Very low iron levels. What can I do to up the amount of iron in my bloodstream? I am 27 weeks pregnant and I eat plenty of fruits and vegetables. My diet basically consists of a bowl of cheerios, two pieces of toast, and a glass of non-concentrated orange juice for breakfast, a sandwich for lunch and always a big dinner. I am not on any specific diet, I just eat when I am hungry and I don't eat a lot of junk food or drink much caffeine. Does anyone know any good ways to up the level of iron???

~*Lauren*~ replied: "I would make sure to take vitamins if you don't already. Talk to your doctor, and he may be able to tell you certain foods to eat to get higher levels of iron. Good luck!"

ibsawdust replied: "Kale and spinach have the most iron in them..You can eat them raw or cooked. Any green leaf vegetable is high in iron."

mlgable replied: "If your iron levels are low your doc with prescribe either an iron supplement or a mulitvitamin with iron in it. Talk to your doctor to find out what he/she wants you to do about this."

Patti C replied: "Go and see your OB right now... (s)he will be able to help you get a meal plan. You need a lot of calories in your 3rd trimester. Meanwhile, make sure you are eating meat, and iron-rich vegetables (mmm... spinach!). You may want to switch that bowl of cheerios with something that has more iron in it. Look at you entire diet, and make sure that you are getting everything you need to be eating. If you are not getting nutrients from your food, your body will sacrifice your own stores in favor of the baby."

ah_almonds replied: "Dispite the bad press involving red meat the iron is easily absorbed by the body and will raise iron levels. Also take a low iron supplementation with vitamin C."

justweird_sodeal replied: "One tablespoon of Blackstrap Molasses has as much iron in it as the over the counter iron pill and much easier for the body to process. It has a stong taste, but reminds me of coffee when mixed in milk and sweetened."

Rockford replied: "You should switch cereals. Kellogg's Bran Flakes with Raisins has more iron than a steak."

I am so tired all the time. I have had my blood tested, I don't have low iron? What can I do? ? Caffeine doesn't work, energy drink do nothing? I am thinking about taking a one a day women's vitamin...i get plenty of sleep I am just soooo tired??? What can I do?

lilkitkat replied: "can it be that your pregnant i know that women that are tired and way to sleepy sometimes are pregnant"

Kitty S replied: "I have had the same problem, and I think it's caused by too much sugar. When I can give it up for a few days, along with taking a walk in the morning and taking a multi vitamin, I start to feel much better. If I slip up and eat a bunch of sweets, I feel drained and sluggish and crave sugar all over again. It's a terrible cycle!!"

JJCK replied: "eat right. protein and the right amounts of calories and carbs are the biggest help for low energy. Vitamins probably couldn't hurt, but don't drink energy drinks...they probably do more damage than not. It could also be psychological"

daniellenicole replied: "SO....Caffeine drinks and energy drinks are crap for you no matter what the circumstances are. There may be a more serious underlying problem like depression your doctor has yet to discover. I was the same way a few months ago, I would go home after work and just sleep, my problem was I was being pure lazy when your mind and body get into lazy mode it's hard to get out. Go out and run or go to the gym or something, that's what I did and it gave me a lot more energy, I also changed my diet as well and cut out the junk. You would be surprised what a difference it makes. Maybe you need to regulate your sleep time. You may be getting too much sleep."

MDAsian91 replied: "Try exercising on a regular basis. Exercise always boosts energy levels. One possibility for the cause of your fatigue is sleep apnea. Although sleep apnea is more common in men, constant, daily fatigue is a common symptom. Sleep apnea is usually diagnose through a sleep study test. Good luck to you."

Ways to help retain iron? I am donating blood soon (not my first time) and I have had low iron a couple of times. I spoke to my doctor and he figured I wasn't getting much in my diet so he told me to take some iron supplements, which I did.. but then we found out that my body has trouble retaining any iron that is in my diet. I had tried eating many foods like chicken, fish, etc. to help on top of my supplements but it doesn't help much since my body can't retain much of it. Does anybody know of ways to help retain iron, not just get it from your diet? I know that vitamin C is supposed to help, and not to have caffeine with meals, but anyone know anything else? Thanks in advance.

Alexandra replied: "You need more B12. B12 helps you body absorb the iron. Try taking a B Complex vitamin along with the iron supplements."

