About Celexa And Headaches in Answers
Has anyone had severe headaches caused by Celexa? I was put on Celexa for anxiety and I have been taking it for 2 weeks now. The doctor put me on 20mgs,but it made me really nervous and anxious so I cut it to 10mgs, now I have been getting severe tension headaches that nothing will cure. Could this be caused from the Celexa?Has anyone else had this problem with this medicine? This is my first time of taking a antidepressant so I don't know if this is normal or not. Will the headaches get worse or will my body eventually adjust to the medicine and the headaches will stop? Any help is appreciated because the medicine is helping with the anxiety, but I don't know how long I can put up with the headaches!

Riko replied: "Celexa and other anti-depressants commonly causes headache and nausea when u start. in most people it goes away after sometime but it varies, some people have to stop due to side effects but most are fine- usually they'll try to keep you on the lowest effective dose. there is Cipralex it is similar to celexa with fewer side effects- just in case the headache does not go away but odds are it will."

javadic replied: "20% of people who take Celexa get headaches from it"

If Celexa gives me headaches will all SSRI give me headaches? Hi I was wondering if Celexa which is an SSRI antidepressant gives me headaches at 20 mg will other SSRI's like paxil and prozac give me the same side effects? Because I am taking it for my stomach and I feel it is making a difference and I would like to up the dosage. But I cant with out getting headaches so I was looking to switch to another SSRI so I can take a higher dosage and not get headaches.

blues breaker replied: "you're taking anti depressants for your stomach? strange. ask your doc about the headaches"

Rashiida S replied: "ssri's are a broad class of antidepressant, so just because one drug has side effect x, doesn't mean that others in the same category will also have side effect x. drymouth, jitters, weight gain, and sexual dysfunction are the most common side effects. switching may change the set of side effects that you experience. hope your stomach feels better."

For those taking Celexa(Citalopram), what do you use for headaches? I've been taking it almost one week and so far so good. Normally for a headache I take ibuprofen or naproxen(Aleve). However, it is not recommended to take anything with NSAID's along with Celexa. For those who use Celexa, what do you use for headaches? I don't believe it's a side effect. I've only had one, and I was sneezing at the same time, so I maybe caught a small cold.

whinie_p replied: "The reason they tell you not to take NSAIDs is due to the risk of bleeding. You can take tylenol for headaches with celexa."

celexa withdrawl...headaches,upset stomach, help!? I'm withdrawing off of celexa after having taken it for a few years,I have been weaning off it but the last few days I've had horrible headaches, upset stomach, brain zaps, etc. I have not been able to get off the couch, and feel like I have the flu or something.Any suggestions?Anything I can take to take the edge off? Thanks I`m coming off it because It killed my libido, caused weight gain, and I didn`t think it was working for me anymore.I`m taking wellbutrin now.I`ll see how that one goes! I have been going off with my doctors help, but he didnt say much about the kinds of side effects i'd be having or what to do about them.

leistos replied: "I'm taking it now (for several months).... and I think it's working great. May I ask why you are coming off it? I mean I'd like to know if there is something bad in the future waiting for me after taking it for a few years... Edit (after additional details): Wow, killed libido, weight gain. It's sort of done the opposite for me since I've taken it. I mean I exercise a lot and lift weights, lost around 30+lbs of fat, and I was average sized to begin with. But it hasn't killed my libido though, possibly made it stronger. I also take Klonopin though, maybe that has something to do with something? I'm sorry I don't have any tips for coming off of it, other than listening to your doctor. I should be thanking you though for the possible future tips though. Zoloft was a weight gainer for me, plus I could never get a good nights sleep (wake up every few minutes, it was terrible). Thanks though. These drugs certainly work on people differently."

pudn36 replied: "Do not go off without a professional weening you off. That is very dangerous!"

Can Celexa cause migraine headaches? My 15 year old daughter started getting severe migraines a couple weeks after starting the medication. I can't find that as a side effect.

sns1985 replied: "yes i was on celexa and i had really bad headaches i'm on zoloft right now for anxiety but have headaches still. but also can be her hormones to she's going through a lot of changes at that age."

any SSRIs that don't cause bad headaches? I am on generic celexa.. and my head is killing me. anything better? SSRI brand/prescription that does not cause bad headaches.. this citalopram is giving me the worse headache... will it stop.. or should i try another... i dont want to take one tommorow and have this bad headache again.. i work at a computer all day.. and cant handle this pain in my head... Any advice or better SSRI out there>?

