About Constipation Cymbalta in Q&A
I heard that cymbalta is good for back pain and ibs if this is true and what is the side effects? I have chronic back pain and ibs constipation, i heard that doctors are prescribing cymbalta before i go to the doctor i want to make sure of the side effects. i know that doctors wont tell you about it. cymbalt is a antidepresant but i have friends that they are taking cymbalta for back pain, ibs, migraine and other pain kind of pain. because it relaxes the muscles it helps with the pain also.

Jessi B replied: "I thought cymbalta was an antidepressant."

Ryan D replied: "Cymbalta can help chronic pain - not acute. It is an antidepressant, but using an antidepressant for pain is not a new idea - the old tricyclic antidepressants like elavil are often used for chronic pain and sleep disorders. I've not heard of it being used for IBS though.... that seems like a dr handing out an expensive placebo to me. So in short - Yes for chronic back pain (not temporary) no for IBS/Constipation... for that, I'd go with MiraLax. (It's over the counter in the US now.)"

cymbalta question? i have been on 60 mg of cymbalta for one week and suffering from severe constipation because of it. Since ive only taken it for a week, is there a need to stop it slowly? or can i stop all at once?...yes im going to dr next week but want to stop before that.

confused1 replied: "and talk to your dr.Do not go off your med. Take a stool softener"

JOJO replied: "I take Cymbalta though not as high a dose. I was told that it takes up to 3-6 weeks to build up in you system before the begining effects of taking the meds go away or reduce. Please check with your doctor FIRST Make sure that you tell them what other over the counter meds you are taking because those can cause that side effect as well. I took aleve & found that it caused my constipation. If you take something for the constipation, that might have an effect on how the cymbalta works. I usually call the local hospital's ask a nurse line & they generally direct you to whether you need to see the doctor right away. jojo"

meowzie replied: "It may not be the Cymbalta, there could be other reasons for the constipation. However if you are convinced that it is from the Cymbalta, call your doctor and have a plan on decreasing your dosage slowly. It is dangerous to suddenly stop a medication without a doctor's supervision. In the mean time, constipation can be treated using everything from fiber supplements, stool softeners, Miralax, drinking a lot of water and eating more foods with fiber. (prunes, vegetables, bran cereal, muffins, blueberries, pears, grapes, raisins, pineapple, apples, and other high fiber fruits and vegetables ) Avoid constipating foods like: cheese, pasta, corn, milk, foods containing a high amount of sugar, white rice, anything with caffeine. Good luck, I hope I have given you some ideas and help. Michelle"

Does Cymbalta or Xanax make you fat or ..? give you constipation preventing you to lose weight?? I take 60 mg Cymbalta,Xanax 0.5 three times aday but I am redusing the dosage from last week to half in the morning and half at night plus Tryptizol one tablet at night.Does the pills effect or I just have to help myself to move on after divorce?I just see my Daughter every week for 3 hours.I know the source of depression.

seneca replied: "i think most the meds they give us cause constipation, and laziness,,well i was lazy b4,,just worse now"

oldweirdhoss replied: "From what I've read about Xanax and side effects, it doesn't and shouldn't change your weight, but Cymbalta might. Antidepressants are notorious for causing weight gain in some people, even when they exercise and eat well. If it's a problem, talk to your doctor and maybe the prescription can be changed."

These are the side effects I stared the ones she had All are a side effect to the medication. hope this helps."

šğēł replied: "I took Lexapro it worked great for me! I had difficulty reaching orgasm for the first 2 weeks, I told my doctor about it and he told me allow time for my body to get used to the Lexapro, he was right. Lexapro is also fast acting, it works within 2 weeks, you will see a big change in your mood. I started on 10mg for 2 weeks then went to 20mg."