Michael replied: "My mother has an Iron Deficiency and takes Vitamin B12 supplements to help retain iron this can be found in a multivitamin and in fact any animal-based food has Vitamin B12 -- clams and beef liver are especially rich sources. Other sources are chicken liver, beef, lamb, tuna, flounder, liverwurst, eggs, and dairy products."

best supplements for low energy levels? I have low energy levels and I'm trying to find a safe way to increase them. I'm taking 17 credits in college and also work, but half way through the day I'm exhausted. Some days I have class from 9- 7:30 pm and by the time i'm home, I don't feel like doing anything. I really want to work out and lose some weight but my lagging energy keeps me from doing so. [I do have somewhat low iron levels.] I'll have a cup of coffee on mornings I'm on the go early but I'm VERY sensitive to caffeine and it makes me jittery. What are some safe but effective supplements I can use for a boost of energy to keep me going so that I can work out in addition to my daily routine?

DGAME replied: "simple go on to a good supplements store online and ask for PHD battery its very good and tastes nice too.gives a good lift i had the same problem with caffine only i was getting heart palpitations soo i hada goo shop around and find this to be the best dont even have my mid afternoon nap nw lool"

reluctant A replied: "vitamin B6 and B12 might helps.. here, we take euricoma longifolia..."

How to prepare to donate blood? I really want to donate blood. Not only is it a great thing to do, but I have O neg and I know how much they need it. However, I'm on a doctor-ordered restricted diet (no caffeine, no chocolate, no dairy, low salt). That in itself shouldn't prevent me from donating, but I've been to the blood bank 3 times and my iron was too low each time! I've been eating iron rich foods and taking vitamins. Is there anything else I can do, or should I just give up at this point?

Gabriela replied: "Well if you've been eating iron-rich foods I would imagine that your iron level shoud be fine. I looked onlline and it said that oysters, clams, beef and chicken liver, iron-enriched cereals, beans, lentils, beef, turkey...stuff like that has great sourcs of iron. If your iron IS too low however, i would ask the nurses there for tips to make it go up for nxt time, Im sure they need your blood. I've donated many times, but my blood is very common so Im not that on-demand...so definetley dont give up."

I have low blood pressure and dizziness, how do I fix this problem? I went to my dr for advice and he told me to have half a no doze pill every morning. He said I have normal blood readings for sugar and iron. I don't really want to start having caffeine pills and I don't like tea and coffee. Is there another substitute I could use to stop my dizzy spells? Thanks :)

nerida2203 replied: "keep well hydrated and watch your salt intake"

textro@verizon.net replied: "This sounds simple, but you really should make sure you are eating enough and drinking enough water"

msnertroe replied: "The following thing are known to raise blood pressure. Exercise Increased fluids A higher sodium diet Caffiene OTC medications that contain decongestants Gaining some weight All of these however should be bassed on the advice of the dr. You should be glad that his recomendation is toonly add some caffiene. You could be on a prescription medication that raises your blood pressure (desmopressin) and would cost a lot more. Listen to the dr. and see if it helps at all. IF you don't find it convienent or working then talk to the dr again. But I think then best thing, from what i have learned, is what the dr recomended."

the only way I can stay awake throughout the day is by caffeine? 2 small bottles of coke a day---23 mg each so 46 mg of caffeine per day total. I cannot live my whole next 10 weeks falling asleep all the time or feeling too tired and slow to function nI will never get anything done...I am currently 30 weeks pregnant and the past week or two I have been unable to stay awake or feel very tired and unmotivated. Other people say it's lazy but I know it's NOT. I do have slightly lower than normal iron levels right now but ym Ob said it's okay bc theyre "almost normal" and to take ym prenatals. I do but they dont help me stay awake. I eat food it doesnt help me. So the only way I can stay awake and feel "normal" and not like a zombie is by drinking those 2 small bottles of coke with 23 mg each 46 mg total of caffeine. But I know caffeine isnt really good for the baby and nor is soda so it's 2 evils in one but is it really THAT bad if it's helping me function like a normal human? the thing is, I do nap but the exhaustion doesnt go away. to the dorky avatar guy with the squares as his name: I am assuming youre a guy so I dont think you quite grasp that pregnancy fatigue is much worse than normal regular fatigue. so *uck off. I didnt say I was "special" I just am cocnerned over how my needing caffeine and drinking caffeine could affect my pregnancy. I hate guys that come to the pregnancy section and try to act liek they know everything.