TeriR replied: "It seems strange that SSRIs can actually cause headaches when they're often used to prevent frequent headaches. Unfortunately, since everyone's body is different, it's nearly impossible to predict whether any of them will cause you to have headaches until you try them. If you haven't been taking the celexa very long, you might give it a bit of time. Sometimes, the side effects stop after a week or two. I've taken both Paxil and Effexor XR with no problems. Good luck to you."

aali_and_harith replied: "A common side effect of many SSRIs is headache. Effexor did that to me. Have you tried Zoloft? What about Paxil? I've tried Cymbalta and that's pretty good - no generic for it just yet though."

mom*2 replied: "depending on how long you have been taking it, i been taking the same thing for 2 years now, headaches were real bad in the begining. I took tylenol, it worked, after about 2-3 weeks the headaches were gone. If you've been taking this for a while, and the headaches are that bad, call you doctor, maybe your dosage needs to be changed or the meds aren't agreeing with your body. good luck!"

ragtad replied: "Celexa was the first antidepression med that I every took and I hated every day of it. I stoped after about two months because of the side effects. I have been on many different meds for various amounts of time since then and had very different responses. Talk to your psyc. The best med that I have had so far is Wellbutrin. I have also taken effexor and lexapro with minimal problems."

I started taking Celexa three days ago and have had a headache ever since? it's not listed as a common side effect of the drug. Will it subside soon? Is it probably because of the Celexa? I'm also drowsy all the time and have been yawning a lot. When will that stop?

Angelux replied: "Go to the nearest pharmacist."

Scott B replied: "I got that also. I switched to Effexor XR and was fine."

Can Celexa make you feel disconnected or kind of like your drunk? I have been taking celexa for at least 6 months now and I was at 20 mg and I was having horrible headaches all the time and feeling really spacious or like I was drunk or disconnected. Pretty much like my sense arent as clear as they should be. And I got rid of the headaches by dropping down to 10 mg but I still feel that funny drunk feeling and I was wondering if its from the Celexa or if its from something else. And if it is from the Celexa do i really need to be on it.

tallywild replied: "Well if your doctor strongly recommends you for celexa I suppose your just gonna have to toughen it out but if you don't I would say change to something else ..I know it can be quite difficult but when I was on it I had headaches and sort of a drunk feeling too...what i did was just rest alot(I wasn't sleeping much at the time, so this may be your problem too), had alot of water and generally just tried to be healthier...these didn't cure it completely but I didn't feel as if things were as out of focus as much and for most of the times I didn't feel drunk at all but occasionally the drunk feelings would come back."

Do the Side Effects of Celexa go away with Time? I have just started taking Celexa for my anxiety. I have been experiencing diarrhea, nausea, and headaches. I tried this medicine because Paxil made me gain incredible weight. Will these side effects go away with time? How long is the adjustment period? These questions are mainly for people who have experienced these side effects while taking this medication. I have been taking the medication for two weeks. The side effects have only lasted a week or so.

VA replied: "Yes, they'll go away within a week or two. For me, they only lasted a week. If you're still experiencing them after two weeks, tell the doc who prescribed it for you and see what he says - it might just not be the right med for you. But I remember having some nasty digestive issues when I first started Celexa, and they cleared up after about a week."

Can taking yourself off an anti-depresant cause headaches? I recently (five days ago) stopped taking my anti-depresant celexa. After about the third day I got this really bad headache - it was a throbbing, movement sensitivity type headache - and I was wondering if the two could be related. Thanks.

hotbabe replied: "yes that can happen as antidepressants addictive you need to wean yourself off then its like your a drug addict if you just come off them hun u will get bad headaches and sometimes sum severebouts of depression"

KImberly F replied: "The answer to that is really simple, YES!!!! Anti-depressants are mostly narcotic based, and when u stop a med like that ur body goes through withdrwal symptoms. Thus the headache, probably was more like a migraine right? Depending on the medication it is best to slowly wean urself from it, that way less shock 2 ur brain. Hope this kinda helps... :-)"