How does Cymbalta make you feel? I have been on Cymbalta 60 mg. for almost a year (Jan). I really like it a lot, aside the sexual side effects. It helps me handle stress so much better, and I feel like I can handle everyday life better. It has caused constipation, but it doesn't bother me so much, because I have ulcerative colitis and it's kind've nice to not have to run to the bathroom everytime I eat. One thing I have noticed though is, I occasionally have really weird thoughts running through my mind. It's like I envision weird things going on. I'll be standing up and it's like I imagine myself falling, or last night I was smoking a cig in our garage and was putting it out on the floor and I imagined a fire starting in my face. It's really weird, and it's gotta be the medication, because I never felt stuff like that before. Has anyone else experienced weird feelings like that? I have also started smoking since I started taking Cymbalta. Before I only smoked socially and now I smoke all the time. Please tell me what you think?

amanda c replied: "yes i took cymbalta for bout a year and i also had weird thoughts like one time in class i felt like yelling who believed in religion (even though im not religous) or sometimes just imaging the weirdest stuff lol..and if i missed a day i went nuts seriuosly i didnt act myself at all so i finally got off it and i dont take anything now its been a year and i do okay but i still like everyonce a week fall in a depressd state of mind for likean hour or so but with the smoking...weed na ivesmoked since middle school weed wont bother nothin"

lexi replied: "I've been taking it since July 4th along with klonipin (sp?) and it has given me my life back. I was agoraphobic, didn't drive and would panic at stupid stuff, like if I couldn't see the phone or if I stood up totally straight in the shower...it was out of hand. I had been on xanax and ssri's before but this combo gave me my life back. My thoughts are actually better controlled and my mind doesn't race like it used to ( I would lock the door if I was in the car because I truly believed I would jump out). I can drive by myself again. The sexual side effects are easing up as well, I wanted to cry in the beginning it took me so long to orgasm! The only negative things I have dealt with is weight loss (I was 114 lbs when I started the med and now I'm 97 lbs.....scary) and I'm noticing my hair is falling out....about 4 or 5 strands in the shower....so that is concerning. Ya, and I got the horribleconstipation, but I look at it as a good thing because it has made me start eating better! If Cymbalta is working for you like it is me then I truly hope the weird feelings go away.....def talk to your psych about it!"

Has anyone tried Remeron vs. Cymbalta or Effexor?? I tried Cymbalta recently, and it was great for both my depression and ADD, however I got insomnia and real bad constipation. I had to stop it soon... I was suggested Remeron, because it's supposed to be better for sleep... Anyone with sleep problems tried Remeron?? .... btw, I know about Weight Gain side effect of Remeron, but since I take 100mg of CoQ10 daily, that should not be a problem... At least it is not with Zoloft that i am taking now, and Zoloft is supposed to make u gain weight too. so I am not worried about that side effect. My concerns are insomnia and constipation side effects. Please share if u have tried Remeron . Thanks

gaston8291 replied: "I was prescribed Remeron for sleep and I remember taking one pill and sleeping for 16 hours straight and when I woke up all I could think about was going back to sleep, that was the last time I took that...."

xanax or cymbalta makes you fat?? coz one of these is effecting me to put on weight no matter how I watch my eating. This makes me more nervous than the issues in my life which had depressed me more.I have constipation too which I go crazy everyday about it.What do you think?? How can you help yourself if you were in my shoes?????

tallmochagirl replied: "You need to see the doctor who is prescribing these medications to you. This is not a Yahoo question as it affects your physical and mental heatlh."

sarasvah replied: "Cymbalta, i would guess. But, talk to your doctor(s)."

Alabama Girl replied: "In the first couple of weeks, Cymbalta can cause constipation and anxiety. It usually clears up. It does not cause weight gain. Cymbalta causes weight loss. Most other antidepressants cause weight gain."

Debra D replied: "It's the Cymbalta. Most antidepressants do that. Xanax is for anxiety and doesn't cause weight gain. See another doctor who will assess you for a bipolar disorder (depression and anxiety) and he/she can put you a mood stabilizer. Ask for one that won't cause weight gain."