Jessica replied: "if you are that tired, shouldn't you be sleeping more or napping? It seems like that is what your body is trying to tell you."

TotalRecipeHound replied: "Actually, they proved that if you stop drinking caffeinated drinks for 1 week, you are cleared of the caffeine and just as awake as if you never drank any. Unfortunately, I have to admit that is true (I stopped drinking coffee for a year due to an illness). However, 46 mg total of caffeine is pretty much nothing. There are only concerns over 300 mg."

sweetienat123 replied: "It is recommended that pregnant women limit caffeine consumption, and should use it in moderation. It's best to stay under 200 mg, unless your doctor has advised a lower amount than that. You should be just fine with 46 mg/day, but it wouldn't hurt to ask your doctor about it for confirmation. Take care!"

밑바닥 헌납자 replied: "So, why do you think you are special from everyone else? That's the only way any of us can stay awake during the day. Yo, Soon2bMo..., If you see dorky squares for my avatar, than you are using a pirated operating system. Microsoft operatives have been dispatched to your IP address. Anyways, you should appreciate my presence here. I know more about KUAB than anyone out there. What makes you think I'm a guy, anyways? I did not whip anything out....yet. So take a Starbucks and call me in the morning."

BaByMaMa replied: "i drank pop a lot when i was preggo, but i drank caffeine free... maybe its the sugar rush you need not the caffeine"

Meggiez1 replied: "2 caffeinated sodas per day will not hurt you, but your body is telling you to rest more. Exhaustion is a common symptom in the 3rd trimester, and is your bodys way of telling you to slow down."

dueAug142008 replied: "I have to have my caffeine to stay awake during the day too! I don't think it's REALLY that bad to have our caffeine but I know it's not the BEST thing for the baby."

Jill C replied: "Hey! You're making your own person! That's a lot of work. But I have to agree with Jessica. Your body is working hard, and your iron is deficient, you probably need good food and rest. You might consider switching to coffee or some other kind of caffeinated beverage, like green tea.- I believe soda can leach the minerals from you, minerals like iron. I know, I like the bubbles and sugar, too. Do it for the kid!"

Danielle S replied: "I am not sure how much caffine is okay during the third trimester, but i don't think that little amount will be harmful, ask your .doc. You are not being lazy stupid people saying that to you, your preg and the third trimester you can be just as tired if not more than the first trimester because now its not just hormones, but all that weight of the baby."

momfirst101 replied: "Are you taking prenatal vitamins? They made me sick, but my girlfriends swore by them!! At GNC you can buy a sublingual vitamin B-12 blast, which is fine as long as you are getting all your other vitamins, too, as they support the increased wakefulness which will not harm your baby. Your body will void any extra vitamins through your urine that your body doesn't need. On the other hand, I kind of agree with the responder who said that it is your body telling you to get more rest. Make sure when you do sleep, that you try to do it on your left side as much as possible. I forget why, I think it has to do with blood flow and nutrient exchange to your baby. I had a very difficult pregnancy, both times. i had to be fed via IV, until my veins collapsed. Then, I got kidney stones at 7 months during 1st pregnancy, which were stuck so I had to have a stent placed in my ureter. 10 months after his birth, I was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, and my doctors advised me not to have any more children. We did our best to avoid it, but I got pregnant again 4 years later, and the same hyperemesis started, IV feedings which collapsed my veins again, and this time I got pancreatitis. I was tired a lot, and very uncomfortable. Try to limit what you feel needs to get done BY YOU before the birth. Many people come out of the woodwork to try and help when you are pregnant. Just let them. The best thing you can do is take care of yourself, as that is what takes care of your growing person. I wish you the best. Did I even answer about the caffeine? Sorry to ramble on so much, you are barely indulging in any caffeine consumption at all. Have no worries."

I seem to feel lethargic and slothish causing depression, vitamins maybe? I'm on gabapintin and take a multi vitamin daily. I just don't seem to have any get up and go. My low energy levels are causing me to be depressed because I don't get as much done during the day as I would like to. I have watched myself and taken notes on my eating, sleeping, and emotional patterns and it is not depression causing lethargy it is lack of energy causing depression. Do not want to do the high caffeine or high vitamin energy drinks are pills. Any good vitamins or foods out there that will help me get going. Lots of fruits and veggies in my diet and they help but don't seem to be enough. Doctor says maybe low iron even though blood tests say my iron is fine. Got any ideals?

