Coumadin Effects From Side Posts in Q&A
Coumadin & side effects? Does anyone know of the side effects of coumadin? I'm on it for DVT blood clots that were found resulting from using the NuvaRIng about three weeks ago? I'm wanting to know more about the medicine and my condition. Can anyone help me?

N replied: "The main side effect of coumadin is bleeding. This is why you need to have your blood tested to make sure the level is correct so you are not prone to excess bleeding. Here is more info on the drug, next time ask your doctor about your prescriptions, he/she is the best person to ask:"

Experience with Coumadin and its side effects!? I am on coumadin for a DVT in my left leg. Its been a month and a half that I have been on the meds. I have some pains and concerns sometimes and Im not sure if they are something to worry about or not. It is nothing intolerable.. just annoying. When I was diagnosed with the blood clot I was so shocked that I had one bc the pain wasnt HORRIBLE. Im just wondering if anyone has experienced side effects from coumadin and to what extent. I know what they are. I have read all about it, but I want to hear from a real person who has experienced problems with it or what it feels like to have a clot in your lungs and what not. I will ask my doctor as well.... I know how everyone on here always says just to ask the doctor!

David S replied: "Yes, it has many side effects and yes it is also used as rat poison. However, if you need coumadin, it's because you already went past the point of no return for good health. Do not stop taking it or you will most likely suffer a stroke. If you are feeling effects from it, unfortunately you'll probably have to deal with them for the rest of your life, but let your doctor know anyway because they are the only ones that can help you do anything about it."

KittyKat replied: "My grandmother took it but it was for hardening of the arteries, not for a BC. She had to go to the doctor every 6 weeks for blood tests to make sure everything was within certain limits and she bruised really, really easy so she wore long sleeves alot because of the bruises on her arms from cleaning around the house. One time she accidentally hit her leg with a stool and it took quite a while to get that to heal so be careful of hurting yourself. If you do, don't put it off like she did, get to the doctor right away so they can treat you immediately and help it heal quicker. Good luck"

alanrjamrjar replied: "coumadin can cause weakness when first started and also nausea, but unless told by your doctor don't stop taking it. that will only make things worse. I was on it for nearly two years, for about the first six months i felt like death wasn't far off but after that I felt fine. you also need to avoid things with vitamin k."

what can people taking coumadin eat without any side effects? My father just started taking the medication....he received a list of "What he can't eat" what I need is a list of "What he can eat"....so that it will easier for me to cook for him...

Mr. Peachy® replied: "Glad you asked. I researched this recently for a friend. Go to and under "tools" select "nutrient search tool". Then fill in the highest in (potassium, for example) and lowest in "vitamin K", and then select the food category you're interested in... probably vegetables since they're the ones that you're mainly concerned with. The search will net you all the foods that are low in vitamin K (the clotting agent), and high in the desired nutrients. You can select several parameters. Here's a tip... the less you cook his vegetables, the better they will be for him. I've posted links to a lot of valuable information on my diabetes info page linked under my profile. Here's one you might find interesting: Always remember this, you can learn more about this stuff than so called experts in just a matter of weeks. All you have to do is keep your mind open to this simple fact... Our bodies are optimized for the foods we evolved down through the ages consuming. Or, if you're a creationist, our bodies were optimized for the foods that Mother Nature provides for us."

marie a replied: "The only thing my husband was told to avoid is a lot of green leafy vegetables other wise he wasn't limited as all. We eat meat, fruit, pasta, rice, potatoes and fish. But now his coagulation lady say the doctors would rather their patients to eat green leafy vegetables that are good for you and have his coumadin adjusted to his readings."

I was just put on Coumadin . Any side effect effects I should spefically know about. I am 42.? I had a clot that was in my left leg that appeared just out of no where. They did Vascular emergency surgery to get rid of it and I had a Vena Cava Filter inserted. I was put on Coumadin and told it would be a lifetime medication for me. **Just wanting to know from fellow Coumadin takers how you are doing - blood scored - mine was 2.6 the Monday after I left the hospital on Thursday prior.... Thanks =)

Jeremy replied: "When you take Warfarin. The major complication is bleeding. You will bruise easily and it will take longer to stop bleeding. You should not drink alcohol when on warfarin and asa may cause ulcers. The blood score (INR) just tells the doctor if you are on the appropriate amount of warfarin. You should be in the range of between 2.0 - 3.0"

More side effects of coumadin.......? I am looking for the after effects after taking coumadin....anyone with info please anser, will be very helpful.

ems.junkie replied: "The main side-effects are hemorrhage and other bleeding issues. In some cases, skin necrosis can occur, and then there are the typical ones (nausea, headache, diarrhea, jaundice, edema, rash, ambdominal pain, etc) You can look it up on which is a great site for finding indications, contraindications, and side-effects of meds."

