMENT with a solution to your depression.e.g. check out linden method"

twothousandyesterdays replied: "Prozac is an SSRI medication, meaning it workes to increase seratonin, a hormone in the brain that regultes mood. People with depression are often low in seratonin. If Prozac isn't working for you anymore, there are many other SSRIs your psychiatrist can try. I recommend making an appointment with your doctor to talk about this; sometimes a medication can work great for a while, then drop off. I also recommend seeing a therapist. Many studies have been done indicating the combination of medication and therapy is much more affective in allviating symptoms of depression and other mental illnesses more so than medication alone. Good Luck!"

GDP replied: "Prozac is supposed to help correct a serotonin deficiency in your brain to improve your mood. If you've been taking it for a long time at one dose, it might need to be increased, or you might need to try another medication. However, Prozac is not a "happy pill". You have to make lifestyle changes in conjunction with taking it, like getting rid of whatever is making you depressed, or getting counseling. But you can try other medications, such as Lexapro, Wellbutrin, or other medications to see if they will have a better effect."

Does anyone else take Zyprexa and Prozac for Biploar Depression? I'm currently taking Zyprexa and Prozac for Bipolar Depression. I take the Zyprexa at night because it makes me so sleepy. However I still cannot get out of bed in the mornings. I'm so tired and tired of being tired. I feel that because I feel so exhausted it's making my depression worse. I just want to call into work and lay in bed all day. I don't want to talk to anyone else at all. Does anyone else have these problems?

Tawna replied: "Hi..How long have you been taking the Zyprexa and the Prozac? I'm not on Prozac but I do take Zyprexa at night as well as Klonopin 3 times a day as needed for Bipolar. When I first started on the Zyprexa it would knock me out. Mornings were really hard for me also. I have been taking it for 1 1/2 years now and my body has adjusted to the side effects. It still makes me a little sleepy at night unless I'm already real tired then it makes me just fall out. Prozac can make you drowsy also until your body adjusts to it. My best advice is to just hang in there and give your body time to adjust to the medicine. If after 6 weeks to 8 weeks the side effects haven't lightened up any then I would suggest talking with your doctor about it."

Cristina S replied: "yes"