Aejyfije replied: "You should check this out this program that I use. It works fast for me and I lost 10 pounds in 2 weeks. You can find more information from link below."

Do I have insomnia? For the past month or so I lay in bed for hours before I can fall asleep. Usually when I know I have to sleep because I have a lot to do the next day. It is almost every day even when I am completely exhausted. Is this anxiety related insomnia? If I go to the doctor will he just give me a pill (I don't want a pill)? I've cut caffeine, I don't lay in bed when I'm not tired, I don't watch tv before I go to bed...I just want to sleep! I am also anemic and I heard low iron can also be related to insomnia?

Fidel P replied: "try NyQuil its good, the liquid one"

kevanbd replied: "Anxiety and excessive worry can certainly cause insomnia. Anemia usually causes fatigue, not insomnia. It sounds to me like worrying about what you have to do the next day is what's causing your insomnia. There are some over the counter medications which may help but there are also some simple things you can do if you do not want to take medications. Try making a list of everything that you have to do instead of focusing on it in your mind. Write it all down and prioritize it. Don't overwhelm yourself. Set goals for yourself. If you don't get everything done, it isn't the end of the world. Tell yourself that about half an hour before bedtime, your brain is like a clean slate, and try not to allow yourself to focus on anything about the next day. If this doesn't help or if it continues to interfere with your daily functioning I would suggest a visit to your physician who can reccomend treatment options that suit your needs."

beagle0759 replied: "This site has some helpful information relating to insomnia and your circadian rhythms Your problem may well be stress related - you have insomnia you can't sleep , you worry about not being able to sleep and this keeps you awake. The cycle needs to be broken before it leads to depression."

Medicine Woman replied: "It sounds like your anxiety over not being able to sleep is keeping you keyed up and awake. Try a natural remedy called Melatonin (it can be found in most herbal stores and the body makes it naturally so it's not addictive) NyQuil is a cold remedy, why would you want to take that when your only problem is insomnia? It would be helpful to play some soft music (I play soft classical music but they have relaxation CD's to buy) between the melatonin and the music you should drift right off to sleep. The low iron will keep you exhausted so I don't think it is keeping you awake. Try to do something relaxing before bed. Happy dreams."

tomorjerry replied: "Insomnia is often caused by fear, stress, anxiety, medications, herbs, caffeine, depression or sometimes for no apparent reason. Make sure your bedroom is quiet and dark. Soak a tablespoon of mint leaves in a cup of water for an hour, drink every night. Check out for more info"

Nightstar replied: "What's changed these past months? Has your workload increased or are you taking on more responsibility at work? It's normal to worry about work and to feel anxious to go to sleep so you can at least face the day with energy. Often we put too much pressure on ourselves to sleep. This can only perpetuate the condition It's simply impossible to will yourself to sleep. Try changing your bedtime ritual. Empty your thoughts, avoid thinking about work. Have a hot bath to relax and wind down in the evenings. Exercise in the day is great for relieving stress and anxiety. It also helps promote deep sleep. When in bed, focus on relaxing your body from head to toe. For more practical tips and advice visit"