Depression medication question.......I've been using this site quite a bit lately and I want to thank everyone who has helped me. You are truely saving my life. All answers are the "BEST ANSWERS". One more dirrect question. The physical symptoms of my depression are so bad, back aches, weakness etc. I wrote earlier about that commercial that talks about Cymbalta for the physical symptoms of depression. You know where the people are too tired to move etc. Has anyone had a good experience with Cymbalta who had these physical symptoms??? And they went away?? As I mentioned earlier I take 10mg of Lexapro, maybe it's not enough but It is a difficult medication to tolerate: constipation, headache etc. It took me so long to get up to 10mg and I've only been on 10 for about 10 days......so maybe it will take more time to work. I can hardly take it anymore the depression, sleeping all the time, don't want to go outside, stay in house...you know.... So just checking about Cymbalta to see if it really does relieve the physical symptoms of depression. physical check-up - excellent.???

animal lover from ozz replied: "My goodness! Physical symptoms of my depression are exactly the same as yours, when i'm in my 'down time' as I call it I cannot move from one spot for hours! Weakness, back ache, stomach pains, anxiety! I had no idea that there was something that could help. Is there a way I can contact you? I take Aropax (similar to zoloft) and Valpro."

John J replied: "I used to take Lexapro and I agree with you. It never made me feel ill but it took almost 2 weeks to get used to it...I stopped the meds and began walking and exercising...you'd be surprised as to how good you feel just from moving around...good luck!"

starynight39 replied: "I have been on cymbalta for about a month now. I really do like it. I was on lexapro for about a year and that was about 4 years ago. It did take a while to work. Give your lexapro about a month to feel its full effect. I did not like lexapro I ended up increasing my dosage. Next i was on zoloft for about two years. It did help for a long time but then after two years i was on the highest dosage and it made me gain 70 pounds in two years. For women its awful. It makes you gain weight. Sooo now Cymbalta....I had awful back pain. I thought it was from lifting my daughter all the time. But since i have begun my cymbalta my back has not hurt once. I do like it I would recommend it for anyone. I feel so much better on it. I feel like I actually have some energy. When I clean the house now I sweat. On my Zoloft I was always freezing. It would be 80 degrees out and I would be wearing a long sleeve shirt. Cymbalta works on two parts of the brain. It is awsome. You should try it. I truley believe it helped with my back."

Kara_Arkulari replied: "I'll tell you what I know... it doesn't answer your question directly, but I experience depression first hand and know that any information helps. I was on it briefly, but I acutally had more complications (side effects) on Cymbalta. I had an aquaintence who took Cymbalta for body aches, but she had more luck with Welbrutin. Initially, I switched to Cymbalta from Effexor XR. Effexor did help the depression and mild body aches, but I also have a lot of anxiety and didn't help me much there. Have you tried Effexor? Currently, I am taking 100mg of Zoloft. It is really working well. I exprience letheragy with SSRI's but Zoloft helps me with an increased energy level as well as the body aches. The bad thing about Zoloft is that it is really easy to build a tolerance to it, and as with most anti-depressants, coming off the medication is very difficult. Withdrawl is painful. But, there's no need to worry about that right now...first, conquer the depression... and it is possible. I promise! Are you in therapy. If not, I highly recommend it. A combo. of meds and psychotherapy is really how I've overcome 90% of the depression symptoms. Stay strong and try to hang in there with the ups and downs. There is a right medication for you and if you are persistent you will find it. E-mail me if you have any other questions or clarifications. Good Luck!"

ihcuids replied: "I used to be on lexapro, but now I'm on celexa. It works pretty well, except my hands shake so bad so times that writing becomes a challenge in and of itself. But I found this on rxlist.com: "Major Depressive Disorder It is generally agreed that acute episodes of major depression require several months or longer of sustained pharmacologic therapy. There is insufficient evidence available to answer the question of how long a patient should continue to be treated with Cymbalta. Patients should be periodically reassessed to determine the need for maintenance treatment and the appropriate dose for such treatment.""

bluesun replied: "u may need to go natural. try holisticonline.com for more info. meds may have bad side effects. well if u need a good friend who feels like you at times try me i am here"