Possible side effect of Coumadin? Are higher blood pressure (about 20 points) and/or lower heart rate possible side effects od Coumadin that anyone else knows about??? I know that LOWER blood pressure is possible. If not, could it be a drug interaction. My dad has atrial fibrillation and has been on Coumadin for a couple of weeks and both symptoms have appeared though they arent listed as side effects. Is there a way it could be the Coumadin anyway?

Tin S replied: "When you take warfarin, your blood won't clot as easily. If you accidentally cut yourself while taking warfarin, you may bleed heavily. You're more likely to have bleeding problems if you're older than 75 or take other medications that can further increase your bleeding risk. Notify your doctor right away if you experience any of these warfarin side effects: Severe bleeding Bleeding from the rectum or black stool Skin conditions such as hives, a rash or itching Swelling of the face, throat, mouth, legs, feet or hands Bruising that comes about without an injury you remember Chest pain or pressure Nausea or vomiting Fever or flu-like symptoms Joint or muscle aches Diarrhea Difficulty moving Numbness of tingling in any part of your body Painful erection lasting four hours or longer Other less serious warfarin side effects that you should tell your doctor about include: Gas Feeling cold Fatigue Pale skin Changes in the way foods taste Hair loss Although rare, warfarin can also cause skin tissue death (necrosis) and gangrene requiring amputation. This complication most often happens three to eight days after you start taking warfarin. If you notice any sores, changes in skin color or temperature, or severe pain on your skin, notify your doctor immediately. What precautions can you take against warfarin side effects? There are some key steps you can take to reduce your chance of developing warfarin side effects. These include: Tell your doctor about any other medications or supplements you take. Some medications and supplements can have a dangerous interaction with warfarin. Tell your health care provider you take warfarin before you have any medical or dental procedures. These procedures include vaccinations and routine dental cleanings. If you're going to have surgery, discuss what dosing changes might be necessary at least 10 days before the procedure. Your doctor may decrease your dose of warfarin or discontinue warfarin altogether before the procedure. Avoid situations that increase your risk of injury. Things to avoid include contact sports or activities that could result in head injury. Make sure you tell your doctor if you are unsteady while walking or have a history of falling. Consider wearing a bracelet or carrying a card that identifies that you take warfarin. This can be useful if emergency medical personnel need to know what medications you take. Consider a warfarin sensitivity test. About a third of the people who take warfarin are at a higher risk of bleeding because their genes make them more sensitive to warfarin. If you're worried that you might be more sensitive to warfarin because a family member experienced side effects, talk to your doctor about taking a warfarin sensitivity test. The test can tell if you have the genes that can increase your risk of bleeding. What drugs and supplements can interact with warfarin? Warfarin, like any other medication, can interact with foods, other drugs, vitamins or herbal supplements. Be ready to provide your doctor with a complete list of everything you're taking. Drugs that can interact with warfarin include: Aspirin or aspirin-containing products Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin, others) or naproxen (Aleve) Tylenol or acetaminophen-containing products, especially when the dose of acetaminophen exceeds 1,500 milligrams a day Many antibiotics Heparin Cold or allergy medicines Birth control pills Medications that treat abnormal heart rhythms, such as amiodarone"

John de Witt replied: "No, I bet he's on other medications as well."

BUTTERFLY replied: "All you need to do is find out every medication he is taking and then call any pharmacist. Any pharmacist would be able to tell you over the phone."

dcrc93 replied: "here are the side effects. It is a blood thinner not a blood preasure medication "

puppysyndrome replied: "Coumadin is a blood thinner and you could be prone to bruising depending on the dosage you're taking. It's really not good to drink alcohol with any prescription medication!"