Am I Bipolar? If so what type do I have? My question is – do you think I am Bipolar, and if so which sort do I probably have? Bipolar I, Bipolar II, Cyclothymic Disorder, or “Bipolar Not Otherwise Specified”? Both myself and my partner strongly suspect I have Bipolar Disorder, and I don’t say that lightly as a “trendy” thing, we do know something about it from witnessing it in people we’ve known plus one of my friends is a Psychiatric Nurse. I’ve had both Depression and Anxiety since I was 15 (I’m 42 now), and been treated with various anti-depressants on and off for most of that period, both SSRIs and the old Tetracycline types. I stopped taking Anti-Depressants a few years ago because it didn’t feel like they were working any more and they were taking away my motivation to do things and making me sleepy. I’ve also had intense counselling over that period and “sorted things out”, but have come to the conclusion my moods aren’t necessarily caused by the past, it’s just they way I am, and understanding the past hasn’t stopped my moods occurring. In more recent times, say the last 5 years, I have developed other symptoms too, I’m aware of the existence of different types of Bipolar Disorder, mainly Bipolar I and Bipolar II but whatever is wrong with me doesn’t fit either of those exactly. I sometimes have “Pure” Depression, sometimes Hypomania (a less severe form of Mania) – happy, positive mood, extrovert, enthusiastic, a bit loud, chatty about lots of different things & sociable. Plus sometimes I have “Agitated Depression” where I’m very down but restless and irritable and unable to think straight or get much done, or sometimes a “Mixed state”, where I’m both depressed and anxious but also (and I’m a bit embarrassed by this) constantly wanting to have sex or feeling I “need something,”and being busy doing lots of things. I tend to get a bit obsessed at times and also have difficulty keeping things in perspective and over-react with hysterical crying when upset. I DON’T go on wild spending sprees or get grandiose or rant in the street, so I don’t think I have Bipolar I. My moods aren’t as extreme as they are in some people, but they do change rapidly, sometimes every few hours, sometimes every few days. I periodically suffer from bouts of Insomnia where I have difficulty getting to sleep or I keep waking up. I take herbal sleeping tablets when I get like this and they work quite well. It’s important for me to sleep well, because if I get sleep deprived I tend to have low-grade hallucinations ( feeling of being touched or something brushing past me, also hearing incoherent but quiet chatter of voices/whispers or sounds, plus seeing bright colours as I breathe in and out). I’m aware that these experiences are “not real” when they are happening; I never lose contact with reality. If I get very upset and worked up I do sometimes tend to feel a bit paranoid, I deal with this by going to rest in my room on my own with as little stimulation as possible; I usually feel better a couple of hours later. I used to have to stop watching certain programmes on the TV because they were a trigger for it, but I’m a lot better now. The “Paranoia” I get now only happens occasionally and is mild; it may or may not be your “Classical” Paranoia but it is still the worse feeling in the world. A couple of years ago I was very bad (Postnatal Depression after the birth of my child). The delivery and aftercare was traumatic so I also had flashbacks (a very, very unpleasant experience). The doctor prescribed me an SSRI (which I did use to take years ago), but this time they made me restless so I stopped taking them. He then prescribed me Prozac but this caused a really bad anxiety attack, the worst one I have ever had, so I never took it again. My moods are not as extreme as they used to be but they still trouble me. I tend to feel worse if my iron levels get low so I take iron tablets (prescribed by doctor). I’ve cut out virtually all caffeine (only have one cup of regular tea a day first thing in morning), and only drink small amounts of alcohol when going out, and I think this helps. The situation now is that I have just left things as they are. My doctor has never mentioned the word “Bipolar” but to be honest I think GPs don’t have enough training in that field, they are more familiar with your classic Depression or people who “get a bit anxious”. I have never been referred to a Psychiatrist, I could push for this but don’t feel like doing it, talking too much about it makes me feel worse and I get an idea in my head that I won’t be believed anyway. My partner is concerned about me but I’ve promised him if I get worse I will go back to the GP and try to get something done. I’m mainly coping with it, I look after myself and my family just fine and everyone has what they need, my partner is sympathetic and supportive, but I wish I wasn’t like this!

Vampire replied: "Possibly, but the only person who can tell you for definite is your doctor. Whether you have it or not you need advice from him/her."

40inApril replied: "You are really having a bad time at the moment. I can relate to most of your symptoms, but for your own sake and the sake of your family, I would strongly advise making an appointment with a Psychiatrist through your GP. When I was diagnosed as Bipolar it came as such a relief, as I had spent years wondering why I behaved the way I did. Frustration gradually disappeared and reasoning stepped it. Was great, and so much better that my old existence. I still have the odd episode, but nothing to be bothered about. There are loads of sites dedicated to explaining BP and the 3 different types, I found then very reassuring. Good luck and remember you really need to get on medication, please, go for it."

Ms Kitty replied: "Seriously. I'm Bipolar 1 and I just don't have the attention span to read all that. Go see your doctor, a psychiatrist preferably, and ask him....... If you paid me $ 200 an hour maybe I would have read all that. But since you're not paying me..... sorry."

starz replied: "The only person who can diagnose you id a psychiatrist, but from what I've read I think you are already aware of that. I understand how much of a chore it can be to discuss everything with a doc, if you really feel you would have a problem with that would you be willing to maybe write some of it down and hand it to your doc? and then talk about what you feel comfortable talking about? Also be aware that normally they like to witness the change in moods before diagnosing so it sometimes takes a while. But even at that they can still help treat you, though that would probably be more talking therapy."