Chosen by Grace replied: "I also was severely depressed and sometimes still am. I also lost all my friends when I was very young and when I went to a "center" instead of a high school I only made two friends, and neither was very good, although one of them was somewhat decent. I also lost them in a few years. These are the typical reasons for a person becoming depressed and turning to suicide: 1. Not getting your way. For example: A non-Christian being prevented by a Christian from getting something they want because that Christian is obeying God. For example say your friend has just become a Christian and you haven't and still hate God (whether you believe you do or not), and you want him to spend his excess money and watch some time-wasting movie with you but he won't because he's decided to spend his excess on spreading the gospel: You will become depressed at either the wrong idea that he hates you or angry that he is hating the things you love. Basically it's anger at God that leads to depression. 2. When a Christian sees others breaking God's laws, especially when they break the more important ones deliberately, and often. Scripture gives us some insight into one ancient Christian's emotional life, whose name was Lot: "he rescued Lot, a righteous man, who was distressed by the filthy lives of lawless men (for that righteous man, living among them day after day, was tormented in his righteous soul by the lawless deeds he saw and heard)" - 2 Peter 2:7-8 3. Others mistreating / being unloving to us. 4. False thinking such as thinking we can't do much to help anyone else in life or, after God has forgiven you, wrongly thinking that he hates you, and losing faith in his love for you. 5. Worshiping things other than God: "The sorrows of those will increase who run after other gods." - Psalm 16:4 You may not be worshiping "gods" however, if you are not worshiping God, or worshiping other men, metaphorically or literally, more than and especially, in hatred against him, then you will become more and more filled with sorrow. If you have not yet asked God to forgive you with sincere sorrow towards him for breaking his laws with the desire to stop breaking them, then according to Scripture you will not live forever with God nor will your mind become perfectly logical, but will remain in a tormented and chaotic state. To solve this problem you must not trust in any opinion over God's facts. For example if he said, "Do not lie" but in your opinion it's good to lie now and then, don't trust your opinion. Yes, it is good to lie in some cases for quick profit, but God will punish you for it, and if you are not forgiven yet, and you end up dying before you are forgiven, you will be punished forever for it. He who trusts in himself is a fool, but he who walks in wisdom is kept safe. - Proverbs 28:26 You should also not listen to those who are not forgiven for spiritual / moral wisdom: "He who walks with the wise grows wise, but a companion of fools suffers harm." - Proverbs 13:20 That is common sense advice as well. For example say you want help understanding a hard math problem, are you going to get the advice of a hateful impatient idiot who doesn't understand math? If a person truly wants to know and understand the God of the Bible in order to please rather than find fault with him, God will allow it and will let you know how to secure your future forever. In order to get eternal life and an ever-increasingly logical mind you must also humble yourself rather than arrogant and stubborn towards God: "whoever exalts himself will be humbled, and whoever humbles himself will be exalted." - Matthew 23:12 So, willingly, without hatred, do what God asks you to. Another problem may be your diet and comfort level. For example if you have high arches, the pain from walking around and not having good arch support may be causing you to be easily irritated. Or your sleep may be hindered by light coming in from under a door, a clock, a humming sound coming from a computer or clock, irritating bed sheets, or an uncomfortable pillow or bed. Also, if you are not getting enough saturated fat you may have poor health and feel miserable, and so again, will be easily angered. There is an excellent health guide at Finally: "don't worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more important than food, and the body more important than clothes? Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? ho of you by worrying can add a single hour to his life? And why do you worry about clothes? See how the lilies of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you, O you of little faith? So do not worry, saying, 'What shall we eat?' or 'What shall we drink?' or 'What shall we wear?' For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them. But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own." - Matthew 6:25-34 Read more of what God has to say at"

What is wrong with me sexually? Ok, I have no idea what is wrong with me. My problem is getting worse and worse. It seems like getting an erection is harder and harder to achieve and my sensitivity is decreasing tremendously. I have been seriously constipated for months which I can contribute to the methadone I am taking. I wonder if that is having an affect on my erections and sensitivity. If it is, it is getting worse over time. I was also on cymbalta, but the doctor told me if I were to quit the cymbalta, it would be easier to achieve an erection and the sensitivity would come back. However, it is still getting worse. I don't see how I can be on methadone for a while, then all of a sudden this happens. I just started taking adderall, but I don't think that has anything to do with it. The only thing I can think of, is that the constipation which has been lasting for months due to the methadone is causing adverse affects with my sex drive and erection. I bought some libido supplements, but they don't seem to help. Does anyone know what could be the problem?? Or what I can do or take to solve this problem? Thanks.

Barcode replied: "Go to AOL Search - type in - Methadone Side Effects - a page will pop up with a large number of websites for you to select. Many say methadone can cause erection problems. Also - check out Adderall. Studies show that out of two hundred most used medicines; as many as sixteen are likely to cause impotence. Among the most risky are drugs used for the treatment of high blood pressure, depression, insomnia, ulcers, tumors, plus a couple of medications used to combat allergy."

Lil' E. replied: "u need a chickenhead"

dr replied: "First of all get rid of constipation. For this purpose, drink at least 2 glass of water early in the morning just after getting out of the bed (even without having your teeth brushed). Drink water before your meals. Drink lots of juices and try to eat lots of vegetables and fruits. Food fibres in vegetables and fruits will help in motility of alementary canal and reduces the constipation. Second, there is an exercise which can help a lot in making your sexual organs stronger. Just stand with your knees bent a little bit. Now move your testicles and penis to and fro just like pendulum. Do this exercise for at least half an hour daily. This will allow great blood flow though your sex organs and will help in erection of penis during intercourse. Best of all is to ride the horse. Riding horse makes your sex organs strong."

Only the best replied: "Your problems is due to stress. Try exercise and a healthy diet. Take care,"

Papa Jim replied: "Jerk ya dills, broseph."

Greg replied: "You could try viagra but I will tell ya what, that stuff sucks. The side effects are terrible. Have you ever tried a sexual enhancer? I was in your situation, like I said, viagra was tried but it wasn't for me considering the side effects overwhelm the pleasures of it. I found this natural herbal enhancer and figured what the heck, if it's natural it must be great and plus it said no side effects. I tried it and after about two days of taking it I was just horny like a mad man. All the time, I have erections that want to stand straight up and the orgasms are to die for. The stuff was called vigrx plus and I saved on it at the time at hughs-reviews.com , You should check it out. I love the fact it's made from a researched blend of herbs that seem to do the trick for me atleast. Good luck and I hope this helps."

wellbutrin...not working?? I'm taking wellbutrin 150 mg a day.....I have slight decreased appetite, constipation, energy spurts off and on through out the day but almost always have to take a short nap because i'm so tired, social anxiety, mood swings, crazy itching from scalp to feet that has decreased as i've been taking the pill daily, i've been on it so far going on two weeks....and i'm wondering if maybe i : 1.need more time to allow it to work, 2. increase the dosage or 3.try something else. I feel like i'm energized in the morning and by the time the afternoon comes im so sleepy and i usually end up taking a nap because i'm so sleepy. I havent noticed any weight loss yet and part of the my depression stems from my weight because i used to be on cymbalta and it made me gain so much weight :(.....i just usually here that wellbutrin is supposed to keep you up at night and help you lose weight and my side effects are nothing like that... I'm not taking wellbutrin to lose weight i'm taking it because iam severely depressed....but the doctor gave it to me because it is one of the few anti depressants that help with weight loss...

Teacup Irish Doodlehound replied: "2 weeks is definitely not enough time to evaluate the full effect of a drug--more like 2 MONTHS. Not everyone will have the same side effects as another person on the same drug, so try not to compare yourself. Give it more time and if after a couple of months you're still not feeling better and/or the side effects are too much, talk to your doctor about altering the dosage or trying another drug--these types of medications aren't one-size-fits all...You may need to try a few to find the right one for you. I've been there. Good luck!"

ariesgrl replied: "A side effect of Wellbutrin is weight loss....so you can expect no appetite. Also...be wary. I was on Wellbutrin to help me quit smoking and when I increased the dose to 300mg from 150mg....I went crazy....literally. My husband took me to ER and it was insane!! Anti-depressants are not good for people who arent depressed...thats for sure. And I would not increase your dosage on your own accord. If you are depressed about your weight...go on a proper diet and excercise plan........dont look for pills to be the cure all for everything.......everyone is depressed about something. Wellbutrin is for people who are depressed due to the lack of norepinephrine and dopamine. It's not a diet pill."
